Canadian National Railway Co. stock falls Friday, underperforms market

MECHANICSBURG – Six and one-half minutes and seventy-eight yards separated the Troy football team from the Class 2A state championship on a windy and cold afternoon at Cumberland Valley High School’s Chapman Field. The Trojans just saw their slim lead evaporate midway through the fourth quarter and trailed Central Clarion by six points. Only a touchdown and extra point would get the job done. • Sign up for PennLive’s daily high school sports newsletter Troy marched down the field smartly as the clocked winked down under the two-minute mark with the ball resting on the Central Clarion 16. Senior Mason Smith appeared to drop back for a halfback option pass, but instead, cut across the field and scrambled 16 yards for the game-tying TD. Gavin Lykon-Leffler, who missed a first quarter extra point, split the uprights to give the Trojans a one-point lead. Troy snuffed out Central Clarion’s final rally and survived a 50-yard field goal attempt as time expired, to win the 2A state title, 25-24, over the Wildcats in a game featuring six lead changes. The 2024 2A championship is the first in Troy football history and it marks just the fourth time a District 4 school has annexed a state crown. “I told these guys they are pioneers and there’s a reason pioneers are remembered forever, because they’ve done something no one else has done,” said Troy head coach Jim Smith. “it’s important for our area to show other teams that it’s possible. Troy finishes a state championship season with an unblemished 16-0 record. Central Clarion, the District 4 Class 2A winners, close the year at 15-1. THE STARS Troy’s four-pronged rushing attack of Gilliland, Mason, fullback Kael Millard and quarterback Evan Woodward combined for a total of 264 yards on 54 carries Brendan Gillilland spearheaded the Trojans rushing game, toting the rock 25 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Gillilland also hauled in a 20-yard Woodward pass for a score. Central Clarion QB Jase Ferguson completed 17-of-24 passes for 189 yards and two TD’s – both to Ethan Rex, who snared a total of 7 passes for 79 yards. Ferguson ran for 79 yards and a rushing touchdown. GAME DECIDING MOMENTS The Trojans’ ultimate go-ahead drive took 12 plays in the span of 5:22 and left Central Clarion with 1:15 to work with. Ferguson returned the ensuing kickoff to the Troy 46 and converted a fourth-and-13 with 16 seconds to play with the ball at the Trojans 33. Two incomplete passes forced Central Clarion to try a 50-yard field goal into the wind on the game’s final play. The attempt fell short and wide. Central Clarion took a 16-12 lead into the fourth quarter on two touchdown passes from Ferguson to Rex in the span on 3:03 – the first from 18 yards out and the second from 49 yards away. Troy answered with a monster 14-play, 92-yard drive that ate up more than seven minutes, capped by Gillilland’s third score of the day, this time from 20 yards out. Central Clarion quickly re-took the lead with five pass plays spanning 62 yards with Ferguson rushing to pay dirt from 11 out and hitting Kohen Kemmer for a two-point conversion and a 24-18 lead. THEY SAID IT “(Central Clarion) settled down and made plays. We knew they would. It was important that our offense, when they got the ball, used a bunch of time to keep them off the field. That was part of our theory and it worked. I had no doubt that we would take them right to end and I’m proud that they stood up there when it mattered. We have a lot of athletes and we don’t know who’s day it’s going to be. In the end, it was our line. We heard all week about this big line from Clarion and I think we dominated the line of scrimmage,” – Troy head coach Jim Smith. “It’s awesome. It’s great. The support is great, the crowd here is double, triple what they had here. We came in here and wanted to be physical on offense and that’s exactly what we did, especially on that last drive. We just had to keep pushing. We knew it was going to be tough. We knew they were coming out in the second half and take it to us. We just had to stay tough and trust in our game plan and our defense,” – Troy’s Brendan Gillilland. Omar orders uninterrupted services to mitigate snowfall impact Review snow clearance, restoration of power Ganderbal: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened a video conference meeting with all district across Jammu and Kashmir to review snow clearance operations and restoration of essential services following heavy snowfall in the Kashmir Valley. The meeting held at the video conference hall in Ganderbal, was attended in person by Advisor to the CM Nasir Aslam Wani, Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Shyambir, ADC Ganderbal, and other senior district officials. Chief Secretary, Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, and Deputy Commissioners from all districts participated via video conferencing. The snowfall, which began yesterday, has disrupted normal life in many districts across the valley. During the meeting, Deputy Commissioners presented updates on snow clearance, restoration of power and water supply and emergency response to deal with inclement weather. The Chief Minister directed Deputy Commissioners to personally supervise snow clearance operations, emphasizing the need to obtain photographic evidence of cleared areas to ensure thorough removal and prevent freezing road condition as temperatures drop. He called for a proactive approach, urging officials to deploy adequate manpower and machinery on the ground. District administrations were instructed to provide two-hourly updates to the CM’s office and the Chief Secretary’s office to keep the government apprised of the situation. The Chief Engineer of Public Health Engineering (PHE) informed the CM that 90% of the water supply across the valley has been restored, with efforts underway to address the remaining 10%. The Divisional Commissioner of Jammu reported that power and water supply in Jammu districts remain unaffected, while the Chief Secretary confirmed steady progress in restoring electricity feeders and assured that district hospitals are functioning smoothly. