Six men have been arrested as part of investigations into a shooting near the prime minister's electorate office. or signup to continue reading Police allege the July 2023 attack, in which two men were shot in a hair salon on a busy suburban strip, was linked to a fatal shooting weeks earlier. The shooting at Marrickville in Sydney's inner-west took place on a Friday afternoon, metres from a police station and the electorate office of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. "They obviously don't care where they do it," Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald told reporters at the time. A 33-year-old was shot in the buttocks and a 20-year-old shot in the chest. Early morning raids on Thursday led to the arrests of six men, as well as the seizure of outlaw motorcycle gang vests, cash, jewellery, drugs and vehicles. Three men are due to face court on Friday, and a 42-year-old man arrested on Queensland's Gold Coast is expected to be extradited. The men were arrested over links to a criminal syndicate identified by police investigating the shooting, with commercial drug supply and kidnapping conspiracies among their alleged activities. None of the men arrested are accused of pulling the trigger. One man, 47, is due to face Burwood Local Court accused of being involved in a joint criminal enterprise planning and conducting the shooting, but is not the alleged gunman, police say. He has also been charged with commercial drug supply, kidnapping conspiracy, proceeds of crime, directing the activities of a criminal group, intimidation, and a domestic violence-related common assault. While police raided properties around Sydney and the Gold Coast, detectives searched bushland and waterways, investigating links between the Marrickville attack and an earlier fatal shooting. Marvin Oraiha, a 24-year-old alleged associate of the same outlaw motorcycle gang as some of the men arrested on Thursday, was shot in his car at Elizabeth Hills in Sydney's west in May 2023. Several men have also been arrested over that shooting, which is thought to have sparked several others as part of an escalating gang war. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team. Vance invited New York Marine veteran and subway rider Daniel Penny to the Army-Navy game. There are some people who aren't happy with this: The message here is so horrifying. https://t.co/9lk3Tgi43m We have very different definitions of 'horrifying', Marianne. What was horrifying was Jordan Neely attacking subway riders -- including breaking one woman's orbital bone. What was horrifying was the way NYC DA Alvin Bragg prosecuted this case after letting guys like Neely off with reduced or dropped charges and little (if any) prison time. Yeah if you see a dangerous man on the subway, you shouldn’t be afraid to act to save everyone else around you. That’s what you’re referring to right? That's not what she's referring to, unfortunately. Just two dudes who have never been convicted of anything going to a football game, what’s the issue? Exactly. If this terrifies you, wait until you’re on facing a lunatic on the subway and there is no Daniel Penny there. That's terrigying. Daniel Penny is a hero and was acquitted by a jury of his peers. Clearly you have no respect for the rule of law, or your country. Clearly. Vance inviting a man to a football game, that protected women on a subway train from being assaulted by a habitual violent offender is horrifying? https://t.co/pVdZqNZxrr That's what she said. “Allow people to be attacked or killed by a maniac on a subway who declared he was going to do just that” is Marianne’s preferred message... https://t.co/U0vIMeLKjT Daniel Penny said he would never be able to forgive himself if Neely had hurt someone on his watch. A Marine saved the lives of passengers as a belligerent criminal threatened to murder everyone and VP-elect Vance has the AUDACITY to invite the hero to attend a game after a jury of his peers finds him not guilty. HORRIFYING!!!!!!! https://t.co/h3yBjoZ7nO Like we said, that word means something different to us. can't believe I have to remind a literal presidential candidate: he did not commit a crime. in the eyes of the law, he protected others and himself. https://t.co/c3SuyfjMQe Lots of people need this reminder. Liberal women are a main driving force behind cultural decay. They hate masculinity and worship victims, they have taken sympathy and made it the only virtue. They demand you have empathy with criminals and castigate heroes. https://t.co/wgVvdYsI3V Exactly this. Daniel Penny said no, and a jury agreed with him.Indiana encouraged by 'total team effort' with Miami (OH) up next
A new app called RapidDeploy has a video feature that allows 911 responders to see and hear what's going on at the scene of an emergency. 911 Dispatcher : Walton County, 911. What's the address of the emergency? Caller : We're out in the water right off of Dolphin Cove. My husband fell in the water off the boat. A woman frantically called 911 after her husband went overboard from a boat off the coast of Florida. And thanks to the video feature in RapidDeploy allowing 911 dispatchers to see and hear what's going on at the scene, they were able to help the woman start her boat, and guide her to the location of the original call to rescue her husband. Apps like RapidDeploy are serving as vital reinforcement for 911 telecommunicators at call centers across the country. Debbie de la Fuente, who has been on the job for 18 years in Arlington, Virginia showed ABC's Elizabeth Schulze how the app works. "I'm going to go ahead and send you a video request," she said. This will pinpoint a caller's exact location