Dennis in a group photo with the inaugural cohort of SMK Long Bedian Form 5 graduates. MIRI (Dec 23): SMK Long Bedian in Sungai Apoh made history last Friday with its inaugural Form 5 graduation ceremony, celebrating 41 students completing their secondary education. According to Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau, the school, which was formally categorised as Comprehensive 9, was officially upgraded to secondary school status this year. “Some of the graduates attended the school from kindergarten until Form 5, with the school being granted secondary school status this year, while others have only joined from Form 1 onwards. “To be present in witnessing the first cohort in graduating their secondary education is overwhelming,” he said in his speech. Dennis also remarked that SMK Long Bedian has always been close to his heart, and that he often pays visits to the school, hence, remarking why he understands the challenges faced by the students and their parents. He added that the obstacles include the long commute to school, lack of quality learning facilities, and lack of nutritional meals needed for the students’ development. In this regard, Dennis had previously suggested for the school to put together a report proposing for additional teaching aid and assistance for the students, which he had later presented to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Following that, Abang Johari granted RM100,000 for the school to purchase additional teaching aid as well as funds to invite a educational specialist to present a talk on the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination. “You (students) must concentrate on your studies in order to change the livelihood of your family as well as your own future. “The conclusion of your secondary education is just halfway of achieving your dreams. Continue to work hard, remain competitive and apply to state-owned universities,” said Dennis. To this end, he reminded the graduates regarding the Sarawak government’s free education policy starting from 2026 onwards, and urged them to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields to be eligible for the policy.
Defence Minister Israel Katz on Monday acknowledged that Israel had killed former Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier this year, as he warned the military would “decapitate” the leadership of Yemen’s Huthi rebels. “We will strike hard at the Huthis... and decapitate their leadership — just as we did with Haniyeh, (Yahya) Sinwar, and (Hassan) Nasrallah in Tehran, Gaza, and Lebanon, we will do so in Hodeida and Sanaa,” Katz said. His remarks at an event at the defence ministry mark the first public acknowledgement that Israel was behind the late July killing of Haniyeh in the Iranian capital. “Anyone who raises a hand against Israel will have his hand cut off, and the long arm of the IDF (Israeli military) will strike him and hold him accountable,” Katz said, according to a statement issued by the ministry. Until now Israel had never admitted to killing Haniyeh, but Iran and Hamas had blamed it for the Hamas political leader’s death. On September 27, Israel killed Nasrallah in a Beirut bombing, which was followed by the killing of Haniyeh’s successor Sinwar on October 16 in Gaza. By Maria Salette Ontiveros, The Dallas Morning News (TNS) DALLAS — Amid the busy holiday shipping season, the U.S. Postal Service is sounding an urgent warning about a scam being sent via text message to unsuspecting users. According to postal officials, the scam consists of cellphone owners receiving a text message that says a USPS package can’t be delivered because of missing information. USPS officials say the message includes a text link that could expose the user’s personal information, including financial details, to unknown scammers when clicked. “The criminals want to receive personally identifiable information such as: account usernames and passwords, Social Security Number, date of birth, credit and debit card numbers, personal identification numbers, or other sensitive information,” the news release says. Authorities are calling this scam “ smishing,” a more sophisticated deceptive practice where users pretend to be from a legitimate company or individual and then provide a link that allows users to provide some type of personal data, according to the Federal Communications Commission. Postal officials say their customers can receive automated updates about the delivery status of mail or packages, but mail customers have to sign up on the official page of USPS. USPS also has a service that is called Informed Delivery, where you can receive emails and updates as the package gets scanned. To sign up for this service, you should visit the official page of USPS. How can I report a scam? To report a scam or possible smishing incident, USPS asks customers to take screenshot of text message, paste it into an email and send it to spam@uspis.gov . The email must include the victim’s name, a screenshot of the fraudulent text message and any other relevant details. Mahidol University's Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital has launched a groundbreaking training platform using virtual reality to teach medical procedures involving facial anatomy to reduce reliance on traditional cadaver-based approaches. Details were unveiled during the "Advancing Education with 3D Anatomy Software and Virtual Reality for Facial Injections" workshop held earlier this month in collaboration with South Korea's SurgiMind Inc. Dr Apichat Asavamongkolkul, dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, emphasised the faculty's commitment to modernising medical education using technology. "One of the faculty's core missions is to produce graduates, healthcare professionals and specialised physicians who can meet future demand," he said. "Today, technology plays a crucial role in the medical field. It enables more learning efficiency while minimising resource consumption." Dr Rungsima Wanitphakdeedecha, head of the faculty's Department of Dermatology and Siriraj Skin Laser Center, said medical students started practising facial procedures using tomato skins to simulate human facial skin. They then progress to synthetic models featuring artificial skin before advancing to cadaver-based training. However, cosmetic procedures like botulinum toxin and dermal filler injections consume cadaver resources, prompting the search for alternative training methods, Dr Rungsima said. This led to a collaboration with SurgiMind in 2019, she said. Kim Il, CEO of SurgiMind, said the latest surgical innovation involves mixed reality (MR), which combines VR and augmented reality. He said the platform allows students to use specialised holographic glasses to visualise and manipulate 3D anatomical models in real-world environments. This immersive technology enables hands-on practice in a simulated clinical setting. Mr Kim added the programme's developers are also developing human models used for simulating facial procedures. They are expected to be introduced within two years. As an online platform, the programme is accessible to Mahidol University students free of charge. Plans for international expansion and gamification are underway, to help ensure students enjoy an engaging, modern educational experience. "This initiative exemplifies Siriraj Hospital's dedication to advancing medical education, research and healthcare services, and driving global progress in medical innovation and healthcare training," Mr Kim said.
