She said: “It’s the shift to online shopping, it’s the convenience, you’ve got the family days that take place on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.” People are also increasingly stocking-up before Christmas, Ms Matthews said, and MRI found an 18% increase in footfall at all UK retail destinations on Christmas Eve this year compared with 2023. Ms Matthews said: “We see the shops are full of people all the way up to Christmas Eve, so they’ve probably got a couple of good days of food, goodies, everything that they need, and they don’t really need to go out again until later on in that week. “We did see that big boost on Christmas Eve. It looks like shoppers may have concentrated much of their spending in that pre-Christmas rush.” Many online sales kicked off between December 23 and the night of Christmas Day and “a lot of people would have grabbed those bargains from the comfort of their own home”, she said. She added: “I feel like it’s becoming more and more common that people are grabbing the bargains pre-Christmas.” Footfall is expected to rise on December 27 as people emerge from family visits and shops re-open, including Next, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis that all shut for Boxing Day. A study by Barclays Consumer Spend had forecast that shoppers would spend £236 each on average in the Boxing Day sales this year, but that the majority of purchases would be made online. Nearly half of respondents said the cost-of-living crisis will affect their post-Christmas shopping but the forecast average spend is still £50 more per person than it was before the pandemic, with some of that figure because of inflation, Barclays said. A total of 65% of shoppers are expecting to spend the majority of their sales budget online. Last year, Barclays found 63.9% of Boxing Day retail purchases were made online. ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani security forces launched an operation Tuesday night to disperse supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan who had gathered in the capital to demand his release from prison. The latest development came hours after thousands of Khan supporters, defying government warnings, broke through a barrier of shipping containers blocking off Islamabad and entered a high-security zone, where they clashed with security forces, facing tear gas shelling, mass detentions and gunfire. Tension has been high in Islamabad since Sunday when supporters of the former prime minister began a “long march” from the restive northwest to demand his release. Khan has been in a prison for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal cases that his party says are politically motivated. Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, led the protest, but she fled as police pushed back against demonstrators. Hundreds of Khan’s supporters are being arrested in the ongoing nighttime operation, and police are also seeking to arrest Bibi. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters that the Red Zone, which houses government buildings and embassies, and the surrounding areas have been cleared. Leaders from Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI, have also fled the protest site. Earlier Tuesday, Pakistan’s army took control of D-Chowk, a large square in the Red Zone, where visiting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is staying. Since Monday, Naqvi had threatened that security forces would use live fire if protesters fired weapons at them. “We have now authorized the police to respond as necessary,” Naqvi said Tuesday while visiting the square. By Tuesday afternoon, fresh waves of protesters made their way unopposed to their final destination in the Red Zone. Naqvi said Khan’s party had rejected a government offer to rally on the outskirts of the city. Information Minister Atta Tarar warned there would be a severe government reaction to the violence. He said the government did not want Bushra Bibi to achieve her goal of freeing Khan. “She wants bodies falling to the ground. She wants bloodshed,” he said. The team research team has successfully developed and certified a groundbreaking “Zero-Gap” technology for bio-electrochemical cells (BECs). It has the potential to pave the way for large-scale, cost-effective hydrogen production from organic waste. However, as BEC systems increase in size, the longer pathways for electrochemical reactions lead to higher internal resistance and reduced efficiency . “This limitation poses a significant barrier to large-scale commercialization, highlighting the need for further technological advancements to improve system efficiency and scalability,” added the press release . The research team has introduced a groundbreaking “Zero-Gap” technology to overcome this limitation. This innovative design minimizes the distance between the cell’s electrodes and separator, optimizing reaction efficiency and electron transfer. “This advancement resolves longstanding power loss challenges in conventional processes, offering a transformative pathway toward large-scale, cost-effective hydrogen production,” read the press release. Confirmed effectiveness and pilot-scale success What sets KIER’s Zero-Gap technology apart is its unique design, which ensures consistent performance even in large-scale systems. Conventional zero-gap structures often struggle with pressure imbalances as systems grow larger. This can create gaps between components and lead to drops in efficiency. KIER’s design avoids this problem, maintaining optimal performance regardless of system size. CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals have found all manner of ways to lose close games this season. Sunday’s can be blamed on a defense that missed tackles and allowed 520 yards of offense, and three turnovers by Joe Burrow. It’s become a familiar story in this disappointing season. Cincinnati (4-8) keeps scoring lots of points but can’t close out games. Seven of the Bengals’ eight losses this year have been by one score. Burrow has stopped talking about the possibility of going on a run and making the playoffs. He’d just like to win another game or two. “Playoffs are the furthest thing from my mind,” the fifth-year quarterback said. “You never know what can happen, so I’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other and try to be the best player I can be for the rest of the season, week in and week out.” The Bengals allowed Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson to throw for a season-high 414 yards and three touchdowns. After Wilson threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown, the Steelers (9-3) scored on seven of their last nine possessions. They didn’t punt until early in the fourth quarter. Xiao-Yu Dai, from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Mianyang, and colleagues examined the associations of SSBs, ASBs, and natural juices with CKD risk. The analysis included 191,956 participants from the UK Biobank followed for a median 10.6 years. The researchers found that higher consumption of SSBs and ASBs (>1 unit/day versus none) was associated with an elevated risk for CKD (SSB: hazard ratio [HR], 1.45; ASB: HR, 1.52). There was a J-shaped association between natural juices and CKD, with the lowest risk at 0 to 1 unit/day (0 to 1 unit/day versus none: HR, 0.86). For higher intakes of SSBs and ASBs with CKD, the association was mediated by metabolic syndrome by 12.5 and 18.0 percent, respectively. "Although the causal relationship cannot be established, our results emphasize the critical importance of limiting the consumption of SSBs or ASBs for CKD prevention," the authors write. "Further research is needed to confirm our findings and explore the optimal intake level for the natural juices."
