A leading figure in the Scottish hydro energy renaissance has described the "defining moment" of the new power storage revolution. Hydropower storage is stepping forward as a “critical technology” and providing “a lifeline for rural communities, well-paying jobs and significant investment in local economies”, according to the entrepreneur who sold a Loch Ness hydro storage project to the Norwegian government. Mark Wilson, founder and chief executive of Lanarkshire-based ILI group has said a more net zero-friendly operating environment that includes a UK Government support mechanism for investors into schemes including pumped storage hydro (PSH), which is entering a new era in this country, and its new clean power proposal. He told The Herald in an exclusive interview: “As renewable energy generation continues to grow, the challenge of how to store and balance this clean power has taken centre stage. Pumped storage hydro is stepping forward as a critical technology, ensuring that the UK delivers on its ambitious Clean Power 2030 (CP30) Action Plan for a net-zero energy system by 2030.” The separate SSE exploratory work at Coire Glas (Image: SSE) He said this is a useful roadmap to transforming its energy system, adding: “It sets out clear targets to drastically reduce carbon emissions, accelerate the deployment of home-grown renewable energy, and build a resilient, reliable grid. “To achieve these goals, long-duration energy storage technologies like PSH are essential. They ensure that renewable energy is available when it’s needed, stabilising the grid during peaks in demand and maintaining energy security." Mr Wilson sold the huge consented pumped storage hydropower project, earlier called Red John after a local lochan and now known as Loch na Cathrach at Loch Ness, to Statkraft, Europe's leading renewables firm Statkraft which is owned by the Norwegian state. It changed hands for an undisclosed sum, but an idea of the scale is given in the potential £1 billion cost of building the project at Loch Ness. Iain Robertson, head of Statkraft Scotland, the new owner of Loch na Cathrach, said the technology is "experiencing a renaissance because of the way it can complement the variability of decentralised renewables like wind and solar". Mr Wilson said: “PSH is not new, but its potential has never been more important. Often described as the ‘backbone of energy storage’, PSH stores excess renewable energy and dispatches it during peak periods, providing the stability and reliability that a decarbonised grid requires. “With a UK pipeline of over nine gigawatts of PSH projects, including our Balliemeanoch project (1.5 GW), the UK is poised to dramatically expand its storage capacity and meet the growing needs of its renewable energy sector.” Mr Wilson continued: “PSH isn’t just a solution to an energy challenge; it’s also a driver of economic opportunity. Recent analysis shows that building out the UK’s PSH pipeline could generate £27 billion in Gross Value Added by 2050 and support over 15,000 jobs annually during construction. “These projects represent a lifeline for rural communities, providing well-paying jobs and significant investment in local economies. “Our Balliemeanoch project alone is expected to create up to 1,000 construction jobs, while delivering clean energy and strengthening the national grid. These projects demonstrate how PSH can create a more equitable economic transition by bringing benefits to communities often overlooked in the renewable energy conversation.” READ OUR WHOLE HYDROPOWER SERIES Part One: 'Vast potential unlocked' as Scotland powers towards new hydro energy revolution All you need to know about the new hydro energy revolution Part Two: Entrepreneur is ‘overnight millionaire’ as he sells power plant plan to energy giant Hydropower 'renaissance' spearheaded by £1bn Scottish energy plant Part Three: Hidden cost of creating Scotland’s new energy powerhouses Questions raised over Scotland's new energy storage farms A commitment to supporting investors into PSH was widely welcomed this autumn by companies also including SSE, carrying out exploratory work at Coire Glas, and Drax, seeking to expand on its Hollow Mountain offering. Mr Wilson said: “A major breakthrough for the sector this year has been the government’s announcement of a cap-and-floor revenue stabilisation mechanism. “This innovative policy provides developers with a guaranteed minimum revenue, reducing investment risks, while capping excessive profits to protect consumers. Modelled after the successful scheme for electricity interconnectors, the cap-and-floor mechanism is expected to unlock billions of pounds in private investment, fast-tracking critical PSH projects. “For technologies like PSH, which require significant upfront investment, this policy is not just helpful, it’s essential. With the scheme expected to open for applications in 2025, the first wave of new PSH projects could be operational by the end of the decade, significantly bolstering the UK’s energy storage capacity.” Mr Wilson said: “The CP30 Action Plan highlights the critical need for scaling up energy storage technologies to meet growing renewable energy demands. It sets a target of deploying four-six GW of LDES capacity by 2030, emphasising PSH as a cornerstone of this strategy. The plan also outlines the need for faster planning approvals, enhanced grid connections, and investment in innovative storage solutions. “PSH, with its proven reliability and scalability, is perfectly positioned to deliver on these goals and underpin the UK’s clean energy system.” He pointed to analysis that indicates that deploying the full PSH pipeline could save the UK electricity system £45 billion by 2050, delivering cost savings to households and reducing emissions in line with net-zero targets. “PSH strengthens the UK’s energy independence by reducing reliance on volatile global gas markets. As the energy system transitions, technologies like PSH provide the flexibility and security needed to build a cleaner, more stable future,” he said. Mr Wilson said 2024 was “a year of progress, but the work is far from over”. “To achieve the CP30 Action Plan, collaboration between government, industry, and communities will be critical. Policymakers must ensure the timely implementation of the cap-and-floor mechanism while continuing to prioritise grid upgrades and support for renewable energy projects. “These energy storage projects are not just about meeting targets. They are about creating a legacy of innovation, resilience, and opportunity. “This is the moment to act decisively. The tools and technologies to achieve a cleaner, fairer energy system are within reach. Let’s ensure that we don’t just meet our goals but surpass them, delivering a brighter future for generations to come.”
