In just a few months, Marin native Tia Creighton has interviewed a witch, a plumber and a skinfluencer, a social media personality who creates content about skincare and beauty. But not everything is as it seems on her online talk show, “Turing with Tia.” The guests she’s speaking to aren’t in her studio but rather AI chatbots. Together, they spontaneously tackle some of our society’s most pressing issues and other topics that Creighton finds interesting. Not knowing where these conversations will go, the show “allows us to enjoy the technology while also enjoying our humanity,” she said. Creighton, who grew up in San Rafael and went to Marin Catholic — where her parents met — is drawn to exploring the intersection of communication, technology and culture. The fourth-generation Marin native, who now lives in Redwood City, has been a writer and an editor for more than 35 years, and also now works as a special education paraeducator. “Turing with Tia” can be found online at youtube.com/@TuringwithTia . Q How did Marin influence you? A I’ve been a writer since I was a little kid. Marin created space for me to run wild and use my imagination with my siblings, not just in the West End but at my maternal grandparents’ (house) in Sausalito and my paternal grandparents’ (house) in San Anselmo. I was one of five born in seven years. This free lifestyle encouraged inventiveness and independence. The neighborhood where I grew up was full of kids my age. I partnered with many of them to put on shows. One of my collaborators was none other than Jim Sweeney, who is the executive producer and creative talent behind Hubba Hubba Revue in San Francisco. Marin was and still is a great place to play and create. Q There’s so much humor behind what you do. Did you approach this venture with humor in the forefront of your mind? A Absolutely. I’ve done a lot of different kinds of writing work, but what I really love to do is satire and humor. Making fun of society is kind of my wheelhouse. I went to grad school late and studied what was a liberal studies program. The school, Arizona State University, allowed us to be flexible about what courses we wanted to take. I ended up creating this intersection of communication, tech and culture. From that, it was about the digitizing of the humanities. When I came out of school, I had a couple of episodes of a podcast for a class. I was interviewing teachers, because I felt like the teachers got slammed after COVID, and I wanted to help and give “voice to the teacher voice.” I showed it to somebody, and they’re like, “You should be on camera. You should be a host.” And I was like, what would I host? Who would show up as a guest? Well, how about AI? That’d be funny. It’s natural for me to try to commit to making it funny, but the AI was making it funny. I didn’t know it would be a great partner. It was a good comedy act in a way. Q How does it work? A There’s a lot of improv, because I don’t pre-interview the AI. In fact, when I do the research for the show, I stay off of AI. And then, before I start the show, I set a framework for the AI, like, I want you to answer the questions as if you are the witch behind all witches in history. And then I just see where it goes. I do a lot of research so that I know when it’s off-track or misinterpreting what I’m asking. That helps me either call the AI out on it, in a funny way, or I’ll stop and do minor adjustments. Q How do you decide “who” to talk to? A I’m usually trying to pick “characters” that we can’t really interview, because if I could interview them, I would just interview that person. Like, I’m never going to be able to interview a witch. I look at what’s topical, what’s in my head or what I’m noticing in the world. Q Does your work bleed into other areas of your life? A I think teaching is like improv. You’re on a stage. You have an audience, and you’re trying to keep them engaged. And I work with little kids, so there’s a lot of funny stuff that happens. So that actually helps a lot. I have had a long history of blending both disciplines. I spent, for example, years as a technical writer and an instructional designer, and yet I am also a published poet and essayist. Q What are your feelings about AI? A I’m really curious about it. I’m less fearful of it than most of the average people that I talk to. I think a lot of people are afraid of it, and they don’t want anything to do with it. I feel like I’m helping make it a little bit more approachable for the average person, or a little less intimidating. So people can see, like, well, what is it? What can it do? Where does it have fault? Where is its strength? And at the same time, I’m not like there’s nothing to fear here, because we don’t really know where it’s going to go. Q The name of the show is a nod to Alan Turing, who created the Turing Test, a thought experiment that assesses a machine’s ability to exhibit human-like intelligence. Why? A During COVID, I earned a certificate in computational social science through the University of California at Davis and Coursera. I learned a lot about how we use technology to influence society, and how we can study society with technology now. And I learned about Alan Turing and the Turing Test. With the show, we’re taking a “tour” through my head, and then each episode is a little Turing Test. Can you tell if this is AI or not? I’ve had people say to me, “What’s going on? Who are you interviewing?” And I’m like, “It’s not a person.” It’s a little alarming when I do talk to my peers or people who don’t understand that. The average person still has a lot to learn about it, which is a little scary too because some people are so well-versed in it. And then you wonder what’s going to happen with that power dynamic. But, I want people to have a laugh, and if each episode achieves that, I feel really good about it.
