Analysis: If Jets don't want Rodgers, others will

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Building the current crop of artificial intelligence chatbots has relied on specialized computer chips pioneered by Nvidia, which dominates the market and made itself the poster child of the AI boom. But the same qualities that make those graphics processor chips, or GPUs, so effective at creating powerful AI systems from scratch make them less efficient at putting AI products to work. That’s opened up the AI chip industry to rivals who think they can compete with Nvidia in selling so-called AI inference chips that are more attuned to the day-to-day running of AI tools and designed to reduce some of the huge computing costs of generative AI. “These companies are seeing opportunity for that kind of specialized hardware,” said Jacob Feldgoise, an analyst at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology. “The broader the adoption of these models, the more compute will be needed for inference and the more demand there will be for inference chips.” It takes a lot of computing power to make an AI chatbot. It starts with a process called training or pretraining — the “P” in ChatGPT — that involves AI systems “learning” from the patterns of huge troves of data. GPUs are good at doing that work because they can run many calculations at a time on a network of devices in communication with each other. However, once trained, a generative AI tool still needs chips to do the work — such as when you ask a chatbot to compose a document or generate an image. That’s where inferencing comes in. A trained AI model must take in new information and make inferences from what it already knows to produce a response. GPUs can do that work, too. But it can be a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. “With training, you’re doing a lot heavier, a lot more work. With inferencing, that’s a lighter weight,” said Forrester analyst Alvin Nguyen. That’s led startups like Cerebras, Groq and d-Matrix as well as Nvidia’s traditional chipmaking rivals — such as AMD and Intel — to pitch more inference-friendly chips as Nvidia focuses on meeting the huge demand from bigger tech companies for its higher-end hardware. D-Matrix was founded in 2019 — a bit late to the AI chip game, as CEO Sid Sheth explained during a recent interview at the company’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California, the same Silicon Valley city that’s also home to AMD, Intel and Nvidia. “There were already 100-plus companies. So when we went out there, the first reaction we got was ‘you’re too late,’” he said. The pandemic’s arrival six months later didn’t help as the tech industry pivoted to focus on software to serve remote work. Now, however, Sheth sees a big market in AI inferencing, comparing that later stage of machine learning to how human beings apply the knowledge they acquired in school. “We spent the first 20 years of our lives going to school, educating ourselves. That’s training, right?” he said. “And then the next 40 years of your life, you kind of go out there and apply that knowledge — and then you get rewarded for being efficient.” The product, called Corsair, consists of two chips with four chiplets each, made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. — the same manufacturer of most of Nvidia’s chips — and packaged together in a way that helps to keep them cool. The chips are designed in Santa Clara, assembled in Taiwan and then tested back in California. Testing is a long process and can take six months — if anything is off, it can be sent back to Taiwan. D-Matrix workers were doing final testing on the chips during a recent visit to a laboratory with blue metal desks covered with cables, motherboards and computers, with a cold server room next door. While tech giants like Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft have been gobbling up the supply of costly GPUs in a race to outdo each other in AI development, makers of AI inference chips are aiming for a broader clientele. Forrester’s Nguyen said that could include Fortune 500 companies that want to make use of new generative AI technology without having to build their own AI infrastructure. Sheth said he expects a strong interest in AI video generation. “The dream of AI for a lot of these enterprise companies is you can use your own enterprise data,” Nguyen said. “Buying (AI inference chips) should be cheaper than buying the ultimate GPUs from Nvidia and others. But I think there’s going to be a learning curve in terms of integrating it.” Feldgoise said that, unlike training-focused chips, AI inference work prioritizes how fast a person will get a chatbot’s response. He said another whole set of companies is developing AI hardware for inference that can run not just in big data centers but locally on desktop computers, laptops and phones. Better-designed chips could bring down the huge costs of running AI to businesses. That could also affect the environmental and energy costs for everyone else. Sheth says the big concern right now is, “are we going to burn the planet down in our quest for what people call AGI — human-like intelligence?” It’s still fuzzy when AI might get to the point of artificial general intelligence — predictions range from a few years to decades. But, Sheth notes, only a handful of tech giants are on that quest. “But then what about the rest?” he said. “They cannot be put on the same path.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!Blake Snell reportedly has joined his former team's biggest rival. Abdullah stressed the need for sustained interactions beyond the electoral cycle, noting that the alliance's current approach appears sporadic and ineffective. "Our existence can't just be about six months before Parliament elections. Our existence has to be something more than that. The last time we met was when the Lok Sabha results had only just come out. There has been no formal or informal sort of work that has been done for the INDIA bloc," he said. Abdullah, who is the vice president of the National Conference , also stressed the importance of establishing a structured communication framework. "You need to have a programme of regular interactions," he explained, adding "not that you just come alive once Lok Sabha elections are announced and suddenly start talking and trying to work things out". Abdullah's comments suggest underlying tensions within the opposition alliance, indicating that infrequent meetings could potentially magnify minor disagreements. "If we had a more regular process of