Pilot Planning & Development

In 2025, we met with Kraków nativity scene makers to plan a pilot project through a series of co-creation workshops. Participants explored and identified the values and emotions that should form the core of the “nativity scene narrative”. They also outlined the scope of the pilot, considering who they wanted to reach, where the activities should take place, and what message about the craft they wished to share. The discussions resulted in initial proposals for specific experiences and products, which were subsequently refined using the Heritage Experience Canvas.
Memebers of the ICH community reflected on the key values that should be shared with visitors experiencing Kraków’s nativity scene tradition. They emphasised the uniqueness of the Kraków nativity scene phenomenon, which is a strong source of pride within the ICH community, highlighting not only its exceptional cultural significance but also the fact that every nativity scene is a one-of-a-kind, original work of art. They also underlined the deep connection between the nativity scenes and the city of Kraków itself, where the architecture, history, legends and distinctive atmosphere inspire makers to create personal, authorial narratives expressing their affection for the city. Equally important was the recognition of the passion, skill and dedication of the makers, whose work represents a highly refined form of artistic craftsmanship developed through long-term commitment. The participants also pointed to the religious dimension of nativity scenes as artistic interpretations of the Christmas story, as well as to the broader traditions surrounding them, including Christmas pageants and the use of traditional materials that have been passed down through generations.
Through exercises and discussions held during the co-creation workshops, we developed a vision statement to guide the pilot project. Kraków nativity scene making is a hallmark of the city, recognised both by the local community and by visitors to Kraków. It is valued for its unique blend of affection for the city, creative imagination, craftsmanship and the celebration of Christmas.
