Researchers looked at information from a group of more than 12,000 adults in England aged 50 to 89 who were tracked over a 13-year period. At the start of the study, 8,225 adults had no mobility difficulty and did not use mobility assistive products (MAPs). Some 2,480 were deemed to have “unmet need” and 1,375 were using mobility aids. During the follow-up period, there were 2,313 “transitions” where people went from having no mobility issues to needing some help with getting around. And 1,274 people started to use mobility aids. Compared with men, women were 49% more likely to transition from not needing mobility aids to needing to use them, according to the study which has been published in The Lancet Public Health. But were 21% less likely to go on to use mobility aids when they needed them. The authors said their study showed “barriers to access” for women. For both men and women, with every year that passed during the study period the need for mobility aids increased. People who were older, less educated, less wealthy or reported being disabled were more likely to “transition from no need to unmet need, and from unmet need to use”, the authors said, with this indicating a “higher prevalence of mobility limitations and MAP need overall among these groups”. They added: “Finally, marital or partnership status was not associated with transitioning to unmet need; however, single people were more likely to transition from unmet need to use compared with married or partnered people.” Jamie Danemayer, first author of the study from UCL Computer Science and UCL’s Global Disability Innovation Hub, said: “Our analysis suggests that there is a clear gender gap in access to mobility aids. “Though our data didn’t ascertain the reason why participants weren’t using mobility aids, other research tells us that women are often more likely than men to face obstacles such as cost barriers as a result of well-documented income disparities between genders. “Many mobility aids are designed for men rather than women, which we think may be a factor. “Using mobility aids can also make a disability visible, which can impact the safety and stigma experienced by women, in particular. “There’s a critical need for further research to identify and break down the barriers preventing women from accessing mobility aids that would improve their quality of life.” Professor Cathy Holloway, also from UCL, added: “Not having access to mobility aids when a person needs one can have a big impact on their independence, well-being and quality of life. “Our analysis suggests that women, in particular, regardless of other factors such as education and employment status, are not getting the support that they need.” Professor Shereen Hussein, senior author of the study and lead of the social care group at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: “The research provides compelling evidence of gender disparities in accessing assistive technology, suggesting that cost, design bias, and social stigma are likely to disproportionally affect women. “This underscores the need for inclusive, gender-sensitive approaches in the design, production and inclusivity of assistive technologies.”FBI director says he intends to resign at end of Joe Biden’s term

Mr Wray’s intended resignation is not unexpected considering that Mr Trump had picked Mr Patel for the role in his new administration. Mr Wray had previously been named by Mr Trump and began the 10-year term — a length meant to insulate the agency from the political influence of changing administrations — in 2017, after Mr Trump fired then-FBI director James Comey. BLOOMINGTON — Residents of the City of Bloomington Township at risk of eviction or disconnection who may not be eligible for the township's general assistance programs may have another lifeline. On Monday, Bloomington Township's Board of Trustees voted to reinstate the Housing Eviction Relief Efforts program, which would offer up to $150,000 for rent, mortgage or utility assistance through the end of the township's fiscal year. Under the Illinois Township Code, a township is authorized to expend funds for matters related to public safety, health and social services for those in need . And Bloomington Township has existing reserves in its general fund for such matters. Bloomington Township Supervisor Deb Skillrud and the township's board determined inflation and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic have created significant and unintended consequences for township residents who may not qualify for existing assistance programs. Skillrud Skillrud said in the wake of the pandemic, her office saw a number of clients with a large amount of overdue payments even after receiving emergency assistance. This prompted the township to create the COVID Emergency Relief Program in 2021, which has now become known as the Housing Emergency Relief Efforts program, or HERE. The township had been setting aside $150,000 for the program and had provided about half of that amount in fiscal 2023. But when it was made available from December 2023 to March 2024, the entire budget was used. "The need was there, and it showed because we maxed out the amounts," Skillrud said. However, the program was paused this fiscal year once Community Service Block Grant funding became available for these at-risk individuals through Mid Central Community Action. But once that funding ran dry, the township decided to reintroduce the HERE program using reserves from its general fund. Eligible township residents must have a minimum 30 days of documented income at the date of submission of their application, be at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, hold a government-issued ID card for valid driver's license, be financially unable to alleviate a life-threatening circumstance which places the individual or family at risk of homelessness. For “Hysteria!” actresses Anna Camp and Julie Bowen, horror is harder than comedy. “Horror is really hard actually because there is a fine line you have to walk; you have to make it feel grounded and you’re put in these extreme circumstances: You’re being possessed or pulled through the air, there’s nothing you can do to relate to that,” explained Camp of “Pitch Perfect” fame. “With comedy, you can have a relatable situation and go, ‘I’ve been in situations like that.’ There’s nothing you can compare (horror) to, so you have to use your imagination. I find it harder. Your imagination goes home with you at the end of the day. You’re still thinking crazy thoughts.” Bowen, best known for playing Claire Dunphy on “Modern Family,” agreed. “Comedy’s pretty binary because it’s like either you can make people laugh or you don’t. I can’t watch horror. I’m terrified, terrified! I am the easiest scare in the world, so as far as doing (horror), I want to make it as real as possible. The same goes for Bruce and for Anna. We didn’t ask anyone to give us a flavor of the thing they did before. We cast people we loved so much (in their famous projects) that we wanted to give them the opportunity to do the exact opposite.” Added Bowen: “I got this script and was like, ‘Oh great. She’s a mom. How fun.’ I love moms. I’m a mom, but I felt this was not worth flying out of town to Georgia and being away from my kids. It’s fun to just stretch again and do things I haven’t done in a while, which I found really exciting.” Kane said he felt lucky Bowen signed on at the beginning. “She was the first adult actor to sign on. Trump shocked the nation last week when he chose Gaetz to lead the Justice Department. The Florida Republican was a surprise pick, given his limited experience as a lawyer and because he was the subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation that concluded after the Biden administration declined to bring charges in 2022. Gaetz's nomination was controversial with members of both sides of the aisle and brought renewed attention to the House Ethics Committee investigation into the allegations of sexual abuse and illicit drug use against him. The Republican members of the panel voted to block the release of its report on Wednesday. What happened to Gaetz's nomination? CNN said Gaetz's decision to remove himself from consideration came within an hour after the network reached out to him for comment on new reporting. According to CNN , the woman who claims she had sex with Gaetz as a minor told the ethics committee that she had not one but two sexual encounters with him, the second time including an adult woman. Gaetz said in his announcement that he was withdrawing because his confirmation had "unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition." In a statement responding to the news, Trump said he "greatly appreciated" Gaetz's recent efforts and that he respected him for not wanting to be a "distraction for the Administration." The president-elect will now have to select someone else to lead the Justice Department. Is Todd Blanche next up? A favorite to replace Gaetz as the attorney general nominee is Todd Blanche, Trump's personal defense lawyer. Blanche, who famously represented the president-elect during his Manhattan criminal hush-money trial, has already been nominated by Trump as the new deputy attorney general. So, elevating Trump from the second-ranking DOJ official to the top of the chain could be a natural move. In the hush-money trial, Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in a scheme to conceal payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the days leading up to the 2016 presidential election in exchange for her silence about an alleged 2006 sexual encounter. Prior to joining Trump's legal team, Blanche was a federal prosecutor well experienced in white-collar defense cases. After earning his doctor of law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 2003, he joined New York's Southern District, helping to lead the violent crimes unit. He later joined Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, where he became a partner and represented Paul Manafort , a former Trump campaign chairman who was sentenced to prison for various financial crimes, and Igor Fruman, an associate of former Trump lawyer and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani . As deputy attorney general, Blanche would manage the department's day-to-day functions and serve as an adviser to the attorney general. Emil Bove, who played the other central role in the hush-money case, was chosen as the next principal associate deputy attorney general, and John Sauer, who successfully represented Trump before the U.S. Supreme Court in the presidential immunity case, has been selected as solicitor general. But while Blanche is being viewed by politicos as the next AG, Polymarket, the predictive betting website funded in part by early Trump backer Peter Thiel , does not have Blanche as the front-runner. Blanche has a 27 percent chance of becoming the next attorney general, according to the platform, his odds dropping from 32 percent right after Gaetz's announcement. Who else is in the running for AG? Jay Clayton, who served as the chairman of the Securities Exchange Commission during the first Trump administration, is the top pick on Polymarket with a 47 percent chance of being tapped as the next attorney general. Less than a week ago, Trump announced that he would nominate Clayton to be the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. Polymarket gives Bailey a 16 percent chance of becoming the next attorney general. Lee has a 14 percent chance of replacing Gaetz, according to the betting platform. The senator was one of the top names for attorney general before Gaetz's nomination. Lee worked closely with Trump in the wake of his 2020 election loss, having voiced in text messages to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows that he offered his "unequivocal support for you to exhaust every legal and constitutional remedy at your