Unai Emery feels confidence returning after Aston Villa end winless run
Cruise lovers have spoken, and the world’s best cruise has been named as a colossal ship with all the amenities for a one-of-a-kind experience. Conde Nast Traveller has published its annual cruise line ranking for 2024 following a vote among readers. And it turns out, MSC Cruises took the top spot in the ‘Mega ships’ category, with an impressive score of 90 out of 100. Their massive ship, MSC Virtuosa, boasts everything a family could need to make their holiday an unforgettable experience. From intricate water parks to multiple pools, including the Atmosphere Pool, which is one of the largest at sea, to a 4D cinema, a comedy club, and a karaoke bar. It also boasts many family-friendly activities, including a LEGO-themed kids club, a sports complex for basketball and football tournaments, and family cabins. Not to mention the fully-equipped games arcade with all the latest technology, including a VR maze, bowling lanes, and F1 simulators. The MSC Virtuosa also has a humanoid robot bartender named Rob who works in the Starship Club mixing drinks and conversing in eight languages. Tripadvisor reviews seem to support the ranking, with five-star reviews from passengers highlighting the “second-to-none” service. Angelallan2020 said: “This was a superb two-week cruise. [I] was so sad it ended as we had a glorious two-week holiday on the Virtuosa. The ship is so glamorous and modern.” Becky Allen Holland added: “I have been on my first-ever cruise to Europe to Rotterdam in Holland and in Cork in Ireland on MSC Virtuosa. “What an amazing experience! The MSC Virtuosa cruise crew did an excellent looking after me and my Mum and Dad while onboard the cruise were nothing but lovely, hardworking and helpful.” Monnie334 wrote: “What a brilliant experience! We could not fault the ship, and the crew/staff were nothing but lovely, hardworking and helpful. Our cabin attendant and two waiters in the main dining room couldn't do enough for us.” The best cruise lines in the world 2024 4. Royal Caribbean. Score 78.80 3. Carnival Cruise Line. Score 83.40 2. Qatar tribune Agencies Kuwait His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah on Saturday inaugurated the 26th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup Football Championship at the Jaber Al Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait City before Kuwait met Oman in the opening match. The ceremony was attended by a number of dignitaries from Kuwait and the Gulf region including Qatar Olympic Committee President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamaad Al Thani. The event featured a spectacular opening ceremony that showcased artistic performances reflecting both the Gulf heritage of the past and the vision for the future. The ceremony began with an inspiring speech by the tournament sponsor, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, followed by the national anthem of Kuwait. Throughout the opening ceremony, the lives of the people of Kuwait and other Gulf countries were depicted, focusing on their historical relationship with the sea, which served as a source of livelihood for previous generations. Desert life, symbolized by the camel, was also highlighted in a captivating presentation that embraced the tournament’s slogan: “The Future is Gulf.” The event showcased stunning artistic displays that represented the ancient heritage of the Arab Gulf countries, infused with modern artistic elements that conveyed a unified Gulf vision for a bright future. Notably, Gulf boats were featured, symbolizing the region’s present and future. The ceremony merged traditional Gulf folk arts with modern technology, engagingly presenting a common Gulf identity. Kuwaiti artist Bashar Al Shatti and Saudi artist Ayed performed a beautiful artistic operetta set against vibrant backgrounds featuring the championship cup, coffee pot, and incense burner. The event conveyed powerful messages through visual displays that illustrated the unity of the Gulf’s destiny and the shared vision connecting the region’s peoples under one banner. It concluded with a stunning fireworks display that captivated the audience. After 25 glorious tournaments since its inauguration in 1970, the eight national teams of hosts Kuwait, reigning champions Iraq, along with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Yemen and Oman, are all expecting to make an impact from December 21-January 3. Hosts Kuwait have won the tournament an incredible 10 times, but have not lifted the coveted trophy since 1990. Formerly known as the Arabian Gulf Cup, the tournament has been renamed the Khaleeji Zain 26 following a sponsorship agreement signed with the leading technology and digital lifestyle company, Zain, prior to the 25th edition held in Basra two years ago. The first tournament featured four teams – Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and the eventual champions Kuwait, and, with the event is organised every two years, four more teams were added over the decades with the UAE in 1972, Oman in 1974, Iraq in 1976, and, finally, Yemen in 2003. Only Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar have featured at every edition of the tournament since inception, with the trio making their 26th appearances in Kuwait from December 21 to January 3. While Kuwait’s 10 titles place them well ahead as the most successful nation, Iraq have won it on four occasions, while Saudi Arabia and Qatar have won it three times each. The UAE and Oman have won it twice, Bahrain have one trophy to their name while Yemen are aiming to make it out of the group stage for the first time in Kuwait this year. Kuwait have hosted the Khaleeji Zain on four previous occasions, the last time coming in 2017/18, and they have won it twice as hosts in 1974 and 1990, the last time they lifted the trophy. The tournament is organised by the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation (AGCFF) in co-ordination with the host nation with a total of 15 matches to be held across the impressive 60,000-capacity Jaber Al Ahmad International Stadium and the 15,000-capacity Jaber Al Jaber Al Mubarak Al Sabah Stadium. Some of the best Arab players of all time have featured at the tournament, with the all-time top-scorer being Kuwait’s legend Jasem Yaqoub who has scored 18 goals, closely followed by Saudi Arabia’s Majed Abdullah and Iraq’s Hussein Saeed who have scored 17 goals each. Saeed scored an incredible 10 goals at the 1979 tournament, the most by a golden boot winner. Copy 22/12/2024 10
