WITH ONLY A few days left until the General Election, key issues such as housing, healthcare and the cost of living are likely to continue to dominate the discourse. It is well known that voters are concerned mostly with the issues that affect them personally. Recent figures show that approximately people now work remotely at least some of the time. This represents just over , meaning that remote work is at the forefront of the electorate’s minds now more than ever. Since the last General Election in 2020, remote working has become an essential part of modern working life, offering numerous social, economic and environmental benefits. It has empowered employees by providing greater flexibility, improved work-life balance, and access to more opportunities, especially for those living in rural areas or those with caregiving responsibilities. People can have great jobs, working for global companies, while living in every community in Ireland. Furthermore, remote work aligns with key environmental goals by reducing commuter traffic and carbon emissions, which are critical for Ireland’s climate action plans. While remote working became a necessity during the Covid-19 pandemic, it has now proven to be a viable and sustainable option for many industries. To ensure the long-term success of this model, we need strong political leadership that will support its continuation and growth. Yet for such a transformative force, the political discourse surrounding remote work feels underwhelming, especially given its prominence during the pandemic. After years of experimentation with remote and hybrid work, the question now isn’t whether it works: it’s how to integrate it equitably and sustainably, and to unlock social, economic and environmental benefits for individuals, employers and local communities. Ireland can be the best place in the world to work remotely but this will not happen by itself. The recently published election manifestos give an indication of how important each party views remote work as a key issue at this time. Election manifestos need to be all encompassing documents and, with this in mind, any mention of remote work tells us how high up this list of priorities it sits from each Party’s perspective. Here is a summary of the mentions of remote work in each manifesto, looking at the current Government Parties first: In , under its plans for rural communities, says that it will support initiatives to facilitate remote working, to foster regional enterprise growth, and to enhance community structures. includes remote work as they propose continued support to the Connected Hubs network. These hubs, which have gained traction in rural communities, offer the social and professional benefits of a shared workspace. The party also talks about promoting flexible working arrangements that benefit both workers and employers. presents a worker-focused approach. That party’s proposal to simplify and expand remote working tax credits directly addresses a key concern for employees – cost. By making remote work financially attractive and accessible, they position it as part of a broader push for sustainable living. The Greens commit to funding remote working hubs and expanding the right to request remote and flexible work. are the only non-government party to say anything substantive about remote working in their manifesto. They frame remote work as a tool for transformative social, economic and environmental change. They emphasise support for co-working spaces as localised centres of innovation and connectivity. Interestingly, there is no mention of significance in the manifestos of any of the other parties, that we can find. Could this omission reflect a miscalculation of the importance of this issue? As for smaller parties, their silence on the matter suggests they have yet to recognise remote work’s potential as a lever for positive change, both socially and environmentally. While remote work might not grab headlines like housing or healthcare, its implications ripple through nearly every major policy area. For rural Ireland, it brings a new vibrancy. For urban Ireland, it’s a solution to overburdened infrastructure. For workers, it’s the promise of flexibility, cost savings, and improved well-being — just ask anyone sitting in the relentless gridlocked traffic in this country if they wish there was another way. And for the environment, remote working a tangible way to reduce carbon emissions. Irish voters may not view remote work as an election-defining issue but with , new policy and investment will affect how they live their lives. The pandemic has reshaped expectations, with workers across the country now . As political parties vie for votes, they must recognise that remote work isn’t just a policy issue; it’s a lens through which voters view broader questions of fairness, opportunity and sustainability. Failure to address it convincingly could mean missing a key opportunity to connect with an electorate seeking