disposal." Paxton is also close to the president-elect, having accompanied Trump in the courtroom during his trial in New York and waged an unsuccessful challenge to Trump's 2020 loss in four battleground states. Trump first floated Paxton as his attorney general in May, when he called the Texas Republican "a very talented guy" whom he would consider to lead the DOJ during a second Trump administration. The good news for Real Madrid is that they are undoubtedly good enough to win any of their remaining games, even if Atalanta surprisingly snuck into the top eight and Brest are not far behind in 11th. The bad news is that the reigning European champions are not playing like a heavyweight, and they need to figure out how to fix that in order to actually capitalize on the opportunity in front of them. Panic level: 7/10 Manchester City Remaining schedule (all times U.S./Eastern): Dec. 11, 3 p.m.: Juventus vs. Manchester City Jan. 22, 3 p.m.: Paris Saint-Germain vs. Manchester City Jan. 29, 3 p.m.: Manchester City vs. Club Brugge Manchester City are doing slightly better than Real Madrid with eight points, but the situation is awfully similar – the 2023 champions have the ability to beat anyone but certainly are not playing like it. Unlike Madrid, though, City's remaining schedule is full of some obvious challenges. Juventus have conceded just five goals this season, which could make things difficult for an increasingly stifled City offense, while Paris Saint-Germain's desperation for points could make their Matchday 7 meeting interesting. Pep Guardiola and company have enough to dig themselves out of this hole, but they are really going to need to prove it with three games left in the league phase. They were arguably dealt the worst hand after being signed up to face Arsenal, Bayern and Manchester City in the league phase, but there have been few positives to take from this season so far in the Champions League. They have just one victory in five, doing little to inspire confidence in Luis Enrique's post-Kylian Mbappe rebuild, even in the one game they won. They can still turn things around and find a spot in the top 24, but they have no points to waste with three games to go and so the games against RB Salzburg and Stuttgart are essentially must-wins. PSG, though, might also need to hope that City's form continues for another two months because they might need something out of that crucial game, too. Panic level: 9/10

While opposing defenses have keyed in on Metcalf, other aspects of Seattle's offense have surfaced during its four-game winning streak. The run has the Seahawks (8-5) sitting atop the NFC West heading into Sunday night's game against the visiting Green Bay Packers (9-4). Geno Smith's new top target is second-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who needs 89 receiving yards for his first career 1,000-yard season. Smith-Njigba has 75 catches for 911 yards and five touchdowns, while Metcalf, often dealing with double coverage, has 54 catches for 812 yards and two scores. Metcalf says he feels the pride of a “proud parent or a big brother” when it comes to Smith-Njigba's success. Seattle's offense also got a boost from the ground game in a 30-18 victory over the Arizona Cardinals last weekend . Zach Charbonnet, filling in for the injured Kenneth Walker III, ran for a career-best 134 yards and two touchdowns. The Seahawks face another hot team in the Packers (9-4), who have won seven of nine. Green Bay's two losses over that stretch have come against NFC-best Detroit (12-1), including a 34-31 victory by the Lions on Dec. 5, which means the NFC North title is likely out of reach for the Packers. The Packers are well-positioned for a playoff berth, but that almost certainly won't come this weekend. They would need a win, a loss or tie by the Atlanta Falcons and a tie between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers. Metcalf, who learned to block from his father, former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Terrence Metcalf, says he tries to take blocking seriously to set himself apart from other receivers. His priorities are simple when he's getting double-teamed and the ball goes elsewhere. “Trying to block my (butt) off and trying to get pancakes on defensive backs,” he said. When the Packers surged their way into the playoffs last season, quarterback Jordan Love was a major reason why. He had 18 touchdown passes and one interception during Green Bay's final eight games. During the last four games of this season, Love ranks third in the NFL with a 118.9 passer rating with six touchdowns, one interception and a league-best 10.3 yards per attempt. “I always feel like I can put the ball where I want to — and that’s part of it, too, having that confidence to be able to throw those passes,” Love said. “There’s always like I said a handful of plays that might not come off or be in the exact spot that you wanted it to or the throw might be a little bit off. So, that’s where you’ve just got to try to be at your best every play, be consistent and accurate as possible.” Green Bay’s pass defense has been picked apart the last two weeks. First, it was torched by Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins in a Packers win. Next, it allowed Jared Goff to complete his final 13 passes as the Lions rallied to victory. It won’t get any easier this week. Smith is second in the NFL in attempts, completions and passing yards and is fifth in completion percentage. “It’s been a remarkable turnaround for him in terms of just where he started,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “It’s not always where you start, but where you finish. And it tells me a lot about the person in terms of his resiliency and ability to fight through some adversity. He’s a dangerous quarterback.” The potential return of former All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) could help the Packers. Will the Packers break out their head-to-toe white uniforms?