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of ensuring 100% attendance of doctors and paramedical staff at all district and sub-district hospitals to effectively manage emergencies. Special instructions were issued to the Deputy Commissioner Budgam to coordinate with airport authorities to assist stranded tourists and to provide transportation, if required. The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir assured that sufficient stocks of essential commodities, including food and other civil supplies, are available in all districts. Commending officials for their efforts, the Chief Minister urged them to remain vigilant, proactive, and responsive to the needs of the people during this challenging period. He emphasized the importance of seamless coordination and uninterrupted services to mitigate the impact of the snowfall on the public.NASSAU, Bahamas — Scottie Scheffler birdied every hole but the par 3s on the front nine at Albany Golf Club on Friday and finished his bogey-free round with an 8-under 64 that gave him a two-shot lead in the Hero World Challenge. Two months off did nothing to slow the world's No. 1 player. Scheffler already has eight victories this year and is in position to get another before the end of the year. Scheffler was at 13-under 131, two ahead of Akshay Bhatia (66) and Justin Thomas (67), both of whom had to save par on the 18th hole to stay in range going into the weekend. Scheffler started with a lob wedge to 2 feet for birdie and never slowed until after he went out in 29 to seize control of the holiday tournament against a 20-man field. Scheffler cooled slightly on the back nine, except it didn't feel that way to him. "Front nine, just things were going my way. Back nine, maybe not as much," Scheffler said. "A couple shots could end up closer to the hole, a couple putts go in, just little things." Asked if he felt any frustration he didn't take it lower — he once shot 59 at the TPC Boston during the FedEx Cup playoffs — Scheffler sounded bemused. "I think in this game I think a lot of all y'all are looking for perfection out of us," he said. "Today I shot 8 under on the golf course, not something I hang my head about. A lot of good things out there — clean card, bogey-free, eight birdies. Overall, I think I'm pretty pleased." Thomas felt his 67 was stress-free, particularly the way he was driving the ball. The wind laid down again, rare for the Bahamas, though it is expected to pick up on the weekend. Thomas wasn't concerned to see Scheffler get off to a hot start, especially with three par 5s on the front nine and a short par 4 that at worst leaves a flip wedge to the green. "You literally can birdie every hole as soft as the greens are," Thomas said. "He's a great player, a great wedge player, and you have a lot of birdie holes to start. I'm honestly surprised he only shot 8 under. It's a sneaky course because if you fall asleep on some shots, you can get out of position. But if you're on and focused and really in control of everything — like these last two days with no wind — you can just make so many birdies." Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley had a 67 and was four shots behind. No matter how benign the conditions, it wasn't always easy. Cameron Young, who opened with a 64 for a two-shot lead, followed with a 75 despite making five birdies. That included a double bogey on the final hole when his approach tumbled down the bank into the rocks framing the lake that goes all the way down the 18th hole. Patrick Cantlay was trying to keep pace playing alongside Scheffler, but he had three bogeys over the final seven holes and fell seven shots behind with a 71. The tournament, hosted by Tiger Woods, is unofficial but offers world ranking points to all but the bottom three players because of the small field. It's the weakest field in 25 years, but Scheffler at No. 1 gives it enough cachet. He is the first player since Woods in 2009 to start and finish a year at No. 1 in the world. And even after a layoff — giving him time to tinker with a new putting stroke — it looks like it might be a while before anyone changes that. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

NoneDowntown Colorado Springs diner announces closure at year's endATLANTA — Former President Jimmy Carter has been leaning on his faith but also his stubbornness during his lengthy hospice, according to his grandson. Carter, who turned 100 years old in October, entered home hospice in his hometown of Plains, Ga., in February of last year. At the time, the family thought he might only live days or weeks longer. “We are not the ones responsible for when and how people leave this world in this kind of a way, and (Jimmy Carter’s) faith story is one that has been important to him, and this is another part of that,” Jason Carter said Monday on The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s “Politically Georgia” podcast. Jimmy Carter taught Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains for many years before his health deteriorated. “On a more personal level, I just think he’s stubborn. I mean, he’s never given up on anything in his life and he’s not going to start now,” Jason Carter added. The former president did not attend public events celebrating his Oct. 1 birthday. But in mid-October, as early voting in the presidential election got underway, he filled out a ballot for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris that was delivered to a drop box at the Sumter County Courthouse, according to family members. Jason Carter said his grandfather, who has struggled with health problems for years, has days where he is more active than others. “He’s got big, good days where he’s pretty active, he’s up and active and talking and enjoying, including in politics. But most days he’s not that active, he’s going to sleep a lot of the time,” he told the AJC.India needs to prioritize workplace safety amid rapid industrialization, say industry experts
