PINTS could be scrapped for smaller glasses if a Labour law is passed unchecked, warn MPs. The Product Regulation Bill aims to review booze measures — and a Tory peer fears it may be abused by a future nanny-state government. Ex-Minister Lord Sharpe last night urged fellow peers to back his amendment to the Product Regulation Bill and last night. He said: “It is not difficult to imagine, at some point in the future, that the office of Secretary of State is held by a metric maniac. “Or perhaps worse, some interfering busybody who decides that they know what is better for the health of the nation than those who make up the population of the nation." He warned the pint may even be replaced by the smaller Aussie schooner — “an abomination of a vessel, marginally too large for a sensible sherry but far too small for a sensible beer.” READ MORE ON ALCOHOL Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffith said: “We should have pride in pints, not sink them by stealth.” The Government said: “Pints of draught beer and cider remain part of our national identity. We have no plans to change this.” In October The Sun reported that San Miguel had taken the crown as Britain's favourite pint. Thanks to its 61 per cent "popularity score", the Spanish lager pipped Guinness to the top spot. Most read in The Sun Brewed by American company AB InBev, it's also the largest selling beer in the Philippines and Hong Kong and is loved by Brits. Kopparberg ranked joint-third (51 per cent) along with Thatchers Gold and Strongbow. The New England Patriots have a busy offseason ahead. Eliot Wolf and the rest of the front office will be expected to address several areas of need, . Protecting their prized young quarterback Drake Maye is paramount. While , it won't matter if the third-overall draft pick can't get the ball to his top targets. New England can't afford to enter the 2025 season with the same offensive line woes that have haunted them throughout Maye's rookie campaign. Fortunately, the Patriots should have some enticing options to bolster their o-line next spring whether it's -- -- or free agency. The latter could be tougher since the top tackles are typically extended before they hit the open market. Nevertheless, here are the top offensive tackles scheduled to become free agents in 2025 that the Patriots should have their eyes on: 31 Stanley has spent his entire nine-year career in Baltimore, where he earned Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro nods in 2019. He's in the midst of a bounce-back campaign and has set himself up for a lucrative contract in free agency. Pro Football Focus ranks him 16th among all NFL tackles with an 80.6 pass-blocking grade. 27 Jackson reaching free agency would be a surprise. He's in his prime as the youngest tackle on this list. Rarely in this day and age do tackles of his caliber not get signed to extensions. If he does hit the open market, he should be near the top of the Patriots' list of targets. 34 Smith played 13 seasons in Dallas before signing with the New York Jets last offseason. That deal didn't work out for New York as the team recently placed Smith on injured reserve, effectively ending his disappointing campaign. Now, the eight-time Pro Bowler has reached a crossroads in his illustrious career. If he decides to play in 2025 and can stay healthy, he'd be a solid upgrade over any current option on the Pats roster. 33 Bolles has thrived as Denver's starting left tackle since his rookie 2017 season. A team captain, his age 32 campaign has arguably been his best yet. If the Broncos make the mistake of letting him walk, the Patriots should be all over him in free agency. 29 Robinson reportedly at the 2024 trade deadline, but the Jacksonville Jaguars opted to ship him to the Minnesota Vikings. He'd undoubtedly be an upgrade, but he'd hardly be reliable. Robinson has played only one full season since the Jaguars drafted him in 2017. He has missed an alarming number of games either due to injuries or suspensions. That said, the talent is undeniable. 34 Moses has primarily played right tackle in his 11-year NFL career but if the Patriots want an upgrade on the other side of the line, he'd be the most appealing option. The veteran has been among the league's most steady linemen since entering the league in 2014. The Patriots should prioritize protecting Maye's blindside, but pairing Moses with a stud left tackle would be the ideal situation.
