A 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and prevent an artificial intelligence "dictatorship" is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker's ongoing shift into a for-profit company. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a nonprofit research lab benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. The world's richest man, whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX and social media platform X, last year started his own rival AI company, xAI. Musk says it faces unfair competition from OpenAI and its close business partner Microsoft, which has supplied the huge computing resources needed to build AI systems such as ChatGPT. “OpenAI and Microsoft together exploiting Musk’s donations so they can build a for-profit monopoly, one now specifically targeting xAI, is just too much,” says Musk's filing that alleges the companies are violating the terms of Musk’s foundational contributions to the charity. OpenAI is filing a response Friday opposing Musk’s requested order, saying it would cripple OpenAI’s business and mission to the advantage of Musk and his own AI company. A hearing is set for January before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland. At the heart of the dispute is a 2017 internal power struggle at the fledgling startup that led to Altman becoming OpenAI's CEO. Musk in an email outlined a plan where he would “unequivocally have initial control of the company” but said that would be temporary. He grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence , or AGI. Musk has long voiced concerns about how advanced forms of AI could threaten humanity. “The current structure provides you with a path where you end up with unilateral absolute control over the AGI," said a 2017 email to Musk from co-founders Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman. “You stated that you don't want to control the final AGI, but during this negotiation, you've shown to us that absolute control is extremely important to you.” In the same email, titled “Honest Thoughts,” Sutskever and Brockman also voiced concerns about Altman's desire to be CEO and whether he was motivated by “political goals.” Altman eventually succeeded in becoming CEO, and has remained so except for a period last year when he was fired and then reinstated days later after the board that ousted him was replaced. OpenAI published the messages Friday in a blog post meant to show its side of the story, particularly Musk's early support for the idea of making OpenAI a for-profit business so it could raise money for the hardware and computer power that AI needs. It was Musk, through his wealth manager Jared Birchall, who first registered “Open Artificial Technologies Technologies, Inc.”, a public benefit corporation, in September 2017. Then came the “Honest Thoughts” email that Musk described as the “final straw.” “Either go do something on your own or continue with OpenAI as a nonprofit,” Musk wrote back. OpenAI said Musk later proposed merging the startup into Tesla before resigning as the co-chair of OpenAI's board in early 2018. Musk didn't immediately respond to emailed requests for comment sent to his companies Friday. Asked about his frayed relationship with Musk at a New York Times conference last week, Altman said he felt “tremendously sad” but also characterized Musk’s legal fight as one about business competition. “He’s a competitor and we’re doing well,” Altman said. He also said at the conference that he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO’s influence with President-elect Donald Trump. OpenAI said Friday that Altman plans to make a $1 million personal donation to Trump’s inauguration fund, joining a number of tech companies and executives who are working to improve their relationships with the incoming administration. —————————— The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and technology agreement allowing OpenAI access to part of the AP’s text archives. How major US stock indexes fared Thursday, 11/21/2024

That buzzing coming out of New Jersey? It's unclear if it's drones or something else, but for sure the nighttime sightings are producing tons of talk, a raft of conspiracy theories and craned necks looking skyward. Cropping up on local news and social media sites around Thanksgiving, the saga of the drones reported over New Jersey has reached incredible heights. This week seems to have begun a new, higher-profile chapter: Lawmakers are demanding (but so far not getting) explanations from federal and state authorities about what's behind them. Gov. Phil Murphy wrote to President Joe Biden asking for answers. New Jersey's new senator, Andy Kim , spent Thursday night on a drone hunt in rural northern New Jersey, and posted about it on X. But perhaps the most fantastic development is the dizzying proliferation of conspiracies — none of which has been confirmed or suggested by federal and state officials who say they're looking into what's happening. It has become shorthand to refer to the flying machines as drones, but there are questions about whether what people are seeing are unmanned aircraft or something else. Some theorize the drones came from an