EXCLUSIVE The mystery 'UFO' drones over US airbases in Britain that have baffled witnesses: As UFO fever grips America, villagers reveals their very strange sightings in UK Have YOU seen these drones flying? Email jose.ramos@mailonline.co.uk By JOSE RAMOS Published: 13:40, 15 December 2024 | Updated: 13:52, 15 December 2024 e-mail 47 View comments Villagers 'can't believe what they saw' after yet another sighting of a suspected drone was spotted flying close to an American air base in Britain. MailOnline has exclusively uncovered fresh footage filmed by a resident that shows the suspected drone flying over Hockwold cum Wilton, just six miles from RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk. The village sits between two Air Force bases, RAF Feltwell and RAF Lakenheath. It comes as mysterious drone activity near a US Army base in New Jersey causes a sensation in America, with the federal government proving unable to provide an explanation of what they are. Witnesses there claim the drones perfrom manuvers impossible for known technology. Reports about American nuclear weapons being deployed to the latter for the first time since the Cold War have heightened fears that Russia could be behind the drone activity. In America, experts have warned that the drone activity could be intelligence gathering by Iran or Russia. Philip Ingram, a former British military intelligence Colonel, said the recent drone sightings in the UK had 'all the hallmarks' of an operation by Russia's secretive GRU. The US Air Force admitted last month that drones had flown close to three of its UK bases – including Lakenheath, Feltwell as well as RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk. Farmworker Ricky Fletcher, 43, was leaving work on November 29 when initially he only saw one of them flying above. He told us: 'I first saw them on the farm I work at, I was leaving work at 4pm on Friday evening and saw one flying way from Feltwell low to the ground, I almost thought it was a helicopter, it was so big. Farm worker Ricky Fletcher, 43, was leaving work on November 29 when initially he only saw a drone flying above him Mr Fletcher added: 'We couldn't believe what we were seeing' 'But it wasn't. The way the lights flashed it wasn't a plane. It was definitely a drone.' However, soon after that, he claims the sky was filled with a dozen of them. 'All of a sudden we looked up and saw about 10 of them circling around. We were fascinated by them, they were just circling around, not really flying in the same direction.' He added: 'We couldn't believe what we were seeing.' 'They moved in and circled around that one there was over my village in Hockwold between Lakenheath and Feltwell.' He said he drove home, in the same village, but could still see them circling over. 'I would come out to smoke and would see them at night,' he said. This came after footage emerged of what is suspected to be four drones, brazenly flying with bright lights, in the early evening darkness above RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk. While two of the drones to the left of the screen in the video appear stationary, the other two are shown moving and passing each other on the night of November 28. The bright light at the top of the screen is believed to be the planet Venus which can be seen in the south-western sky in the month of November. The planet which is the brightest in the earth's solar system is often confused with being an aircraft or rocket. The sightings which are said to have started on November 20 and continued for several days have followed similar drone 'invasions' in New Jersey . Read More EXCLUSIVE The mystery drone swarms over British bases that could be a sign of an impending Russian attack Some reports have talked of 'car-sized' drones over New Jersey since mid-November, sometimes appearing in groups and often remaining in the same place for hours at a time. They are also said to have been spotted around New York, Texas and Oklahoma. A New Jersey police department sparked concern after it revealed that a drone it sent up to track a mystery aircraft 'easily' evaded their device before disappearing into thin air . Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy said a drone was launched after one of his officers saw 50 unmanned aerial vehicles, 'coming off the ocean'. The officer dialed 911 to alert state police, the FBI and the Coast Guard. The maritime agency then reported seeing spotted 13 drones following their boat, estimating that the devices had a wingspan of eight feet. Matronardy told NewsNation's Rich McHugh the force put up an 'industrial grade' drone to follow one of the devices, but it quickly slipped through their grasp. The incident is just one of many drone sightings concerning locals in the Garden State and beyond. 