We came across UK-based when its Cyber Recovery Orchestration achieved Veeam Ready Security status in November. This was followed by an email interview with marketing head Ben Hodge, which revealed some surprising points about the company’s relationship with Index Engines and Rubrik. Index Engines is the solution that Predatar’s capabilities get confused with the most, but they are actually tackling the problem of malware in backups differently. In my opinion, Predatar and Index Engines actually complement one another beautifully (not that anyone is using both as far as I am aware). Index Engines excels at scanning data on ingest detecting anomalies and identifying encrypted data that might slip past other tools. This gives customers peace of mind that only unencrypted data is vaulted, which is crucial for securing backups. Predatar is all about validating recoverability. It focuses on continuous recovery testing and deep malware scanning of the data that resides within backups (and snapshots). Predatar continually mounts and powers-up workloads to validate recoverability and then runs a malware scan using built-in XDR tools in a Predatar CleanRoom environment – Index Engines does not do this. The Predatar team claims to have found malware hidden in backups at 79 percent of the customers that use it, which goes to show that Predatar is solving a very real problem. In addition to validating the cleanliness and recoverability of data, Predatar also records recovery times, allowing users to validate their SLAs/RTOs. I think a lot of the confusion comes from the fact that Predatar also includes backup anomaly detection – but that is really secondary to our core proposition of recovery validation. Predatar uses the anomaly detection as just one mechanism to help prioritize which backups/snapshots to test next. So, to recap... Index Engines ensures clean, encryption-free vaulting, while we guarantee reliable and proven malware-free recovery. Rubrik, IBM, Veeam, and HPE have all acknowledged (not all of them publicly) that Predatar does something different to their own offerings, and for now at least they consider us to be partners rather than competitors. Rubrik, IBM, and HPE all participated in our recent Control24 user summit. As per the question above, I’ll focus on Rubrik specifically here. Rubrik has some fantastic tools to spot and track malware and signs of encryption in data. However, once Rubrik finds an issue, that’s were it stops. Rubrik doesn’t provide any automation to push suspect data to a cleanroom for testing, and Rubrik doesn’t have a way of doing recovery testing at scale. In the words of Rubrik, “Predatar picks up where Rubrik stops.” Not really. HPE has something called the Cyber Resilience Vault (Zerto is a component of it), but it’s missing a “Predatar-type” component that validates the recoverability and cleanliness of the data that is stored in it. The beginning: Predatar was originally designed as a tool to help the MSP scale up by automating repetitive maintenance tasks and reporting – thus meaning Silverstring could manage more customer’s backups without employing more people. Step 2. What the Crunchbase blurb is about: We realized that other MSPs (or resellers with an ambition to become MSPs) could benefit from Predatar in the same way Silverstring did. We went to market with Predatar as a tool for MSPs. Step 3. The cyber recovery piece; we continued to develop the platform with more features that MSPs would benefit from. This included automated recovery testing and later malware detection tools that would allow MSPs to guarantee the backups they were managing were recoverable and infection-free. The reaction to these new tools was huge. Interest in the new tools eclipsed the original reporting and management tools. Step 4. Marketing focus: Earlier this year we took the decision to focus solely on the cyber recovery proposition, which is applicable to MSPs and end users alike. The South African Defence Forces (SADF) have ramped up security measures along the Malaladrift area, which borders Zimbabwe, as part of a heightened effort to curb cross-border smuggling and prevent illegal border crossings across the Limpopo River. With the holiday season approaching, illegal activities, including smuggling and undocumented border jumping, tend to spike as many Zimbabwean nationals return home or seek opportunities in South Africa due to the struggling economy in Zimbabwe. SADF spokesperson Major Shilangoma Mahlahlane confirmed that the military has intensified patrols in the area, covering a 55-kilometre radius. He explained that security forces were on high alert for smugglers and border jumpers. "Our mandate is border safeguarding. We are covering a 55-kilometre radius of this area. There are hotspots where vehicles are crossing, hotspots where cigarettes and explosives are crossing," Mahlahlane said during an interview with the State broadcaster, SABC News. He emphasized that the SADF's primary objective was to disrupt illicit activities and prevent illegal goods from entering or leaving South Africa. "So our mandate, at all costs, is to disrupt these from taking place and stop whatever should not leave or come into South Africa illegally," he added. Illegal syndicates, often referred to as "magumaguma," are known to facilitate these cross-border crimes. These gangs have become increasingly sophisticated, using vantage points to monitor SADF patrols, enabling them to sneak in and out of the neighbouring country undetected. In some cases, these smugglers even use donkey-drawn scotch carts to transport contraband across the now dry Limpopo River. Despite increased vigilance, security at the Beitbridge Border Post remains a challenge, with many undocumented Zimbabweans still managing to find ways to enter and leave South Africa illegally. While some of these individuals are seeking better economic opportunities in South Africa, others have turned to full-time smuggling, trafficking goods such as vehicles, drugs, cigarettes, fuel, and electrical appliances across the border. The surge in illegal cross-border activities is causing concern for both South African authorities and Zimbabwean officials, as the border remains porous, and the demand for smuggled goods increases, particularly during peak holiday periods. Authorities are now focusing on enhancing both physical and technological surveillance to better monitor and control the situation. ATLANTA — Jacobian Morgan threw a pair of touchdown passes to Joanes Fortilien, Irv Mulligan added two short touchdown runs, and Jackson State defeated South Carolina State 28-7 on Saturday in the Celebration Bowl that serves as the HBCU national championship. The Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Tigers (12-2) outgained the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's Bulldogs (9-3) 383-211, giving up just 59 yards through three quarters to win their 10th straight game. But the Independence Bowl and Louisiana Tech announced on Saturday that the Bulldogs will take on the 19th-ranked Black Knights instead. Nevin Shapiro, the former Miami booster whose rogue involvement with the school led to a massive NCAA investigation