‘Morrison Hotel’ Building in Los Angeles Destroyed by Fire

NEW YORK (AP) — Top-ranked chess player Magnus Carlsen is headed back to the World Blitz Championship on Monday after its governing body agreed to loosen a dress code that got him fined and denied a late-round game in another tournament for refusing to change out of jeans . Lamenting the contretemps, International Chess Federation President Arkady Dvorkovich said in a statement Sunday that he'd let World Blitz Championship tournament officials consider allowing “appropriate jeans” with a jacket, and other “elegant minor deviations” from the dress code. He said Carlsen's stand — which culminated in his quitting the tournament Friday — highlighted a need for more discussion “to ensure that our rules and their application reflect the evolving nature of chess as a global and accessible sport.” Carlsen, meanwhile, said in a video posted Sunday on social media that he would play — and wear jeans — in the World Blitz Championship when it begins Monday. “I think the situation was badly mishandled on their side,” the 34-year-old Norwegian grandmaster said. But he added that he loves playing blitz — a fast-paced form of chess — and wanted fans to be able to watch, and that he was encouraged by his discussions with the federation after Friday's showdown. “I think we sort of all want the same thing,” he suggested in the video on his Take Take Take chess app’s YouTube channel. “We want the players to be comfortable, sure, but also relatively presentable.” The events began when Carlsen wore jeans and a sportcoat Friday to the Rapid World Championship, which is separate from but held in conjunction with the blitz event. The chess federation said Friday that longstanding rules prohibit jeans at those tournaments, and players are lodged nearby to make sartorial switch-ups easy if needed. An official fined Carlsen $200 and asked him to change pants, but he refused and wasn't paired for a ninth-round game, the federation said at the time. The organization noted that another grandmaster, Ian Nepomniachtchi, was fined earlier in the day for wearing sports shoes, changed and continued to play. Carlsen has said that he offered to wear something else the next day, but officials were unyielding. He said “it became a bit of a matter of principle,” so he quit the rapid and blitz championships. In the video posted Sunday, he questioned whether he had indeed broken a rule and said changing clothes would have needlessly interrupted his concentration between games. He called the punishment “unbelievably harsh.” “Of course, I could have changed. Obviously, I didn’t want to,” he said, and “I stand by that.”OAKLAND — Gov. Gavin Newsom held a news conference Friday to pressure Oakland officials to scale back a policy that only allows the cops to chase someone if there’s reasonable suspicion they have committed a violent crime. Calling the city’s policy an “extreme outlier,” Newsom first announced plans to extend a “surge” in California Highway Patrol support to combat retail theft, vehicle theft and sideshows in the East Bay. Then he said the popular program would only continue if the city meets him halfway. “We’re at that point in time that we need to see some commiserate support and changes as it relates to policing here in Oakland in order to consider extending that state-subsidized partnership,” Newsom said Friday, flanked by CHP officers, a local bishop and the city’s Chamber of Commerce CEO. He later added, “You can be drunk, you can run a red light, you can be close to side-swiping a school bus during the morning hours, right in front of a police officer, and the pursuit policy in Oakland says we cannot engage that suspect.” Newsom’s announcement comes just weeks after Oakland voters moved overwhelmingly to recall both the city’s mayor and the county’s district attorney, largely due to concerns over increases in property crimes. In a statewide landslide, voters also supported Proposition 36, a law opposed by Newsom, which opens up more avenues to charging shoplifters with a felony and imprisoning repeat offenders. “(Voters) want change. They’re demanding change,” Newsom said, referencing both recall elections. The CHP partnership program, implemented in 2023, simply adds officers to assist in specific “proactive” enforcement of property and nuisance crimes, like organized retail theft and sideshows. The governor’s office touted 1,400 arrests through the partnership this year, and says it resulted in $13 million in stolen goods being returned. The program has been seen as a band aid for cities with understaffed police departments, and exists in San Bernardino, Bakersfield and the Bay Area. CHP plans to extend its efforts in Vallejo as well, officials announced Friday. Newsom has attempted to convince Oakland leaders to do away with the pursuit policy before, including in an open letter to the city penned last July. The city’s police commission declined to recommend policy changes in September, citing the dangers of high-speed chases, but also concerns that most chases happen in the non-white, lower income parts of the city and that fewer chases would help build trust in those communities. Ironically, the policy doesn’t apply to CHP officers operating in Oakland, who say they’ve been met with surprise when they’ve chased suspects and forced them to stop.DAVID DUVALL , Chief Executive Officer at Core Molding Technologies CMT , executed a substantial insider sell on December 23, according to an SEC filing. FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — Inter Milan beat Como 2-0 to cement third place in Serie A and close the gap on top two Atalanta and Napoli on Monday. Carlos Augusto got the opener when he headed home a corner kick in the 48th minute. Marcus Thuram scored the second in stoppage time with a potent strike into the roof of the net. It was the first time these teams have played each other in the top division since 2003 and although Inter had lost only one league game all season it struggled to impose itself on 15th-placed Como. However, it won without exerting itself and the three points were enough to take Simone Inzaghi’s men within three points of leader Atalanta and within one of Napoli. Inter has a game in hand over both clubs. Fiorentina missed a chance to go fourth when it lost at home to Udinese 2-1. The Florence club won a record eight consecutive Serie A games before losing to Bologna 1-0 on Dec. 15, and it looked to be back on track when Moises Kean converted a penalty after eight minutes to become the first Fiorentina player to reach double figures in the league since Federico Chiesa in the 2019-20 season. However, Udinese was a different prospect after the break. Lorenzo Lucca equalized with the aid of sloppy defending four minutes into the second half and then Florian Thauvin found space on the edge of the box to curl in the second eight minutes later. The result left Udinese in ninth place and Fiorentina in fifth. The match was a special one for Edoardo Bove, the Fiorentina player whose collapse with a heart issue led to the suspension of its game with Inter Milan on Dec. 1. Bove was fitted with a defibrillator implant soon after and sat on the Fiorentina bench for the first time since his collapse. He is not allowed to play but his position on the sideline alongside coach Raffaele Palladino was seen as a step towards normality for the 22-year-old midfielder. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A 93-year-old former Catholic priest sentenced to life in prison earlier this month for raping a teenage boy has died, Louisiana authorities and his lawyer confirmed Friday. Less than two weeks after being sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars, Lawrence Hecker died of natural causes at 3 a.m. Thursday at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center, according to Ken Pastorick, Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections communications director. Hecker had pleaded guilty to charges including first-degree rape and aggravated kidnapping shortly before jury selection for his long-delayed trial had been scheduled to begin earlier this month, with other victims prepared to testify against him. The survivor of the assault to which Hecker pleaded guilty had said that Hecker raped him after offering to instruct him in wrestling moves ahead of tryouts for a school team in the mid-1970s. “The only prayer I can come up with I hope he spends eternity in hell after God's judgment of him,” the survivor said in a written statement provided by his attorney, Richard Trahant. “Now after his death I feel vindicated and free,” he said. The Associated Press does not identify those who say they have been sexually assaulted. Hecker's trial had been delayed for months partly because of questions around his mental competency. Hecker had suffered from dementia, his lawyer Bobby Hjortsberg said. Hecker had been ordained as an archdiocesan priest in 1958 and remained in this position even after facing an undisputed complaint of child molestation in the late 1980s, according to court records . Hecker left the ministry in 2002. Hecker's conviction occurred amid a wave of sexual abuse allegations against the Catholic church in New Orleans, many resurfacing from decades ago. The fallout has left the Archdiocese of New Orleans embroiled in bankruptcy negotiations. Brook is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative.