'If this is not our military, then it's even more scary,' McHugh said. Comment now Intelligence analysts from both the US and UK have pointed the finger at interference by Russian despot Vladimir Putin. The video at RAF Lakenheath was taken shortly after British authorities had announced that 60 soldiers were being sent to investigate the sightings at the three UK bases. Two days after it was taken, an RAF Chinook apparently flew British special forces troops to join the probe at RAF Lakenheath which is home to the to the 48th Fighter Wing's F-15E Strike Eagle and F-35A Lightning II aircraft. Flight tracker records showed the Chinook leaving RAF Odiham, Hampshire, and flying to Poole, Dorset, to apparently pick up SBS troops before heading to Hereford where the SAS are based, and then on to the US base. Earlier this month, villagers near RAF Lakenheath described seeing the drones on repeated nights, along with an increase in security patrols by MoD police. The base stated this week that there had been no new sightings in recent days. A retired British spymaster yesterday claimed that Kremlin intelligence services were potentially gearing up for a fresh wave of incursions into UK airspace. Philip Ingram, a former British military intelligence Colonel, said the recent drone sightings had 'all the hallmarks' of an operation by Russia's secretive GRU spy agency. 'It's a distinct possibility if not a certain probability this is all down to Russian intelligence,' he said. ' They and the GRU are just a bunch of petulant little boys. They're trying to suggest they have the ability to disrupt and influence through a level of nuisance action.' A swarm of drones is spotted over in New Jersey, America, which has alarmed US officials Drones have been sighted at military bases in the UK and US. Pictured is one drone circling an American weapons base in New Jersey - which experts say is Russian He added: 'I would say we will see another flurry of activity in the next few months for sure. Whether drones or something else, I suspect something else.' Col Ingram said Russians or their agents could also be using the UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) to test Western forces' responses and capabilities. He suggested they were potentially carrying out such operations to massage Russian tyrant Putin's bruised ego, after his failures in Ukraine. He also claimed the drones were part of a wider spate of small, 'seemingly isolated' incidents which could be part of a larger coordinated test of disruption tactics. 'There's a pattern building up and from an intelligence perspective, I don't like patterns,' Col Ingram added. 'Each one of these things in isolation won't massively disrupt our way of life and none will potentially raise a big question mark but if you suddenly put them together and they all happen at once, then the level of disruption you could have could be really serious.' The sightings follow a series of suspicious incidents worldwide, which have seen hackers carrying out cyber attacks, sabotaging underwater internet cables and bomb scares triggering chaos at Gatwick and in central London. The FBI and other agencies are said to investigating the sightings in America, but the Department of Homeland Security said on Wednesday: 'We have no more information as to where these drones are coming from, where they're launching from, where they're landing.' Read More EXCLUSIVE Experts reveal what mystery drones over New Jersey are... and why Americans should be terrified Britain this week unveiled its newest weapon in the war against drones - a high powered laser which is able to scorch the devices out of the sky in seconds. The high-energy device, mounted on the roof of a Wolfhound armoured vehicle, was successfully tested at the Radnor Range in mid-Wales. Soldiers from 16 Royal Artillery - an air defence regiment based near Portsmouth, Hampshire - were able to track and destroy hovering targets. Retired police lieutenant and intelligence analyst Tim McMillan told DailyMail.com the descriptions of the UFOs in Jersey 'sound exactly like Russian Orlan-10 drones' — secretive craft that fly in packs of three to five. The Orlan-10 craft comes with 'standard positional lighting' — a red light on the left (port) wingtip, a green light on the right (starboard) wingtip, and white taillights, similar to the lights seen on ordinary aircraft and Jersey's 'mystery drones.' Experts suggest that Russia could be carrying out an intelligence-gathering mission known as 'ferreting', meant to intentionally trigger and test a rival's airspace defence procedures and response times. Or the Kremlin could simply be spying on allies of Ukraine who are aiding the fight against Russia's invasion. While experts could not rule out a theory that Iran was behind the attacks, argued by NJ Congressman Jeff Van Drew, but denied by the Pentagon, White House officials have long noted that Russia and Iran collaborate on military drone development. 'Russia has been very aggressive and reckless with its responses to Western support of Ukraine,' Lt McMillan told DailyMail.com. 'This isn't something I see discussed in US media, but it's well documented and openly discussed here in Europe.' The first New Jersey drone sightings appeared over the US Army's Picatinny Arsenal on November 18, but reports to varying levels of credibility have now spread to at least 12 counties throughout the Garden State. Officials have received reports of craft flying of 'water reservoirs, electric transmission lines, rail stations, police departments, and military installations' in recent weeks, according to Florham Park, NJ police chief Joseph J Orlando. But those earliest and most credible sightings above Picatinny, according to Lt McMillan, are most worth focusing on. 