ALL the places of interest and local food stops in Petaling Jaya’s oldest township are marked out in the “PJ Old Town Cultural and Food Map”. The project, conceptualised by Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung, is a pilot initiative undertaken to inject life into the city’s old town. Lee embarked on the project to highlight the historical places, landmarks and eateries in PJ Old Town after setting up his service centre in 2023. “I decided to embark on this project to highlight the historical places, landmarks and dining places after setting up my service centre in Petaling Jaya Old Town in May 2023. “I find that this area has its own beauty and characteristics that are different from other urban areas in Petaling Jaya. “People will get to experience a different vibe and atmosphere when they come here,” said Lee, describing the neighbourhood as having a blend of nostalgic charm and modern living. Petaling Jaya Old Town, better known as PJ Old Town, comprises Sections 1, 2, 3 and 4. It was built as a satellite town in Selangor in 1952 by the British to address overcrowding in Kuala Lumpur. The PJ Old Town Cultural and Food Map highlights 18 landmarks including places of worship, 13 old shops and 18 types of food including both Muslim-friendly and non-halal options. “The map is designed to be a walking guide where visitors can explore on their own. It includes a suggested itinerary for a day trip, although a half-day visit is sufficient,” said Lee. “PJ Old Town is accessible by public transport. Visitors can stop at Taman Jaya or Asia Jaya LRT stations, then board either the PJ01 or T640 bus for the PJ Old Town Bus Terminal.” A must-visit destination when in the old quarters of Petaling Jaya is Medan Selera Jalan Othman, which was established in 1960. Besides the food court, the old and popular Pasar Besar Jalan Othman is also listed on the map. Other decades-old notable landmarks are Assunta Hospital (established in 1954), Church of The Assumption (built in 1959), Sri Sithi Vinayagar Temple better known as Petaling Jaya Pillaiyar Temple with its Dravidian architecture (built in 1964), Kwan Inn Teng Temple (founded in 1952) and Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Aziz (started off as a surau in 1956, then a mosque in 1964) which is the first mosque in Section 1. According to the guide, the site of Terminal Bas Jalan Othman Petaling Jaya was initially used by visiting circuses in the 1950s before the building came about. The original bus terminal building, which was popular among commuters in the 1970s to 1990s, made way in 2015 for the construction of a modern two-storey facility completed three years later. Built at a cost of RM3.19mil, the bus terminal was an initiative by Transport Ministry and Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ). Sri Sithi Vinayagar Temple, a prominent landmark along Jalan Selangor. From vision to reality The map was launched at a Mid-Autumn Festival event jointly organised by Lee and Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran’s offices in September. Lee said it took his team six months to work on the project, through research, dialogue sessions with resident groups and interviews with business operators in the old town. “PJ Old Town has a rich history as it served as the first administrative centre in Petaling Jaya. It was also an important economic and social hub. “We included bits of interesting information as fun facts in the map, such as the biggest roundabout in Petaling Jaya (which was demolished) and origins of the names Jalan Templer and Jalan Othman. “We also engaged a local illustrator to draw the map. A core team of five people worked on the project, with the project costing less than RM20,000,” he said, adding with a laugh that his team tried every dish and visited dining spots mentioned in the map to ensure they were worth recommending. The first print run of the map features 7,000 copies in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin. Lee described the map as a “living document”, as his team would improve on it from time to time, with future plans to translate it into Tamil and other languages. While most places listed in the map are accessible on foot, Lee acknowledged that more needed to be done to make Petaling Jaya Old Town suitable for walking. To make the area more inclusive, MBPJ upgraded Section 