By MEAD GRUVER and AMY BETH HANSON, Associated Press A judge on Monday rejected a request to block a San Jose State women’s volleyball team member from playing in a conference tournament on grounds that she is transgender. Monday’s ruling by U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews in Denver will allow the player, who has played all season, to continue competing in the Mountain West Conference women’s championship scheduled for later this week in Las Vegas. The ruling comes after a lawsuit was filed by nine current players who are suing the Mountain West Conference to challenge the league’s policies for allowing transgender players to participate. The players argued that letting her compete was a safety risk and unfair. While some media have reported those and other details, neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans women’s volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player’s name because she has not publicly commented on her gender identity. School officials also have declined an interview request with the player. Judge Crews referred to the athlete as an “alleged transgender” player in his ruling and noted that no defendant disputed that San Jose State rosters a transgender woman volleyball player. He said the players who filed the complaint could have sought relief much earlier, noting that the individual universities had acknowledged that not playing their games against San Jose State this season would result in a forfeit in league standings. He also said injunctions are meant to preserve the status quo. The conference policy regarding forfeiting for refusing to play against a team with a transgender player had been in effect since 2022 and the San Jose State player has been on the roster since 2022 – making that the status quo. The player competed at the college level three previous seasons, including two for San Jose State, drawing little attention. This season’s awareness of her identity led to an uproar among some players, pundits, parents and politicians in a political campaign year. The tournament starts Wednesday and continues Friday and Saturday. San Jose State is seeded second. The judge’s order maintains the seedings and pairings for the tournament. Several teams refused to play against San Jose State during the season, earning losses in the official standings. Boise State and Wyoming each had two forfeits while Utah State and Nevada both had one. Southern Utah, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, was first to cancel against San Jose State this year. Nevada’s players stated they “refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes,” without providing further details. Crews served as a magistrate judge in Colorado’s U.S. District Court for more than five years before President Joe Biden appointed him to serve as a federal judge in January of this year. Gruver reported from Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Hanson from Helena, Montana.

Unai Emery felt his Aston Villa side restored confidence by returning to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Brentford in the Premier League. Morgan Rogers’ fourth goal of the season, an Ollie Watkins penalty and Matty Cash’s finish put Villa 3-0 up after 34 minutes. Mikkel Damsgaard pulled one back for Brentford in the second half but the damage had been done as Villa ended their eight-match winless run in all competitions. Emery was relieved to end the unwanted streak but quickly turned his attention to the next fixture against Southampton on Saturday. “We broke a spell of bad results we were having,” the Villa boss said. “We started the first five or 10 minutes not in control of the game but then progressively we controlled. “Today we achieved those three points and it has given us confidence again but even like that it’s not enough. We have to keep going and think about the next match against Southampton on Saturday. “The message was try to focus on each match, try to forget the table. How we can recover confidence and feel comfortable at home. Today was a fantastic match.” Tyrone Mings returned to the starting line-up in the Premier League for the first time since August 2023. Emery admitted it has been a long road back for the 31-year-old and is pleased to have him back. He added: “Mings played in the Champions league but it’s the first time in the league for a year and three months. “I think he played fantastic – he might be tired tomorrow but will be ready for Saturday again. “It was very, very long, the injury he had. His comeback is fantastic for him and everybody, for the doctor and physio and now he’s training everyday.” Brentford fell to a sixth away defeat from seven games and have picked up only a solitary point on the road this season. They have the best home record in the league, with 19 points from seven matches, but they have the joint worst away record. Bees boss Thomas Frank is confident form will improve on the road. He said: “On numbers we can’t argue we are better at home than away, but on numbers it’s a coincidence. I think two of the seven away games have been bad. “The other games we performed well in big spells. I’m confident at the end of the season we will have some wins away from home.” Frank felt Villa should not have been given a penalty when Ethan Pinnock brought Watkins down. He added: “I want to argue the penalty. I don’t think it is (one). I think Ollie kicked back and hit Ethan, yes there is an arm on the shoulder but threshold and all that – but that’s not the reason we lost.”