Khalid has just publicly shared that he is gay, but he clarified that he only chose to reveal his sexuality after being outed. On Friday, Nov. 22, the seven-time Grammy nominee posted multiple updates on X , including one in which he stated, “I got outted and the world still continues to turn.” He then added, “Let’s get this straight (lmao) I am not ashamed of my sexuality! In reality it ain’t nobodies business! But I am okay with me 🖤 love y’all.” Fans quickly speculated that rapper and singer Hugo Almonte was behind the outing. The 28-year-old posted a photo on X—which has since been deleted—with the 26-year-old artist less than 30 minutes before Khalid came out on social media. Here’s what to know about Almonte and a closer look at their relationship. Who Is Hugo Almonte? Almonte is an openly bisexual Dominican American from New York. A social media star, he has since been working to build a career in music. In March 2023, he released his debut album, El Can Se Acabó . A post shared by Hugo D Almonte (@hugodalmonte) On Instagram, Almonte has over 300k followers, and he also has a YouTube channel with 11,000 subscribers. Did Almonte Out Khalid? Almonte took to X with claims about an ex, whom he did not initially identify by name, but said, “One of your favorite gay R&B singers suck my d**k and it was really bad.” He then claimed he dated and broke up with a “dumb a** singer” who allegedly falsely accused him of breaking into their home. “He’s ugly as f**k but he tried to set me up and lie and say I broke into his house because I broke up with him like why would I go to your house and do all that if I broke up with you dumb a**!” Almonte followed up with a since-deleted selfie with Khalid, captioning it, “B**ch a** 🥷🏾 lied and said that I broke into his house cause I didn’t want him.” When addressing the situation in a series of his own social media posts, Khalid mentioned that he “wasn’t hiding anything,” responding to supportive followers who noted that the revelation wasn’t all that shocking. However, Khalid emphasized that it was his decision to make and that, ultimately, it was nobody’s business. I wasn’t hiding anything! It’s just not any of your business https://t.co/jAW9f7I5oO — Khalid (@thegreatkhalid) November 23, 2024 In an email statement to Vulture , Almonte defended his actions, saying, “[It’s] really funny how it works because my intentions was never to out someone who’s clearly been out already in the community in Los Angeles.” Almonte added that people have started to “belittle” his character and send him death threats. “All I’ve learned from this is never allow anyone to silence me, it’s crazy that these people said I was chasing clout, when I was holding onto this for five years, and I finally had enough,” he concluded. Almonte also tweeted and deleted a longer, similar statement from the Notes app, doubling down on his position. He declared, “If I had a chance to do it all over, I would do it again and again and again the same way.”Why Is NatWest Group plc (NWG) Among the Best Bank Stocks to Invest In Now?TOKYO (AP) — Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan have announced plans to work toward a merger that would form the world's third-largest automaker by sales, as the industry undergoes dramatic changes in its transition away from fossil fuels. The two companies said they had signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday and that smaller Nissan alliance member Mitsubishi Motors Corp. also had agreed to join the talks on integrating their businesses. Automakers in Japan have lagged behind their big rivals in electric vehicles and are trying to cut costs and make up for lost time as newcomers like China's BYD and EV market leader Tesla devour market share. Honda's president, Toshihiro Mibe, said Honda and Nissan will attempt to unify their operations under a joint holding company. Honda will lead the new management, retaining the principles and brands of each company. They aim to have a formal merger agreement by June and to complete the deal and list the holding company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by August 2026, he said. No dollar value was given and the formal talks are just starting, Mibe said. There are “points that need to be studied and discussed,” he said. “Frankly speaking, the possibility of this not being implemented is not zero.” A merger could result in a behemoth worth more than $50 billion based on the market capitalisation of all three