DRIVERS are furious over a new law that will eliminate a massive amount of parking spots as hundreds of warnings have already been issued in one city. In the New Year, drivers in California will face fines if they park within 20 feet of marked or unmarked crosswalks thanks to a new daylighting law . The new California law will make it even harder to find parking spots in popular cities like San Francisco . The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said on Tuesday that since November 11, cops already issued more than 375 warnings to cars violating the rule. The new 20-foot buffer zone on the approaching side of the street aims to help drivers clearly see pedestrians crossing the road. "By keeping the area next to crosswalks clear of parked vehicle obstructions, people walking and people driving or riding on the street can see each other better," the SFMTA said on their site . OTTAWA - NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his party will not support a Liberal plan to give Canadians a GST holiday and $250 unless the government expands eligibility for the cheques, saying the rebate leaves out “the most vulnerable.” The Liberals announced a plan last week to cut the federal sales tax on a raft of items like toys and restaurant meals for two months, and to give $250 to more than 18.7 million Canadians in the spring. Mr Musk has been openly tapping his network of Silicon Valley friends and business associates to begin assembling a team of advisers, and the group has been recruiting and interviewing candidates for full-time positions. Mr Musk has solicited employees on X, saying the job would involve more than 80 hours of work per week. “This will be tedious work, make lots of enemies & compensation is zero,” he wrote. The spokesperson for the effort did not answer questions about how many staff members the group has now, and who – if anyone – is paying them. In their op-ed, Mr Musk and Mr Ramaswamy also said that in slashing regulations, they would rely on a pair of recent Supreme Court decisions that limited federal agencies’ power to issue rules. The men plan to compile a list of regulations that they believed stemmed from agencies having exceeded their legal authority. “Doge will present this list of regulations to President Trump, who can, by executive action, immediately pause the enforcement of those regulations and initiate the process for review and rescission,” the men wrote. Mr Musk and Mr Ramaswamy said that cutting rules would allow them to cut staff, allowing “mass head-count reductions” across the government. Yet many of those employees have civil-service protections, meaning they generally cannot be fired without cause, or for their political beliefs. In his first term, Trump tried to shift thousands of employees into a different category, where they could be fired at will. President Joe Biden rescinded that order, called Schedule F, when he took office. Ripe for legal challenges Mr Jonathan H. Adler, a professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, said that many of the ideas mentioned by Mr Musk and Mr Ramaswamy would be ripe for legal challenges and noted that many of Trump’s previous efforts to use executive powers expansively had been struck down by courts. Trump’s advisers have suggested that the Supreme Court’s ruling in a landmark case involving Chevron earlier this year will make it easier for the executive branch to nullify rules and regulations that appear to go beyond the legislative intent of laws. However, Prof Adler noted that the ruling actually means that agencies should not be able to make such determinations, suggesting that it would require litigation and court rulings to quash the regulations. Ignoring or eliminating rules without following the proper procedures is also likely to trigger lawsuits from those who benefit from the status quo. “There’s litigation risk that they’re not adequately accounting for,” Prof Adler said, adding that the Trump administration would have to be extremely strategic if it tries to take legally creative steps to rescind regulations or shrink agencies. Law firms have already been bracing clients for legal fights. In a briefing this week, lawyers from Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman said companies need to start warning members of Congress and the Trump administration about the potential fallout if government contracts are cut and if certain payments or benefits stop flowing as part of an efficiency effort. “While the Republican-controlled Congress will very likely work in lockstep with the Trump White House, it is equally likely that Republican members of Congress will be uncomfortable with delayed payments and spending cuts to programs favored by constituents,” they wrote. “In particular, government contractors are likely to push back against proposals from Doge leaders to temporarily suspend payments to contractors while large-scale audits are conducted.” Mr Robert J. Kovacev, a lawyer at Miller & Chevalier who specialises in tax