and initiate a video call. "I'm going to accept it and there we go. So now you can see me, and if I was at the scene of a crime, you could also see what's happening in real-time," said Schulze. "Yes, which is great for us if we need to obtain a good description of a suspect," said De la Fuente. The new technology has been deployed at over 1,500 911 call centers in 25 states, as they face intense staffing shortages. It's a critical backup in a job where every second counts. A recent national report found a staggering number of unfilled positions at 911 call centers, with an average 25% vacancy rate nationwide. With this technology, there is no app to download. The 911 operator sends you a link and you simply click on it to activate video sharing. When you hang up, the 911 dispatcher no longer has access to your camera or your location.TORONTO, Dec. 13, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- KNGC KNGU, KNGX)) – Brompton Funds announces quarterly distributions payable on January 15, 2025 to unitholders of record on December 31, 2024 for each of the following exchange-traded funds ("ETFs"): Ticker Amount Per Unit Brompton Canadian Cash Flow Kings ETF KNGC Cdn$0.082 Brompton U.S. Cash Flow Kings ETF KNGU Cdn$0.043 Brompton International Cash Flow Kings ETF KNGX Cdn$0.098 Brompton Funds also announces special distributions for the ETFs estimated as noted below to unitholders of record at the close of business December 31, 2024 that will be automatically reinvested in additional units. TikTok asks federal appeals court to bar enforcement of potential ban until Supreme Court reviewPanel formed to look into demands of education dept employee unionsIn an Edmonton Oilers news and rumors update, Zach Hyman returns for the Edmonton Oilers, while Viktor Arvidsson remains out. Meanwhile, the 4 Nations teams were announced and while a few names made it, several Oilers didn’t make the final cut. Who did make the team? And, for those who didn’t, will it light a fire under them to start upping their production and contributing more to prove a point they were overlooked? Hyman Returns vs. Blue Jackets on Thursday Zach Hyman is confirmed to return to the Edmonton Oilers lineup after missing five games due to injury. TSN’s Ryan Rishaug posted on Thursday morning , “Hyman back and on top line with 97 and 93.” Hyman said he was excited to get back into the lineup and is confident in his ability to start putting goals on the board, which is something the Oilers desperately need. Hyman was asked if he’s hoping to still make Team Canada if there’s an injury. He responded that he hopes everyone stays healthy and that Canada does great. He doesn’t want to get on the team that way. Rishaug observed notable line combinations at practice, with Leon Draisaitl skating alongside Vasily Podkolzin and Kasperi Kapanen, while Jeff Skinner was paired with Mattias Janmark and Adam Henrique. Derek Ryan joined Corey Perry and Connor Brown. Each line features a mix of speed and skill, but the standout takeaway is players are positioned in roles that better align with their strengths and expected contributions. Calvin Pickard gets the start for the Oilers in goal. Question Marks Surrounding Viktor Arvidsson’s Injury The Daily Hive asked head coach Kris Knoblauch for a status update and the bench boss didn’t have one. “It’s obviously gone on longer than we anticipated,” Knoblauch said. “We thought it would be just a couple of days off, but it hasn’t healed as expected.” As of now, there is no timeline for his return. This is clearly not a good thing for the Oilers, who were expecting that Arvidsson might not miss any games at all. That he’s now missed several games, isn’t skating, and there is no indication about when he might return, there has to be growing concern that the Oilers signed a player who isn’t going to be nearly as productive as they might have hoped. Interestingly, Arvidsson was still selected for his 4 Nations team. McDavid Excited About the 4 Nations Tournament “Nowhere else I’d rather be than in Montreal and Boston on those two weeks,” said Connor McDavid when asked about his being named to Team Canada. His selection was not a surprise, but the fact that no other Oilers were picked to be on the team might have come as a bit of a shock. Evan Bouchard, Hyman, and Stuart Skinner were also believed to have a good shot of making the team before the season started. None of them were selected, and likely because they have all struggled to start the 2024-25 campaign. Skinner might have been among the more interesting omissions, if only because he wasn’t even listed on insider’s alternates team. Canada’s goaltending isn’t exactly elite, and the fact Skinner took the Oiler to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final and has been one of the better Canadian netminders over the past couple of seasons, he still didn’t get much consideration among analysts. The hope for Oilers fans is that being snubbed will light a fire under all three players. Mattias Ekholm was selected for Team Sweden. Republican National Committee Treasurer KC Crosbie told fellow members Sunday night that she is running for RNC co-chair to replace Lara Trump, who said Sunday night she is stepping down from that post. “This position demands leadership, communication, and the ability to unify our diverse membership while supporting President Trump and his Administration’s bold initiative to “Make America Great Again,” Crosbie, who is also the RNC national committeewoman from Kentucky, wrote in an email to RNC members, which was obtained by NBC News. “I am committed to fulfilling the responsibilities of RNC Co-Chair with the same dedication