1’s commercial area to include disabled-friendly facilities such as ramps. Medan Selera Jalan Othman has been around since 1960. Lee is hoping that the map project encourages people to visit the area and patronise businesses there – be it discovering old shops with their unique trades or the local food. For example, Pat Seong Wine Merchant and Sang Hup Hardware and Sons, which have both been around since 1954, are touted as the oldest shops in Petaling Jaya. Then there is Brother Lim Cushion, which specialises in repair and customisation of sofa and car seat cushions and has been in the old town since 1972. Auntie Peggy’s Classic ais kacang and cendol, Kavitha Banana Leaf, Traditional Hakka Lui Char Restaurant and Nasi Lemak Goreng Chef Fauzey are among the well-known eateries listed. Lee is open to the idea of future collaborations, such as a photo exhibition featuring old snaps of Petaling Jaya Old Town or in-depth walking tours led by experienced guides. Traditional Hakka Lui Char Restaurant specialises in Hakka lei cha – a vegetarian rice dish topped with loads of herbs and green, and savoured with herbal broth. “I feel very welcomed since opening my office here. The senior folks enjoy sharing and chatting about their experiences, and life here resembles the harmonious fabric of Malaysia. “PJ Old Town has reached a crossroad. It is an ageing neighbourhood, so there is a need to develop it in a sustainable manner to retain its traditional charm while attracting young people to come here. “There is also a need to look into better care and having engaging programmes for the many senior folk living here.” Physical copies of the map are available at Lee’s office in Section 1, Rajiv’s office in Petaling Jaya New Town, Jalan Othman Petaling Jaya Bus Terminal as well as at these restaurants – Tingkap Cafe in Section 1, Kanna Curry House in Section 17 and New Ipoh Chicken Rice in Jalan Gasing. The digital version is available at pjlestari.com/cultural-map/ 'CLICK TO ENLARGE' Walking tour Lee, a first-term MP and former assemblyman from Pahang, personally led a group on a half-day walk in mid-October to visit several places mentioned in the PJ Old Town Cultural and Food Map. For Heidi Khalisah Azwari, the walking tour allowed her to gain insight and rediscover old places she used to frequent during her childhood years. “I grew up at my grandmother’s house in Taman Medan and studied at SK Assunta 2,” said Heidi Khalisah, 20, who is now studying at a private university in Raub, Pahang. “I got the opportunity to appreciate the buildings I used to walk past. “It is also nice to know the eateries I frequented are still around.” She said she used to eat satay at Medan Selera Jalan Othman, nasi lemak with ayam goreng at Nasi Lemak Goreng Chef Fauzey and enjoyed celebratory treats at McDonald’s when she did well at school. Petaling Jaya Community Library has a small exhibition area with artefacts curated by Petaling Jaya Museum. Heidi Khalisah added that the Petaling Jaya Community Library was where she would study for her exams and hang out with friends. Pong Siew Chu, 62, said the walking tour offered new insight into her neighbourhood, even after having lived in Section 1 for 40 years. Her husband, Wong Chong Tow, is the Section 1B Rukun Tetangga treasurer. “It was the first time I entered the premises of several places of worship,” said Pong who did the half-day walk with her son, Wong Jun Zhi, 22. “I am keen on renewing my membership at PJ Community Library after learning of its newer facilities. “It has a play area with books and activities for children aged up to seven years, so I can take my two grandsons, aged two years and five months, there when they come for a visit.” Kompleks Rakan Muda Arena Petaling Jaya is a sports complex located along Jalan Selangor. Pong said she has patronised a number of shops and eateries listed in the map, and goes to Pasar Besar Jalan Othman to do her daily marketing. “I hope the map helps draw in more visitors to the Section 1 neighbourhood and revive businesses here. “Perhaps Lee or a relevant authority could consider having murals on walls to add an artistic element to PJ Old Town, similar to the ‘Little Children on a Bicycle’ mural in George Town, Penang,” she added. Pong said she would also promote the map to her neighbours and students attending the daycare service she operates.