Iranian mothership. Others think they are the Secret Service making sure President-elect Donald Trump’s Bedminster property is secure. Others worry about China. The deep state. And on. In the face of uncertainty, people have done what they do in 2024: Create a social media group. The Facebook page, New Jersey Mystery Drones — let’s solve it, has nearly 44,000 members, up from 39,000 late Thursday. People are posting their photo and video sightings, and the online commenters take it from there. One video shows a whitish light flying in a darkened sky, and one commenter concludes it’s otherworldly. “Straight up orbs,” the person says. Others weigh in to say it’s a plane or maybe a satellite. Another group called for hunting the drones literally, shooting them down like turkeys. (Do not shoot at anything in the sky, experts warn.) Trisha Bushey, 48, of Lebanon Township, New Jersey, lives near Round Valley Reservoir where there have been numerous sightings. She said she first posted photos online last month wondering what the objects were and became convinced they were drones when she saw how they moved and when her son showed her on a flight tracking site that no planes were around. Now she's glued to the Mystery Drones page, she said. “I find myself — instead of Christmas shopping or cleaning my house — checking it,” she said. She doesn't buy what the governor said, that the drones aren't a risk to public safety. Murphy told Biden on Friday that residents need answers. The federal Homeland Security Department and FBI also said in a joint statement they have no evidence that the sightings pose “a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.” “How can you say it’s not posing a threat if you don’t know what it is?” she said. “I think that’s why so many people are uneasy.” Then there's the notion that people could misunderstand what they're seeing. William Austin is the president of Warren County Community College, which has a drone technology degree program, and is coincidentally located in one of the sighting hotspots. Austin says he has looked at videos of purported drones and that airplanes are being misidentified as drones. He cited an optical effect called parallax, which is the apparent shift of an object when viewed from different perspectives. Austin encouraged people to download flight and drone tracker apps so they can better understand what they're looking at. Nonetheless, people continue to come up with their own theories. “It represents the United States of America in 2024,” Austin said. “We’ve lost trust in our institutions, and we need it.” Federal officials echo Austin's view that many of the sightings are piloted aircraft such as planes and helicopters being mistaken for drones, according to lawmakers and Murphy. That's not really convincing for many, though, who are homing in on the sightings beyond just New Jersey and the East Coast, where others have reported seeing the objects. For Seph Divine, 34, another member of the drone hunting group who lives in Eugene, Oregon, it feels as if it’s up to citizen sleuths to solve the mystery. He said he tries to be a voice of reason, encouraging people to fact check their information, while also asking probing questions. “My main goal is I don’t want people to be caught up in the hysteria and I also want people to not just ignore it at the same time,” he said. “Whether or not it’s foreign military or some secret access program or something otherworldly, whatever it is, all I’m saying is it’s alarming that this is happening so suddenly and so consistently for hours at a time,” he added. ___ Associated Press reporter Hallie Golden in Seattle contributed to this report.Indonesia had previously banned the Apple iPhone 16 series and it seems that the government is in no hurry to lift the ban on the Cupertino giant. According to the latest report it seems that the Apple’s addition promise to invest $100 million has not been accepted by the country. For those who are unknown, the total amount that apple has promised to invest in Indonesia is $110 million. As reported by Indonesian News Agency Antara, the Industry Ministry wants the investment to be larger. The increase in investment is expected to develop Indonesia’s domestic manufacturing sector and help the country to become a part of Apple’s global supply, mentioned ministry spokesperson Febri Hendri Antoni Arif. According to the Indonesian law, the foreign companies are expected to offer 40% local content in order to operate in the country. It is as a part of Domestic Component Level (TKDN) certification. The companies can comply with the above mentioned law by either manufacturing products locally, developing the software locally or by settings R&D centres. Apple has initially made an offer to invest more than IDR 1.71 trillion ($109 million) in local R&D facilities. However, it has only invested IDR 1.48 trillion ($95 million). It is reported that the Cupertino giant has made a decision to expand the manufacturing of accessories and components in Indonesia. This move will help the company in its business in the country. As of now, Apple is serving the ban on iPhone 16 as well as Apple Watch 10 series in Indonesia.