disputes with the federal government, said the Trump administration’s ambitions were reminiscent of efforts by the Reagan administration to roll back regulations in the 1980s. At that time, President Ronald Reagan issued an executive order to freeze regulations that were in process and established a task force to review regulatory burdens more broadly, but it fell short of its ambitious goals. But Mr Musk’s team has advantages that Mr Reagan’s allies did not - a Republican-controlled Congress, and a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court. “I think what Doge will bring to the table is a focus on identifying regulations that pushed the envelope and expanded regulatory power too far,” said Mr Kovacev. Still, Mr Kovacev said, the process of rescission – formally removing a rule from the books – can take years, because it requires the government to solicit and respond to public comment. If it does hit legal obstacles, Mr Musk’s group could borrow from another approach Trump used during his first term - disruption. For example, after the Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service unit published research that showed some tax cuts proposed by Trump would flow mainly to rich farmers, the Trump administration relocated that team from Washington to Kansas City. Because many of the staff members did not want to move halfway across the country, the move caused the unit to shrink in size – and become less productive, according to a 2022 Government Accountability Office report. Protected status The success of gutting the budget might also be determined by whether Congress, and even the president, has enough resolve, especially when it comes to certain programs and departments. Some of the largest parts of the budget have gone to causes Trump has vowed to protect, such as medicare, social security and the military. Those sectors also likely have strong support in Congress. Capitol Hill has always been the place where ambitious efforts to slash the budget – from one started by Mr Theodore Roosevelt to the commission under Mr Reagan run by industrialist J. Peter Grace – have run aground. Members of Congress have been reluctant to cut even small programs they think help their constituents, and the law says presidents must spend all the money that Congress allocates. Still, in recent weeks, some members of Congress have shown enthusiasm for Mr Musk’s and Mr Ramaswamy’s ideas. Republican senator Joni Ernst from Iowa, took to social media this week to outline what she called “easy” steps to cut US$2 trillion in spending. But even those steps showed the complexity of the task awaiting Mr Musk and Mr Ramaswamy. Some of Ms Ernst’s recommendations would be relatively manageable but for negligible savings – at least in proportion to the immense size of the federal budget. She said, for example, that the government could save US$16.6 million by no longer providing campaign help to long-shot presidential candidates. And one of her ideas directly clashes with one of Mr Musk’s and Mr Ramaswamy’s. The billionaires’ idea is to force federal workers to work five days a week in the office, with the idea that they will become more efficient or quit. But Ms Ernst wants to take the opposite tack - allow federal employees to work from home and sell off the office space they no longer visit. In the House, Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia will head a House Oversight subcommittee to “support the Doge mission”. So far, she has been vague about her plans but has said in a statement that she intends to hold hearings that will help Doge “gut useless government agencies” and “expose people who need to be FIRED”. Ms Greene also plans to push forward legislation like the REINS Act, which would require congressional approval for all regulations issued by federal agencies for them to go into effect. It’s also one of the safest cars in its class, earning a perfect five stars in NHTSA crash testing and sterling crashworthiness and collision avoidance scores from the IIHS. Its standard features are forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure prevention. With mature styling, a premium interior, and an efficient hybrid powertrain option, the 2025 Honda Civic is a great option if safety is a concern since it aces almost all of the IIHS’ crash tests and earns a five-star safety rating from the federal government. It also comes standard with adaptive cruise control, lane departure prevention, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The Civic falls short slightly in the IIHS’ updated moderate overlap front test, which now accounts for rear passenger safety, but even so, it’s one of the safest cars in its class. Reflective of parent company BMW, today’s Mini Cooper is well constructed and features premium safety features that belie its small size, including automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning. Although the Mini hasn’t been tested by NHTSA, the IIHS gives the Cooper its highest score of Good in the original driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side-impact tests. That said, the IIHS doesn’t place the Cooper on its Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ lists since it hasn’t been evaluated on the updated battery of passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, or side-impact tests. Expect the new-for-2025 Mini Cooper to earn decent crash ratings in those scenarios, especially since it shares its strong platform with the outgoing model. With its recent redesign, the Toyota Prius transformed from a frumpy little caterpillar to a stylish and efficient butterfly. It also became a very safe hybrid hatchback. Perfect scores in all of its government and IIHS crash tests, as well as a sophisticated system of collision avoidance technology, earn it top marks. It’s also one of our favorite cars on the market, period, as evidenced by its status as a 2024 Edmunds Top Rated vehicle. The Honda Accord is among the safest midsize sedans on the market today thanks to excellent crashworthiness scores and a competent standard collision prevention system. It’s a Top Safety Pick+, beating out rivals like the Hyundai Sonata, Kia K5, and Subaru Legacy, and the Accord also earns a perfect five-star rating from NHTSA. Honda’s hybrid-intensive product planning is on full display here—all but the two lowest Accord trims have a hybrid powertrain—and it’s also among the most spacious cars in its class. Like its Honda Accord rival, the Toyota Camry is also an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with a five-star NHTSA rating. It also has a very impressive suite of driver assistance and safety technology, including lane departure prevention with active centering, full-speed adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. The Camry edges out the Accord in IIHS testing thanks to a more effective collision avoidance system, but both cars are remarkably well matched otherwise. The fully electric Hyundai Ioniq 6 offers excellent safety and collision prevention, with excellent scores across the entire line of IIHS tests. The Ioniq 6 hasn’t been tested for rollover resistance by NHTSA, but it earned a four-star front safety rating and a five-star side-impact rating in government tests. Like most EVs, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 comes standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure prevention. It also offers up to 342 miles of all-electric driving in its longest-range trim level. The Acura Integra is a close mechanical cousin to the Honda Civic, so it’s no surprise it does well in both the IIHS’ and NHTSA’s crash tests. The luxury hatchback is a Top Safety Pick+ and earns a perfect five stars in government testing. The AcuraWatch safety suite is standard on the Integra, bringing automatic emergency braking, lane centering, lane departure prevention, and adaptive cruise control. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a safe option in the popular small luxury sedan segment thanks to its good scores in IIHS crash testing. Mercedes’ best-selling sedan also comes standard with automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning, which helps it earn a Top Safety Pick award. However, it hasn’t been tested by the NHTSA. Both the Genesis G80 and the fully electric Genesis Electrified G80 earn a Top Safety Pick+ score from the IIHS thanks to their good scores on the agency’s crash tests, as well as a comprehensive suite of active safety features that avoided collisions with simulated pedestrians. The internal-combustion-engine G80 earned a perfect five-star safety rating from NHTSA, and although the Electrified G80 hasn’t been tested by the feds just yet, it should likely excel in those tests too. The flagship Genesis G90 sedan competes with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series, and the South Korean automaker clearly hasn’t skimped on safety in its fight against the establishment. Although it hasn’t been subjected to the NHTSA array of tests, it aced almost all of its IIHS tests, and a long list of standard active safety and driver assistance features sets it apart from the stingy German makes that charge extra for them. With handsome styling and a well-finished interior, the Volvo V60 is a very appealing station wagon for those looking for such a thing. It’s also quite safe, with good crashworthiness scores in the IIHS’ original moderate overlap front and side-impact scores. Unfortunately, since it hasn’t been tested with the updated versions of those tests, it didn’t earn this year’s Top Safety Pick award, but it was called a Top Safety Pick+ in 2022. NHTSA also gives the V60 a five-star safety rating. Although the Mercedes-Benz E 450 All-Terrain isn’t a traditional wagon — it follows the lifted almost-crossover formula shared with the Audi A6 Allroad and Volvo V90 Cross Country — we’ll take what we can get in this dwindling category. The All-Terrain hasn’t been tested by the IIHS or NHTSA, but a previous-generation E-Class earned a 2023 Top Safety Pick+ award, and Mercedes isn’t the kind of company that goes backward when it comes to safety. The E 450 All-Terrain comes standard with automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning, though, at this price, Benz should just make other active safety features standard. With a five-star NHTSA safety rating, standard forward collision warning and emergency braking, and excellent IIHS crashworthiness scores on its original tests, the Audi A6 Allroad does a good job protecting people (both passengers and pedestrians) from crashes. However, since the IIHS hasn’t subjected the Allroad to its updated side and moderate front crash criteria, it lost its Top Safety Pick+ status in 2022. Still, it should be a fine option for luxury longroof shoppers. Both the Ford Mustang coupe and convertible perform well in crash testing. The coupe received a five-star safety rating from NHTSA, and both variants scored decently on all the IIHS tests they’ve undergone. They also come standard with forward collision warning, lane departure prevention, and automatic emergency braking. However, the IIHS needs to test both models on its updated criteria before it will rate them. Although the government hasn’t tested it, the Toyota GR86 aced all of its IIHS crashworthiness tests when it was new for the 2022 model year. Unfortunately, since it hasn’t been subjected to the IIHS’ updated testing since then, it lost its Top Safety Pick+ status. Still, this is a fun-to-drive, sporty coupe that comes standard with a long list of active safety features, and it’s reasonably priced to boot. Mechanically identical to the Toyota GR86, the 2025 Subaru BRZ achieves the same safety ratings—who would have thought? It likewise received a Top Safety Pick+ score in 2022 that lapsed when the IIHS updated its criteria for 2023, but like the Toyota, it has a long list of active safety features to go along with its lightweight, rip-roaring sports car attitude. The Audi A5 lost its traditional two-door coupe body style after 2024, but the five-door Sportback body style remains before it’s replaced later in 2025. Although it hasn’t seen the IIHS’ more stringent test regimen, its original crashworthiness scores were good enough to earn it a Top Safety Pick award as recently as 2022. DENVER — So you're the most valuable player of that annual Thanksgiving Day backyard flag football game. Or played tackle football on any level. Or ran track. Or dabbled in basketball. Or toyed with any sport, really. Well, this may be just for you: USA Football is holding talent identification camps all over the country to find that next flag football star. It's "America's Got Talent" meets "American Idol," with the stage being the field and the grand prize a chance to compete for a spot on a national team. Because it's never too early to start planning for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, where flag football will make its Summer Games debut. Know this, though — it's not an easy team to make. The men's and women's national team rosters are at "Dream Team" status given the men's side has captured six of the last seven world championships and the women three in a row. To remain on top, the sport's national governing body is scouring every football field, park, track, basketball court and gym to find hidden talent to cultivate. USA Football has organized camps and tryouts from coast to coast for anyone ages 11 to 23. There are more than a dozen sites set up so far, ranging from Dallas (Sunday) to Chicago (Dec. 14) to Tampa (March 29) to Los Angeles (TBD) and the Boston area (April 27), where it will be held at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. The organization has already partnered with the NFL on flag football initiatives and programs. The numbers have been through the roof, with engagement on social media platforms increasing by 86% since flag football was announced as an Olympic invitational sport in October 2023. The participation of boys and girls ages 6 to 17 in flag football last year peaked at more than 1.6 million, according to USA Football research. "We pride ourselves on elevating the gold standard across the sport," said Eric Mayes, the managing director of the high performance and national teams for USA Football. "We want to be the best in the world — and stay the best in the world." Flag football was one of five new sports added to the LA28 program. The already soaring profile of American football only figures to be enhanced by an Olympic appearance. Imagine, say, a few familiar faces take the field, too. Perhaps even NFL stars such as Tyreek Hill or Patrick Mahomes, maybe even past pro football greats donning a flag belt for a country to which they may have ties. Soon after flag football's inclusion, there was chatter of NFL players possibly joining in on the fun. Of course, there are logistical issues to tackle before their inclusion at the LA Olympics, which open July 14, 2028. Among them, training camp, because the Olympics will be right in the middle of it. The big