Downing Street condemned Mr Putin for further escalating the conflict by using a ballistic missile with a range of “several thousand kilometres” against the city of Dnipro. Mr Putin suggested the missile could be used to hit Kyiv’s allies who have given Ukraine permission to use Western-supplied weapons to hit targets within Russia. The UK is believed to have allowed its Storm Shadow missiles to be used by Ukrainian forces within the Kursk region of Russia, while the US has given permission for its ATACMS weapons to be fired at targets in Mr Putin’s country. Mr Putin confirmed Russia has tested a new intermediate-range weapon, saying it came in response to Ukrainian strikes on the Russian territory with US and British missiles earlier this week. The Russian leader declared that Russia would issue advance warnings before strikes on other countries to allow civilians to evacuate to safety. “In response to the use of American and British long-range weapons on November 21 of this year, the Russian armed forces launched a combined strike on one of the facilities of the Ukrainian defence industry,” Mr Putin said in a televised address. “One of the newest Russian medium-range missile systems was tested in combat conditions, in this case, with a ballistic missile in a non-nuclear hypersonic warhead.” He added: “We consider ourselves entitled to use our weapons against military facilities of those countries that allow their weapons to be used against our facilities.” The US said the weapon was a new, experimental intermediate-range missile based on Russia’s existing RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile. In Westminster, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “My understanding is that it is the first time that Russia has used a ballistic missile in Ukraine with a range of several thousand kilometres.” No 10 said it was “an example of escalatory behaviour from Russia”. But the Prime Minister’s spokesman added it “only serves to strengthen our resolve and to ensure that Ukraine has what it needs to act in self-defence against Russia’s reckless and illegal invasion”. Defence Secretary John Healey said: “Since the illegal invasion of Ukraine began, Russia has consistently and irresponsibly escalated the conflict while Ukraine continues to fight in self-defence for a democratic future. “Today’s ballistic missile attack is yet another example of Putin’s recklessness.” The missile’s range far outstrips that of newly authorised US and British supplied weapons. The distance from Moscow to London is around 2,500km, suggesting the range of the new missile could threaten the UK. Russia’s military claims it has shot down two British-made Storm Shadow missiles, following reports that debris from the weapons had been discovered in the country’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have launched an incursion. Mr Healey earlier revealed to a committee of MPs that the UK knew Russia had been “preparing for months” to fire a new ballistic missile. Mr Healey warned Ukraine faces a “serious moment” in its defence against Mr Putin’s invasion, but refused to confirm that Kyiv had been given permission to use Storm Shadow in Russia. Downing Street and the Ministry of Defence have repeatedly declined to comment publicly on the use of Storm Shadow. “It risks both operational security and in the end the only one that benefits from such a public debate is President Putin,” the Defence Secretary told MPs. Battle lines in Ukraine are now “less stable than at any time since the early days of the full-scale Russian invasion”, Mr Healey said, citing British intelligence. Speaking at the same time, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told the House of Commons the UK “will not be deterred or distracted by reckless threats” from Mr Putin, who has lowered the threshold for using his nuclear arsenal. Sir Keir also insisted that all the UK’s support for Kyiv was “in accordance with international law” and “always for self-defence”. Mr Zelensky said: “We discussed defence co-operation between Ukraine and the United Kingdom, focusing on developing and enhancing the technological capabilities of the armed forces of Ukraine. “Particular attention was given to Ukraine’s current military needs and the continued support from our partners.”

Paycor to Present at the UBS Global Technology and AI ConferenceHOUSTON — For a second straight season, the Houston Texans will be without Tank Dell to end the regular season and for the playoffs after the dynamic receiver suffered another major injury. Dell sustained what coach DeMeco Ryans called a “significant” knee injury on a 30-yard touchdown catch in Houston’s loss to Kansas City on Saturday. Though the team hasn’t officially ruled him out for the season, it seems unlikely that he will be able to return after he was hospitalized overnight following the injury. The AFC South champion Texans will have to regroup quickly with a visit from the Baltimore Ravens coming on Christmas Day. Dell’s injury is another blow to a team that was already missing Stefon Diggs after the four-time Pro Bowl receiver sustained a season-ending knee injury in Week 8. Dell ranks second on the team with 51 receptions for 667 yards and three touchdowns behind Nico Collins, who has 909 yards receiving and six scores. Tight end Dalton Schultz has 482 yards receiving and two touchdowns, and running back Joe Mixon 291 yards receiving and a touchdown grab. But with Dell and Diggs out, the Texans are thin at receiver. Houston is looking for its first win over Baltimore since 2014. The Ravens, meanwhile, are coming off a 34-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers that clinched a playoff spot and pulled them into a first-place tie with the Steelers in the AFC North. Quarterback Lamar Jackson threw touchdowns to three different players against the Steelers, and Derrick Henry ran for 162 yards. Of some concern is the secondary, which, despite a pick-6, allowed Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson to throw for 217 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Ravens showed much better discipline on defense in Saturday’s win. Baltimore was flagged only twice for 10 yards in the game: a couple of false starts on offense. “We covered better. They had a couple downfield throws that we defended without grabbing,” coach John Harbaugh said. “So I thought we did a good job.” Baltimore fumbled three times but was lucky to recover them all. Two of those miscues were by Desmond Kane, who appeared to have taken over the punt returning duties after a good performance the previous week but looked shaky against Pittsburgh. Baltimore’s running back depth took a hit when Justice Hill left the game because of a concussion. Rookie Rasheen Ali had 2 yards on his only carry. If the Ravens (10-5) win Wednesday, they can take the division outright by beating Cleveland in their regular-season finale coupled with the Steelers losing one of their final two games.

