This is the Thursday, Dec. 12 edition of Food Crawl, the Star’s weekly food newsletter. . When it comes to stocking the fridge with non-alcoholic drinks during the holiday party season, consider some non-alcoholic wines and beers as a step up from the usual sodas and sparkling waters. I like how the bitter, tannin-rich flavour of alcohol cuts through rich and fatty holiday foods, and it’s a more grown-up and less sugary than hot chocolate, but after one regular beer or glass of wine, my face turns as red as Rudolph’s nose, and I’m ready for bed. Luckily, in recent years, the non-alcoholic beer and wine market has grown substantially — — as retailers and breweries are catching on that though not everyone drinks alcohol, people still want something special at a party. There are excellent options out there and here are four of my favourites. The brewery that helped kick-start also makes great non-alcoholic versions of its brews. Fans of hoppy, citrusy flavours should go for the brewery’s , $3.98 a can, but what I always liked about Bellwoods is its line of tart and ultra-fruity Jelly King beers. They remind me of a summery shandy, but because of its fruitiness, they’re also suitable for the holidays (I mean, what is fruit cake if not booze-soaked fruit?). Right now the non-alcoholic Jelly Kings come in flavours like the basic dry-hopped sour that has strong notes of peach, $4.42, and will go great with turkey dinner; a dry-hopped sour with tropical tasting mango, guava and passionfruit, $5.31, that pairs well with a brown sugar-glazed ham; and a dry-hopped sour with raspberry and blackberry, $5.31, perfect with cheese, charcuterie and dark chocolate desserts. Bellwoods Brewery has two bottle shops. One is at at Argyle Street and is open every day 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The other is at at Colville Road, near the Lawrence Avenue West and Caledonia Road southeast of Yorkdale Shopping Centre, and is open everyday noon to 7 p.m. There is also an . The Jack Pine from Harmon’s Craft Brewing. My beer-loving colleague recommended Harmon’s, a local non-alcoholic craft brewery launched in 2021 from the co-founder of Mill Street Brewery as well as its former brewmaster. The core lineup consists of a , a and the one I think is most fitting for the holidays, the Jack Pine, a slightly bubbly pale ale with notes of fresh pine needles, bittersweet hops and a hint of orange. It’s light enough to drink on its own like a sparkling water but it’s also versatile enough for anything from burgers and fries to the turkey dinner. Prices vary between stores, but I picked up individual cans at for $3.39 a pop, as well as a four-pack for $11.99 at . Harmon’s has an as well as a . Proxies’ Red Ember from Grape Witches. The west-end wine bar and bottle shop specializes that you’ll seldom, if ever, see at your local LCBO. While you can shop online, its worth popping into the stores to get specific recommendations from its staff, who make buying wines a breezy, non-intimidating experience. For non-alcoholic options, the Red Ember from , a company from Dundas, Ont., is best for drinking with heavier dishes like roasts and baked pastas. It’s not dealcoholized wine (regular wine with the alcohol boiled out of it), but rather a complex blend of juices and spices, such as Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, pomegranate juice, fermented ginger tea, black peppercorn, coffee and cayenne. It’s also gluten-free and plant-based. The resulting blend reminds me of prune, blueberry and pomegranate juices with very subtle spicy black pepper and a pleasant tannin that lingers on the tongue. Heads up: the bottles are sealed with a cork. Grape Witches has two locations:1247 Dundas St. W. at Skey Lane. The other is inside the Waterworks Food Hall at 15 Maud St. at Richmond Street West. The stores are open Sunday to Wednesday noon to 10 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday noon to 11 p.m. The has pick-up and delivery options. Dr. Zenzen’s Pinot Grigio from The Sobr Market. For a lighter wine, this dealcoholized Pinot Grigio from German winemaker , $19, tastes like a refined apple cider - festive!