meaningful change. Whatever happens on Friday, the incoming Government brings an opportunity to solidify remote work’s place in Ireland’s future. While Donald Trump’s lock on the white evangelical vote is legendary, he and his campaign allies also wooed smaller religious groups, far from the mainstream. As it turned out, Trump won by decisive margins, but his campaign aggressively courted niche communities with the understanding that every vote could be critical, particularly in swing states. Voter surveys such as exit polls, which canvass broad swaths of the electorate, aren’t able to gauge the impact of such microtargeting, but some backers say the effort was worth it. Just one week before the election, Trump directed a post on the social-media platform X to Coptic Christians in the United States —- whose church has ancient roots in Egypt. He saluted their “Steadfast Faith in God, Perseverance through Centuries of Persecution and Love for this Great Country.” “This was the first time seeing a major U.S. presidential candidate address the community in this manner,” said Mariam Wahba, a Coptic Christian and research analyst with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington-based research institute. “It was really a profound moment.” She said many Copts share the conservative social views of other Christian groups in the Republican constituency, and they may already have been Trump supporters. But the posting reinforced those bonds. Coptic bishops sent the president-elect congratulations after his victory and cited their “shared social and family values.” Some Assyrian Christians — another faith group with Middle Eastern roots — similarly bonded with Trump, whose mispronunciation of “Assyrian” at a rally created a viral video moment and drew attention to their support. Darmo also credited Massad Boulos, father-in-law to Trump’s daughter Tiffany, for mobilizing various Middle Eastern Christian groups, including Chaldean Catholics, and other voters, particularly in Michigan, such as Muslims. “He brought all these minority groups together,” he said. “We’re hoping to continue that relationship.” But members of Middle Eastern-rooted Christian groups, and their politics, are far from monolithic, said Marcus Zacharia, founder of Progressive Copts, a program of Informed Immigrants, an organization that promotes dialogue on sensitive topics among such groups in the United States and Canada. He said many younger community members question Trump’s stances on issues such as immigration, and sense that conservatives sometimes tokenize them by focusing on the plight of persecuted Christians in the Middle East while neglecting wider issues of repression in countries there that the U.S. supports. He said there needs to be more informed dialogue across the political divide in these communities. “There is no more high time than these next four years to have that way of conducting conversations,” he said. Republicans also made an aggressive push for Amish voters , particularly in the swing state of Pennsylvania, where they are most numerous at about 92,000 (many below voting age). The GOP has made similar efforts in the past, even though researchers have found that less than 10% of them typically vote, due to their separatism from society. But Republicans used billboards, mailers, ads and door-to-door campaigner to drive turnout in Lancaster County, home base to the nation’s largest Amish settlement. On Election Day, Amish voters Samuel Stoltzfus and his wife Lillian Stoltzfus said they were supporting Trump, citing their anti-abortion beliefs. “We basically look at it as murder,” Stoltzfus, 31, said outside a polling center in the Lancaster County community of New Holland, where dozens of other members of the local Amish community voted. Trump has wavered on the issue, dismaying some abortion opponents, though many have said Republicans still align more closely to their views. Stolzfus added: “Make America great again and keep the moral values,” he said. “Let’s go back to the roots.” Steven Nolt, a history professor at Elizabethtown College in Lancaster College who studies the Amish and their voting patterns, said that while it’s too early to say definitively without further research, he doesn’t see evidence of a larger turnout this year. Lancaster County as a whole — most of which is not Amish — is a GOP stronghold that Trump won handily, though both parties’ votes edged up from 2020, according to unofficial results posted by the Pennsylvania Department of State. Trump’s biggest increases were in urban or suburban areas with few Amish, while some areas with larger Amish populations generally saw a modest increase in the Trump vote, said Nolt, director of the college’s Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. “Bottom line, percentage-wise, not much change in the parts of Lancaster County where the Amish live,” he said. Lowell Hawthorne’s commitment to education was recalled during a fundraising