'Picatinny Arsenal,' as Lt McMillan told DailyMail.com, is 'home of the US Army's CCDC Armaments Center, which is responsible for manufacturing and supplying Ukraine with 155mm artillery ammunition.' Republican Rep Jeff Van Drew has claimed that Iran is behind the drones in New Jersey, telling reporters that the nation parked a 'mothership' off the East Coast. Voice cloning is an emerging technology powered by artificial intelligence and it's raising alarms about its potential misuse. Earlier this year, New Hampshire voters experienced this firsthand when a deepfake mimicking President Joe Biden’s voice urged them to skip the polls ahead of the primary. The deepfake likely needed only several seconds of the president's voice to create the clone. According to multiple AI voice cloning models, about 10 seconds of an actual voice is all that is needed to recreate it. And that can easily come from a phone call or a video from social media. "A person's voice is really probably not that information-dense. It's not as unique as you may think," James Betker, a technical staff member at OpenAI, told Scripps News. Betker developed TortoiseTTS, an open-source voice cloning model. "It's actually very easy to model, very easy to learn, the distribution of all human voices from a fairly small amount of data," Betker added. How AI voice cloning works AI models have been trained on vast amounts of data, learning to recognize human speech. Programs analyze the data and train repeatedly, learning characteristics such as rhythm, stress, pitch and tone. "It can look at 10 seconds of someone speaking and it has stored enough information about how humans speak with that kind of prosody and pitch. Enough information about how people speak with their processing pitch and its weights that it can just continue on," Betker said. Imagine a trained AI model as a teacher, and the person cloning the voice to be a student. When a student asks to create a cloned voice, it starts off as white noise. The teacher scores how close the student is to sounding correct. The student tries again and again based on these scores until the student produces something close to what the teacher wants. While this explanation is extremely simplified, the concept of generating a cloned voice is based on bit-by-bit, based on probability distributions. "I think, at its core, it's pretty simple," Betker said. "I think the analogy of just continuing with what you're given will take you pretty far here." There are currently some AI models that claim to only need two seconds of samples. While the results are not convincing yet, Betker says future models will need even fewer voice samples to create a convincing clone.Developers of Baltimore flex-lab space hope to create more than 100 jobs( MENAFN - Gulf Times) Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD), in partnership with the Doha film Institute (DFI), has announced the screening of the documentary Ode to Our Land, a tribute to His Highness the Father Amir sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani's visionary leadership in building a modern, prosperous nation. By STEVE LEBLANC, ERIC TUCKER and TARA COPP BOSTON (AP) — Two men, including a dual Iranian American citizen, have been arrested on charges that they exported sensitive technology to Iran that was used in a drone attack in Jordan that killed three American troops early this year and injured dozens of other service members, the Justice Department said Monday. The pair were arrested after FBI specialists who analyzed the drone traced the navigation system to an Iranian company operated by one of the defendants, who relied on technology funneled from the U.S. by his alleged co-conspirator, officials said. “We often cite hypothetical risk when we talk about the dangers of American technology getting into dangerous hands,” said U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy, the top federal prosecutor in Massachusetts. “Unfortunately, in this situation, we are not speculating.” The defendants were identified as Mahdi Mohammad Sadeghi, who prosecutors say works at a Massachusetts-based semiconductor company, and Mohammad Abedininajafabadi, who was arrested Monday in Italy as the Justice Department seeks his extradition to Massachusetts. Prosecutors allege that Abedininajafabadi, who also uses the surname Adedini and operates an Iranian company that manufactures navigation systems for drones, has connections to Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. They allege that he conspired with Sadeghi to circumvent American export control laws, including through a front company in Switzerland, and procure sensitive technology into Iran. Both men are charged with export control violations, and Abedini separately faces charges of conspiring to provide material support to Iran. A lawyer for Sadeghi, a naturalized U.S. citizen who was arrested Monday in Massachusetts, did not immediately return an email seeking comment. U.S. officials blamed the January attack on the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-backed militias that includes Kataib