WASHINGTON — The federal election interference case against President-elect Donald Trump is over, at least during his forthcoming presidency. Federal Judge Tanya Chutkan ordered the case’s dismissal late Monday afternoon after U.S. Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith requested to dismiss the case without prejudice — meaning it could be tried again in the future once Trump’s term is over. Trump had faced four felony counts relating to fraud and obstruction for his role in scheming to overturn the 2020 presidential election results, which eventually erupted into political violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Smith also filed a dismissal request Monday in Florida to drop the case pertaining to Trump’s mishandling of classified documents. Citing the Justice Department’s “careful consideration” of the unprecedented situation, Smith told federal courts in Florida and Washington, D.C., that it would be unconstitutional for his office to continue prosecuting the incoming president, who is set to take the oath of office on Jan. 20. “(T)he Department and the country have never faced the circumstance here, where a federal indictment against a private citizen has been returned by a grand jury and a criminal prosecution is already underway when the defendant is elected President,” Smith wrote in a filing in federal court in D.C. A federal grand jury handed up an indictment of Trump in August 2023 and a superseding indictment this past August. Despite the prohibition on continuing the case against Trump, Smith wrote that the government “stands fully behind” the foundation of it. “The Government’s position on the merits of the defendant’s prosecution has not changed,” Smith wrote. “But the circumstances have...” A Trump representative hailed Smith’s decision as a “major victory for the rule of law.” “The American People and President Trump want an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and we look forward to uniting our country,” Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director, said in a statement Monday. The question of prosecuting a president has come up twice in recent U.S. history, but only while that president was already in office. Both times — in 1973, under President Richard Nixon, and in 2000, during Bill Clinton’s administration — the Justice Department blocked cases, citing constitutional constraints and harm to the president’s ability to perform the role. The special counsel also requested to drop the government’s appeal to pursue charges against Trump for his alleged hoarding of classified documents at his Florida Mar-a-Lago estate after he left office. Judge Aileen Cannon of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida dismissed the case in July. Smith will continue the appeal against Trump’s two co-defendants, Trump’s valet Waltine Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Olivera, who are also accused of mishandling the classified material. The federal investigations were two of four criminal prosecutions that Trump faced while campaigning to win back the presidency. Trump made history in May as the first former president to become a convicted felon when he was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York. The case centered on Trump’s cover-up of hush money paid to an adult film actress ahead of his election in 2016. His sentencing, scheduled for Tuesday, has been indefinitely postponed. Trump’s criminal election interference investigation in Georgia has been in a prolonged holding pattern during a drawn-out dispute over the prosecutor’s ethics. While Trump’s Georgia prosecution will likely be dropped, the state could continue its case against the 14 co-defendants.

It’s almost that time of year: Spotify is gearing up to release its annual Wrapped, personalized recaps of users’ listening habits and year in audio. Spotify has been giving its listeners breakdowns of their data since 2016. And each year, it’s become a bigger production — and internet sensation. Spotify said its 2023 Wrapped was the “biggest ever created,” in terms of audience reach and the kind of data it provided. So, what will 2024 have in store? Here’s a look at what to know ahead of this year’s Spotify Wrapped. It’s the streaming service’s annual overview of individual listening trends, as well as trends around the world. Users learn their top artists, songs, genres, albums and podcasts, all wrapped into one interactive presentation. The campaign has become a social media sensation, as people share and compare their Wrapped data with their friends and followers online. Past iterations have provided users with all kinds of breakdowns and facts, including whether they’re among an artist’s top listeners, as well as a personalized playlist of their top 100 songs of that year to save, share and listen to whenever they’re feeling nostalgic. Spotify also creates a series of playlists that reflect national and global listening trends, featuring the top streamed artists and songs. In 2023, Taylor Swift was Spotify’s most streamed artist , unseating Bad Bunny who had held the title for three years in a row. Each year has something new in store. In 