Despite these advancements, however, there is no denying that range anxiety remains an issue among EV users . German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz, seemingly, is working on a new technology that will not only increase the range of future battery-electric cars but will also further reduce the ever-pervasive range anxiety problem. The company's way around this problem, however, is a bit different. Instead of relying simply on larger, higher capacity, and more efficient batteries , Mercedes-Benz's Research and Development team is working on a new type of solar module that could integrate into the body of future cars, turning them, effectively, into a solar panel on four wheels . It is not like this idea hasn't already been tried, as some, might, remember the axed Lightyear 0, solar car . What makes these "in development" solar panels different from the current crop of photovoltaic cells is their extremely thin nature. Besides making them significantly less bulky than today's solar panels, these panels are thin enough to be integrated into the outer paint coating of the car, thereby earning them the name "solar paint." Under normal circumstances, the first point of discussion when talking about solar panels is their capacity, efficiency, and cost. In the case of the Mercedes Solar paint, the discussion first addresses the sheer thinness of the material. At just 5 micrometers, these panels make the average human hair seem like a log of wood. This sheer thinness also makes the material extremely lightweight — with an estimated weight of just 50 grams for every square meter. Additionally, Mercedes also claims that the "under-development" solar paint will be designed to be affixed on all kinds of substrates, making them flexible enough to be used on future electric vehicles. Perhaps the most striking fact about solar paint is the mere addition of this feature on future EVs will ensure that they could juice themselves up without the help of a charger. All these solar paint-toting cars need to do is simply remain outside in the parking lot while the car replenishes the battery using power from the Sun. Mercedes claims that these in-development solar cells will be designed to showcase a high-efficiency figure of 20%, which on a vehicle covering 118.4 square feet of space — the size of a modern-day mid-size SUV — could produce enough electricity to eke an additional 7,456 miles from the car without ever having to charge it. It is pertinent to note that despite being coated with solar paint, the primary means of charging future EVs will continue to be via electric chargers. Solar paint — at least the ones in development currently — is simply not powerful enough to juice up cars from 0 to 100%. If you are all gung-ho about the prospect of getting to test a Mercedes vehicle clad in solar paint, well, here's the all-important catch. In fact, this is not even a catch, given that we had already indicated that Mercedes' Research and Development team is still actively working on this project. This, unfortunately, also means that cars clad in solar paint are still science fiction stuff and are several years away from becoming reality. Nevertheless, given Mercedes-Benz's long and eventful history as one of the world's oldest surviving car brands, the company has a strong focus on innovation and research and development. In fact, the company can be attributed to kickstarting the modern-day automobile industry with its first-ever car, introduced in 1886. Since then, Mercedes has made several contributions to the world of automobiles, including innovations like supercharged engines, four-wheel independent suspension, the crumple zone, anti-lock braking system, electronic stability program, and the now common smart key. Google has named Debbie Weinstein, a senior executive for the tech giant in the UK, as its president in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Until now, Ms Weinstein has been the US firm’s vice president and managing director in the UK and Ireland, having previously worked at Unilever. She said her focus will be on “unlocking AI-powered growth for everyone”, calling the current AI boom a “pivotal” time for the tech giant. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity. AP: How did you approach this project? BURMAN: I would say from the beginning, the first thing I knew I wanted to do was find my story... the story that I wanted to tell about Tim. But the most important (aspect) was time. I wanted this to be a project with no time limits... I wanted it to be a slow process. And I wanted to have a lot of time for research. And the people close to Tim, I didn't want to force them into anything. I didn't want to push it. I wanted them to see and learn what I wanted to tell, you know, my story and my vision. AP: The structure is compelling; it really focuses on Avicii's life and his biggest songs that shifted genre - you avoid casting his career as "it was the 2010s and EDM was massive." There's a lot of research. BURMAN: I had access to a lot of material... I was looking for clues all the time... I've watched so, so many hours of, you know, interviews with Tim just to see, "OK, he says this again. And it was like the eighth time that year. OK. That should be important." ... It was kind of a puzzle and yeah, it was huge research work. There's a story in the film, in the beginning, from (when) he is a kid. He tells a story to the interviewer. And he says, "When I was a kid, I wasn't like a really