This marked the first time since South Korea’s transition to democracy in the late 1980s that the country’s head of state imposed martial law. In the wake of the turmoil, opposition lawmakers signed a petition for impeachment proceedings, which is set to be voted on in parliament on Saturday. Also on Thursday, Yoon accepted the resignation of his defence minister. Today, the FDA granted regulatory approval to vibegron (Gemtesa; Sumitomo Pharma America), a beta-3 (β ) andrenergic receptor agonist dosed once daily, for the treatment of men with overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms who are receiving pharmacological therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), according to a news release from Sumitomo Pharma America (SMPA). "The clinical data on once-daily vibegron demonstrated clear improvements in key OAB symptoms in patients also receiving pharmacological therapy for BPH, showcasing the potential of Gemtesa to offer patients a way to gain better control of their symptoms," Yumi Sat, chief development officer of SMPA, said in the news release. “We have the potential to give men living with this disease a life with fewer interruptions due to their OAB symptoms." Often mistaken as a natural aspect of aging, OAB symptoms can be associated with BPH, an increasingly prevalent condition in men as they age. Millions of men in the United States live with BPH, with up to 75% of them having clinical symptoms of OAB. Unfortunately, around 80% of OAB cases in men can go undiagnosed. The regulatory action is based on results of URO-901-3005, a phase 3 trial analyzing vibegron versus placebo over 24 weeks in around 1100 men with OAB symptoms receiving pharmacological therapy for BPH. In results announced in 2023, vibegron met both co-primary end points, including change from baseline in the average number of urination episodes per day and change from baseline in the average number of urgency episodes per day. Another end point indicated a reduction in instances of urgent urinary incontinence episodes (an unintentional loss of urine immediately after an urgent need to urinate) per day at 12 weeks. Adverse reactions included urinary tract infection and hypertension, with a 4.3% frequency of serious adverse events—a similar rate to the placebo arm (2.9%), according to the investigators. "Millions of patients suffer from OAB along with existing BPH. John Baffes of the World Bank and Xiaoli Etienne of the University of Idaho, U.S., report these findings on November 27, 2024, in the open-access journal PLOS ONE. Almost 10 billion people are expected to inhabit Earth by 2050, so agricultural production will become increasingly critical to feeding the growing population. Over the past six decades, much of the growth in food production has stemmed from technological advances, including the widespread development and use of better crop varieties. But some studies have suggested that the growth in production has leveled off, raising concerns about future food availability, especially in the low- and middle-income countries with the highest population growth. In the new study, the researchers developed standardized measures for production and yield for 144 crops, covering 98 percent of global agricultural land. These measures allow scientists and policymakers to compare agricultural productivity across different countries and regions. The researchers found that there has been no discernable slowdown in the global growth of crop yields during the last six decades -- any observed slowdown in specific crops, regions or countries has been offset by gains in others. Their findings show that yields grew annually at a rate equivalent to about 33 kg of wheat per hectare. While the study's findings are reassuring from a global food supply perspective, the researchers caution that sustainable food production and the affordability of food will continue to be challenges to global food security. They emphasize that these concerns are particularly relevant in the face of intensifying climate change and increased demand for food due to population and income growth. The authors add: "Utilizing a comprehensive caloric-based index of production and yield for 144 crops, covering 98% of global agricultural land and food output, this paper reveals that, on an aggregate level, global yield growth -- a vital indicator of agricultural productivity -- has not slowed over the past six decades. A complaint has been filed with the chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 43 others, accusing them of committing genocide and crimes against humanity during a Hefajat-e-Islam rally at Motijheel's Shapla Chattar on May 5, 2013. It was filed by Iffat Ara, the mother of Rehan Ahsan, a former student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) who was killed during the rally, said her lawyer, SM Tasmirul Islam. Besides the former PM, her defence adviser Tariq Ahmed Siddiqui, then home minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, leaders of Awami League and its alliance are named in the complaint. It also named top law enforcement officials including then Police IGP, Rab director general, and DMP commissioner who allegedly led the joint operation on that day. Tasmirul Islam told the media that Rehan was shot dead between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on May 5, 2013, near the Mohammedan Sporting Club, located next to Shapla Chattar. His body was later found in the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Rehan's family didn't even receive his autopsy report despite making several requests, he added. The main accusations in the complaint are genocide and crimes against humanity, he added. Speaking to the media, Iffat Ara, Rehan's mother, said, "For the past 11 years, I had truly given up hope that I would be able to stand up for this ever. But after the political change on August 5, I found the courage to file this case." At the time of his death, Rehan, 23, was a third-year student of the computer science and engineering department at the Buet.