Ohio State, Michigan players involved in postgame scuffleSenate begins final push to expand Social Security benefits for millions of peopleAn energized SMU squad will carry a three-game winning streak against up-and-down Virginia in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for each team on Saturday in Dallas. The game is the first for the Mustangs' basketball team as a member of one of the nation's perennial powerhouse leagues, but don't expect SMU (7-2) to wilt in the spotlight. The Mustangs lambasted Alabama State 101-72 on Tuesday in their most recent outing. Their two losses came against Butler on the road by 11 points and against Mississippi State at home by five. Kario Oquendo poured in a season-high 20 points to lead seven SMU scorers in double figures in the win over Alabama State. Matt Cross added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs while Samet Yigitoglu and Chuck Harris scored 12 points apiece. Yohan Traore and B.J. Edwards each had 11 and Jerrell Colbert hit for 10. "I think it's finally getting to the point where we are starting to figure out how to play as a team," Oquendo said. "You can see it from game to game. We're getting better, and every practice, we're getting better. I believe the more games we play together, the more the things start coming together." SMU is second in scoring per game in the ACC (averaging 88.3 points) and assists per game (16.4). The Mustangs lead the ACC in rebound margin (plus-10.9), total rebound average (43.3 per game) and offensive rebounds (15.2 a game) -- all in all, an impressive start to their campaign. Boopie Miller is the SMU leader in scoring average (15.6 points per game) and assists (5.8), with Cross the top rebounder (7.5 per game). The Cavaliers (5-3) head to Dallas after an 87-69 loss at No. 13 Florida on Wednesday in the SEC/ACC Challenge. Elijah Saunders scored 19 points for Virginia while Isaac McKneely added 12 points -- all on 3-pointers. The Cavaliers, however, had no answer for the Florida defense, committing 15 turnovers that led to 20 points for the Gators. Virginia led 18-9 early but were down by four at halftime. They got to within a point after a deep basket by Saunders in the opening minute of the second half, but that was as close as the Cavaliers would come. "Overall, I was very, very pleased with the first half," Virginia interim coach Ron Sanchez said. "I think that we handled adversity well. This group is on its way of becoming who they're going to be. It's painful growth, but you grow nonetheless." McKneely leads the Cavaliers with 13.1 points per game, followed by Saunders at 10.3. Jacob Cofie is the top rebounder at 6.4 per game, while Andrew Rohde has a team-best average of three assists. The teams have met just once before, with the Cavaliers outlasting SMU 76-73 in the semifinals of the Corpus Christi Challenge on Nov. 29, 2013. --Field Level Media

Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia was voted the top newcomer on Wednesday while the Gamecocks' Shane Beamer is coach of the year in voting by the panel of 17 media members who cover the league. Sampson led the SEC and set school records by rushing for 1,485 yards and 22 touchdowns. He is tied for third nationally in rushing touchdowns, recording the league's fifth-most in a season. Sampson was chosen on all but two ballots. Mississippi wide receiver Tre Harris and his quarterback, Jaxson Dart, each got a vote. Kennard led the SEC with 11-1/2 sacks and 15-1/2 tackles for loss. He also had 10 quarterback hurries and forced three fumbles. Beamer led the Gamecocks to just their fifth nine-win season, including a school-record four wins over Top 25 opponents. He ran for another 716 yards and six touchdowns, directing an upset of Alabama. AMES, Iowa — Matt Campbell, who led Iowa State to its first 10-win season and became the program's all-time leader in coaching victories, has agreed to an eight-year contract that would keep him with the Cyclones through 2032. University president Wendy Wintersteen and athletic director Jamie Pollard made the announcement Wednesday, four days after the Cyclones lost to Arizona State in the Big 12 championship game. “Given all the uncertainty currently facing college athletics, it was critical that we moved quickly to solidify the future of our football program,” Pollard said. “Matt is the perfect fit for Iowa State University and I am thrilled he wants to continue to lead our program. The Cyclones won their first seven games for their best start since 1938 and are 10-3 heading into their game against Miami in the Pop Tarts Bowl in Orlando, Florida, on Dec. 28. BRIEFLY FLAG PLANT: Ohio Republican state Rep. Josh Williams said Wednesday on social media he's introducing a bill to make flag planting in sports a felony in the state. His proposal comes after the Nov. 30 fight at the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry football game when the Wolverines beat the Buckeyes 13-10 and then attempted to plant their flag at midfield. MALZAHN: Gus Malzahn, who resigned as UCF’s coach last month to become Mike Norvell’s offensive coordinator