Ulrika Richardson, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Haiti, said that offering Haiti’s young people alternatives to gang life and strengthening local institutions are key for the French-speaking Caribbean nation to “reclaim its position as a symbol of hope.” The UN said Haiti is faced with a multifaceted crisis, including rising gang violence, political instability, the displacement of over 700,000 people, as well as widespread hunger. The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has reported a sharp increase in the recruitment of minors by armed gangs, with the number of child recruits rising by 70 per cent in the past year. “There has been a terrifying escalation of violence in certain parts of Haiti, which is tearing at the very fabric of society,” Richardson said. “There have been horrific massacres in the last three months of the year both in the capital Port-au-Prince, but also in near-by l’Artibonite. These brutal acts of dehumanisation will only deepen the collective trauma of the Haitian people,” she said. “We cannot ignore this reality. We must centre these horrific events in our response, urgently expanding mental health and psychosocial support programmes, and integrating them into our long-term plan for stability. “As the UN, we are committed to staying in Haiti to help the most vulnerable people through the current crisis,” Richardson added. Lee, the longtime East Bay congresswoman and stalwart of progressive politics, said late last week in a social media post that she will announce her decision in early January, noting the decision was “not one I take lightly.” In the meantime, Lee has held numerous private meetings with city officials about the issues affecting Oakland, from the ongoing budget crisis to homelessness to policing, two sources with direct knowledge of those conversations told this news organization. The policy “deep dive,” as a source not authorized to speak publicly put it, might offer reassurance to skeptics who worry that the retiring legislator, who has represented Oakland, Alameda, Berkeley and San Leandro in Congress since 1998, would struggle to adapt to running a city full-time. But the larger consequence of Lee’s decision-making timeline is that the run-up to the April 15 special election to has largely stalled. Most candidates are holding off until Lee makes a move. Hours after the formal start on Monday of the candidate filing period, which lasts until Jan. 17, only two people had scheduled appointments to pull papers for the office — and , a pair of fringe prospects who are unlikely to make a dent in the race. Loren Taylor, the runner-up in the 2022 mayoral election, said Monday he plans to pull papers in the coming days, noting in an interview that his desire to help Oakland grow as a city won’t be affected by whom he’s running against. The Vancouver Canucks may be without captain Quinn Hughes longer than initially expected. Both Hughes and Elias Pettersson are suffering from undisclosed injuries that forced both of them to miss Saturday’s game against the Seattle Kraken. that the belief is that neither injury is considered serious and that both Hughes and Pettersson will not be out long-term. That is certainly good news for the Canucks, but head coach Rick Tocchet painted a slightly different picture this afternoon. He told media that both Pettersson and Hughes will not join the team on their upcoming road trip to Calgary and Seattle. However, when he got into timelines, it appeared that Hughes is a bit further away than Petey. “They aren’t gonna make the trip. Petey is probably a week away... Quinn is probably week-to-week,” Tocchet said. Pettersson being a week away from returning to action would put him in line to miss at least the next three Canucks games, including the two-game road trip and Friday’s game against the Nashville Predators. The more concerning part is Tocchet listing Hughes as being week-t0-week, making it possible he could miss more than a week of action. Hughes is the heartbeat of this Vancouver squad and the undisputed leader of the defensive corps. Having him out of the lineup for an extended period will have a profound effect on this team on and off the ice. Add that to the fact that the Canucks are already missing Filip Hronek due to injury and all of a sudden, the blueline is looking rather thin. Though, this is a group who should be used to playing without their star players with both Thatcher Demko and J.T. Miller being out for long stretches this season. It’s not clear what kind of injuries Pettersson and Hughes are suffering from. The team has not provided any clear picture of the nature of either injury, but there are some theories. Pettersson took a spill into the end-boards against the San Jose Sharks before the holiday break and appeared to hit his shoulder at an awkward angle while Hughes is reportedly fighting through something affecting his hand, .
