Thirteen community organizations in Montreal's Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough had until 5 p.m. Friday to vacate their long-time home, but they refuse to pack up. Instead, they're fighting the eviction, which was ordered by the building's owner, the (CSSDM). The school service centre has been renting the space to the organizations for about 20 years, but now plans to use the property for a French-language learning centre Among the groups being evicted is (SNAC), which offered food assistance to 1,970 households over the last year, feeding nearly 4,000 people from their location in the C on Laverdure Street There is also an organization that supports people dealing with addiction, homelessness and mental health issues. There's a daycare and , a youth advocacy group, as well. There's even a francisation centre already on site, offering French-language classes. There are services for seniors, a meals-on-wheels program and educational services, too, said Rémy Robitaille, head of , the council representing the groups getting evicted "We won't move from here, even if they told us to move at 5 p.m. tonight," he said, noting the community groups are challenging the eviction in court. The organizations say they have nowhere to relocate after months of struggling to find something affordable. (Gabriel Guindi/CBC) The landlord, the CSSDM, said in a statement Friday that it is facing a sustained increase in educational needs in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville sector, particularly for francisation programs offered in adult education. At the same time, the , which houses the CSSDM's current francisation centre, is being renovated and the the programming there needs to be relocated to the , the statement said "To fulfil our primary mission of providing education and to avoid a service disruption in the absence of any other facility capable of accommodating all our students, we are compelled to reclaim full possession of the building," it said. Given Solidarité Ahuntsic's repeated refusals, since 2018, to sign a lease with the CSSDM, the organizations are currently occupying the premises under a month-to-month tolerance lease, the statement added. The eviction is a lawful step, the CSSDM said, and legal proceedings are ongoing. The council has refused rent increases for six years while the school service centre continues to pay electricity, heat and maintenance, it said. Several politicians have condemned the decision to force the groups out, including MNA Haroun Bouazzi, who represents the Maurice-Richard riding, which includes parts of Ahuntsic-Cartierville and Montréal-Nord. Bouazzi has called the eviction a disaster for the neighbourhood's social and community safety net, noting that 25,000 people rely on the organizations' services each year. Bouazzi is urging the (CAQ) government to intervene and grant a reprieve. He has been lobbying for the government to delay the eviction since the spring. Along with a petition, he submitted a detailed demand to the government, explaining the urgency of the situation, but said the only response he got was one deferring responsibility to the CSSDM. The CSSDM argues the eviction is necessary to provide French courses, but Bouazzi points out that French-language programming is already available there. Efforts to delay the eviction for three years have been supported by Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough mayor Émilie Thuillier and federal MP Mélanie Joly, who represents the riding of Ahuntsic-Cartierville. The three-year reprieve would allow the organizations to relocate to a new facility in the Écoquartier Louvain, a social development planned for the borough but for which construction has not begun. The development, which will include 800 to 1,000 housing units, is expected to accommodate co-operatives and a shared space for community groups as well. "All the community organizations will have a place together in the new centre, but we need time to build it," Thuillier said. In the meantime, officials are urging the Quebec government to give the CSSDM more funds so it can find more suitable premises for the francisation centre it wants to create. Bouazzi said the building is very old and that, before it can be used as a learning centre, it would need extensive renovations that would take four years — longer than the community groups need to relocate. "I am sure that what they want is noble and positive, but now that we understand the consequences, we have to stop this madness." Robitaille noted that the groups' trouble with their landlord began in 2022, when the CSSDM increased their rent by 200 per cent. The organizations attempted to refuse the rent increase, but the CSSDM threatened to sell the building. When the organizations offered to buy it, the service centre instead opted to retake it for educational purposes. Robitaille said it's not clear to him why the CSSDM wants to evict the organizations so soon. "It's strange they want to remove the francisation courses that we already give to around 400 people a year," he said, noting the renovations to get the building up to code will be costly, but the government has been cutting back on subsidies for . The Ministry of Education issued a statement Friday afternoon, saying the CSSDM owns the building and is responsible for its use, including surplus properties. PARKER — Magic may have touched Fairview football’s Class 5A quarterfinal game at EchoPark Stadium during last week’s stunner over No. 2 Mountain Vista, but on Saturday afternoon in the same location, it was the No. 7 Knights who were spellbound. Sixth-seeded Legend just proved too much to handle in the 35-21 finish, especially during the third quarter. The Knights played the Titans toe-to-toe, save for that 12-minute blip to start the second half. And with it, their 12-1 season came to a grinding halt as the Titans now move on to play No. 