The Miami Dolphins ' final injury report of the week before their clash with the New York Jets saw the word "questionable" used more than fans would like. However, one player who's been on the report for weeks is finally set to play on Sunday. Starting CB Kendall Fuller has cleared concussion protocol, as evidenced by him practicing in full and avoiding a game status designation for Sunday. Fuller has been out for the last three games after suffering his second concussion of the season during the Dolphins' 23-15 win over the Los Angeles Rams last month. He missed Miami's wins over New England and Las Vegas as well as last Thursday's loss to Green Bay. His return comes at a key moment, as depth is a question at the position right now with Cam Smith going on injured reserve and nickel corner Kader Kohou dealing with a back injury that has him listed as questionable for Sunday. Speaking of questionable, Miami has seven players listed as questionable for Sunday, including OLBs Bradley Chubb and Cameron Goode, who returned to practice this week as they attempt to return from the PUP list. T Terron Armstead is also questionable, but he's managed to play so far this year without hardly practicing for much of it, so there's plenty of reason to believe he'll play on Sunday On the other side of the coin, the New York Jets will likely be without star CB Sauce Gardner and RB Breece Hall, a big blow on both sides of the ball to the Jets. Both players are listed as doubtful for the game, with LB C.J. Mosley having been ruled out. The Dolphins and Jets get underway on Sunday at 1:00 pm ET from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. With Jones considered day-to-day, after skating in his eighth straight game, Mancini was inserted right into the Rangers lineup Saturday night against the Oilers at Rogers Place. The 21-year-old Mancini was about to put on his skates for practice in Hartford when he heard he got the call from the Blueshirts. He checked out of his hotel, went to the airport, and after a few delays, he was off to Edmonton. Mancini didn’t check into his hotel until 3:30 a.m. “It’s going to be tough. It’s been kind of a crazy experience getting on a plane and coming all the way here,” the Rangers rookie said after morning skate. “Just make sure I get some rest in between now and the game. Obviously, they have a really good team, they have a lot of skilled forwards. So it’s going to be a real challenge, but I’m excited for that challenge. I think it’ll be good to see where I measure up.” The fact that the Rangers had Mancini haul out across the country to play against Edmonton, instead of just using Chad Ruhwedel, reveals that the organization considers the young blueliner to be the true seventh defenseman. After he played in nine of the Rangers’ first 10 games of the season, Mancini was scratched for four straight games before he was sent down. The Rangers wanted him to be playing instead of sitting in the press box. “He was here, he didn’t do anything to lose that spot, we just didn’t want him sitting here not playing games,” head coach Peter Laviolette said. “To keep him going and developing, he went back down to play games. Now he’s back. Rudy is a good defenseman for us, he’s played well. But the way it came out of camp, we were going with Vic at the time and I was upfront and honest and said if I could play seven I would, but we can’t. “We just didn’t want him sitting here doing nothing and so we sent him down to play games until we needed him again.” Filip Chytil skated with Ruhwedel after the team wrapped up morning skate. Despite joining the Rangers in Calgary after getting cleared of a concussion by specialists in New York, the Czech center did not dress for a fourth straight game. Jonathan Quick got the starting nod Saturday night against the Oilers, marking his fifth start of the season. Carrying in a shutout streak of 128:05, Quick aimed to secure his 398th career win.Melbourne Stars allrounder Hilton Cartwright feared he could be paralysed or face months in a neck brace after falling awkwardly in the BBL season opener. Cartwright sent a scare through Australian cricket last week, after falling awkwardly in the field in the Melbourne Stars’ season-opening loss to Perth. He was taken from the field in a neck brace and medicab, before being quickly cleared of any serious damage in hospital and being released back to Melbourne. More Cricket Incredibly, the former Test representative returned to play for the Stars just three days later against Brisbane, and has not missed a game yet this season. Speaking for the first time since the injury, Cartwright admitted his mind had spiralled quickly while laying on the turf with what was ultimately a case of whiplash. “It was an extraordinary series of events. It looked worse because there was no information surrounding it,” Cartwright said. “My neck pain had subsided quite a lot by the time I was on the sidelines, it was all on one side. Needless to say the doctors did a great job with how they handled it. “But my mind spun to the worst-case scenario about being paralysed, or strokes. “My mind was