- when served chilled. If I were to cosplay as a wine expert, I’d add there’s a sweet peach finish and a hint of lemon rind. There isn’t much of a tannin aftertaste, so it’ll also work for those that don’t like the bitter taste of wine. Like its alcoholic counterpart, this wine is easy to pair with food because of its light and tart flavour. Think lighter Italian dishes like risotto and carbonara, as well as steamed shellfish and grilled fish. It also goes well with roasted vegetables, grilled pork, poultry and sushi (who says you can’t have sushi during the holidays?). The label has other dealcoholized wines to choose from at The Sobr Market, which is a great one-stop shop for non-alcoholic wines, spirits, beers, ciders and sparkling waters. The case of the bit came before Donegal Circuit Court as part of an infant ruling case. A barrister outlined the case to Judge John Aylmer explaining the boy was five years old when the accident happened in July 2021. The child was taking part in the game known as 'danger play' at the creche along with two other children. The court was told that the game involved a plank of wood being placed on a log. The boy was standing on one side of the plank and two children stood on the other end, causing him to fall off. The injured child was brought to hospital, where an x-ray confirmed a fracture to a wrist. Under anaesthetic, a corrective procedure was carried out and a plaster of Paris cast was applied. A follow-up appointment showed that the fracture position deteriorated and a further procedure was required. The boy was taken to theatre and the injury was stabilised using K-wires. The court heard that the boy has since started primary school and all injuries have been resolved. He has suffered no further complication and has a full range of motion, the barrister said. A previous offer of €20,415 of general damages was rejected in court. However, the barrister was happy to recommend approval of the new offer of €25,000. Judge John Aylmer said the offer was “very good” and granted its approval.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Titans coach Brian Callahan said Wednesday that wide receiver Treylon Burks , who's been on injured reserve since mid-October with an injured knee, recently had surgery to fix a partially torn ACL. “It was a loose ACL that wasn’t fully torn, and so they had to go see a specialist, so some weeks went by after he went on IR and he eventually had to have ACL surgery,” Callahan said. “The surgery was a couple of weeks back, and the time from when he went to IR until he had the surgery was also a couple of weeks.” Burks was hurt in practice the week after the Titans lost to Indianapolis on Oct. 13 and placed on injured reserve on Oct. 19. The 2022 first-round pick is no stranger to injuries. He suffered concussions in both 2022 against Philadelphia and last year against Pittsburgh. Burks missed six games in each of his first two seasons with the Titans and played in just five games this season before being placed on injured reserve. He finished 2024 with four receptions for 34 yards. For his three NFL seasons, Burks has 53 receptions for 699 yards and one touchdown catch. The Titans (3-9) host Jacksonville (2-10) on Sunday. Police hunt for UnitedHealthcare CEO's masked killer after 'brazen, targeted' attack on NYC street NEW YORK (AP) — A gunman killed UnitedHealthcare’s CEO on Wednesday in a “brazen, targeted attack” outside a Manhattan hotel where the health insurer was holding its investor conference, police said, setting off a massive search for the fleeing assailant hours before the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting nearby. Brian Thompson, 50, was shot around 6:45 a.m. as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown from a nearby hotel, police said. The shooter appeared to be “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Police had not yet established a motive. “Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” Tisch said, adding that the shooting "does not appear to be a random act of violence.” Surveillance video reviewed by investigators shows someone emerging from behind a parked car, pointing a gun at Thompson’s back, then firing multiple times from several feet away. Then Wednesday's targeted fatal shooting of the UnitedHealthcare CEO on a midtown Manhattan sidewalk thrust the executive and his business into the national spotlight. Raiders player Charles Snowden facing misdemeanor DUI charge after Las Vegas arrest LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas Raiders football player Charles Snowden was arrested in Las Vegas on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence and released from custody. The NFL, the Raiders and Snowden’s attorneys acknowledged Thursday the 26-year-old first-year defensive end was arrested early Tuesday. He faces a scheduled court date in April. It’s not clear yet whether the arrest will affect Snowden’s status with the team. He has played every game this season, and the Raiders' next game is at home on Monday.