1 Cherry Creek in the title game next week. Prior to the start of this season, the Knights hadn’t won a playoff game since 2019. They made up for it by winning three. “We’ve had really good seasons the last few years, and so there was a hunger,” head coach Tom McCartney said. “The guys just didn’t want to be denied. They wanted to win their home playoff game. They wanted to show that they could beat one of the elite teams, so that kind of hunger and that kind of belief in each other carried us.” The Knights’ stars shined even in defeat, as they had through every victory leading up to the finale. Sophomore quarterback Ki Ellison put together a strong performance with 231 passing yards and touchdown passes to junior defensive back Toray Davis, who finished his afternoon with 49 offensive yards, and senior wide receiver Jordan Rechel. Rechel added another 123 yards. The score from Rechel down the stretch handed him his 29th touchdown of the season. He entered the contest tied for No. 1 in the state in that category. “Obviously with Jordan, the guy’s been a four-year starter,” McCartney said. “He led the state with touchdowns last year. He’s now leading the state again this year as a senior. He just finds ways to get in the end zone. He never comes off the field. He’s had a special four years and he’s going to be hard to replace, meaning you can’t replace someone like him. He’s a once-in-a-generation type player. He’s phenomenal.” Davis, he said, has an equally bright future ahead of him as he’s fielding Division-I offers left and right. He showcased why from the first snap. Davis kicked the game off with a 15-yard reception from Ellison in the corner of the end zone, but the Titans were quick to respond every time the Knights passed the pylon in the first half. Legend’s Ryken Banks put together his own receiving touchdown, this time on a monster 48-yard gain, just two minutes after the Knights first altered the scoreboard. Legend’s Aaron Carlson, having picked off Ellison’s short pass, sprinted 75 yards back toward the end zone. But just before he touched the line, Davis knocked the ball out of his hands, then recovered it in the end zone himself. “I looked back and I just saw he had the ball,” Davis said. “I knew I was the only one that would be able to catch him. I just had to hawk him down and punch the ball out.” Brock Kolstad pushed the Knights back into the lead with a short run into the end zone four minutes into the second quarter, but as the popular saying goes, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” That’s exactly what Legend did. Derek Neuenschwander made Ellison pay for his second mistake midway through the second, taking the interception a short distance back to score and draw the two teams at 14-14 going into the half. The Titans secured that disadvantage with a major defensive stop within the 5-yard line in the closing seconds of the first half, then flipped the script in the third quarter. Legend turned up the physicality coming out of the break, and punished the Knights for every missed tackle en route to a 28-14 lead heading into the final quarter. Ellison and Rechel helped stop the bleeding with a 35-yard connection in the final eight minutes, but the Knights couldn’t stop the Titans from touching the scoreboard one more time. Fairview’s season ended just one stop short of its first title game appearance since 2013, but this band of Knights achieved a feat that hadn’t been done in five years. Rechel, who said he’ll make his college decision in the next few months, wouldn’t trade the experience. “This team is very special,” he said. “I’ve never been a part of a team like this team. Things didn’t end the way that we wanted to, but just to be able to come out here and be on this field with this team, there’s just no other feeling compared to it. It’s just the brotherhood and the camaraderie and just everyone having each other’s backs. Essential to each of these roles, Grant’s charming smile and self-effacing mumble made him a heartthrob of the ’90s and ’00s. But a heartthrob is not exempt from their red flags. Like a wolf in a beloved Englishman’s clothing, Grant’s characters have always been more villainous than they appear. The actor’s breakthrough role as Charles in Four Weddings and a Funeral marked him as good-looking and disarmingly likable. Charles flipped a leading man’s role on his head, appearing as non-threatening and passive, his true motives often taking a backseat to politeness. However, for the friend who forgets rings, arrives late, pursues a woman in a relationship, and abandons his fiancée at the altar, suave and shy are not necessarily the first words that come to mind. Perhaps his most cardinal sin of all was committed in Notting Hill . How did he allow Julia Roberts walk out the door to be ambushed by the paparazzi?! Without her pants?! On multiple occasions, when given the opportunity to profess his feelings to his own heartthrob Anna (played by the real-life movie star Roberts), William chose silence and inaction. He even rejected Anna’s own proposal to pursue the relationship legitimately after he had spent an entire year forlorn about what could have been. Never establishing a backbone to communicate properly with the women he truly loves has perhaps been a throughline of Grant’s romantic career. Even his casting as Edward Farris in the 1995 Sense and Sensibility fits the bill, the price of his inactions and omissions being paid by the woman who loved him most. His most meaningful encounter in the film, in my opinion, came far too late. In the final act, Elinor Dashwood ( Emma Thompson ) realized that Farris had been engaged to and then married a woman of higher society. This was the engagement that Farris had failed to mention during the entirety of their courtship. The man was shelling out his monogrammed kerchiefs left and right. Unforgivable! Lastly, Curtis’ 2003 holiday rom-com Love Actually