at Florida State, said he chose to return to his coaching roots rather than remain a head coach distracted by a myriad of responsibilities. Ruben Amorim says he’s close to knowing his best Manchester United line-up. Appointed following the sacking of Erik ten Hag in late October, the Portuguese tactician officially started work as United’s head coach on November 11, 2024 and has overseen four games across all competitions since. His debut game in the dugout ended in a 1-1 draw away at Ipswich Town which was followed up by back-to-back home wins over Bodo/Glimt - in the Europa League - and the 4-0 thrashing of Everton . More recently though, Amorim tasted defeat for the first time as Man United boss as his side were beaten 2-0 by Arsenal on Wednesday night . What was interesting about the game in North London, certainly before kick-off was the visitors’ starting line-up as Amorim continued his theme of heavy squad rotation as he looks to manage his players' workloads and hand minutes to those who have recently returned from injury. And after plenty of experimenting, the 39-year-old has revealed he is getting closer to knowing the ideal line-up for his 3-4-2-1 system. "More or less [I am close to knowing my best line-up], yes," he told reporters. "You have an idea, but then you have the problem of players returning without training and then you have to manage the load. So you also have the same problem. "But then you have to imagine and understand what kind of player you have. Bruno Fernandes, you feel it, against Arsenal, in the end, he was a little bit tired, but you know he is going to recover very well. “Manuel Ugarte, I've known for so long; I know that he needs sometimes a little bit more time. "So we are in that process, to know the players and trying to manage that, but we're getting closer to an idea, yes." Plenty of eyes will be on Amorim’s team selection for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest especially with Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo available again after suspension .NFL world reacts with excitement, surprise, questions after Bill Belichick is hired to coach UNC
Romanian politicians have voted in favour of a new pro-European coalition government led by incumbent Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. The move could usher in an end to a protracted political crisis in the European Union country following the annulment of a presidential election by a top court. Parliament approved the new administration in a 240-143 vote in Romania’s 466-seat legislature. The new coalition is made up of the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD) the centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL), the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party and national minorities. “It will not be an easy mandate for the future government,” Mr Ciolacu, whose PSD party topped the polls in the parliamentary election, said in a statement. “We are aware that we are in the midst of a deep political crisis,” he said. “It is also a crisis of trust, and this coalition aims to regain the trust of citizens, the trust of the people.” Romania’s 16 ministerial positions will be shared among the parties, which will hold a slim majority in the legislature. It is widely seen as a tactical partnership to shut out far-right nationalists whose voices found fertile ground amid high living costs and a sluggish economy. After parliament’s approval, President Klaus Iohannis swore in the new government and warned the new Cabinet that it is entering a “difficult new period” in which “for many Romanians, there are major concerns”. Romania was plunged into turmoil after Mr Georgescu’s surprise success in the presidential race, after allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference emerged. Days before the December 8 run-off, the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the presidential race. “We go through complicated times, but I think we all learned from mistakes of the past,” Mr Ciolacu said. “I hope that together with my colleagues in the coalition, we’ll find the best solutions to get past the challenges we have in front of us.” Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, said that the new government made up of the same political parties will likely embrace “soft populist” rhetoric such as economic patriotism, anti-austerity, and a peace solution in neighbouring Ukraine to counter the rise of far-right populism. “This will be a way to answer the concerns of many Romanians who voted for populists... but will not solve the fundamental problem of trust,” he said. “The only decisive factor now will be who and how convincing the pro-European candidates will be against this popular revolt.” George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, which came second in the parliamentary election, said that all politicians from his party on Monday would vote against the Ciolacu government. In 2021, the PSD and the PNL also formed an unlikely but increasingly strained coalition together with UDMR, which exited the Cabinet last year after a power-sharing dispute.