Hezbollah. Three Georgia soldiers — Sgt. William Jerome Rivers of Carrollton, Sgt. Breonna Moffett of Savannah and Sgt. Kennedy Sanders of Waycross — were killed in the Jan. 28 drone attack on a U.S. outpost in northeastern Jordan called Tower 22. In the attack, the one-way attack drone may have been mistaken for a U.S. drone that was expected to return back to the logistics base about the same time and was not shot down. Instead, it crashed into living quarters, killing the three soldiers and injuring more than 40. “To the people who were injured by this attack, to the loved ones and family members of the people who lost their lives, as the son of a combat veteran I humbly hope that today’s charges bring some measure of justice and accountability,” Levy said. Tower 22 held about 350 U.S. military personnel at the time. It is strategically located between Jordan and Syria, only 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the Iraqi border, and in the months just after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, and Israel’s blistering response in Gaza, Iranian-backed militias intensified their attacks on U.S. military locations in the region. Following the attack, the U.S. launched a huge counterstrike against 85 sites in Iraq and Syria used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Iranian-backed militia and bolstered Tower 22’s defenses. ____ Tucker and Copp reported from Washington.Drones over New Jersey prompt new detection technology to be deployed
Washington, D.C. — The Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), yesterday announced $2.1 million for American Samoa’s broadband and digital accessibility as part of over $60 million nationally for Digital Equity Plans. The effort was authorized by Congress under the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also called the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata supported leading to numerous local funding announcements since. “The best possible future for our islands’ economy is based on being able to keep up with technology and communications so our local small businesses can take part in worldwide economic activity, our students have access to the latest learning, and our hospital and clinics can increase services through tele-health,” the Congresswoman said. “I supported the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to strengthen infrastructure, broadband and other improvements. Thank you to Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, Assistant Secretary Alan Davidson, and NTIA for ensuring American Samoa’s funding, along with ASG as our people work with this program for our digital capacity in our islands.” American Samoa will use $2,100,000 in funding to implement key digital equity initiatives, including: With this announcement, NTIA has approved and recommended for award all state and U.S. Territory applications for the first round of funding from the State Digital Equity Capacity Grant Program, one of three Digital Equity Act grant programs created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This first funding round will make approximately $768 million available to states and U.S. Territories. This funding is part of the “Internet for All” initiative, a key component of President Biden’s “Investing in America” agenda. For a variety of reasons, many Americans struggle to use the Internet connection available to them—for example, some lack the skills to navigate online resources and protect their personal and financial information online; others cannot afford a computer or tablet at home. States and territories will use this funding to implement their digital equity plans, which outlines how they will empower individuals and communities with the tools and skills necessary to benefit from meaningful access to affordable, reliable, high-speed Internet service. “Quality, affordable high-speed Internet allows families and businesses to thrive in our modern economy. Thanks to President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Department of Commerce is connecting everyone across the country to quality, affordable high-speed Internet and providing the resources they need to make the most of that Internet connection,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “We look forward to working with the awardees to ensure all residents have the tools and skills to take advantage of quality, affordable high-speed Internet – whether it’s for work, education, health care, or any other essential service.” These approvals are from the first funding round of the Digital Equity Capacity Grant Program, which made available more than $800 million for states, including Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, U.S. Territories, and Native Entities to apply for grants to implement their digital equity plans. These plans were developed under the State Digital Equity Planning Grant Program. Awards of funding will require additional review and approval of State-submitted documentation. “For the first time, every state in the nation has a digital equity plan in place to promote widespread adoption of high-speed Internet services. These states and territories now can request access to the funds to put their digital equity plans into action,” said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information and NTIA Administrator Alan Davidson. “The Biden-Harris Administration’s Internet for All initiative will ensure everyone can thrive online through access to devices and digital skills.” Other states and territories in the announcement along with American Samoa were Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Maryland, North Dakota, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.AP Trending SummaryBrief at 3:39 p.m. EST