completely spinning. But thankfully I was home that night and I haven’t had any serious repercussions from it.” Hilton Cartwright is attended to by medical staff after injuring his neck while fielding. (Photo by Paul Kane/Getty Images) After diving for a ball in the outfield, Cartwright’s neck snapped back quickly and he was left to lay on the ground for close to five minutes while receiving medical attention. Adding to the concern was that the 32-year-old became a father for the second time in October, with another toddler also at home. “As soon as all that pain subsided I started thinking around all the short-term side effects,” the West Australian said. “Am I going to be in a neck brace for a couple of months whilst we have a newborn? “It would not only be tough on me, but tough on my partner. Thankfully everything got cleared and there were no issues. So far so good.” The batting allrounder said he had been able to class the incident as a “freak” accident, helping it not play on his mind while in the field since. Cartwright’s comments came as the Stars slumped to a fourth straight loss to start the season, with the Sydney Sixers chasing down 195 against them with 11 balls and two wickets to spare at the SCG. The Melbourne club will now likely need to win at least five of their last six to have any hope of making the finals, beginning with Saturday night against Brisbane. Otherwise, they risk missing for a fifth straight season. “If we’re being true to ourselves we want to win all six games to give ourselves a chance,” Cartwright said. The Governing Council of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has approved the promotion of 154 members of staff to various ranks. The deliberations so far are largely at the level of White House lawyers. But Biden himself has discussed the topic with some senior aides, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday to discuss the sensitive subject. No decisions have been made, the people said, and it is possible Biden opts to do nothing at all. Pardons are historically afforded to those accused of specific crimes – and usually those who have already been convicted of an offense — but Biden’s team is considering issuing them for those who have not even been investigated, let alone charged. They fear that Trump and his allies, who have boasted of enemies lists and exacting “retribution,” could launch investigations that would be reputationally and financially costly for their targets even if they don’t result in prosecutions. While the president’s pardon power is absolute, Biden’s use in this fashion would mark a significant expansion of how they are deployed, and some Biden aides fear it could lay the groundwork for an even more drastic usage by Trump. They also worry that issuing pardons would feed into claims by Trump and his allies that the individuals committed acts that necessitated immunity. Recipients could include infectious-disease specialist Dr. Anthony Fauci, who was instrumental in combating the coronavirus pandemic and who has become a pariah to conservatives angry about mask mandates and vaccines. Others include witnesses in Trump’s criminal or civil trials and Biden administration officials who have drawn the ire of the incoming president and his allies. Some fearful former officials have reached out to the Biden White House preemptively seeking some sort of protection from the future Trump administration, one of the people said. It follows Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter — not just for his convictions on federal gun and tax violations, but for any potential federal offense committed over an 11-year period, as the president feared that Trump allies would seek to prosecute his son for other offenses. That could serve as a model for other pardons Biden might issue to those who could find themselves in legal jeopardy under Trump. Biden is not the first to consider such pardons — Trump aides considered them for him and his supporters involved in his failed efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election that culminated in a violent riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. But he could be the first to issue them since Trump’s pardons never materialized before he left office nearly four years ago. Gerald Ford granted a “full, free, and absolute pardon” in 1974 to his predecessor, Richard Nixon, over the Watergate scandal. He believed a potential trial would “cause prolonged and divisive debate over the propriety of exposing to further punishment and degradation a man who has already paid the unprecedented penalty of relinquishing the highest elective office of the United States," as written in the pardon proclamation. Story continues below video Politico was first to report that Biden was studying the use of preemptive pardons. On the campaign trail, Trump made no secret of his desire to seek revenge on those who prosecuted him or crossed him. Trump has talked about “enemies from within" and circulated social media posts that call for the jailing of Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former Vice President Mike Pence and Sens. Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer. He also zeroed in on former Rep. Liz Cheney, a conservative Republican who campaigned for Harris and helped investigate Jan. 6, and he promoted a social media post that suggested he wanted military tribunals for supposed treason. Kash Patel, whom Trump has announced as his nominee to be director of the FBI, has listed dozens of former government officials he wanted to “come after.” Richard Painter, a Trump critic who served as the top White House ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush, said he was reluctantly in support of having Biden issue sweeping pardons to people who could be targeted by Trump's administration. He said he hoped that would “clean the slate” for the incoming president and encourage him to focus on governing, not on punishing his political allies. “It’s not an ideal situation at all,” Painter said. “We have a whole lot of bad options confronting us at this point.” While the Supreme Court this year ruled that the president enjoys broad immunity from prosecution for what could be considered official acts, his aides and allies enjoy no such shield. Some fear that Trump could use the promise of a blanket pardon to encourage his allies to take actions they might otherwise resist for fear of running afoul of the law. “There could be blatant illegal conduct over the next four years, and he can go out and pardon his people before he leaves office,” Painter said. "But if he’s going to do that, he’s going to do that anyway regardless of what Biden does." More conventional pardons from Biden, such as those for sentencing disparities for people convicted of federal crimes, are expected before the end of the year, the White House said.

The bereaved whale mother who made headlines when she heartbreakingly grieved her dead baby for more than two weeks has given birth to a new calf, scientists said. The mama orca, named J35 by researchers, was unable to let her calf go in 2018, carrying her baby’s lifeless body with her along a one-thousand-mile grief journey. But last Friday, scientists spotted the devoted mom with a new female calf in the Puget Sound, according to a Facebook post from the Center for Whale Research. By Monday scientists were confident the new little calf, called J61, belonged to J35. A nature enthusiast and photographer was excited when they realized they had photographed the tiny dorsal fin of the newborn peaking out of the water, according to CNN. “My first reaction to seeing the calf was complete shock. I was just looking through my photos to see who the whales were that passed close to the port side of the ferry I was on and noticed a much smaller dorsal on one of the photos,” the person told the news outlet. “As I scrolled through the series I realized it was very tiny calf, much smaller than any of the known young ones in the group. Based on the size and color of the calf, I realized it was a new calf and traveling with J35, my spark whale, the whale that started my obsession,” they said. The brand new baby will need help from her mom to survive the perilous first weeks of life for baby whales. “Early life is always dangerous for new calves, with a very high mortality rate in the first year. J35 is an experienced mother, and we hope that she is able to keep J61 alive through these difficult early days,” the Facebook post from the Center for Whale Research said. The calf was spotted being pushed around by her mom Tuesday and didn’t look lively, but the behavior of whale babies is not well understood, according to a post on X from the Orca Conservancy. Scientists said access to salmon, the whales’ main food source, is imperative for the survival of the large mammals. “Every single birth counts and these whales need enough fish to be able to support themselves and their calves,” the Center for Whale Research’s Facebook post said. This is the second baby J35 has given birth to since she famously lost her other baby in 2018. In 2020 J35 was seen with another newborn. The mother whale is part of a critically endangered pod of whales who live in the Pacific Northwest and roam the Pacific Ocean between Washington state and British Columbia. Killer whales have strong social ties and continue to help their children even after they are fully grown, according to researchers. As of December 2023, the J-pod of whales had 75 members, according to whale researchers who have been monitoring the pod of whales since the 1970s. Bucharest: Romania's constitutional court on Friday cancelled the country's presidential election following allegations of Russian interference in favour of the far-right frontrunner, just two days ahead of the run-off. Romania's pro-EU President Klaus Iohannis said he would stay in his post until a new government that emerges from legislative elections last weekend can be formed to set a new presidential election date. Romanian authorities intervened after far-right outsider Calin Georgescu topped the first round of the election on November 24, a shock result in the EU and NATO member bordering Ukraine. On Wednesday, the presidency declassified