automakers. Together, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi would gain scale to compete with Toyota Motor Corp. and with Germany's Volkswagen AG. Toyota has technology partnerships with Japan's Mazda Motor Corp. and Subaru Corp. News of a possible merger surfaced earlier this month, with unconfirmed reports saying Taiwan iPhone maker Foxconn was seeking to tie up with Nissan by buying shares from the Japan's company's other alliance partner, Renault SA of France. Nissan's CEO Makoto Uchida said Foxconn had not directly approach his company. He also acknowledged that Nissan's situation was “severe.” Even after a merger Toyota, which rolled out 11.5 million vehicles in 2023, would remain the leading Japanese automaker. If they join, the three smaller companies would make about 8 million vehicles. In 2023, Honda made 4 million and Nissan produced 3.4 million. Mitsubishi Motors made just over 1 million. “We have come to the realisation that in order for both parties to be leaders in this mobility transformation, it is necessary to make a more bold change than a collaboration in specific areas,” Mibe said. Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi earlier agreed to share components for electric vehicles like batteries and to jointly research software for autonomous driving to adapt better to electrification. Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo One day after it seemed he was likely to play, the Carolina Panthers ruled out pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney for Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a knee injury. Clowney, 31, has 3.5 sacks in 10 games during his first season with the Panthers, collecting 2.5 of those in the past two games, both losses to the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had 9.5 sacks in 17 games (15 starts) with the Baltimore Ravens last season. Clowney was listed as questionable Friday, with all signs pointing to him being on the field against the Eagles. "I expect him to play right now," Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Friday. The Panthers also downgraded safety Nick Scott (hamstring/personal) to out on Sunday after he did not practice Friday. He is in the middle of a three-week window to be activated from injured reserve. Wide receiver Dan Chisena and linebacker Jacoby Windmon were elevated from the practice squad. --Field Level Media REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you. Superannuation is one of the most important financial tools for securing your , but how does your balance stack up against the average for Australians in your age group? Understanding where you stand can provide valuable insight into whether you're on track for the lifestyle you envision in retirement—whether that's a comfortable retirement with plenty of financial freedom or a more modest lifestyle covering the basics. Different retirement lifestyles Firstly, let's look at what a comfortable and modest lifestyle in retirement means according to Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia ( ). It is the peak policy, research and advocacy body for Australia's superannuation industry. ASFA describes a comfortable retirement as follows: The comfortable retirement standard allows retirees to maintain a good standard of living in their post work years. It accounts for daily essentials, such as groceries, transport and home repairs, as well as private health insurance, a range of exercise and leisure activities and the occasional restaurant meal. Importantly it enables retirees to remain connected to family and friends virtually – through technology, and in person with an annual domestic trip and an international trip once every seven years. Whereas a modest retirement strips back on things like international trips and leisure activities. It is described as: The modest retirement standard budgets for a retirement lifestyle that is slightly above the Age Pension and allows retirees to afford basic health insurance and infrequent exercise, leisure and social activities with family and friends. What do you need? Based on the assumption that the retirees own their own home outright and are relatively healthy, a comfortable retirement currently requires the following superannuation at 67: For a modest retirement, significantly less is required: How do you compare? That's how much you need, but how much superannuation do Australians actually have? Here's the most recent data according to QSuper: Do you have enough to retire comfortably? This is a difficult question to answer because everybody is different. But you can use a calculator like to plug in your numbers and find out whether or not you are on track to retire comfortably. If you are on track, that's great! If not, don't be too disheartened. Making extra superannuation contributions could help you get to target by the time you retire. But it is worth remembering that the comfortable retirement figures are for today. Due to inflation, someone that is now in their 20s will likely require significantly more when they reach retirement age compared with someone that is about to retire. So, always aim for more superannuation than you think you will need. It's certainly better to have too much than too little.
Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy will be staying on after agreeing to a restructured deal, according to news reports published Saturday. The deal reportedly will shift some of his salary to revenue sharing with players. Gundy has talked often about how difficult it is to compete financially in this new era. The Cowboys were among the preseason favorites in the Big 12, but a rash of injuries and problems at quarterback tanked the team, and a 3-9 season culminated with a 52-0 loss at Colorado . The school's Board of Regents held a special meeting on Friday morning regarding his status, but no immediate action was taken. The fact that Gundy has 169 wins in 20 years and has reached the Big 12 title game two of the past four seasons, plus a hefty buyout, likely saved him from being fired outright. The Cowboys won the conference in 2011 and had been to bowl games for 18 straight seasons before this one. It had been a while since the Cowboys struggled like they did this season, and Gundy upset the fan base when he fired back at his critics. “In most cases, the people that are negative and voicing their opinion are the same ones that can’t pay their own bills,” Gundy said. “They’re not taking care of themselves. They’re not taking care of their own family. They’re not taking care of their own job. But they have an obligation to speak out and complain about others because it makes them feel better. "But then, in the end, when they go to bed at night, they’re the same failure that they were before they said anything negative about anybody else.” Gundy has made several apologies over the years for comments and behavior, but his success has kept him safe. In 2020, he apologized for calling COVID-19 the “Chinese Virus .” He apologized again that year after he wore a T-shirt featuring the far-right One America News Network that upset star running back Chuba Hubbard. The Cowboys reportedly have parted ways with offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo. Dunn became offensive coordinator in 2020. He held the position last season, when running back Ollie Gordon II won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back. Gordon wasn't quite as good this season, and a highly touted offensive line struggled to open holes for him. Nardo was hired in 2023 and had a solid first year. He coached much of this season without injured stars Nick Martin and Collin Oliver. Martin was the top defensive player in the AP's Big 12 mid-season awards. The Cowboys ranked last in the Big 12 in points allowed and yards per game allowed. They gave up 500.6 yards per contest, by far the worst in the 16-team league. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll and https://apnews.com/hub/college-footballRaiders coach Antonio Pierce recently was asked what he noticed about the three teams ahead of his in the AFC West. Pierce, as blunt as they come, wasted no time answering. “Quarterback play,” he said. “Bottom line, quarterback play.” Pierce might as well have been speaking for every losing team across what has increasingly become a league of haves and have-nots. Eight NFL teams have won three or fewer games this season, including the 2-10 Raiders. The overwhelming common denominator among those teams is poor quarterback play. Six of those clubs have quarterbacks who rank in the bottom 10 in overall QB rating (QBR). Other than the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots, who are starting young quarterbacks taken in the first three picks of the past two drafts, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are contractually locked into Trevor Lawrence on a five-year, $275 million contract, each of them will look to upgrade through the draft, free agency or the trade market in the offseason. Meanwhile, if the season ended today, six of the 14 teams that would make the playoffs boast quarterbacks with top-10 ratings. Seven others have quarterbacks within the top 20 in QBR. Only C.J. Stroud, whose Houston Texans sit atop the AFC South, is out of the top 20. And his 53.2 rating is 21st. Clearly, there is a correlation between winning and good quarterback play. Yes, football is the ultimate team sport, and as the 4-8 Cincinnati Bengals have shown, having a quarterback such as Joe Burrow, who ranks third in QBR, guarantees nothing with a defense ranked 31st. But there is no doubt that winning is difficult without good quarterback play and borderline impossible in terms of competing for the Super Bowl without great quarterback play. Acknowledging that reality is the easy part. The far more elusive aspect is actually reaching into the college ranks and securing and developing a quarterback capable of ensuring even moderate success, let alone the kind necessary to hoist a Lombardi Trophy. Between the bad luck of never being able to select a high-end quarterback and a volatile return rate that produces more busts and below-average quarterbacks than successful ones, filling the most important position on a football field can be an arduous ordeal. Just ask the Raiders, who have been on a 22-year odyssey trying to find