Sault mom Amanda Johnston — accompanied by Santa Claus — made Christmas merrier for children and their families at Sault Area Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and paediatric wing Monday. For 10 consecutive years, Johnston has delivered bags stuffed with Christmas gifts for children who are hospitalized and can't be at home with their families — along with gift cards for their parents who sit at their bedsides — at this special time of year. As in past years, the gifts were purchased with funds raised through the One Stop Christmas Show — a craft show and silent auction organized by Johnston — held this year Nov. 23 and 24 at Quattro Hotel & Conference Centre. The show raised nearly $8,000 this year. The shows have raised almost $80,000 over the past 10 years. “I received the list of children from the hospital earlier and then I went out shopping for them," Johnston told SooToday . "I shopped at Best Buy, Walmart and Giant Tiger over the past week and at 8 a.m. this morning." Johnston purchased Nintendo Switch gaming consoles, Leapsters, Princess toys, Teddy Bears, Fujifilm cameras, baby monitors, decorative blankets, diapers and other baby items and hundreds of dollars in gift cards for their parents from stores such as Walmart and gas stations. Johnston knows what the children and their parents are going through. "My own daughter Brooke was born at 25 weeks in November 2008 and she weighed a pound and 13 ounces," Johnston told SooToday in December 2015 . She was born here in the Sault but we can't treat babies that small in the Sault so we had to go out of town and we were away from home at Christmas. We spent 176 days in a NICU in London." Brooke is now 16. “She’s good,” Johnston said Monday when asked of her daughter’s condition. Johnston was accompanied by fellow Sault mom and friend Heather Hilderley-Phillips for the first seven years of Christmas shopping missions for sick children at SAH. “I’ve walked in their shoes,” Johnston said of parents watching over their children in hospital at Christmas. “I’ve been there. I understand what it feels like to be in a hospital with a child and away from your family. Some of these parents don’t live in the Sault and their families are far away and they’re not there to celebrate Christmas with them. The Government is undertaking a comprehensive review of existing policies and regulations to facilitate the effective implementation of the parole system and establish community correctional centres. The Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, in partnership with the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS), are working to implement the system that is outlined in the new Prisons and Correctional Service Act. President Mnangagwa recently reassured the ZPCS of continued Government support to enable the organisation to fulfil its constitutional mandate while officiating at a pass-out parade of correctional officers at Ntabazinduna Training School. The parole system initiative underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to transforming its prison system from one of punishment to one focused on rehabilitation and reintegration. Parole is the conditional release of prisoners before they complete their sentences. The new Act has provision for the establishment of the State Parole Board and sets conditions for early release from prison. The system needs ways of measuring how each prisoner considered for parole would have met the required conditions. An inmate can be released through a decision made by the President, the State Parole Board, the Commissioner General of Prisons, or the Minister responsible for Prisons and Correctional Services. The State Parole Board is authorised to release inmates on day parole. Some of the considerations for granting parole include whether an inmate has displayed meritorious conduct, self-discipline, responsibility and was industrious while in prison. Persons to be released early must not present undue risk to society when on parole, and their release must contribute to the rehabilitation and reintegration of the inmates into society as law-abiding citizens. In his address at the combined 154th and 155th recruit correctional officers’ courses pass-out parade held at ZPCS Ntabazinduna Training School recently, Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said that in liaison with ZPCS, the ministry is reviewing policies and regulations in line with the provisions of the new Act. “This will positively see the effective implementation of the parole system and establishment of community correctional centres, among other aspects. These programmes are crucial in advancing the reintegration process and also assisting in reducing overcrowding in correctional facilities,” he said. Minister Ziyambi added that ZPCS is leaving nothing to chance to address challenges faced by inmates and ex-inmates in their passage to reintegration into society. He said ZPCS has initiated a bid to facilitate the establishment of a foundation aimed at addressing these challenges. “Through stakeholder involvement, the foundation will provide support programmes and mobilise resources necessary for the successful implementation of reintegration initiatives. As a Ministry, we are fully behind this ingenuity and will ensure that the vision becomes a reality.” He noted that it was also vital to make concerted efforts and continue fostering regional collaboration among neighbouring correctional services to holistically enhance successful reintegration. “I, therefore, urge all correctional services in Africa to fully use the African Correctional