I have brought to the role of Treasurer.” The RNC co-chair role got significant attention during the 2024 election after President-elect Donald Trump helped install his daughter-in-law to the post as part of his takeover of the party infrastructure. Trump-backed RNC Chair Michael Whatley will has already agreed to remain in that post. “At the RNC, we had three distinct goals: 1) surpass all fundraising records 2) build the largest army of lawyers and poll watchers to ensure election integrity and, 3) turn out millions of Americans and low propensity voters during early voting. We accomplished all three,” Lara Trump wrote in an X post Sunday night announcing she was leaving the post. Crosbie’s email to RNC members came hours later. She highlighted the RNC’s fundraising numbers during her tenure as treasurer and the organization’s internal financial controls. “By implementing best practices and reinforcing internal controls, the RNC earned clean audits from our external auditors, while further strengthening the confidence of both grassroots supporters and major donors,” Crosbie wrote. It’s unlikely anyone would be able to secure enough support to replace Lara Trump without the explicit approval of Donald Trump or his team. Neither Crosbie or the Trump campaign responded to requests seeking comment. An RNC member told NBC News that “she is well liked” by the committee members. Crosbie was elected to serve as Kentucky’s RNC committeewoman in 2012 and picked to serve as the organization’s treasurer in June 2023. At the time, she said she would be a “steward and watchdog of funds raised to support the RNC.” Lara Trump's decision to step down comes as she has also been actively lobbying for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to appoint her to the Senate seat being vacated by Marco Rubio, Donald Trump's pick to serve as secretary of state. “Certainly, we’ve all had the opportunity over the past nine years to fully involve ourselves in politics, to understand the American people, what they want, and we’ve all been residents of the state of Florida now for over three years,” she told Fox News on Sunday. “If that’s something that’s put in front of me, it would be a true honor.” Four sources familiar with the process told NBC News Monday that Lara Trump’s resignation has no bearing on the potential Senate pick and that DeSantis is not likely to make a decision until early January. He is also considering picks from Florida's ranks of elected Republicans, like state Attorney General Ashley Moody, Lt. Gov. Jeanette Núñez, former state House Speaker Paul Renner and Jose Oliva and Secretary of State Cord Byrd, as well as DeSantis chief of staff James Uthmeier. Most of the Trump family and many major supporters have publicly said that they support Lara Trump getting the appointment. She is still in consideration but is not seen as holding frontrunner status at the moment. We are less than two weeks away from the start of the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. I&M and Stakeholders File Large Load Settlement to Advance Grid Reliability and Support Economic GrowthFLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Breece Hall could play Sunday at Jacksonville after missing a game with a knee injury. Hall has been dealing with a hyperextension and injured MCL in his left knee that sidelined him last Sunday at Miami. But he was a full participant at practice Friday after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday. Hall was officially listed as questionable on the team's final injury report. “He looks good right now,” interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said. “So it’s promising.” Hall leads the Jets with 692 yards rushing and four touchdown runs, and he also has 401 yards receiving and two scores on 46 catches. A pair of rookies helped New York offset Hall's absence last weekend, with Braelon Allen rushing for 43 yards on 11 carries, and Isaiah Davis getting 40 yards on 10 attempts and scoring his first rushing touchdown. “We’re hopeful and we’ll see how it goes,” Ulbrich said of Hall. The Jets will get star cornerback Sauce Gardner back after he missed a game with a hamstring injury, but New York's secondary appears likely to be without cornerback D.J. Reed because of a groin injury. Reed was listed as doubtful after he didn't practice Thursday or Friday. “It’s been something that’s kind of lingered here and there,” Ulbrich said. “It’s gotten aggravated and then it went away, and then it got aggravated again. So, it’s just dealing with that.” Backup Brandin Echols is out with a shoulder injury, so veteran Isaiah Oliver or rookie Qwan'tez Stiggers could get the start opposite Gardner if Reed can't play. Kendall Sheffield also could be elevated from the practice squad for the second game in a row. Ulbrich said kick returner Kene Nwangwu will be placed on injured reserve after breaking a hand last weekend at Miami. The injury came a week after he was selected the AFC special teams player of the week in his Jets debut, during which he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and forced a fumble in a loss to Seattle. “To put him out there with a broken hand, just thought it’d be counterproductive for him and for us as a team, so it unfortunately cuts the season short and what a bright light he was,” Ulbrich said. “What an amazing future I think he has in this league. With saying that, he’s already been a really good player for quite a while, so (it's) unfortunate, but he’ll be back.” Offensive lineman Xavier Newman (groin) is doubtful, while right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) and RT Morgan Moses (wrist) are questionable.