event bearing his name on November 14 in New Rochelle, New York. Beneficiaries are students in the Caribbean and United States. The third Lowell F Hawthorne Foundation Gala took place at Glen Island Harbour Club. It attracted members of the Jamaican Diaspora and community leaders who celebrated the legacy of Hawthorne, a businessman who co-founded the popular Golden Krust Restaurant chain. He died in 2017 at age 57. Lorna Hawthorne, his widow, established the Foundation seven years ago to uphold her husband’s determination to assist students struggling to pay college tuition. She told the Jamaica Observer that the galas have raised over US$200,000. “While we can’t put an exact number on how many students will benefit, our goal is to support as many students as possible in a meaningful and impactful way. We have to continue partnering with schools and institutions that have different requirements and thresholds, but we remain committed to maximising our impact and providing opportunities for students in both America and the Caribbean,” said Mrs Hawthorne. Throughout the evening, attendees participated in raffles and a silent auction, bidding on exclusive items. Proceeds go to the Foundation’s scholarship programmes. Four persons were also honoured. The blocky sandstone cliffs of the Wunaamin Miliwundi Range along the Hunter River are creased with fault lines and cracks, like the wrinkles in a well-aged face. And fair enough too; these are some of the oldest rocks in the Kimberley at 1.8 billion years. They’ve seen some changes on this planet, including the evolution of multi-cellular life, and now they’re radiating a vibrant orange in the late afternoon. Credit: Getty Images This river harbours living dinosaurs and from the edge of my rubber Zodiac I watch as one fearsome saltwater crocodile juggles a fish down its scaly throat. There’s a violent eruption of splashes and fins as sharks catch a snack, while a brahminy kite, its white head contrasting its chestnut body, swoops on a crab. Spotting a larger Zodiac bobbing in the harbour, we notice those onboard are beckoning to us. On approach, we see it’s none other than our own Captain Erwan Le Rouzic, along with three others of our ship’s top brass. Two inflatable crocodiles are strapped to their bow, and as we pull up alongside, the captain thrusts a plastic flute of chilled champagne into my sweaty hand. Living dinosaurs ... the river is a haven for saltwater crocs. Credit: Getty Images It’s as unexpected as it is welcome, and we passengers all laugh that we feel like rock stars. And we’d better get used to it. This crazy juxtaposition of luxury in a prehistoric wilderness is a hallmark of my cruise on Scenic Eclipse II, an 11-day Kimberley journey between Broome and Darwin. The newest ship for Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours, Scenic Eclipse II launched in 2023 and is almost identical to Scenic Eclipse, launched in 2019. Previously the company has focused on river cruising, but this year founder Glen Moroney has sent ships to his home country, Australia. The Scenic Eclipse ships are touted as Discovery Yachts, and there certainly is a superyacht vibe. A fellow passenger says that if James Bond had a yacht, it would look like this, with a fleet of speedy Zodiacs and two jet-black helicopters. Each spacious suite has a verandah and all come with a private butler, so everyone here is a VIP. Scenic Eclipse II ... rugged wilderness meets polished luxury. Scenic Eclipse II has plenty of cutting-edge maritime technology. According to Le Rouzic, this ship uses 30 per cent less fuel than other ships of comparable size. To reduce the environmental impact of disposable plastic, there are refillable amenity bottles and guests are provided with re-usable drink bottles. For the captain, one of the best things about this ship is its size. With a maximum of 228 passengers, this vessel makes for easy personal connections. “Something I don’t really like much is that cruise ships are getting bigger and bigger,” Le Rouzic says, adding that he once captained a ship of 2000 passengers. “The ships have tripled and quadrupled since then. It’s to the point that the guests may forget they are even on a ship!” On this cruise, the only time I forget I’m on a ship is when I’m dining like a celebrity. We may be in the wilderness, but sublime meals, from casual to degustation, are created by 38 chefs in nine kitchens. Overseeing them is Tom Goetter, vice president of oceans hotel operations for Scenic, himself a celebrity chef, having appeared on US television’s reality series, Top Chef: World All-Stars . Off-ship Kimberley experiences via Zodiacs are astonishing. Goetter’s own onboard restaurant is the invitation-only Chef’s Table, seating just 10 guests for 10 experimental courses paired with a flight of 10 international wines. Goetter hands each of us a mini tool kit, explaining each course requires our participation. Highlights include a burrito “cigar” dipped