a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback. Or the New York Jets, who have nothing to show for the two quarterbacks they invested top-3 picks in the past seven drafts? “Identifying, projecting, acquiring and developing college quarterbacks into thriving NFL quarterbacks has and will more than likely always be as difficult a task as there is in the NFL,” Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead said. Why is it so hard? So many factors contribute to the difficulties of evaluating NFL-worthy college quarterbacks and developing them into viable NFL players. There are the physical traits: arm strength, accuracy, timing and mobility. But then there are the more subtle traits unavailable to the naked eye. “So much of what you have to evaluate is stuff you don’t see on tape,” an NFL personnel executive said. “Their drive, their ability to problem solve, mental toughness to overcome and deal with the criticism and the pressure of the position. The obsession with knowing the offense inside and out.” None of this is new, of course. “It’s always been hard,” Raiders offensive coordinator Scott Turner said. “There are certain things that you look for, but there’s so many factors involved. Obviously the physical traits, but there’s so much, I don’t want to say pressure, but there’s so much that goes into playing quarterback and being under a microscope, and it’s not just what you do on the football field, and that’s a lot.” What makes it even more perplexing is that contemporary players’ knowledge and ability levels are far more advanced now than they were 20 years ago. High school quarterbacks are throwing the ball more than ever and benefit from the proliferation of spring and summer seven-on-seven games that provide them with competitive live reps on a year-round basis. At the college level, quarterbacks are throwing the ball at record rates. That’s far different from two decades ago when most college quarterbacks operated out of two-back sets and handed the ball off more than they threw it. NFL evaluators had to evaluate in a vacuum then. Information and teaching points have never been more accessible, thanks to the internet, multiple quarterback coaches and experts offering online film sessions. Peyton Manning’s film breakdowns of NFL quarterbacks on ESPN’s “Detail” have become appointment viewing for young quarterbacks. Former NFL quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan hosts the hugely popular “The QB School” on YouTube. Contemporary quarterbacks have also credited the Madden video football game with teaching them about coverage schemes and how to attack them. Technology has advanced over the years, providing young quarterbacks with tools such as virtual reality headsets and software to simulate defenses, timing and speed. It’s no surprise, then, that young quarterbacks such as Burrow, Stroud, Los Angeles Chargers star Justin Herbert, Washington Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels and Denver Broncos rookie Bo Nix were immediate contributors. “There are plenty of examples of highly successful young quarterbacks,” one NFL personnel executive said. “You can’t overlook the wins.” Nevertheless, the hit rate for high-end quarterbacks has not improved over the years. “It’s always been difficult to evaluate this position,” an NFL front office executive said. “And those unseen traits separate the ones who can and the ones who can’t.” Flawed process, in some cases Much of what goes right or wrong for a young quarterback comes down to the same age-old principles. “It still depends on the person and the situation,” Snead said. “The situation they are leaving and coming into.” Along with new collective bargaining rules that have reduced the time players can practice and be present in their team facilities, young quarterbacks are beholden to the infrastructure of the teams that draft them. Depending on the coaching, personnel and stability of the franchise, it can set them up for success or failure. Some young quarterbacks are forced to play before they are ready out of necessity. If they don’t have adequate help around them, that often leads to struggles, impatience and stunted growth. “Quarterbacks don’t get enough time to develop,” an NFL personnel executive said. “There is pressure to play right away. College quarterbacks are taking Football 101, and everyone wants to rush them to Football 500.” The Jets moved on from Sam Darnold, whom they drafted third overall in 2017, after just three seasons. The Cleveland Browns drafted Baker Mayfield first overall in that same draft. They got rid of him within four years. Now in Minnesota, Darnold has the 10-2 Vikings in the thick of the NFC playoff race. Mayfield’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers are tied for first place in the NFC South after winning the division and a playoff game last season. Amazingly, both players were on the same Panthers roster in 2022. “A case of giving up on guys too early,” an NFL personnel executive said. At their previous stops, their teams didn’t have the patience or wherewithal to commit and execute a development plan. Darnold had two head coaches and two offensive coordinators in his three seasons with the Jets. His replacement, Zach Wilson, drafted No. 2 overall in 2021, played under two offensive coordinators during his three seasons in New York. It’s hard enough to master one NFL offensive scheme. But to abruptly switch to another makes the process even more difficult. And if success isn’t happening overnight for high draft picks such as Wilson and Darnold, it’s not long before they are shown the door. It’s completely counter intuitive but happens all the time. As opposed to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes, who developed behind Alex Smith during his rookie season of 2017. Or Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love, who learned behind Aaron Rodgers for two seasons before taking over in 2023. Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson waited nine games behind Joe Flacco before getting his first start as a rookie in 2018. Mahomes is a three-time Super Bowl champion. Jackson is a two-time MVP and three-time Pro Bowler. Love has the Packers on the cusp of the playoffs for the second straight season. “I think just understanding that every case is different,” Turner said. “Some guys are going to come in, and because of maybe the team around them or just how they’re wired, they’re going to catch fire. And then there are some other guys that may not be, and it takes them a little longer.”

The government's product safety regulator run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a number of product recalls for items that could end up under the tree over the festive season and land their owners in hospital. Anyone who has already bought any of the items should stop using them immediately and return them to their place of purchase for a refund, the ACCC said. Jishaku: The Game of Magnetic Action The safety regulator said this board game does not comply with the permanent ban on small high-powered magnets. New photo emerges of loved-up Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce in VIP suite at Chiefs game after win over Texans READ MORE: New Heights deletes Kelce post that appeared to show manhood By OLIVER SALT Published: 15:07 EST, 23 December 2024 | Updated: 17:05 EST, 23 December 2024 e-mail 59 shares 17 View comments A smitten Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are all smiles alongside his former high-school coach in new photos from the Kansas City Chiefs' win over the Houston Texans . Swift headed back to Arrowhead for the first time in over three weeks on Sunday after wrapping up her last ever Eras Tour show earlier this month, and she saw a victory on her return. In their final home regular-season outing of the season, Kelce and the Chiefs sealed a 27-19 win over the Texans to move to 14-1 and build hope of an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl . Travis' popstar-girlfriend was not the only significant figure in his VIP suite on Sunday, nevertheless. The NFL star also invited Jeff Rotsky - who coached him in his senior year at Cleveland Heights High School - and his daughter Emmie along to watch the game from the luxury of his private box. Rotsky shared pictures of him and Emmie with Travis and Taylor on the day, as well as a number of former Cleveland players who were also invited to Arrowhead. Kelce posed next to Jeff in a super-expensive outfit he also arrived at the game in, which consisted of a $1,595 beige faux-fur jacket from luxury designer Marni and a $4,225 Louis Vuitton flat cap. Swift, meanwhile, was wearing a fluffy red jacket and black boots while holding a red handbag. The songstress, who was joined at the game by her mom Andrea and dad Scott on Sunday, completed the look with a black fedora. Kelce had five receptions for 30 yards against the Texans but his wait goes on to set the franchise record for touchdowns with Kansas City while still tied with Tony Gonzalez on 76. The Chiefs tight end and his girlfriend have been the subject of engagement rumors over the past week after photos from her Eras Tour birthday party surfaced last week. Eagle-eyed Swifties spotted a strange detail in some of the pictures to emerge from the bash, as their beloved singer appeared to be covering her ring finger with her little finger in a snap with Brittany Mahomes and Lyndsay Bell. Several photos showed Swift sipping on a cocktail, and one fan who goes by @lizpwoods on Instagram, pointed out that the singer's left ring finger looked 'blurred' in one shot. Swift did not appear to be wearing a ring in the pictures shared by Ross Travis, who attended the party and was formerly a teammate of Kelce's. One of the images showed Travis and Taylor looking suave while Ross is singing into a microphone. He captioned the picture on his Instagram story: 'Eras complete, congrats Tay!' The other shows Taylor herself dancing with the microphone in her hand with Kelce stood close to her. Forthright and fearless, the Nobel Prize winner took pot-shots at former prime minister Tony Blair and ex-US president George W Bush among others. His death came after repeated bouts of illness in which images of the increasingly frail former president failed to erase memories of his fierce spirit. Democrat