Saquon Barkley has become the Shohei Ohtani of the NFL. There's no better home run hitter playing football right now. Barkley had touchdown runs of 72 and 70 yards for the Philadelphia Eagles in a 37-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. He now has five runs of 50-plus yards this season and is on pace to break Eric Dickerson's single-season record of 2,105 yards set in 1984. Barkley's historic performance against the Rams — his 255 yards set a team record — captivated a national audience and turned him into a fan favorite for the AP NFL MVP award. He's not the betting favorite, however. Josh Allen has the best odds at plus-150, according to Bet MGM Sportsbook. Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson is next at plus-250 followed by Barkley at plus-400. Running backs have won the award 18 times, including three-time winner Jim Brown, who was the AP's first NFL MVP in 1957. Quarterbacks have dominated the award, winning it 45 times. Only three players who weren't QBs or RBs have been MVP. It takes a special season for a non-QB to win it mainly because the offense goes through the signal caller. Quarterbacks handle the ball every offensive snap, run the show and get the credit when things go well and the blame when it doesn't. Adrian Peterson was the most recent non-QB to win it when he ran for 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Minnesota Vikings in 2012. Playing for a winning team matters, too. Nine of the past 11 winners played for a No. 1 seed with the other two winners on a No. 2 seed. The Vikings earned the sixth seed when Pederson was MVP. Barkley is a major reason why the Eagles (9-2) are leading the NFC East and only trail Detroit (10-1) by one game for the top spot in the conference. Does he have a realistic chance to win the MVP award? Kicker Mark Moseley was the MVP in the strike-shortened 1982 season when he made 20 of 21 field goals and 16 of 19 extra points in nine games for Washington. If voters once selected a kicker, everyone has a chance, especially a game-changer such as Barkley. Defensive tackle Alan Page was the MVP in 1971 and linebacker Lawrence Taylor won it in 1986. Running back Christian McCaffrey finished third in voting last year and wide receiver Justin Jefferson placed fifth in 2022. The Offensive Player of the Year award and Defensive Player of the Year award recognize the best all-around players on both sides of the ball, allowing voters to recognize non-QBs if they choose. Wide receivers and running backs have won the AP OPOY award seven times over the past 11 seasons. McCaffrey was the 2023 winner. The AP's new voting format introduced in 2022 also gives non-QBs a better opportunity to get MVP recognition. Voter submit their top five picks for each award, with a weighted point system. Previously, voters made one choice for each award. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league vote for MVP and seven other awards. The awards are based on regular-season performance. The Chiefs (10-1) and Bills (9-2) already are in position to lock up postseason berths right after Thanksgiving. Kansas City clinches a playoff berth with a win over Las Vegas on Black Friday and a loss by Miami on Thursday night, or a win plus a loss by Denver on Monday night. Buffalo can wrap up a fifth straight AFC East title with a victory over San Francisco on Sunday and a loss by the Dolphins. It's not a given that the Dallas Cowboys will be looking for a new head coach after this season. Owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday on local radio that Mike McCarthy could end up getting a contract extension. "I don't think that's crazy at all. This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He has great ideas. We got a lot of football left," Jones said. McCarthy led the Cowboys (4-7) to three straight 12-win seasons, but they went 1-3 in the playoffs and haven't reached the NFC championship game since winning the Super Bowl 29 years ago. Injuries have contributed to the team's struggles this season, but Dallas was just 3-5 before Dak Prescott was lost for the rest of the season. The Cowboys upset Washington last week and their next four games are against teams that currently have losing records. If they somehow end up 9-8 or even 8-9, Jones could make a case for keeping McCarthy. YOU can tell what kind of 12 months it’s been when the dictionary people choose their words of the year. The Australian English Macquarie Dictionary went with ‘enshittification’, a term coined by Canadian journalist and author Cory Doctorow which it explained as the “the gradual deterioration of a service or product brought about by a reduction in the quality of service