and significant sanctions against the Hurricanes, had his sentence for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme commuted by President Joe Biden. Shapiro was among the 1,499 recipients of commutations announced by the White House on Friday. Federal records show that Shapiro, who was initially sentenced in 2011 to serve 20 years in prison and repay his jilted investors nearly $83 million, will be officially listed as released on Dec. 22. Court records show Shapiro has been on home confinement since 2020. The commutation of his sentence only “reduces the period of incarceration,” the Department of Justice said, adding that “it does not imply forgiveness of the underlying offense, but simply remits a portion of the punishment.” Quarterback Jackson Arnold is transferring to Auburn after two seasons at Oklahoma. Andretti in September stepped aside from leading his namesake organization, so the 11th team will be called Cadillac F1 and be run by new Andretti Global majority owners Dan Towriss and Mark Walter. The team will use Ferrari engines its first two years until GM has a Cadillac engine built for competition in time for the 2028 season. Towriss is the the CEO and president of Group 1001 and entered motorsports via Andretti's IndyCar team when he signed on financial savings platform Gainbridge as a sponsor. Towriss is now a major part of the motorsports scene with ownership stakes in both Spire Motorsports' NASCAR team and Wayne Taylor Racing's sports car team. Max Verstappen won his fourth consecutive championship in Saturday night's race, the third and final stop in the United States for the top motorsports series in the world. Grid expansion in F1 is both infrequent and often unsuccessful. Four teams were granted entries in 2010 that should have pushed the grid to 13 teams and 26 cars for the first time since 1995. One team never made it to the grid and the other three had vanished by 2017. There is only one American team on the current F1 grid — owned by California businessman Gene Haas — but it is not particularly competitive and does not field American drivers. Andretti’s dream was to field a truly American team with American drivers. The fight to add this team has been going on for three-plus years and F1 initially denied the application despite approval from F1 sanctioning body FIA . The existing 10 teams, who have no voice in the matter, also largely opposed expansion because of the dilution in prize money and the billions of dollars they’ve already invested in the series. Andretti in 2020 tried and failed to buy the existing Sauber team. From there, he applied for grid expansion and partnered with GM, the top-selling manufacturer in the United States. The inclusion of GM was championed by the FIA and president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who said Michael Andretti’s application was the only one of seven applicants to meet all required criteria to expand F1’s current grid. “General Motors is a huge global brand and powerhouse in the OEM world and is working with impressive partners," Ben Sulayem said Monday. At one point, F1 asked GM to find another team to partner with besides Andretti. GM refused and F1 said it would revisit the Andretti application if and when Cadillac had an engine ready to compete. “Formula 1 has maintained a dialogue with General Motors, and its partners at TWG Global, regarding the viability of an entry following the commercial assessment and decision made by Formula 1 in January 2024,” F1 said in a statement. “Over the course of this year, they have achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the 11th team GM/Cadillac, and that GM will enter as an engine supplier at a later time. China Medical System: First Prescriptions For Innovative Drug Lumeblue® Issued In ChinaI've put dozens of great smartwatches on my wrist to test them for CNET -- and dozens more not-so-great watches -- but I love going bare-wristed for a few days after finishing a review to give myself a break. After wrapping up my review of the Apple Watch Series 10 , however, something unexpected happened: I didn't want to take the gadget off. I've always been on the lookout for a hybrid watch that strikes the right balance between a traditional wristwatch and a smartwatch. Plenty of wearables over the years have promised just that, like the Withings Scanwatch range. The Series 10 strikes the ideal balance for me because it doesn't compromise on connectivity, fitness tracking features or the overall look. That's because of the LTPO 3 technology that lets the screen refresh at 1Hz and gives the Series 10 a ticking second hand on a few watch faces, even when the display isn't actively being used. It makes Apple's device feel like a regular watch when I'm not actively using it, which is different from any other smartwatch I've tested, and you can still get it after Black Friday for $70 off before Cyber Monday. This watch ticks the boxes for me I like being able to change up the look by switching between the Reflections watch face, with its sweeping "analog" second hand, and Activity Digital, with its digital seconds counter. I wish there were more watch faces that supported this ticking second hand. There is Flux , but I've found myself siding with Redditors who think it's kind of goofy. (If you've found a color combination that makes it feel less comical, let me know!) The ticking second hand isn't just an aesthetic choice, or for the times when I'm anxiously checking to make sure I'm not too early for my next meeting. It's also practical for folks in different professions, like health care workers who need to have a second hand even after the display times out. More than the ticking second hand, it's the display itself I was skeptical that the Series 10's wide-angle OLED display would make that much difference to the viewing experience. Apple says it's up to 40% brighter than earlier watch displays when you're looking at it off-axis. So of course I had to compare it to every other Apple Watch in my review cabinet, including last year's Series 9. When using my eyes alone I'm not able to quantify how much brighter it appears as a percentage, there's no question the Series 10 is easier to see and looks brighter than other Apple Watch models with the same watch face. The Series 10 doesn't have the same battery life or rugged construction, but I miss its display when I have to switch to the $799 Apple Watch Ultra 2. Why the Series 10 makes a great gift It's not just the display that's made it hard for me to remove the Series 10 from my wrist. The bill namely the Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Bill-2024 will be introduced in the coming Assembly session. Minister Patel noted that Rajasthan currently lacks specific legislation to address illegal conversions. Once enacted, the law will impose stringent penalties for such activities, including declaring marriages for the purpose of forced conversions invalid. Crimes under this law will be non-bailable and cognizable, aligning with similar statutes in other states. The bill was approved during a cabinet meeting which was chaired by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma.