in dehydrated vegetable “ash”, and spraying vinegar onto the fairy floss surrounding a foie gras toffee apple. Not only is the food exceptional, but the staff cannot do enough for us, soon learning our names and dining preferences. In the Azure Cafe, a guest is handed a pastry and cappuccino. “I didn’t order that,” he says, “but I was going to!” Evenings bring plenty of entertainment. A guitarist provides atmosphere in the bar, and two vocalists deliver toe-tapping concerts in the theatre and even on the moonlit heli-deck. For mine, the Discovery Team of 14 science and history guides (known by the more show-biz sounding “Disco Team”) steals the show. We appreciate the power and wonder of the Horizontal Falls. Each night we’re entertained with relevant mini-lectures, such as the marine biology of the Kimberley or Indigenous rock art. Leader Mike Cusack entertains with briefings about the next day’s adventures. Turns out, Cusack himself is a bona fide rock star. In 1987, Cusack and wife Susan spent a year living virtually unassisted in the remote Kimberley as the “Wilderness Couple” for Australian Geographic . Cusack delivers a lecture on their trials and tribulations, and I’m left awestruck. Not all of us fancy a year in the wilderness, though we relish a couple of hours, and our off-ship experiences are gobsmacking. At the Horizontal Falls, we board the Zodiacs to feel the power of the 11-metre tides forcing seawater through a narrow gap in an upthrust ridgeline. Unlike larger tour boats that zoom through the falls, we’re simply appreciating the wonder of this place, and slowly touring Cyclone Creek, where eddies and buckled strata speak of the forces at play. At Montgomery Reef we’re up early to accommodate the whims of the tide. We chug through natural drainage channels as water cascades off this living coral structure, which stands almost five metres proud of the surface at low tide. Before us, turtles take a breath, tawny nurse sharks skitter and egrets gobble stranded fish. Less than two hours later as our ship glides onwards, the reef has disappeared, swallowed by the tide. Montgomery Reef ... water cascades off this living coral structure. As we cruise, we see no towns and few boats. But people are here, and have always been, and it’s a privilege to witness Indigenous culture first-hand. At Wijingarra Butt Butt (Freshwater Cove) we land on Worrorra country to meet the Dambimangari traditional owners. Gideon Mowaljarlai tells us the legend of the spotted quoll and welcomes us with a dab of ochre each on the face. We hike up to Cyclone Cave, a rocky overhang adorned with Wandjina style art, where Neil Maru points out images of stingrays, giant dragonflies, night jars and the spiderweb-like cyclone itself. Traditional owners cannot always be on-site, and at Swift Bay, our own Disco Team reads out information from the Wunambal Gaambera people. In this special cave, surrounded by a vast shell midden, the ethereal Wandjina, the wide-eyed, mouthless creation beings, have peered from the walls and ceilings for millennia. The Disco Team have laid tarps under the overhang. On my back, I stare up in silence, lingering to untangle layers of rock wallabies, mythological monsters and human hand stencils. It’s a spiritual place, and there are human remains, tucked into a crevice. At Jar Island, we find the Gwion Gwion art, sometimes called Bradshaw art. We leave hats and backpacks outside the chasm, lest they damage the walls. Slender figures are depicted with tasselled headdresses and dilly bags, a window to ancient history. When our guides explain these images are at least 17,300 years old, it’s a goosebumps moment. The Disco Team interprets these sites with such deep respect, doing the traditional owners proud. A scenic heli flight is a Kimberley highlight. The following morning I join a beach excursion of a different kind, stepping into a Zodiac full of exercise mats and would-be yogis. As an osprey looks on, we go through our downward dogs to the chattering of terns, and I wonder whether any non-Indigenous humans have stood here before. Before finishing in Darwin, the Kimberley has a final highlight. Rising from the deck in a H130 helicopter in the early morning sunshine, I behold the twin King George Falls plummeting 80 metres to the tidal gorge below. As the chopper circles back along this roadless coastline, I spot crocodiles and turtles in the turquoise waters. The adventure doesn’t end there. Next, I’m zipping upstream in a Zodiac between towering cliffs. Approaching the falls themselves, we pack cameras and outer clothing into a waterproof bag, before chugging in slow motion into the hammering waterfall. I hear myself scream, and it’s not just the cold. Thoroughly drenched yet laughing with other guests, I realise I’m not a rock star after all. I’m a tiny speck on this planet whose biggest thrill is to be in this boat, under a waterfall, touching the wild. For me, this is the best luxury of all.