documents detailing allegations against Georgescu and Russia, including "massive" social media promotion and cyber-attacks. The court said it had unanimously decided "to annul the entire electoral process for the election of the president of Romania to ensure the correctness and legality of the electoral process." Georgescu, a former senior civil servant, had been due to face centrist mayor Elena Lasconi in Sunday's runoff. Lasconi, a former journalist, 52, called the court's decision "illegal, immoral... crushing the very essence of democracy". Fears had been raised that if Georgescu won, the country -- whose strategic importance has increased since Moscow invaded Ukraine -- would join the EU's far-right bloc and undermine European unity against Russia. While Bucharest streets were largely empty late Friday, without any protests taking place as far as AFP journalists could see, several people slammed the court's decision. "We are upset because this is a political game" to allow the losers to "get back in the game," said Marius Neagu, a 48-year-old salesman. Miruna Mihai, 25, said the decision "is a slap in the face of everyone who voted in this election" and risked "radicalising" Georgescu's supporters. Madalina Stroe, 34, working in the IT sector, welcomed it, however, saying she didn't want Romania "to go back in time to communism in case Georgescu was elected. I don't want us to lose our freedom". Outgoing Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu -- who lost in the first round of presidential elections -- welcomed the decision as "the only correct solution". Anti-corruption prosecutors on Friday said they have opened an investigation into "illegal operations with computer devices or software". Prosecutors are already probing "possible violations of electoral legislation" and "money laundering offences". In documents, drawn up for a security council meeting and published Wednesday, the authorities said data had "revealed an aggressive promotional campaign, in violation of electoral legislation, and an exploitation of algorithms to increase the popularity of Calin Georgescu at an accelerated pace". Last week authorities slammed "preferential treatment" of Georgescu by TikTok, which the social media platform has denied. The European Commission announced however that it had stepped up monitoring of TikTok's role in the elections. A separate intelligence services document stated that Romania is a "target for aggressive Russian hybrid actions, including cyberattacks and hacks and leaks and sabotage". On Monday, before the documents were released, Romania's constitutional court validated the first round presidential results. George Simion, leader of the far-right AUR party, slammed Friday's court ruling, calling it a "state coup in full swing", while urging party supporters to remain calm. Canceling the presidential elections is "an unprecedented and historic decision", political analyst Costin Ciobanu told AFP. It "deepens uncertainty and polarisation within Romanian society, raising serious concerns about the strength of Romania's institutions and democracy," he added. Georgescu, 62, shot into the limelight with his performance in the first round of voting. Having praised Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past, he has recently avoided answering questions about him being pro-Russian. A critic of the EU and NATO, he says he does not want to leave either group but wants to put Romania "on the world map". Like his idol US president-elect Donald Trump, he is opposed to military aid to Ukraine. While the president's post is largely ceremonial, the head-of-state has moral authority and influence on Romania's foreign policy. The president also designates the prime minister -- a key role especially since legislative elections last weekend returned a fragmented parliament. The governing pro-European Social Democrats won the vote, but far-right parties made strong gains, together securing a third of the ballots. Since the fall of Communism in 1989, Romania has never seen such a breakthrough by the far right, fuelled by mounting anger over soaring inflation and fears over Russia's war in neighbouring Ukraine.
Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Police in Wyoming are reminding residents to decorate their homes for Christmas instead of their vehicles after a driver was pulled over with their car illuminated by festive lights. The Wyoming Highway Patrol shared a photo on social media showing a Ford Mustang pulled over by a trooper who noticed the entire vehicle was decked out in colorful lights for the holidays. "As the holiday season approaches, we would like to remind you of a Wyoming statue," the post said. The statute in question states that "no person shall drive or move any vehicle or equipment upon any highway with any lamp or device thereon capable of displaying a red or blue light visible from directly in front of the center thereof." The post said that while decorating a car "might look cool and be festive, we would to remind you that it is illegal. Please remember to stay safe when celebrating this season!" Read More