interaction, perhaps these smaller irritants wouldn't assume larger proportions," he added. Abdullah has also not been very happy with the electoral alliance his National Conference party formed with the Congress before the Jammu-Kashmir assembly elections, where it failed to pull its weight during campaigning. The NC won 41 seats while Congress got six. Observers noted that Congress leaders did little work during the campaigning, and left all the heavy lifting to the NC. INDIA bloc was formed as a combined opposition to stop the ruling BJP juggernaut but has failed to make much dent. Despite its good showing in the parliamentary elections, the Congress and its allies have failed miserably in two recent assembly elections - Haryana and Maharashtra. Abdullah's comments are further proof of the discontent within the INDIA bloc and the challenges it faces in countering the BJP in future political engagements. In a candid assessment of recent electoral debacles for Congress, Abdullah highlighted the growing strains within political alliances, particularly focusing on the Congress party's electoral performance and seat distribution strategies. "The Congress needs to critically examine its strike rate and learn lessons applicable to future elections," he said. Recurring patterns of alliance discomfort have been observed across multiple states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra, he said adding these tensions have reportedly contributed to the breakdown of potential alliances, such as the failure to collaborate between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress in Delhi, despite previous parliamentary election cooperation. Asked whether the Congress could get a ministerial berth in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah drew parallels with past power-sharing experiences, referencing the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government under Manmohan Singh when ministerial portfolios were determined by the number of legislators a party had. At that time Abdullah's father, Farooq Abdullah , got a minor ministry. "So if that worked for us then, it works for the Congress now. And the fact is that as a Union Territory, we are limited to having nine ministers. With nine ministers including the chief minister, I was not in a position to offer the Congress more than we did offer them," he said. The Congress party has indicated that their participation in the government will be contingent on J-K regaining its statehood, signalling potential future realignment of political strategies. "So for the time being, they've made it very clear that so long as J-K remains a Union Territory, they'll stay out. Once statehood is restored, then that will change. On Monday, Pecararo was named the McNeese State interim football coach after Gary Goff was fired after three seasons leading the Cowboys. “Coach Pec” as he is known to his players, came to McNeese with Goff as defensive coordinator and is currently guiding the remaining staff through a transition period that includes heavy recruiting. It is not an easy time. “It is definitely a strange period,” Pecoraro said. “We have a lot going on right now and you have to worry about players, families, and everything. I just want to do the best job I can for the program and the players and we will see what happens.” While few at the time thought he might be a candidate for the job long-term, those who know him best think the veteran college coach would be a perfect fit as the next Cowboy leader. All-American linebacker Micah Davey and others took to social media to make their views public. Davey wrote on the planform X “Perfect fit is on the staff” Monday after the team was informed of the change. He was not alone as other members of the defense followed the junior’s lead. Keeping Davey and others is a big need for McNeese, which improved by six wins this season but not enough to keep the head coach. “Sure that makes me feel good, I love my players and I love this school,” Pecoraro said. “My family loves it here and this place has been great to us. “But what matters most is we do the best thing for the program while we are here. We have to get back to work, it’s all we can do.” Pecoraro’s defense had a major part in turning around the Cowboys this season, as they went from 0-10 in 2023 to 6-6 this fall. That was despite injuries to Davey and other key players. “I’m proud with what we have done this season and with what we had to go through adversity-wise,” Pecoraro said. “It was a long year and I was hoping we had done enough to get another season together. But it is a business and I understand that and now we have to be professional and finish up this semester and this season the right way.” Pecoraro said he is hoping to interview for the top job but would love to stay on even if Athletic Director Heath Schroyer goes in a different direction. “Sure, I would love the opportunity to be the next head coach, I feel I am ready for that,” Pecoraro said. “It’s not my decision though, that is up to others. The good news for us is that we have a lot of experience up here and most of us have been through this before. “What makes it tough is you are dealing with families and the holidays. That always adds to the pressures but it’s the nature of the business.” When reached for comment Schroyer said he is expecting to move quickly on finding a new coach and that he would likely give Pecoraro an interview soon. Pecoraro came to McNeese in 2022 after spending the 2021 season at South Alabama and has had stops at Kansas, Florida Atlantic, Southern Mississippi, Alcorn State, North Alabama, Webber International, and Florida State, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Twice during his time at Southern Mississippi, his defenses finished in the Top 20 nationally. After all sorts of issues in 2023, Pecoraro changed up his defense and turned it into a solid group that was much more aggressive and attacking. Right now Pecoraro is concentrating on the job at hand, keeping the Cowboys on their upward track. That means retaining the roster as best he can with the transfer portal opening up Dec. 9. “We have a good amount of talent on this roster right now that we have to try as best we can to retain,” Pecoraro said. “No matter what happens, it is important that McNeese keeps this group together and doesn’t start over once again. “What we need to do now is make sure we keep what we have and add what we need to keep moving forward and get to nine wins and championships in the future.” That is a future Pecararo would love to be a part of.