follows the love stories of 10 different individuals and those in their lives. “Love” is used liberally as Grant is one of the many male characters engaging in inappropriate romantic relationships with his own employees. Grant plays David, the Prime Minister, who initially resists the urge to act on his attraction to a junior member of staff, Natalie ( Martine McCutcheon ). While he presents himself as a moral politician, looking down on the U.S. President ( Billy Bob Thornton ) for making his own advances on Natalie, David acts on his attraction in the end nonetheless. While the pair ends up in a public, seemingly unproblematic relationship (for now) by the end of the film, we can’t overlook their checkered origins. Eventually, police officers rushed into the ugly scene. Ohio State coach Ryan Day said he understood the actions of his players. “There are some prideful guys on our team who weren't going to sit back and let that happen,” Day said. The two Ohio State players made available after the game brushed off questions about it. Michigan running back Kalel Mullings, who rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown, didn't like how the Buckeyes players involved themselves in the Wolverines' postgame celebration. The latest category of flyer applies to travellers who wait to book a seat until check-ins are almost closed in the hope of scoring the best available seats. That’s the coveted extra legroom chairs and roomy exit row aisles in most cases. According to Chelsea Dickenson, The Cheap Holiday Expert, leaving it last minute to check in online for a Wizz Air or Ryanair flight is usually a foolproof way to secure extra legroom or a seat up front. She claims these airlines, which charge extra to pre-book seats, split up parties travelling together by placing them “in the bad seats”, leaving the best spots on the plane up for grabs. In a TikTok video, Chelsea says: “Essentially, what they do is they palm off the middle seats or the back of the plane in the hope that you will then pay to change your seat and if you sit tight and wait, you will see that the only ones left are extra legroom seats and the ones at the front of the plane.” However, the last-minute strategy is, of course, not without risk for those who jump on the TikTok trend. The boarding hack works best when “chickens” keep a beady eye on the check-in seating plan throughout the day, Chelsea adds. Chelsea warns travellers playing chicken with check-in not to leave it until the last minute as an overbooked flight could leave you without a seat. “Wizz Air and Ryanair both have a fairly high average load factor - around 94% - and so planes are often close to full,” wrote the travel blogger. The “check-in chicken” boarding hack follows a crackdown on “gate lice” by American Airlines . AA announced this month that it is expanding its new technology to control “ gate lice ” – keen passengers with an itch to line up at the gate before they are called to board a flight. More than 100 airports across the US will now use the boarding tech over the busy Thanksgiving and Christmas travel period after successful trials in Albuquerque, Washington and Tucson last month . The new software will not accept the boarding pass of passengers before their group number is called and will make an audible sound to alert gate agents that they have broken boarding protocol. A message will also be displayed on the screen for airline staff, who can then instruct cutting-in customers to stand aside until their group is called to board. Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory ahead of the funeral of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, scheduled for Saturday. The traffic advisory outlines restrictions and diversions on major routes in New Delhi, urging the public to avoid certain roads and use public transport to help ease congestion. "The dignitaries of many of foreign country and other VIPs/VVIPS and the general public will visit Nigham Bodh Ghat on the occasion of state funeral of late Dr. Sh. Man Mohan Singh, Former PM of India on 28.12.2024," Delhi Traffic Police said in its advisory on Friday. According to the advisory, diversion points include Raja Ram Kohli Marg, Rajghat Red Light, Signature Bridge, and Yudhister Setu. Traffic restrictions, regulations, and diversion may be imposed on Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marg), Nishad Raj Marg, Boulevard Road, SPM Marg, Lothian Road, and Netaji Subhash Marg from 7.00 am onwards, likely till 3.00 pm. The advisory advises people to avoid the mentioned roads and stretches, as well as the area where the procession will take place. Commuters going to Old Delhi Railway Station, ISBT, Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, and Tis Hazari Court are advised to leave with sufficient time to accommodate possible delays on the route. "Dr Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister passed away at 9.51 PM on December 26, 2024 at AllMS Hospital, New Delhi. It has been decided by the Government that State funeral will be accorded to Dr Manmohan Singh. The funeral will take place at 11:45 AM on December 28, 2024 at Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi. The Ministry of Defence is requested to make arrangements for State funeral will full military honours," the MHA stated. Dr Manmohan Singh passed away at AIIMS, Delhi, on Thursday at the age of 92 due to age-related medical conditions. Dr Singh's political career spanned several decades, with notable positions including Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, during which he spearheaded economic reforms that transformed India's economy. He served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, succeeding Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His tenure is particularly remembered for his steady leadership during economic crises and his contributions to modernizing India's economy.
