As usual, a lot of handwringing and total lack of answers produce a sort of techno-manga doomscape. Those headlines create a bizarre set of situations from “ AI is an existential threat to colleges” from the Washington Post (paywall) to the truly alarming penalizing of a student for proofreading using Grammarly. The AI outscores the humans relentlessly at about 83%, according to Forbes . As usual, honesty gets you nowhere. See that quaint little rustic waste of time called the USA for details. Strangely, people aren’t happy with this 100% true-to-Western-cultural breakthrough into institutional incompetence and corruption. Despite the decades of noble roles of mainstream media and so many utterly futile public figures, people who can’t do their jobs aren’t much in demand. “Why not?” you enquire, grimly bolting yourself to the ridiculous shriveled lettuce of a society. Well, ‘cause: Education has become a stagnant backwater of regressive politics. They’re either scared of it or actively trying to prevent it. See Oklahoma for details. Defunding public education is actually a stated policy in the USA. If they seriously think everyone can afford private education, you can see the level of intellect in the mix. Past idiocies sabotaged education decades ago. The blame isn’t all one-way. Imbecile ideas like not teaching phonics (structuring basic words and concepts) did a lot of damage. Many people in multiple generations are functionally illiterate. The illiteracy of the system itself doesn’t exactly help in managing AI issues. Literacy isn’t just being able to read. It’s being able to understand what you read. It’s essential to critical thinking, of which we have so little lately. The future isn’t looking at all good for the skills bases required to manage new tech and things like human reality. Let’s get down to basics: 1, AI cannot replace humans. If you replace people with AI, you have to check absolutely everything. It’s actually more work. 2, AI doesn’t give you actual skills. You still need to learn and understand to know your stuff. Your overpriced education is utterly meaningless and useless if you can’t do the jobs. 3. It’s pretty easy to prove who can really do a job and who can’t. All you need is a simple competence test. See if the useless smug little brats can function. 4, Force AI providers to include AI detection capacity in their products by law. This “free lunch for fakes” stuff has to stop somewhere. Bear in mind that the present capacity is nothing like up to this task. According to the Forbes article above, the current 6% detection rate of AI is an overestimate. (Might help with scientific fraud and deranged social media bots, too.) This isn’t “artificial intelligence” yet. It’s “artificial idiocy”. APPLE is working with Broadcom to develop its first server chip specially designed for artificial intelligence (AI) processing, the Information reported on Wednesday (Dec 11), citing sources with direct knowledge of the matter. The reported move would align the iPhone maker with other big technology companies that have developed their own chips to power compute-heavy AI services and reduce reliance on Nvidia’s pricey and short-in-supply processors. Apple’s AI chip is internally code-named Baltra and is expected to be ready for mass production by 2026, the report said. To make the chip, the company is planning to use one of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s most advanced manufacturing processes, known as N3P, the report said. Apple and Broadcom did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. Broadcom shares rose 5 per cent after the news. Last year, Apple had signed a multi-billion dollar deal with the chipmaker to develop 5G radio frequency components. Apple had said at its annual developer conference in June that it plans to use its own server chips to help power AI features on its devices. The company has had success in recent years in developing in-house chips for its devices, including the M-series of processors that replaced Intel chips in its Mac laptops. Still, some big tech companies have found it hard to cut reliance on Nvidia despite in-house efforts, barring Google, which also works with Broadcom for its AI chips. The push by big cloud providers to diversify their supply chains has turned Broadcom into one of the biggest beneficiaries of the generative AI boom. Its shares have gained 54 per cent in 2024, after almost doubling in value last year. Broadcom’s central competitor in this space is Marvell. The total market for custom chips could grow to about US$45 billion by 2028 and be split between the two companies, Marvell chief operations officer Chris Koopmans said earlier this month. REUTERS

Nebraska looks to stretch its season-long winning streak to five games when it hosts Southern on Monday night in Lincoln. The streak began after Michigan State crushed the Cornhuskers 89-52 in Nebraska's Big Ten opener on Dec. 7. Nebraska started the winning streak with an 85-68 home victory over Indiana to even its conference record at 1-1. Then the Cornhuskers (10-2) swept their way through the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, beating Murray State, host Hawaii and lastly Oregon State on Christmas Day to win the tournament championship. Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg was pleased with the three double-digit victories in Hawaii, including the 78-66 win over the Beavers to earn the title. "The importance of winning three games against three quality teams, that's going to be help us down the road," Hoiberg said. Brice Williams scored 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting against Oregon State to cap a run that ended with earning tournament MVP. Williams tallied 32 points in the semifinal victory over Hawaii. He averaged 22 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in the tournament. Williams controlled the pace in the finale. "I was aggressive and wanted to let my defense lead my offense," Williams said. "I came out pretty hot and my team took it from there." Williams leads the Cornhuskers with a 19.7 scoring average. The San Diego Rescue Mission will host its annual Thanksgiving Community Outreach Meal Saturday, providing holiday food for San Diegans without a home or in unstable living conditions. The event, running from 1 to 3 p.m., will feature “a traditional roast turkey dinner with all the holiday trimmings,” for low-income San Diegans. “Thanksgiving is more than a meal; it’s a time to restore hope and community for those in need,” said Donnie Dee, president and CEO of the San Diego Rescue Mission. “At the San Diego Rescue Mission, we don’t just fill plates — we aim to fill hearts with dignity, compassion, and a renewed sense of purpose.” The organization will also offer attendees haircuts and hot showers through its mobile shower trailers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rescue Mission. The proposed auto-enrolment pensions plan has been labelled a "waste of resources" by a former actuary. The Department of Social Protection' retirement savings scheme for employees is set to be implemented on September 30th next year. Under auto- enrolment , all employed workers who are not already in a pension scheme will be automa tically enrolled in the new national scheme. Employees, employers and the State will all pay a certain amount into an employee's pension fund. A new public body - the National Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings Authority - will oversee the administration of the new scheme. Employees can opt out of the scheme after six months if they wish. Former actuary and past president of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland Colm Fagan, however, has described the pensions plan as a "waste of resources". On The Pat Kenny Show , Mr Fagan claimed two aspects of the plan would be very costly to the State. "One is the total contributions being paid by employees, employers and the State," he said. "That would be €20 billion in the first 10 years of the scheme and then it would be €4 billion a year after that." "It’s incomprehensible that they’ve agreed to go into this without any consideration of whether they’re getting good value for money ." Mr Fagan said Ireland's auto-enrolment plan is modelled off the UK's National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) scheme. "I n the NEST scheme, there is between a quarter and a third of the people who leave every year. "If we have the same experience as the NEST scheme, of the 80 0,000 people who join, only 30,000 of them will still be there after 10 years." Mr Fagan is calling for the Economic Social Research Institute (ESRI) to assess Ireland's proposed auto-enrolment scheme before it is enacted next year. "All I'm saying is we should have the ESRI go through it with a fine-tooth comb," he said. FBI warns to stop sending texts; here's what to do instead

South Korea’s previous defense minister was stopped from attempting suicide while in detention over last week’s martial law declaration, officials said Wednesday, as President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office resisted a police attempt to search the compound. The main liberal opposition Democratic Party is pushing for a new motion to impeach Yoon for his Dec. 3 decree that imposed martial law in South Korea for the first time in more than four decades. Its first impeachment attempt against Yoon last Saturday failed after ruling party lawmakers boycotted the vote. The party said it plans to submit the new motion on Thursday to set up a vote on Saturday. Yoon’s ill-conceived power grab has paralyzed South Korean politics, frozen its foreign policy and rattled financial markets. On Wednesday, rival North Korea’s state media for the first time reported about the turmoil across the border, but the country hasn’t shown any suspicious activities. Shin Yong Hae, commissioner general of the Korea Correctional Service, told lawmakers that former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun tried to kill himself the previous night at a detention center in Seoul. He said correctional officers stopped him and that he was in stable condition. Kim was arrested by prosecutors early Wednesday on allegations of playing a key role in a rebellion and committing abuse of power. He became the first person formally arrested over the martial law decree. Kim, one of Yoon’s close associates, has been accused of recommending martial law to Yoon and sending troops to the National Assembly to block lawmakers from voting on it. Enough lawmakers eventually managed to enter a parliament chamber and they unanimously rejected Yoon’s decree, forcing the Cabinet to lift it before daybreak on Dec. 4. Kim said in a statement on Tuesday that he “deeply apologizes for causing significant anxiety” to the public. He said all responsibility for the martial law imposition rests with him and pleaded for leniency for soldiers deployed to enforce it. Prosecutors have up to 20 days to determine whether to indict Kim. Later Wednesday, police detained National Police Agency Commissioner General Cho Ji Ho and Kim Bong-sik, head of Seoul’s metropolitan police. They were accused of deploying police forces to parliament to block lawmakers from voting. The main focus of the investigation is finding whether Yoon, Kim and others involved in imposing martial law committed rebellion. A conviction for rebellion carries a maximum penalty of death. South Korean police said they sent officers to search Yoon’s office on Wednesday to look for