In preparation for the global Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit 2025, set to take place in March 2025 in Paris, France, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and Fruit of Sustainability convened a Stakeholder Dialogue at the Avari Hotel in Lahore. The dialogue, titled “Partnering for Healthier Food Systems & Nutrition: SMEs and Food Regulators in Focus,” aimed to address critical challenges in regulatory compliance, innovation, and collaboration to improve nutrition and food safety in Pakistan. The N4G Summit is a global platform dedicated to mobilizing financial, political, and community action to combat malnutrition and ensure healthier food systems worldwide. This Stakeholder Dialogue is a crucial initiative to connect local challenges and solutions with the global discourse, contributing actionable insights to the summit’s agenda. The dialogue brought together diverse participants, including representatives from Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), regulatory bodies, and nutrition experts. The event began with a welcome address by Sarim Mehmood, CEO and Founder of Fruit of Sustainability, followed by opening remarks from Mr. Faiz Rasool, Head of Policy & Advocacy at GAIN Pakistan, who provided an overview of Pakistan’s malnutrition landscape and emphasized the role of SMEs in transforming food systems. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha, Director General of the Punjab Agriculture Food & Drug Authority (PAFDA), delivered special remarks highlighting the regulatory landscape in Pakistan and opportunities for fostering innovation and compliance. The Centre responded by saying a decision to set up a memorial has already been taken and a trust would be formed to identify the location soon. Manmohan Singh died on December 26. He was cremated at the Nigambodh Ghat on December 28. BJP president J P Nadda has also responded to the Congress' accusations, saying the Centre has decided to allocate space for Manmohan Singh's memorial and informed his family about it. "As you are aware, all former Prime Ministers, including (caretaker) Prime Minister like Gulzarilal Nanda, have been accorded memorial to honour their contribution. "These include Shanti Van for Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru, Vijay Ghat for Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, Shakti Sthal for Smt. Indira Gandhi, Vir Bhumi For Rajiv Gandhi, and Sadaiv Atal for Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee," Sidhu wrote. "The Raj Ghat complex has been the chosen resting place for all these leaders, reflecting its sanctity as a repository of our democratic legacy," Sidhu wrote. But this tradition was "conspicuously broken" when Manmohan Singh was cremated at the Nigambodh Ghat, a site where no other prime minister has been cremated, and no steps have been taken to commemorate his remarkable legacy, Sidhu said. "It is alarming to note that this departure from tradition reeks of visible insecurity and political bias," he alleged in his letter. The establishment of memorials is not a partisan issue but an act of preserving India's glorious history and honouring those who have shaped its destiny, wrote Sidhu. He mentioned that Dr Singh's contribution as an economist, statesman, and leader who guided India through a decade of transformative growth and global integration cannot be ignored. "It is pertinent to mention that even Prime Ministers like P V Narasimha Rao, whose cremation took place outside Delhi, have been honoured with memorials, such as Gyan Bhumi in Hyderabad. Therefore, the inaction regarding Dr Singh's memorial raises questions about the motives behind this omission," he said. Sidhu said honouring leaders with memorials has been an integral part of India's democratic ethos, transcending political differences. "Notable exceptions like V P Singh, who lacks a memorial, have drawn criticism even from his family," he pointed out, while adding "this neglect must not be extended to Dr Manmohan Singh, whose legacy is too significant to be ignored or politicized". Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had said the BJP-led Centre had "totally insulted" Singh, a great son of Mother India and the first prime minister from the Sikh community, by performing his last rites at the Nigambodh Ghat. NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for Sean “Diddy” Combs tried for a third time Friday to persuade a judge to let him leave jail while he awaits his sex trafficking trial, but a decision won’t come until next week. Judge Arun Subramanian said at a hearing that he will release his decision on Combs' latest request for bail after Combs’ lawyers and federal prosecutors file letters addressing outstanding issues. Those letters are due at noon on Monday, Subramanian said. Combs’ lawyers pitched having him await trial under around-the-clock surveillance either his mansion on an island near Miami Beach or — after the judge scoffed at that location — an apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Their plan essentially amounts to putting Combs on house arrest, with strict limits on who he has contact with. But prosecutors argue that Combs has routinely flouted jail rules and can't be trusted not to interfere with witnesses or the judicial process. “The argument that he’s a lawless person who doesn’t follow instructions isn’t factually accurate,” Combs lawyer Anthony Ricco argued. “The idea that he’s an out-of-control individual who has to be detained isn’t factually accurate.” Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years with help from a network of associates and employees while silencing victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. His trial is slated to begin May 5. The Bad Boy Records founder remains locked up at a Brooklyn federal jail, where he spent his Nov. 4 birthday. Two other judges previously concluded that Combs would be a danger to the community if he is released and an appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals weighs his bail request. Friday's hearing was the second time Combs was in court this week. On Tuesday, a judge blocked prosecutors from using as evidence papers that were seized from his cell during jail-wide sweep for contraband and weapons at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. As he entered through a side door, Combs waved to relatives including his mother and several of his children in the courtroom gallery, tapping his hand to his heart and blowing kisses at them. He then hugged his lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, before taking a seat at the defense table. He was not handcuffed or shackled and wore a beige jail uniform, occasionally pulling a pair of reading glasses from his pocket as he peered at papers in front of him. Prosecutors maintain that no bail conditions will mitigate the “risk of obstruction and dangerousness to others” of releasing Combs from jail. Prosecutors contend that while locked up the “I'll Be Missing You” artist has orchestrated social media campaigns aimed at tainting the jury pool. They allege that he has also attempted to publicly leak materials he thinks would be helpful to his case and is contacting potential witnesses via third parties. “Simply put, the defendant cannot be trusted,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik argued. Combs’ lawyer Teny Geragos countered that, given the strict release conditions proposed, “it would be impossible for him not to follow rules.”
