iligaw President Bola Tinubu has announced the appointment of chief executive officers for the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), the Solid Minerals Development Fund/Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Initiative (SMDF/PAGMI) and the New Partnership for Africa Development (NEPAD). This was contained in a statement issued by the special adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday. President Tinubu appointed Prof. Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, a visiting professor at the NUC, as the organisation’s new Executive Secretary. Prof. Ribadu is an expert in veterinary reproduction and has served as vice chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Yola, and the Sule Lamido University, Jigawa State. President Tinubu appointed Prof. Salisu Shehu as Executive Secretary of the NERDC. Prof Shehu is a renowned academic in educational and human psychology. He was instrumental in establishing the School of Continuing Education at Bayero University, Kano, and was the Vice-Chancellor of Al-Istiqamah University, Kano. The President also announced Jabiru Salisu Abdullahi Tsauri’s appointment as the National Coordinator of NEPAD. Tsauri holds a Master’s in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University. He is a seasoned administrator with expertise in legislative affairs, global affairs, and democratic governance and vast experience in public service. Lastly, the President appointed Yazid Shehu Umar Danfulani as the Executive Secretary of the SMDF/PAGMI. Yazid Danfulani holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s in Arts and Management from the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom. He has extensive experience in Banking, Computing, and Business Administration. He once worked at the Central Bank of Nigeria and was also a Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in Zamfara State. The statement added that President Tinubu believed the appointees’ experience and track record will bring a new sense of commitment, progress, and positive outcomes to fulfil Nigerians’ expectations of their respective organisations.

Jae Crowder is officially back in the league. The veteran forward officially struck a deal to join the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, the team announced. Terms of that contract are not yet known, though the Kings put him to work right away. The 13-year veteran, who was first selected in the second round of the 2012 draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, will join his ninth team in the league once his deal with the Kings is official. He averaged 6.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game last season in Milwaukee. Crowder helped lead both the Miami Heat and the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals in back-to-back years, though he’s yet to win a championship. Crowder became a free agent this past offseason, and he worked out with the Kings over the summer, though he was unable to strike a deal to land with any team. The Kings are dealing with significant injuries, and have lost seven of their last 10 games entering Wednesday’s contest in Minnesota. Forward Trey Lyles is out for at least three weeks with a right calf strain, which he sustained in Monday’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. DeMar DeRozan will also miss Wednesday’s game with lower back muscle inflammation, though it’s unknown how long he’ll be sidelined. Third-year coach on Tuesday after he chased down an official in their loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, too. Though it’s unclear what his role will be with the franchise just yet, Crowder should be able to provide some much-needed depth in the frontcourt behind Keegan Murray and Domantas Sabonis at least in the near future. We’ll see if he’s the missing piece to lift the Kings out of their slump.

Human Rights Day is observed annually on December 10th around the world. It marks the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), one of the most groundbreaking global pledges in history. This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights to which every person is entitled, regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status. “The Universal Declaration shows the way to common values and approaches that can help resolve tensions and create the security and stability our world craves,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Human rights empower individuals and communities to build a better tomorrow. By embracing the full power of human rights as the path to the world we desire, we can become more peaceful, equal, and sustainable. This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now”, is a call to recognize the importance and relevance of human rights in our daily lives. In Myanmar, the constitutional framework — specifically Sections 347, 348, and 349 — serves as a bulwark in safeguarding the fundamental rights of its citizens. This commitment ensures that all Myanmar citizens not only have the right to enjoy fundamental freedoms but are also bound by the responsibility not to infringe upon the rights of others, regardless of the circumstances. The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, in line with its mandate, is actively promoting and protecting human rights. As part of this effort, it has translated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights into Myanmar and 21 indigenous languages. The Declaration has also been printed as posters and made into animated films for distribution. These initiatives aim to raise awareness and understanding of human rights among indigenous communities. The National Human Rights Commission Law was enacted by the Union Parliament on 28 March 2014, as Law No 21. Subsequently, the MNHRC was established in accordance with this law, marking the first such commission in Myanmar’s history. Although the commission was initially established on 5 September 2011, through Notification 34/2011, it was restructured under the law on 24 September 2014. In line with the objectives set forth in the Commission Law, efforts to establish a human rights organization that upholds and protects human rights are being carried out. These efforts include safeguarding human rights, investigating violations, and implementing relevant recommendations. Furthermore, the Commission conducts inspections and audits of prisons, detention centres, lock-ups, and holding facilities. Based on its findings, the Commission submits pertinent recommendations to the appropriate government departments.