The missioneries, especially from USA, France and European countries, helped in the growth of Madras Presidency, especially in the fields of healthcare and education; Tamil Nadu, which was part of the Presidency, benefited from their contributions, says Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services, said here on Saturday. In his inaugural address at the Distance Education Convocation 2024, which was organised by Distance Education Unit of CMC at CMC campus here, Mr. Rajan said that even today, Kanniyakumari remains one of the most literate districts in the State because of the education institutions run by missionaries during those years. Their [missionaries] work to the society is clearly visible in the State’s development, he said. The Minister applauded the contributions made by Ida Scudder, founder of CMC, as she was the earliest missionary to provide medical education for women in the Madras Presidency. This decision of Ms. Scudder has also ensured the inclusion of marginalised sections in the society to gain medical education and restored social justice. Referring CMC as the centre for culture of excellence, Mr. Rajan said that CMC was successfully able to provide distance education in medicine for two decades to students from various parts of the country and overseas. Such distance education, especially in medicine, is challenging because such learning also includes hands-on training for which physical presence is required. However, CMC was able to conduct distance learning courses successfully all these years, he said. Highlighting the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in day-to-day lives in future, the former Finance Minister said that young doctors should not be reluctant in adapting to latest technology, including AI, especially in healthcare. They can use emerging technologies like AI and data analysis in their profession. For example, they can store history of patients’ interactions with them and other data, using such advanced technologies, he said. Of total 465 graduates, 262 graduates have received their degrees in person at the convocation. On the occasion, Rev. Mathew Abraham, Director-General, Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI), Senior professor Solomon Sathishkumar, principal, CMC, and I. Rajesh, medical superintendent, CMC, were present. Hegseth fights to save Pentagon nomination as sources say Trump considers DeSantisEvery summer, Australians look for ways to cool down. Millions of us head to the beach. Those inland head for rivers, waterholes and waterfalls. But cooling off comes with risks, from dangerous rips in the ocean to hidden logs in rivers. In recent years, a surprising number of people have died at waterfalls and waterholes. These natural spectacles have hidden dangers, from slippery rocks to unexpected currents, to turbulent water. While many of us know about the risks of drowning in the ocean, rivers are actually more deadly. Over the last 22 years, slightly more people have drowned in rivers and creeks than any other body of water. The drowning figures from 2022–23 show 76 people died in rivers and creeks, compared to 75 at beaches. Every drowning death leaves a trail of grief. Here’s what you can do to stay safe. How common are these deaths? Deaths at popular waterfalls in recent years include: Isabella Falls, inland from Cairns: three deaths in the last two years Millaa Millaa Falls, inland from Cairns: two deaths this year Dangar Falls in northern New South Wales: three deaths since 2012. Then there are locations such as Babinda Boulders south of Cairns. While more waterhole than waterfall, this famous location has claimed 21 lives since 1959, leading authorities to fence off dangerous channels and pools where churning water can push swimmers under and keep them there. Even so, deaths continue . Why are waterfalls dangerous? As water cascades, it often carves out a deep pool, known as a plunge pool. Visitors often swim at these pools, drawn by the natural beauty and deeper water. But these idyllic scenes come with hidden risks. For instance, where the waterfall hits the pool, it creates turbulence and currents. If large volumes of water are falling, the pressure can be enough to push people underneath. Currents can also carry people underneath a rock ledge and trap them. Adrenaline-seekers might jump off the lip of the waterfall. This is very risky, especially if you don’t know how deep the water is. Droplets and mist from the falls mean the rocky sides are inevitably slippery and often covered in algae or moss. Finally, there’s the popularity factor. The more inexperienced