2019, Wrapped included a summary of users’ streaming trends for the entire decade. Last year, Spotify matched listeners to a Sound Town based on their artist affinities and how it lined up with those in other parts of the world. So far, the streaming platform has kept the highly anticipated release date of Wrapped under ... er, wraps. In past years, it’s been released after Thanksgiving, between Nov. 30 and Dec. 6. Each year, rumors tend to swell on social media around when Spotify stops collecting data in order to prepare their Wrapped results, and this year was no exception. Spotify quickly squashed those presumptions , assuring on social media that “Spotify Wrapped doesn’t stop counting on October 31st.” A representative for Spotify did not respond to a request for comment on when the company stops tracking data for Wrapped. When Wrapped is released, each user’s Spotify account will prompt them to view their interactive data roundup. It can be accessed through the Spotify smartphone app, or by logging on to the Spotify website . Wrapped is available to users with and without Premium subscriptions. There are a handful of third-party sites that you can connect your Spotify account to that will analyze your Wrapped data. How Bad is Your Spotify is an AI bot that judges your music taste. Receiptify gives you your top songs on a sharable graphic that looks like, yes, a receipt. Instafest gives you your own personal music festival-style lineup based on your top artists. How NPRCore Are You assesses how similar your music taste is to NPR Music’s. Other major streaming platforms such as Apple Music and YouTube Music have developed their own versions of Wrapped in recent years. Apple Music’s Replay not only gives its subscribers a year-end digest of their listening habits but monthly summaries as well — a feature that helps differentiate itself from the one-time Spotify recap. That’s released at the end of the calendar year. YouTube Music, meanwhile, has a similar end-of-the-year release for its listeners, as well as periodic seasonal releases throughout the year. It released its annual Recap for users earlier this month.

Pittsburgh stormed back from an 18-6 deficit in the fourth quarter, only to allow Jameis Winston to orchestrate a game-winning touchdown drive capped by a Nick Chubb TD with 0:57 to play. That loss snapped a five-game winning streak and gave way to a challenging closing stretch that includes two matchups with the Bengals, a revenge game with the Browns, and a run of three straight games from Weeks 15-17 against the Eagles, Ravens and Chiefs. Pittsburgh knows how dangerous even a 4-7 Bengals team can be, especially with quarterback Joe Burrow, who has played at a high level despite a supporting cast struggling to win games. News today revealed that recoverable reserves of oil near the Falklands are now valued at an eye-watering £74 billion. An independent assessment of the Sea Lion field, within the North Falkland Basin and 136 miles to the north of the archipelago, has pushed up the estimated recoverable oil from 791 million barrels to 917 million barrels, equivalent to double the annual output of the entire North Sea. Rockhopper Exploration, which is the company leading the project, announced plans to extract 532 million barrels initially, reports the Telegraph, up from a previous estimate of 312 million, with most of the remainder potentially recoverable under future plans. Despite Labour’s ban on new oil and gas licences after coming to power, the Falkland Islands government has approved production in a move which illustrates the self-governing territory’s autonomy over its natural resources. Responding to the major discovery, MP Mark Francois said it is “absolutely fantastic” and “would be a great resource”. He jokingly added: “Provided Ed Miliband can get over it and doesn't try and impose any sort of restrictions on the Falkland Islands government.” Speaking on Jacob Rees-Mogg’s nightly GB News show, Mr Francois argued: “We spend a lot of money, quite rightly, defending the Falkland Islands, it would be great if we could use some of this oil wealth to relieve the pressure on the defence budget so that the Falklands pay more towards their own defence.” “There are lots and lots of potential advantages in this, and I cannot see any downsides. We should drill baby, drill around the Falklands. “China is responsible for almost a third of total global emissions today. By the way, they're still opening one coal fired power station a month. “The UK is responsible for approximately 1%, but that doesn't mean because we're only responsible for 1% we shouldn't make an effort, but it's a global problem. “And so you've got to get the major emitters like China and India and the US and Brazil to do something more muscular about it. “Even if we all went back to living in caves tomorrow, and I think that's what some people would like, it wouldn't scratch the damage that China is doing day in, day out. “So we just have to have a proportionate way of dealing with this and allowing the Falklands to use oil - we're an island, we've used oil for decades. That doesn't mean that the planet is finished, we've just got to be realistic about it. “In the meantime, if people want to save the planet they want to go and protest outside the Chinese Embassy.” The discovery has sparked concerns that it will reignite geopolitical tensions over the islands between Britain and Argentina. The South American rival has previously condemned oil exploration in the area as illegal and sought to rally international support against it.Trump expected to name Kelly Loeffler for Agriculture secretary