BO6 and Warzone players say Activision banning 20,000 Call of Duty cheaters doesn’t even scratch the surface. Cheaters and hackers have long infested Call of Duty games, hence Activision’s implementation of the Ricochet anti-cheat system. Of late, however, the problem has become increasingly worse, with the company even doubling down on cross-play in Ranked matches despite the ongoing concerns. And it’s not just everyday players demanding that Activision take action, either. Streamers have also aired their frustrations. After combatting streamer snipers, content creator Fifakill said it “feels like cheaters have more control of the game than devs rn.” BO6, Warzone fans dismiss Activision update on cheaters In a Call of Duty Updates post, Activision has addressed recent and future changes to the Ricochet anti-cheat system. For one, “several additional detections” were rolled out in the last week to fortify COD games. Such efforts have resulted in more than 20,000 account bans, all targeted for “engaging in boosting and cheating behavior” across Ranked Play in BO6 and Warzone . Call of Duty players are far from impressed with the stat, evidenced by responses to the update post. The CODmunity Twitter/X page pondered whether the 20,000 figure “isn’t just the tip of the iceberg. That number seems low considering we have cheaters in almost every game in all servers.” Another frustrated user called account banning “worthless,” given that hackers “just make new accounts within 30 minutes.” Someone else joked, “20k cheaters accounts banned? I bet all 20k of those cheaters are back with a new account already.” Other players in the thread argued the message from Activision reads hollow since similar communications go live every year while “the game stays the same.” Related: In 2025, Team Ricochet intends to implement an extra layer of server infrastructure that should temper long-running stability issues. Plus, further protections will come in the form of upgrades targeting server systems and the existing kernel driver.Consider this: It is now four decades ago that astronaut Owen Garriott, callsign W5LFL, pioneered amateur radio communication from space. He was a crewmember on the space shuttle program's STS-9 mission. During that space shuttle flight in 1983, Garriott became the first-ever person in space to communicate with amateur radio operators on the ground . He was also the first person to be heard directly from space by members of the public using simple radio receivers and scanners. That event transformed astronaut communications from space forever, allowing amateur radio operators and the public to communicate with people in space. But don't change that dial! Much more is coming in terms of amateur radio and the International Space Station . Strong signal strength The Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation, or AMSAT in short wave sign language, is a worldwide group of Amateur Radio Operators dubbed as "Hams." AMSAT itself was formed in 1969 as an educational organization. For decades the organization has emitted strong signal strength to emphasize that status. For decades, AMSAT groups have had far-reaching, positive effects on the future of both amateur radio, as well as other governmental, scientific and commercial activities in terms of the final frontier. Home brew AMSAT's ongoing achievements in space research and communication were kick-started by efforts surrounding the 1961 launch of Project OSCAR - the Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio. A U.S.-based group on the west coast built the very first amateur radio satellite, the 10-pound "home brew" OSCAR-1, assembled in a garage in Los Altos, California. OSCAR-1 was lofted on Dec. 12, 1961 as a secondary payload as "ballast" on a U.S. spy satellite launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. OSCAR-1 made its ascension into Earth orbit a scant four years after the liftoff of the former Soviet Union's first Sputnik in October 1957. Radio spectrum "Since then, two groups — Project OSCAR and AMSAT — have launched more than 30 spacecraft designed and built by radio amateurs. The OSCAR number is now over 100 satellites but most of these have been university satellites who wanted to use amateur radio spectrum and wanted to support the notion of satellite for use by radio amateurs," said Jan King, a founding member of AMSAT. "Amateur radio has launched and operated more satellites than most countries have," King told Space.com. But for boosted signal strength, enter the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS). The ARISS program was created and is managed by an international consortium of amateur radio organizations and space agencies including NASA, Russia's Roscosmos, the Canadian Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and the European Space Agency. Educational connections Frank Bauer, also known as KA3HDO in callsign lingo, is ARISS-USA Executive Director and serves as international chair