There are a couple of high-ranking Yankees officials who’ve loved Bregman since he was a star at LSU. But it would be interesting to see the Yankees sign Bregman because he was on the 2017 Astros, a team Cashman has vehemently denounced every opportunity he’s given because he believes his club was cheated out of a World Series appearance. He didn’t cross Bregman off — and he wouldn’t even if he wasn’t interested because he could face complaints from the MLBPA — but he did speak positively about the third baseman. He’s been a thorn in our side for years, along with other people’s sides. He’s now into free agency. I’m sure he’s got a boatload of choices. Players like him make a lot of money. Additionally, Bregman’s total offensive production slipped in 2024. He finished with a 118 wRC+, his worst mark in any season in which he’s played at least 100 games. He had a career-worst .315 on-base percentage and career-lows in walk rate, wOBA and xwOBA. He’ll also be 31 in March. Depending on the cost and the years, a contract with Bregman should be considered risky. But the Yankees also have to capitalize on the short-term window for their franchise because neither Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole will likely be in their prime for much longer. Looking more positively at Bregman’s potential in 2025, he finished the 2024 season with an OPS around .850 in his final 108 games. The biggest difference for Bregman in 2025 was his patience at the plate dropped, perhaps the cause of his early-season struggles. Bregman’s swing rate and his contact rate on pitches outside the strike zone were the highest of his career. If he can be the player he was from mid-May on, Bregman could be a good addition for the Yankees, who are in dire need of more offense now with Soto’s departure. The message was necessary in the moment, and when you say something with your chest, as Green often does, backtracking dulls your point. “Mics catch everything today, but I don’t care,” Green said at the postgame podium. “Because anything I’ll say, I’ll say it right into the mic. I don’t give a damn. It was needed.” Green’s plea came after a 24-second violation in which Green had to hoist up a grenade at the end of the possession. Hield missed a read on a post pass, which bungled Golden State’s set. In the game, Hield went scoreless on 0-for-7 shooting and appeared to let his shooting struggles seep into his defense at times. A new Warrior, Hield has been streaky. In games he scores at least 18 points, the Warriors are 8-0. They’re 3-10 when he finishes in single digits.