CHICAGO — Teresa Weatherspoon doesn’t want to dwell on the past. That’s easy to say. Harder to execute. But as she embraces a new role with Unrivaled — a 3-on-3 league that will debut in January — the former Chicago Sky coach wants to focus on the future. Weatherspoon will coach the Vinyl Basketball Club, an Unrivaled team that includes Arike Ogunbowale, Jordin Canada, Rhyne Howard, Rae Burrell, Aliyah Edwards and Dearica Hamby. The new gig is a welcome change for Weatherspoon, who felt blindsided when the Sky fired her Sept. 26 after only 11 months as coach. Weatherspoon knew her debut season as a professional head coach wasn’t ideal. The Sky went 13-27, and she struggled to wrangle a young roster while navigating injuries and the midseason trade of guard Marina Mabrey. Despite the Sky missing the playoffs for the first time in five years, Weatherspoon thought she had more time with the organization. She doesn’t want the firing to affect her confidence as a coach. “I process things and I let it go,” Weatherspoon said Wednesday in a news conference. “You’ve got to know this and stand on it — you’re not for everybody. I’m OK with that. “I know the things I did, I know the things I helped change. I know the things I had to go through and what I stood through. I will do that again — over and over and over.” With Unrivaled, Weatherspoon will return to a player development role. Although it is not officially affiliated with the WNBA, Unrivaled is focused on providing an offseason option for players to develop their game and supplement their income without going abroad. As a result, Unrivaled coaches will focus heavily on providing players with the offseason environment they typically seek from individual trainers and skills specialists. Unrivaled co-founder and President Alex Bazzell previously described the decision to hire Weatherspoon as a “no-brainer” for the league. Weatherspoon echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of feeling valued as a coach in the wake of her Sky exit. “To know that you’re wanted and needed, it makes the decision to join very easy,” Weatherspoon said. The Unrivaled season will begin in January and lasts only eight weeks. After that, the future is uncertain for Weatherspoon, who didn’t provide any hints about whether she would return to the WNBA: “That’s to be seen.” After a whirlwind offseason that saw seven teams fire or part ways with their coaches, the Dallas Wings, Connecticut Sun and Washington Mystics still are searching for a replacement. Weatherspoon also could join the bench of an NBA or WNBA staff or return to college coaching. In the meantime, she’s eager to dive back into working hands-on with individual players with Unrivaled to improve their craft. “It’s a human connection,” Weatherspoon said. “It’s a gift to connect with people and show concern and love for others. I just want people to win. I want everything I experience to be shared. I want to be of help, to give more. “It’s important to lift and help. It’s all about my players. I want to lift things from them that they didn’t know existed.” ©2024 Chicago Tribune. Visit chicagotribune.com . At a town hall meeting with the bureau workforce, Mr Wray said he would be stepping down “after weeks of careful thought”. Mr Wray’s intended resignation is not unexpected considering that Mr Trump had picked Mr Patel for the role in his new administration. Mr Wray had previously been named by Mr Trump and began the 10-year term — a length meant to insulate the agency from the political influence of changing administrations — in 2017, after Mr Trump fired then-FBI director James Comey. Mr Trump had demonstrated his anger with Mr Wray on multiple occasions, including after Mr Wray’s congressional testimony in September. “My goal is to keep the focus on our mission — the indispensable work you’re doing on behalf of the American people every day,” Mr Wray told agency employees. “In my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray, while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work.” Mr Wray continued: “It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway — this is not easy for me. I love this place, I love our mission, and I love our people — but my focus is, and always has been, on us and doing what’s right for the FBI.” Mr Wray received a standing ovation following his remarks before a standing-room-only crowd at FBI headquarters and some in the audience cried, according to an FBI official who was not authorised to discuss the private gathering and spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press. Mr Trump applauded the news on social media, calling it “a great day for America as it will end the weaponisation