of the group. "We are performing 60-100 'educational connections' with astronauts and cosmonauts on ISS a year," Bauer told Space.com. Educational connections are astronaut on-board contacts in formal and informal educational settings. These can include formal schools, virtual or home schools, scouts, boys and girls clubs, libraries, etc., Bauer explained. To date, ARISS has performed about 1,700 connections with ISS astronauts, an initiative that began just a few weeks after the first crew came onboard the orbiting outpost, he said. Over that period of time, ARISS has chalked up several milestones. On Nov. 13 of this year, the group celebrated 24 years of continuous operations and on Dec. 21 they flag the 24th anniversary of their first ISS school contact. "Our connections, over the years, have engaged between 40,000 and 200,000 youth per year," Bauer said. "We were the first operational educational payload on the ISS." New milestones In the next few years, ARISS is scoping out new milestones the group would like to achieve. For one, there's an ARISS 2.0 initiative, a new education vision for the future and one that is multi-pronged. To that end, that strategy involves: Developing and deploying engaging education projects and lesson plans; Extending low Earth orbit (LEO) space-reach to include multiple commercial space stations as well as activities on ISS; Extending educational activities beyond LEO into deep space via lunar orbiters and landers, including NASA's projected Lunar Gateway; Supporting science/technology projects that employ ARISS capabilities and/or enhance science via radio techniques. Projects underway There have been a series of partnerships, grants and other ARISS team activities that are keyed to education, spaceflight hardware development and spaceflight operations. Bauer pointed to projects underway, such as SPARKI (Space Pioneers Amateur Radio Kit Initiative) Radio Kit, which is currently operational via a grant from Amateur Radio Digital Communications (ARDC), a California-based foundation with roots in amateur radio and the technology of internet communication. Also there are partnerships with the private space group Axiom and NASA, Bauer added, "where we have supported all three Axiom mission crews." Also there's the ARISS STAR (Space Telerobotics Using Amateur Radio), in development, as well as Student Mission Control, also in development, said Bauer. Blue-sky to the moon How about any blue-sky thoughts on future ARISS endeavors that might tie into NASA Artemis moon base contact with future crews? Bauer responded saying that the ARISS Amateur Radio Exploration (AREx) program has been developing systems to be deployed on crewed and uncrewed missions to the moon. "Their purpose is to inspire, engage and educate youth and lifelong learners in STEAM/STEM activities and encourage them to pursue STEAM/STEM careers," said Bauer. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts , and mathematics. Achievable goal "We have a fairly mature hardware prototype of a system called CAVIAR (Communications, Audio, Video, Imaging using Amateur Radio), which will allow youth to actively immerse themselves in lunar exploration in the lunar environment," Bauer added. "This includes communications with astronauts during the exploration activities as well as the ability to capture pictures and video directly, similar to what we have accomplished on ISS. Lunar communications, ala ARISS is achievable," concluded Bauer. For contact with ARISS, visit their official website .

Adcetera's creative partnership with Roborock sends the S8 MaxV Ultra into space HOUSTON, Dec. 23, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Adcetera, a Houston-based digital marketing agency, announces the launch of a historic video campaign in partnership with Roborock , one of the world's leading robot vacuum brands. The campaign, centered around the theme "Beyond Limits," culminated in the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra being launched 120,000 feet above the Earth, making it the first robot vacuum in space. When Roborock began searching for an agency to develop a video campaign around their hashtag, #BeyondLimits, Adcetera's creatives stepped in to develop a narrative that could bring those two words to life. The resulting social media campaign features three scientists frustrated by outdated cleaning tools. Their solution? Invent the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra. After putting the vacuum through a series of "Beyond Limits" tests, the scientists take it one step further and launch it into space. The collaboration included partnering with Sent into Space, a UK-based company specializing in sending objects into the upper stratosphere. On September 17, 2024, the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra successfully launched from Sheffield, UK, reaching 120,000 feet above Earth and enduring extreme temperatures, thus proving the product's endurance and innovation.