people who go, the higher the chance of something going wrong. Social media reels of influencers at beautiful locations encourage more people to seek out secluded waterfalls. Are these deaths getting more common? We don’t know. That’s because deaths at waterfalls are rolled into statistics for river-related deaths. By one estimate 5% of drownings in inland water sources took place at waterfalls or swimming holes over the ten years to 2021. We do know there’s been a surge in selfie deaths worldwide in recent years. Some of these deaths take place at waterfalls, usually when visitors jump the fence or make their way to the lip of the waterfall before slipping and dying. When you’re searching for the perfect selfie location, you’re not paying close attention to risks. If you do get into trouble, help is often a long way away. Rescuers can take hours to arrive, while drowning happens very quickly. While popular beaches usually have lifeguards able to spring into action, waterfalls, waterholes and rivers do not. How can we stay safe? Waterfalls are some of the world’s great natural spectacles. The most famous attract millions of visitors each year, from Niagara Falls on the Canada-United States border to Victoria Falls between Zambia and Zimbabwe to Venezuela’s Angel Falls, the tallest uninterrupted waterfall. They are created when soft rock is washed away, or where a river meets a natural drop such as a cliff. We’re drawn to these places, and that’s not going to change. So how can we visit safely? Authorities have put up signs around many popular swimming spots, including waterfalls. These can be useful to indicate danger or prohibit an activity. But most people simply ignore them, according to a Queensland government spokesperson. The most important thing is to proceed with caution. Just as you would check a new beach for signs of rip currents or dangerous waves, you should check waterfalls and waterholes for hidden dangers. Don’t assume picturesque places are safe because they’re pretty. Familiarity matters too. Many people who have died at waterfalls have been visitors, whether from interstate or overseas . If you grew up near a waterfall or waterhole, you’re more likely to have learned about the dangers. If you’ve checked the swimming hole, swimming should be reasonably safe. But it’s best to avoid going directly under the waterfall. Climbing waterfalls is very dangerous. It might look fun, but slippery rocks can send you crashing to your doom, while turbulent water and hidden rocks under the surface can be lethal. The lip of a waterfall is extremely slippery and gravity is not on your side. Alcohol and waterfalls are a bad mix. Alcohol makes some people take more risks. Swim first, drink later. Check the chance of rain before you go, and not only at the waterfall but upstream. Intense rain upstream can create flash floods surprisingly quickly, sweeping you off your feet . And if you’re in northern Australia, you need to do one more vital check – for crocodiles. Many popular waterfalls and swimming holes are seen to be safe because they are elevated or far from the sea. But crocs can pop up in unexpected places . Does this mean you should avoid waterways entirely? No. As Paul McCartney advised: Don’t go jumping waterfalls Please, keep to the lake People who jump waterfalls Sometimes can make mistakes.

The SEC move comes as the company looks at operationalising more capacity at its Khavda project in Gujarat, where it is building a 30 GW solar project, claimed to be the world's largest renewable energy park. About 2.2 GW of the facility has been operationalised until September. Adani Green Energy currently has a renewable energy capacity of 11.2 GW and plans to take that up to 50 GW by 2030. The controversy revolves around an 8 GW of solar+manufacturing linked project won by Adani Green Energy wherein the company has signed the majority of power purchase agreements. "The assets are being built under multiple special purpose vehicles where we can see existing exposure of ₹5,200 crore by financial institutions , none by banks and ₹2,700 crore in foreign currency borrowings," Bernstein Research said in a report on Friday. Even in the worst case, if the power purchase agreement gets terminated, the land and solar assets are still there and can be sold off or used for another contract, it said. "Renewable assets are literally like bonds." On the back of the charges, Adani Green Energy cancelled plans to raise $600 million in US dollar-denominated bonds on Thursday. The bond had been priced but was pulled after US prosecutors charged Adani in the alleged bribery scheme.