In late December, Donald Trump suggested the United States should retake control of the Panama Canal in his second term. He claims Panama is imposing “ridiculous” fees on ships passing through this vital waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Panama Canal is a man-made waterway that cuts through central Panama for 51 miles, using a system of locks and reservoirs to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This route saves ships from traveling an extra 7,000 miles around South America’s Cape Horn. “The Panama Canal is considered a VITAL National Asset for the United States, due to its critical role to America’s Economy and National Security,” Trump said on Truth Social on Dec. 21. “The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the U.S. This complete ‘rip-off’ of our Country will immediately stop,” he added. Trump repeated these claims during a speech at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Arizona on Dec. 22. “If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America in full quickly and without question,” he said. Following Trump’s comments, Google search data shows there’s been a spike in searches of people asking which country — the U.S. or Panama — has authority over the Panama Canal. THE QUESTION Does the U.S. have any authority over the Panama Canal? THE SOURCES THE ANSWER No, the U.S. does not have any authority over the Panama Canal, but it used to. Sign up for the VERIFY Fast Facts daily Newsletter! WHAT WE FOUND The U.S. does not have any authority over the Panama Canal. The waterway, which was built by the U.S. in the early 1900s, opened in 1914 and remained under U.S. government control until treaties signed in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter set terms for its eventual transfer to Panama. The two countries jointly operated the canal until December 1999, after which Panama assumed full control. On Dec. 22, in response to Trump’s comments, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino posted a video on X declaring that “every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to belong” to his country. Without mentioning Trump by name, Mulino addressed the president-elect’s complaints over rising fees for ships crossing the canal, saying they are set by experts who take into account operational costs, and supply and demand factors. “The tariffs are not set on a whim,” Mulino said. He noted that Panama has expanded the canal over the years to increase ship traffic “on its own initiative,” and added that shipping fee increases help pay for improvements. “Panamanians may have different views on many issues, but when it comes to our canal, and our sovereignty, we will all unite under our Panamanian flag,” Mulino said. A little over an hour later, Trump responded to Mulino’s remarks on Truth Social, saying: “We’ll see about that!” He also posted a picture of a U.S. flag planted in the canal zone under the phrase, “Welcome to the United States Canal!” The Panama Canal’s history An effort to establish a canal through Panama began with the French in 1880, but financial troubles made the initiative fail after nearly nine years of little progress, according to the Embassy of Panama in the United States . Malaria, yellow fever and other tropical diseases devastated a workforce that was already struggling with especially dangerous terrain and harsh working conditions in the jungle. These conditions eventually cost more than 20,000 lives by some estimates, the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Historian says on its website . At this time, Panama was a province of Colombia, which refused to ratify a subsequent 1901 treaty licensing U.S. interests to build the Panama Canal. President Theodore Roosevelt responded to Colombia’s refusal by dispatching U.S. warships to Panama’s Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The U.S. also pre-wrote a constitution that would be ready after Panamanian independence, which gave American forces “the right to intervene in any part of Panama, to re-establish public peace and constitutional order.” In part because Colombian troops were unable to traverse harsh jungles, Panama declared an effectively bloodless independence within hours on Nov. 3, 1903. The newly-declared Republic of Panama soon signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903 , which provided the U.S. with a 10-mile wide strip of land for the canal, a one-time $10 million payment to Panama, and an annual annuity of $250,000. The U.S. also agreed to guarantee the independence of Panama, according to the Office of the Historian. After more than a decade of construction, the U.S. finished building the canal on Aug. 15, 1914. Almost immediately, some Panamanians began questioning the validity of U.S. control of the canal, which led to what became known in the country as the “generational struggle” to take it over. The U.S. annulled its right to intervene in Panama in the 1930s. By the 1970s, with its administrative costs sharply increasing, the U.S. government spent years negotiating with Panama to cede control of the waterway. The Carter administration worked with the government of Omar Torrijos, and the two sides eventually decided that their best chance for ratification was to submit two treaties to the U.S. Senate , the “Permanent Neutrality Treaty” and the “Panama Canal Treaty.” The first, which continues in perpetuity, gives the U.S. the right to act to ensure the canal remains open and secure. The second stated that the U.S. would turn over the canal to Panama on Dec. 31, 1999. Both were signed in 1977 and ratified the following year. “At noon on December 31, 1999, Panama took over full operation, administration and maintenance of the Canal, in compliance with the Torrijos-Carter Treaties negotiated with the United States in 1977,” said the Embassy of Panama. “The waterway is now managed by the Panama Canal Authority, an autonomous government entity.” Jorge Luis Quijano, who served as the Panama Canal’s administrator from 2014 to 2019, says the neutrality treaty does give the U.S. the right to act if the canal’s operation is threatened due to military conflict — but not to reassert control. “There’s no clause of any kind in the neutrality agreement that allows for the taking back of the canal,” Quijano told the Associated Press. “Legally, there’s no way, under normal circumstances, to recover territory that was used previously.” Benjamin Gedan, director of the Latin America Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., agrees. “There’s very little wiggle room, absent a second U.S. invasion of Panama, to retake control of the Panama Canal in practical terms,” Gedan said.