question is this: Will owners permit high-priced players to duck out for a gold-medal pursuit? No decisions have yet been made on the status of NFL players for the Olympics. For now, it's simply about growing the game. There are currently 13 states that sanction girls flag football as a high school varsity sport. Just recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles helped pave the way to get it adopted in Pennsylvania. Around the world, it's catching on, too. The women's team from Japan took third at the recent word championships, while one of the best players on the planet is Mexico quarterback Diana Flores. "Could flag football globally become the new soccer? That's something to aspire to," said Stephanie Kwok, the NFL's vice president of flag football. This type of flag football though, isn't your Thanksgiving Day game with family and friends. There's a learning curve. And given the small roster sizes, versatility is essential. Most national team members need to be a version of Colorado's two-way standout and Heisman hopeful Travis Hunter. Forget bump-and-run coverage, too, because there's no contact. None. That took some adjusting for Mike Daniels, a defensive back out of West Virginia who earned a rookie minicamp invitation with the Cleveland Browns in 2017. "If a receiver is running around, I'm thinking, 'OK, I can kind of bump him here and there and nudge him,'" Daniels explained. "They're like, 'No, you can't.' I'm just like, 'So I'm supposed to let this guy just run?!' I really rebelled at the idea at first. But you learn." The competition for an Olympic roster spot is going to be fierce because only 10 players are expected to make a squad. The best 10 will earn it, too, as credentials such as college All-American or NFL All-Pro take a backseat. "I would actually love" seeing NFL players try out, said Daniels, who's also a personal trainer in Miami. "I'm not going to let you just waltz in here, thinking, 'I played NFL football for five years. I'm popular. I have a huge name.' I'm still better than you and I'm going to prove it — until you prove otherwise." Around the house, Bruce Mapp constantly swivels his hips when turning a hallway corner or if his daughter tries to reach for a hug. It's his way of working on avoiding a "defender" trying to snare the flag. That approach has earned the receiver out of Coastal Carolina four gold medals with USA Football. The 31-year-old fully plans on going for more gold in Los Angeles. "You grow up watching Usain Bolt (win gold) and the 'Redeem Team' led by Kobe Bryant win a gold medal, you're always thinking, 'That's insane.' Obviously, you couldn't do it in your sport, because I played football," said Mapp, who owns a food truck in the Dallas area. "With the Olympics approaching, that (gold medal) is what my mind is set on." It's a common thought, which is why everything — including talent camps — starts now. "Everybody thinks, 'Yeah, the U.S. just wins,'" Daniels said. "But we work hard all the time. We don't just walk in. We don't just get off the bus thinking, 'We're going to beat people.'" As Donald Trump continued to spread his message through the podcast manosphere in the months leading up to the 2024 election, one refrain rang out from liberals everywhere: Get Kamala Harris on Hot Ones ! Now, thanks to a painful post-mortem round table from her top campaign staff on Pod Save America , we know that they not only tried to get Harris on that popular YouTube show—where celebrities answer questions while eating increasingly spicy hot wings—but that the Hot Ones team apparently turned her down. As Pod Save America host Dan Pfeiffer, a former communications director for Barack Obama put it during Tuesday’s “exclusive” episode: “Never in time has there been a candidate better suited” for Hot Ones than Harris. ADVERTISEMENT But it never happened because the show “didn’t want to delve into politics,” Stephanie Cutter, who ran messaging and media strategy for Harris, said on the podcast. She said the Harris team got that reaction nearly “across the board” when trying to book the Democratic nominee on the same types of non-political media that happily welcomed Trump. “I don’t think he had the same problem,” Harris campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon, adding that Trump “certainly was able to tap into some cultural elements in ways that we couldn’t.” Pfeiffer, for his part, marveled at “the idea that it would be more politically problematic to have on Kamala Harris, the sitting vice president of the United States, than Donald Trump, a man who’s been convicted of a crime and tried to violently overthrow the election.” That point led Cutter to reveal that the Harris campaign did reach out to Hot Ones about having their candidate on, but were rebuffed. “Hot Ones, which is a great show, they didn’t wanna do any politics, so they weren’t going to take us or him,” the Democratic political consultant said. “So that was the issue.” The Daily Beast has reached out to Hot Ones for comment.