of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice” and saying that Mr Patel’s confirmation will begin “the process of Making the FBI Great Again”. If confirmed by the Senate, Mr Patel would herald a radical leadership transformation at the nation’s premier federal law enforcement agency. He has advocated shutting down the FBI’s Washington headquarters and called for ridding the federal government of “conspirators”, raising alarm that he might seek to wield the FBI’s significant investigative powers as an instrument of retribution against Mr Trump’s perceived enemies. Mr Patel said in a statement Wednesday that he was looking forward to “a smooth transition. I will be ready to serve the American people on day one”.The Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader said he spoke to Charlotte Fallon, a worker with St Joseph’s Foundation, on the phone on Saturday after a clip of an exchange between them on Friday went viral. RTE footage posted to the social media site X shows Mr Harris on a canvass in Kanturk when Ms Fallon tells the Taoiseach carers “were ignored” and the Government has “done nothing for us”. “The disability sector is a joke,” she says. “You’ve done nothing for us, our people are suffering. I’m very passionate about my job.” Mr Harris responds by saying: “No, not at all,” and: “I’m very passionate about disability too.” Ms Fallon says: “But there’s no mention of (them in the) Budget. You ignored them, you ignore the carers,” to which Mr Harris says: “That’s not true,” several times before shaking her hand and walking away. While out canvassing at a Christmas market in Rathfarnham in Dublin on Saturday afternoon, Mr Harris said he was annoyed with himself and had called Ms Fallon to apologise. “I called Charlotte this morning because she was absolutely owed an apology from me,” he said. “We had a very good conversation, a very good conversation. I was very grateful to her for her time and her kindness. “We spoke about a number of issues, we spoke about disability services, we spoke about the issue of pay parity for people in Section 39 organisations, and we also spoke about the issue of the means test for carers. “I was grateful to have a chance to listen to Charlotte and also talk through with her some of my own plans and views and vision in relation to disability services. Really grateful for the conversation, learned a lot from it, and I’ve also said that I’d love to call in to where she works in Cork in the coming weeks, and she said I’d be very welcome. “I’m annoyed with how I didn’t give that person, Charlotte, the time last night, she deserved that time. “I’ve been around the country and I’ve had hundreds of conversations some days, and I’ve learned a lot and always learned a lot from listening to people and I’m very sorry that didn’t happen last night.” Asked what happened last night, he said: “There’s no excuse for it, I’m annoyed with myself in relation to it, disability is what makes me tick. “It will always be my passion, and it’s Charlotte’s passion too, and I’m really grateful to her for giving me the opportunity to speak with her today.” Asked whether he thought people would doubt his sincerity on wanting to reform the State’s disability services after seeing the video, Mr Harris said: “I hope not. “All I can do is really double my efforts to convince people of the facts that we have a plan for the future of this country, and very much at the heart of that plan is better services, better delivery and better empowerment of people with disabilities. “I’ve tried to bring a focus to it since I’ve become Taoiseach, and it’s something that I will continue to work on intensively and even more intensively as a result of this.” On Saturday morning, Mr Harris posted a video on Instagram where he said he was spurred on to become a politician after seeing his parents fight for access to services for his brother Adam, who has autism. He said the interaction happened at the end of a “very long day” and he felt “really bad” about it. Mr Harris then outlined his party’s plans for carers and the disability sector, including removing the means testing for the Carers’ Allowance and to ensure that there are therapies in special schools and special classes. Sinn Fein’s housing spokesperson Eoin O Broin said that Mr Harris’ reaction “showed the true face of Fine Gael” and showed “a contempt for working people”. Speaking at a press event in Dublin on Saturday, Fine Gael ministers Helen McEntee and Paschal Donohoe defended their party leader. “I think the Taoiseach himself has been very clear that he wished the encounter had gone differently. It had been the end of a very, very long day,” Ms McEntee said. “What he said very clearly is that he should have given her more time, and should have engaged for longer with her, but this is the reason he got into politics.” Mr Donohoe said: “In the course of an election campaign, in all the interactions that we have with people, of course, we sometimes feel within ourselves ‘that could have gone differently’ and ‘could have gone better’. I think it’s particularly the case for somebody who is so committed to looking at how we can support those who need more.”