James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr swept to power in 1977 with his Trust Me campaign helping to beat Republican president Gerald Ford. Serving as 39th US president from 1977 to 1981, he sought to make government “competent and compassionate” but was ousted by the unstoppable Hollywood appeal of a certain Ronald Reagan. A skilled sportsman, Mr Carter left his home of Plains, Georgia, to join the US Navy, returning later to run his family’s peanut business. A stint in the Georgia senate lit the touchpaper on his political career and he rose to the top of the Democratic movement. But he will also be remembered for a bizarre encounter with a deeply disgruntled opponent. The president was enjoying a relaxing fishing trip near his home town in 1979 when his craft was attacked by a furious swamp rabbit which reportedly swam up to the boat hissing wildly. The press had a field day, with one paper bearing the headline President Attacked By Rabbit. Away from encounters with belligerent bunnies, Mr Carter’s willingness to address politically uncomfortable topics did not diminish with age. He recently said that he would be willing to travel to North Korea for peace talks on behalf of US President Donald Trump. He also famously mounted a ferocious and personal attack on Tony Blair over the Iraq war, weeks before the prime minister left office in June 2007. Mr Carter, who had already denounced George W Bush’s presidency as “the worst in history”, used an interview on BBC radio to condemn Mr Blair for his tight relations with Mr Bush, particularly concerning the Iraq War. Asked how he would characterise Mr Blair’s relationship with Mr Bush, Mr Carter replied: “Abominable. Loyal, blind, apparently subservient. “I think that the almost undeviating support by Great Britain for the ill-advised policies of President Bush in Iraq have been a major tragedy for the world.” Mr Carter was also voluble over the Rhodesia crisis, which was about to end during his presidency. His support for Robert Mugabe at the time generated widespread criticism. He was said to have ignored the warnings of many prominent Zimbabweans, black and white, about what sort of leader Mugabe would be. This was seen by Mr Carter’s critics as “deserving a prominent place among the outrages of the Carter years”. Mr Carter has since said he and his administration had spent more effort and worry on Rhodesia than on the Middle East. He admitted he had supported two revolutionaries in Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo, and with hindsight said later that Mugabe had been “a good leader gone bad”, having at first been “a very enlightened president”. One US commentator wrote: “History will not look kindly on those in the West who insisted on bringing the avowed Marxist Mugabe into the government. “In particular, the Jimmy Carter foreign policy... bears some responsibility for the fate of a small African country with scant connection to American national interests.” In recent years Mr Carter developed a reputation as an international peace negotiator. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his commitment to finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, his work with human rights and democracy initiatives, and his promotion of economic and social programmes. Mr Carter was dispatched to North Korea in August 2008 to secure the release of US citizen Aijalon Mahli Gomes, who had been sentenced to eight years of hard labour after being found guilty of illegally entering North Korea. He successfully secured the release of Mr Gomes. In 2010 he returned to the White House to greet President Barack Obama and discuss international affairs amid rising tensions on the Korean peninsula. Proving politics runs in the family, in 2013 his grandson Jason, a state senator, announced his bid to become governor in Georgia, where his famous grandfather governed before becoming president. He eventually lost to incumbent Republican Nathan Deal. Fears that Mr Carter’s health was deteriorating were sparked in 2015 when he cut short an election observation visit in Guyana because he was “not feeling well”. It would have been Mr Carter’s 39th trip to personally observe an international election. Three months later, on August 12, he revealed he had cancer which had been diagnosed after he underwent surgery to remove a small mass in his liver. Mr Obama was among the well-wishers hoping for Mr Carter’s full recovery after it was confirmed the cancer had spread widely. Melanoma had been found in his brain and liver, and Mr Carter underwent immunotherapy and radiation therapy, before announcing in March the following year that he no longer needed any treatment. In 2017, Mr Carter was taken to hospital as a precaution, after he became dehydrated at a home-building project in Canada. He was admitted to hospital on multiple occasions in 2019 having had a series of falls, suffering a brain bleed and a broken pelvis, as well as a stint to be treated for a urinary tract infection. Mr Carter spent much of the coronavirus pandemic largely at his home in Georgia, and did not attend Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration in 2021, but extended his “best wishes”. Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the closest adviser to Mr Carter during his term as US president, died in November 2023. She had been living with dementia and suffering many months of declining health. “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” Mr Carter said in a statement following her death. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”MMIS Inc. Check out more of the year's best tech in our PC Gamer Hardware Awards 2024 coverage. I've looked at a lot of new PC gaming tech this year. Looking at my Steam Replay listing, far more than I've consistently played new games, that's for sure. From the RTX 40-series refresh in January, to the first proper modular gaming laptop, weird handhelds, ace gaming CPUs, and funky laptops, I've dabbled in every facet of the industry. Which is why I'm still doing this twenty years after I took my first faltering steps as a PC technology journalist; there's always some new toy to play with. But when it actually came to sitting down and thinking about what's been my pick of all the gear I've had my hands on this year, what's been the thing that either surprised or pleased me the most, well, that's been tougher than I really expected. Somewhat strangely, what I've landed on is not the thing which I've scored the highest, and yet it's the thing I've had the most lingering affection for. The Asus TUF A14 continues my trend of getting all excited about wee 14-inch gaming laptops, but it also leans into my frugal nature, too, being part of the Taiwanese giant's more affordable brand. It's a 14-inch gaming laptop I was expecting to be fine but mostly unexciting. Sure, the AMD Strix Point spec is grand—the same as in our overall pick as the current best gaming laptop—but the TUF lappies have long been the frumpy cousins to the supermodel stylings of the ROG Zephyrus machines. We've been giddy over the gorgeous ROG Zephyrus G14 and Zephyrus G16 designs launched at CES way back at the start of this year, and I wasn't expecting to see the same design notes being present when I pulled the TUF A14 out of its unassuming box and protective sleeving. But it's a delightfully slim little laptop, and one that is far more restrained than I've ever seen from the traditionally very 'gamer' TUF range of laptops. That, admittedly, is still evident when you flip open the lid and are greeted by the angular Asus font on the keyboard. That's something I still find pretty damned ugly, but is really the only nod to that more aggressive styling we've become used to from standard Asus gear. Though that is obviously changing. This is very much a proper gaming laptop—it has a 100 W RTX 4060 inside that slimline chassis after all—but one that also isn't going to look out of place in a seminar, workshop, or team meeting. There is naught but a faded 'TUF' logo in one corner of the lid and that's it for outward adornments. The biggest gaming news, reviews and hardware deals Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team. The super slim bezel of the 1600p screen makes the display a joy, too, and at 165 Hz it's plenty fast enough for any gaming enterprise. The RTX 4060 might be a tough match for that full resolution, however, but with the tight pixel pitch of a high-res 14-inch panel, knocking games back down to 1200p or flipping the upscaling switcheroo, you're not going to experience the slight blurring you can get on larger screens. For me, it's going to be a tough call on which laptop I take with me on my travels to CES in January, because the Ryzen AI HX 370 is a great, efficient chip in its own right—and capable of decent gaming performance away from the plug, which the RTX 4060 kinda isn't. But the other contender is the first Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite machine I've ever used in anger, the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge. That's something else which has impressed me this year, especially having spent six months using it as my work lappy. I've not experienced any real compatibility issues and haven't modified what I do because it's not an x86 machine. It's coped with everything but a severely tab-heavy Chrome load, at which point it falls to its knees and cries 'uncle!' I've also loved the Ryzen 7 9800X3D , but really it's more iterative than innovative considering AMD's 3D V-cache passim, so I would struggle to give that my pick of the year. Especially as I would have given the CPU nod to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D on my last go around the fiery orb. But still, it's this lovely little slab of affordable, unassuming gaming tech that has my heart in 2024. I am, however, hoping that I get to give the 2025 edition of this award to one fantastic graphics card from the slew of new GPUs set to land in our desktops from Nvidia, Intel, and AMD throughout the new year. C'mon, graphics peops, wow me. I'm done with mostly iterative, just a bit better, just a bit more expensive graphics silicon. I want something really new and exciting. If you want to find out who won the PC Gamer Hardware Awards, we'll be publishing the winners on New Year's Day.