provided, especially of an online platform, and as a consequence of profit-seeking.” The Oxford English Dictionary, meanwhile, chose ‘brain-rot’, which they defined as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as a result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging.” Yep, that kind of year. The two words seem closely related and go beyond the tech world to a more general malaise. Brain-rot is clearly a symptom of enshittification, with, say, this year’s US presidential election being a grand gala display of the process. On a personal level, fears about brain-rot are rife among those of us with children who consume oodles of enshittified online material. How we wish for them the intellectually stimulating fare of our own childhoods, like Bananaman, Inspector Gadget and Pat Sharp’s Fun House. Nor did sport did escape enshittification in 2024. It was there directly in the way that athletes continued to be targeted for online hatred, the great shit funnel of social media turning itself on the best and brightest. That one of the emblematic Irish sportspeople of 2024, Rhasidat Adeleke, would have to endure racist abuse following the European Athletics Championships, was, to put it bluntly, pretty shit. Enshittification went beyond the online effluent that accounts for a large chunk of sporting discourse. It was there in a broader sense in the every word, act and deed of Fifa, whose busy year of making things worse included selling off great swathes of the world’s game to the state of Saudi Arabia – from hosting rights for the men’s World Cup, to sponsorship of the women’s World Cup, to the funding of their idiot stepchild Club World Cup idea – in order to bankroll the personal ambitions of its president, Gianni Infantino. It was there when rugby fans watched the Champions Cup and lamented the bastardisation of a once great tournament. It was there in the Ineos takeover of Manchester United’s football department, which involved cutting 250 staff and appointing roughly the same number of sporting directors, and slashing the staff’s £100 Christmas bonus while paying £21million to sack and replace Erik Ten Hag as manager four months after giving him a new contract. It was still there in professional golf, long enshittified by the LIV wars and continuing in the delusion that people will watch competitions where the best players don’t play against each other and get paid grotesque amounts of money for the privilege. There is more where that came from, with the forthcoming Rory McIlroy- and Tiger Woods-backed TGL team-based indoor league sounding like something that came from an AI generator for terrible golf formats. Gaelic football reached such a state of enshittification that it had to be rescued from itself by the Football Review Committee (FRC), a crack team of grizzled veterans, kind of like a GAA version of The Expendables. The FRC were helped in their arguments for rule-changes by an All-Ireland Football Championship which seems to have been blown from the memory already, like the tumbleweed meme that summed up most of its fixtures. There are too many hurling matches behind paywalls, too many people going for pints in the Aviva during rugby matches and too many soccer matches full stop. Cheltenham is too long and the Brits are rubbish at training horses so it’s no fun anymore. What happened to the Irish lineout? Why can’t Evan Ferguson get a game at Brighton? Why is Brian Fenton retiring? How did we not qualify for the women’s Euros? Why was Rhasidat Adeleke denied an Olympic medal by a Bahraini athlete who had served a two-year ban for the serious doping violation of missing three tests? Why is the taxman going after the Cúl Camps? Why was Gladiator II so crap? (Ok, not sport that last one, but still). And yet, for all that, for all the greed and corruption and mismanagement and the continued existence of VAR, the amazing thing is that the words that define 2024 in sport are not those chosen by the dictionary people, but words like surprise and delight and pure, unadulterated joy. When the mind conjures 2024 in sport it goes not to the grim “consequences of profit-seeking” that seem everywhere but to the wonderfully batty opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics and the glorious fortnight that followed it. Those images of fencing at the Grand Palais and dressage at Versailles and beach volleyball at the Eiffel Tower, of Leon Marchand and Mondo Duplantis and Simone Biles and Antoine Dupont. The skateboarding! The surfing! The breakdancing! That summer dream of a fortnight when we seemed to be up for medals every day and every one of them had a story that lit up the finest corners of the human condition. The courage and resilience of Rhys McClenaghan and Kellie Harrington, Mona McSharry’s journey within herself to find the split second to win an Olympic medal, the touched-by-gods majesty of Daniel Wiffen, Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy. The feats of Adeleke individually and her relay teammates, who took no medals but all of our hearts. But it’s more than golden memories that saved us from the sludge. It was the surprising twists, like the collapse of Manchester City or the juddering halt to the Limerick