any evidence related to the martial law introduction. But investigators failed to enter the office as of Wednesday evening, about six hours after their arrival, senior police officer Lee Ho-young told the parliament. Some observers earlier said that the presidential security service won’t likely permit searches of Yoon’s office, citing a law that prohibits searches of sites with state secrets without approval from those in charge of those areas. Yoon on Saturday apologized over the martial law decree, saying that he won’t avoid legal or political responsibility for it. He said he would leave it to his party to chart a course through the country’s political turmoil, “including matters related to my term in office.” The leader of Yoon’s ruling party later vowed to arrange the president’s stable exit from office, saying the party will coordinate with Cabinet members over state affairs and that Yoon will be sidelined from duties. The comments were criticized as unrealistic and unconstitutional, and caused widespread questions about who is in charge of South Korea and its military at a time of heightened tensions with North Korea. The Justice Ministry on Tuesday banned Yoon from leaving the country as he faces investigations. Vice Defense Minister Kim Seon Ho reiterated Wednesday that Yoon remains in charge of the military. But Yoon hasn’t been involved in any major official activities since lifting martial law, except for accepting resignation offers by officials involved in the martial law case and appointing the head for the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. A Wednesday article from the North’s state news agency reported about the South Korean political chaos and protests triggered by Yoon’s martial law decree. The report mostly attempted to explain the South Korean events, though it called Yoon “a traitor” and his military “gangsters.” Many experts say North Korea is sensitive to the domestic spread of news on major anti-government protests in foreign countries, because its own people have no official access to international news and could be affected by such events. The U.S. State Department said Monday that the U.S.-South Korean alliance remains “iron-clad” and that Washington is committed to the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula. In his martial law announcement, the conservative Yoon stressed a need to rebuild the country by eliminating “shameless North Korea followers and anti-state forces,” a reference to his liberal rivals who control parliament. Since taking office in 2022, Yoon has had near-constant friction with the Democratic Party, which introduced motions to impeach some of his top officials and launched a political offensive over scandals involving Yoon and his wife. Opposition parties and many experts say the martial law decree was unconstitutional. They say a president is by law allowed to declare martial law only during wartime or similar emergency situations, but South Korea wasn’t in such a predicament. They argue that deploying troops to seal the National Assembly to suspend its political activities amounted to rebellion because the constitution doesn’t allow a president to use the military to suspend parliament in any situation. If Yoon is impeached, his presidential powers would be suspended until the Constitutional Court decides whether to restore his powers or remove him from office. If he is dismissed from office, a new presidential election would be required.This comes weeks after Newsom and his administration passed new refinery and carbon credit regulations that will add up to $1.15 per gallon of gasoline and require Californians with gasoline-powered cars to earn up to another $1,000 per year in pretax income to afford. “We will intervene if the Trump Administration eliminates the federal tax credit, doubling down on our commitment to clean air and green jobs in California,” said Newsom in a statement. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose rocket launches were recently blocked by a California regulatory board that cited his personal politics, shared his disapproval on his social media platform, X, after Newsom staff told Bloomberg that Tesla models would not qualify for California rebates. “Even though Tesla is the only company who manufactures their EVs in California,” said Musk. “This is insane.” Musk recently moved SpaceX and X out of California, citing a new law signed by Newsom banning parental notification for gender change requests from K-12 students. The credits would be paid for through California’s cap-and-trade program, which requires carbon emitters to purchase credits from the state — costs which are generally passed on to consumers in the form of more expensive gasoline, energy, and even concrete. Emitters buy a few billion dollars worth of credits from California each year, with the state’s $135 billion high speed rail project getting the lion’s share of the revenue. The California Resources Board — all but two of whose voting members are appointed by the governor — recently approved $105 billion in EV charging credits and $8 billion in hydrogen charging credits to be largely paid for by drivers of gas cars and diesel trucks. An investigation by The Center Square found the change was pushed by EV makers and the builders of EV charging systems. Buyers of EV chargers, who pay for the energy and own the charger, sign installation contracts that permanently give away their rights to government or other EV charging credits generated from fueling a vehicle with electrons instead of gasoline. These chargers are often bundled with the purchase of an EV, or covered entirely by utility or government rebates, meaning they are permanent, zero-or-low-cost revenue streams for the company collecting the credits.