CLEVELAND (AP) — Shortly after doing a face-down snow angel, firing a few celebratory snowballs and singing “Jingle Bells” on his way to the media room, Jameis Winston ended his postgame news conference with a simple question. “Am I a Brown yet?” he asked. He is now. And who knows? Maybe for a lot longer than expected. Winston entered Cleveland football folklore on Thursday night by leading the Browns to a 24-19 win over the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Winston's performance at Huntington Bank Field, which transformed into the world's largest snow globe, not only made him an instantaneous hero in the eyes of Browns fans but added another wrinkle to the team's ever-changing, never-ending quarterback conundrum. In his fourth start since Deshaun Watson's season-ending Achilles tendon injury, Winston made enough big plays to help the Browns (3-8) get a victory that should quiet conjecture about coach Kevin Stefanski's job. Some wins mean more than others. In Cleveland, beating the Steelers is as big as it gets. But beyond any instant gratification, Winston has given the Browns more to consider as they move forward. Watson's future with Cleveland is highly uncertain since it will still be months before the team has a grip on whether he's even an option in 2025, his fourth year since signing a $230 million, fully guaranteed contract that has proven calamitous. It's also possible the Browns will cut ties with Watson. They signed Winston to a one-year contract to be Watson's backup. But the unexpected events of 2024 have changed plans and led to the possibility that the 30-year-old Winston could become Cleveland's full-time QB or a bridge to their next young one. So much is unclear. What's not is that Winston, who leaped into the end zone on fourth-and-2 for a TD to put the Browns ahead 18-6 in the fourth quarter, is a difference maker. With his larger-than-life personality and the joy he shows whether practicing or throwing three touchdown passes, he has lifted the Browns. A man of faith, he's made his teammates believe. Winston has done what Watson couldn't: made the Browns better. “A very, very authentic person,” Stefanski said Friday on a Zoom call. “He’s the same guy every single day. He's the same guy at 5 a.m. as he at 5 p.m. He brings great energy to everything he does, and I think his teammates appreciate that about him.” Winston, who is 2-2 as a starter with wins over the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, has a knack for inspiring through fiery, preacher-like pregame speeches. But what has impressed the Browns is his ability to stay calm in the storm. “He doesn’t get rattled,” said Myles Garrett, who had three sacks against the Steelers . “He’s just tuned in and focused as anyone I’ve seen at that position. Turn the page. There was a turnover, came back to the sideline, ‘Love you. I’m sorry. We’re going to get it back.’ He was already on to the next one, ‘How can we complete the mission?’ “I have a lot of respect for him. First was from afar and now seeing it on the field in front of me, it’s a blessing to have someone who plays a game with such a passion and want-to. You can’t ask for a better teammate when they take those things to heart and they want to play for you like we’re actually brothers and that’s what we have to attain. That brotherhood.” What's working Winston has done something else Watson couldn't: move the offense. The Browns scored more than 20 points for just the second time this season, and like Joe Flacco a year ago, Winston has shown that Stefanski's system works with a quarterback patient enough to let plays develop and unafraid to take shots downfield. What needs help The conditions certainly were a factor, but the Browns were a miserable 1 of 10 on third down, a season-long trend. However, Cleveland converted all four fourth-down tries, including a fourth-and-3 pass from Winston to Jerry Jeudy with 2:36 left that helped set up Nick Chubb's go-ahead TD run. Stock up RT Jack Conklin. Garrett outplayed Steelers star T.J. Watt in their rivalry within the rivalry partly because Conklin did a nice job containing Pittsburgh's edge rusher, who was held without a sack and had one tackle for loss. Conklin has made a remarkable comeback since undergoing reconstructive knee surgery last year. Stock down Owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam. Their desire to build a dome is well intended, but an indoor game could never come close to matching the surreal setting of Thursday night, when snow swirled throughout the stadium and covered nearly all the yard lines and hash marks. “It was beautiful,” Winston said. Injuries WR Cedric Tillman is in the concussion protocol. He had two catches before taking a big hit on the final play of the third quarter. Key numbers 9 — Consecutive home wins for the Browns in Thursday night games. Three of those have come against Pittsburgh.