hurling machine or the emergence of Luke Littler as the kebab-toting hero for a generation or, I’ll be damned, the Irish men winning a couple of international soccer matches. It’s in the joy of the Georgian football fans at Euro 2024, their own Italia ’90 while political unrest reigned up home. It’s in the parable about change and renewal that is the Irish out-half succession, with 38-year-old Johnny Sexton handing over to 24-year-old Jack Crowley, who is challenged by 21-year-old Sam Prendergast, who all the rugby experts reckon should be looking over his shoulder at 19-year-old Leinster academy starlet Caspar Gabriel. It’s in the electric fluctuations of fortune that made Clare’s All-Ireland hurling final win over Cork the fitting finale for hurling’s short, spectacular summer. It’s Shels winning the maddest League of Ireland ever and that not even being the biggest story in domestic football thanks to Rovers' exploits in Europe. It’s watching Rory miss those putts at the US Open and wondering how any benevolent deity could allow it. The sheer indefatigability of Katie Taylor and Katie George Dunlevy. And it’s in Ciara Mageean’s European 1500 metre gold, the sheer guts of it, not least because she was running with the pain that would end in the heartbreak of missing the Olympics. All these things are what make sport remarkably resistant to the forces of enshittification. We look forward to enjoying more of them in 2025, if the brain-rot allows. He is not yet in power but President-elect Donald Trump rattled much of the world with an off-hours warning of stiff tariffs on close allies and China — a loud hint that Trump-style government by social media post is coming back. With word of these levies against goods imported from Mexico, Canada and China, Trump sent auto industry stocks plummeting, raised fears for global supply chains and unnerved the world’s major economies. For Washington-watchers with memories of the Republican’s first term, the impromptu policy volley on Monday evening foreshadowed a second term of startling announcements of all manner, fired off at all hours of the day from his smartphone. “Donald Trump is never going to change much of anything,” said Larry Sabato, a leading US political scientist and director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. “You can expect in the second term pretty much what he showed us about himself and his methods in the first term. Social media announcements of policy, hirings and firings will continue.” The first of Trump’s tariff announcements — a 25 percent levy on everything coming in from Mexico and Canada — came amid an angry rebuke of lax border security at 6:45 pm on Truth Social, Trump’s own platform. The United States is bound by agreements on the movement of goods and services brokered by Trump in a free trade treaty with both nations during his first term. But Trump warned that the new levy would “remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country” — sowing panic from Ottawa to Mexico City. Seconds later, another message from the incoming commander-in-chief turned the focus on Chinese imports, which he said would be hit with “an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs.” The consequences were immediate. Almost every major US automaker operates plants in Mexico, and shares in General Motors and Stellantis — which produce pickup trucks in America’s southern neighbor — plummeted. Canada, China and Mexico protested, while Germany called on its European partners to prepare for Trump to impose hefty tariffs on their exports and stick together to combat such measures. – Framing the debate – The tumult recalls Trump’s first term, when journalists, business leaders and politicians at home and abroad would scan their phones for the latest pronouncements, often long after they had left the office or over breakfast. During his first four years in the Oval Office, the tweet — in those days his newsy posts were almost exclusively limited to Twitter, now known as X — became the quasi-official gazette for administration policy. The public learned of the president-elect’s 2020 Covid-19 diagnosis via an early-hours post, and when Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander Qasem Soleimani was assassinated on Trump’s order, the Republican confirmed the kill by tweeting a US flag. The public and media learned of numerous other decisions big and small by the same source, from the introduction of customs duties to the dismissal of cabinet secretaries. It is not a communication method that has been favored by any previous US administration and runs counter to the policies and practices of most governments around the world. Throughout his third White House campaign, and with every twist and turn in his various entanglements with the justice system, Trump has poured his heart out on Truth Social, an app he turned to during his 20-month ban from Twitter. In recent days, the mercurial Republican has even named his attorney general secretaries of justice and health via announcements on the network. “He sees social media as a tool to shape and direct the national conversation and will do so again,” said political scientist Julian Zelizer, a Princeton University professor.