Services Association in order to propel exchange programmes for mutual benefit towards successful reintegration. It is our belief that African problems should be solved by African solutions.” Speaking at the same ceremony, ZPCS Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu said the enactment of the new Act had empowered ZPCS to bolster its efforts in the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates. By focusing on rehabilitation over punishment, the new legislation aims to strengthen the furnishing of former inmates with the requisite skills and support for successful re-entry to society after serving their sentences, he said. “Reintegration is crucial not only for the personal growth of released inmates but also for enhancing public safety and reducing recidivism rates. When ex-offenders are provided with access to education, employment opportunities, and social services, they are more likely to become contributing members of society.” He noted that the holistic approach fosters a sense of belonging and encourages positive citizenship, ultimately strengthening the fabric of the nation. NEW YORK (AP) — More shoppers than ever are on track to use ‘buy now, pay later’ plans this holiday season, as the ability to spread out payments looks attractive at a time when Americans still feel the lingering effect of inflation and already have record-high credit card debt. The data firm Adobe Analytics predicts shoppers will spend 11.4% more this holiday season using buy now, pay later than they did a year ago. The company forecasts shoppers will purchase $18.5 billion worth of goods using the third-party services for the period Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, with $993 million worth of purchases on Cyber Monday alone. Buy now, pay later can be particularly appealing to consumers who have low credit scores or no credit history, such as younger shoppers, because most of the companies providing the service run only soft credit checks and don’t report the loans and payment histories to the credit bureaus, unlike credit card companies. This holiday season, buy now, pay later users can also feel more confident if a transaction goes awry. In May, the CFPB said buy now, pay later company must adhere to other regulations that govern traditional credit, such as providing ways to demand refunds and dispute transactions. To use a buy now, pay later plan, consumers typically sign up with bank account information or a debit or credit card, and agree to pay for purchases in monthly installments, typically over eight weeks or more. The loans are marketed as requiring no or low interest, or only conditional fees, such as for late payment. Klarna, Afterpay and Affirm are three of the biggest buy now, pay later companies. But consumer advocates warn that shoppers who sign up for the payment plans using a credit card can be hit with more interest and fees. That's because individuals open themselves up to interest on the credit card payment, if it's carried month to month, on top of any late fees, interest, or penalties from the buy now, pay later loan itself. Experts advise against using a credit card to pay for these plans for this reason. Consumer watchdogs also say the plans lead consumers to overextend themselves because, for example, not paying full price up front leaves, in the shopper’s mind at least, more money for smaller purchases . They also caution consumers to keep careful track of using multiple buy now, pay later services, as the automatic payments can add up, and there is no central reporting, such as with a credit card statement. “Buy now, pay later can be an innovative tool for purchases you’re going to make anyway,” said Mark Elliott, chief customer officer at financial services company LendingClub. “The challenge is that it does fuel overspending.” For merchants, that’s part of the appeal. Retailers have found that customers are more likely to have bigger cart sizes or to convert from browsing to checking out when buy now, pay later is offered. One report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York cited research that found customers spend 20% more when buy now, pay later is available. “The reality is that the increased cost-of-living and inflation have put more people in a situation where they’re already relying on revolving credit,” Elliott said. “The psychographics of ‘buy now, pay later’ may be different — people don’t think of it as debt — but it is.” If a consumer misses a payment, they can face fees, interest, or the possibility of being locked out of using the services in the future. Whether you're at home or in the gym, incorporating bodyweight movements into your upper body routine offers maximum flexibility and strengthening potential. This upper body circuit, which I designed utilizing my background as a strength and conditioning specialist, features a blend of compound exercises and isolation exercises that target all major muscle groups in the upper body, focusing on challenging the arms and shoulders , along with the chest and back. Compound movements — such as push-ups, plank shoulder taps, and the crab walk — work multiple muscle groups simultaneously, building overall strength and improving functional fitness. Meanwhile, isolated movements (or isolation exercises) like standing "Y," "T," and "I" shapes (YTI's) allow you to target smaller muscle groups in the upper back region. I also combined "push" exercises (targeting the chest, shoulders, and triceps) and "pull" exercises (focusing on the back and biceps) to create a balanced workout that helps reduce muscle imbalances.