The Pittsburgh Steelers take on what is typically an unenviable task -- traveling on a short week for a Thursday night primetime game. However, a few things are playing in Pittsburgh's favor as Week 12 of the NFL regular season kicks off. Namely, the "trip" to Cleveland is a little more than two hours by road and when the Steelers arrive there, they'll be facing a backup quarterback at the helm of a massively underwhelming 2-8 Browns team. The Steelers (8-2) are coming off a huge win over Baltimore to stay atop the AFC North. And Pittsburgh is beginning to set its sights on potential home-field advantage come playoff time. ODDS AND TRENDS The Steelers are a consensus 3.5-point favorite. That includes at BetRivers, where they have been backed by 80 percent of the spread-line money. Pittsburgh's -195 moneyline to simply win the game has been even more popular, drawing 95 percent of all money wagered. The Browns enter Thursday night having failed to cover the spread in nine of their past 12 games. Meanwhile, the Steelers have covered the spread in every game during their five-game win streak. The 37.0 total points line has seen the Over backed by 65 percent of the money and 70 percent of the total bets. Each of Cleveland's past eight November home games has gone under the total points line. PROP PICKS --Steelers WR George Pickens Over 50 Receiving Yards (-195 at DraftKings): Russell Wilson has thrown six touchdowns in the four games since he took over as the starting quarterback. Harris has a trio of scores on the ground and receiving through 10 games. KEY STAT The Browns have won the first quarter in five consecutive home games against the Steelers. THE NEWS The Steelers have certainly been locked in. They are currently riding a five-game winning streak, most recently edging the Baltimore Ravens 18-16 on Sunday. Chris Boswell booted six field goals against Baltimore, while Wilson completed 23 of 36 passes for 205 yards and an interception. Meanwhile, Cleveland continues to go through the wringer. The Browns ended up on the wrong end of a 35-14 blowout while facing the host New Orleans Saints on Sunday, marking their seventh loss in the past eight games. Cleveland now has to go up against one of the most unforgiving defenses in the league. Browns quarterback Jameis Winston is determined to direct a fundamentally sound performance against Pittsburgh, which allows the second-fewest points per game in the NFL (16.2). "It's precision passing. Getting the ball out on time. Elite operation and just doing our job. It's the simple things," Winston said. "This team (the Steelers) is not going to try and fool you. They're going to line up and say, 'Give us your best, we're going to give you our best.'" INJURY REPORT The Browns could be without standout defensive end Myles Garrett, who missed practice on Tuesday because of a hip injury. Linebacker Alex Highsmith is dealing with an ankle issue and was ruled out by the Steelers along with cornerback Cory Trice Jr. (hamstring). THEY SAID IT Wilson is starting to feel like he might be part of something special, but he also doesn't want Pittsburgh to get ahead of itself. "I definitely think that we have a chance (to make a deep playoff run)," said Wilson, who has played in two Super Bowls. "I think the biggest thing for us is continuing to just take each week as the most important week of it all. "I think that it's not really even just the week, it's just the day, it's just the moments in between. I think the greatest teams, the greatest players, in any sport, especially the teams I've been on, is the moment -- it's never too far away. It's right here, right now. And you're just locked into that." PREDICTION Divisional road games on short weeks typically shape up as a daunting task. That's not the case for the Steelers, who will be hyper-focused to put this one out of reach early before enjoying 10 days ahead of a trip to Cleveland.