nice person. For a few years, I was kind of bullying people. And I was around 6 or 7. And after a while I realized that people didn't like me, so after a summer, I was thinking about this, and I decided, 'I need to change... and see what happens.' And then people liked me again." And when he told that story, he was like, "That's a really important story. That's a story that needs to be in a documentary, if it's ever a documentary about me, because that says so much about me as a person." I was trying to find clues and stories and listen and... early on, I was quite sure that I wanted to tell the story from Miami Ultra (Music Festival) and what happened there. That was kind of a key moment for me, and that was a huge key moment for Tim. But when I realized that this... needs to be the center of my story, at the midpoint for my story, I realized that I had something to hold on to. AP: The childhood story reflects his interest in creative transformation, too. How do you aim to capture his spirit and not center his death? BURMAN: That is hard. I have from the beginning... tried to explain my vision for this film... But I reached out to a lot of friends, and of course his family, and I got their blessing. Here's why fans think the US series is not ending When I got this kind of group of people that said "yes" to being in the film that I could start to ask more questions and have deeper conversations. But again, we needed time... I wanted to work gently, that was very important. AP: And you have footage of Tim in the womb! It is very different than what could've very easily been an exploitative version of the film. BURMAN: I wanted to make an intimate and personal story and not speculate... to find the right tone, you need time. And since we started work... one, one-and-a-half years after Tim passed, I just knew that we needed time. And, of course, people around Tim needed a lot of time. AP: What is Avicii's legacy? BURMAN: You can answer that question in so many ways. But if you're talking about the music, and the music that he produced and wrote, he was so much ahead of his time, I would say. And you can hear the legacy of Avicii in the music today. You can hear it in the production in new music and hits from today. If you listen to the music - go back and listen to the music now that he released like 10 years ago, it sounds so fresh, modern, and I would say timeless. AP: What do you hope viewers take away from this film? BURMAN: Someone said to me that the film is so much about Tim, but at the same time, it's so kind of universal. And I thought that was beautiful because life is not simple. There are no easy answers. And everything is complex and multilayered. So, that's what I aim to contribute to Tim's story. The world’s oldest known wild bird has sparked “special joy” among scientists after she laid an egg – her first in four years – at the age of 74. Wisdom, a Laysan albatross, was spotted with the egg and a new partner last week at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, an island sanctuary located on the far northern end of the Hawaiian archipelago. “She did it again!” the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) for the Pacific Region exclaimed on social media platform X. Jon Plissner, supervisory wildlife biologist at Wildlife Refuge, said he and his team were “optimistic that the egg will hatch” and that Wisdom would be fit enough to raise another chick. “A special joy,” he called Wisdom’s achievement. A video posted on USFWS’ Facebook page showed Wisdom rubbing her head against her new partner before he sat down to incubate the egg. Biologists spotted Wisdom at Midway Atoll in 2001 with a red band around her leg that they later discovered was placed there by the late renowned ornithologist Chandler Robbins in 1956. USFWS estimates that the bird has produced up to 60 eggs and mothered as many as 30 chicks in her lifetime. For decades, she returned to the island with the same partner, Akeakamai, but he has not been seen since at least 2021. Experts tagged her new mate last week after spotting them together. Laysan albatrosses live between 12 and 40 years. Many die after mistakenly swallowing colorful plastic, which they think is food in the sea. Wisdom has intrigued biologists who are desperate to find out how she manages to live such a long life and still have babies. Each year, millions of albatrosses return to Midway Atoll to nest and raise their young, according to USFWS. The mating season is between October and November, and the species often spends a little more than half of the year at the refuge, incubating and raising their chick. During that time, they fly thousands of miles across the ocean for food to get back to their babies. As arduous and dangerous as the trip was, Rasoulof’s travels had an added wrinkle: He was trying to finish a movie at the same time. A week after arriving in Germany, Rasoulof would premiere his film, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” at the Cannes Film Festival in France. As he fled, Rasoulof was preoccupied with the movie’s edit, which was being carried out in Germany. “I remember when I was sitting in the car that was driving me to the border,” Rasoulof says. “I had my laptop and I was taking notes and sending them to my editor. The two friends who were taking me kept saying, ‘Put that thing away for a second.’” In Cannes, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” won a special jury prize and Rasoulof was celebrated with a 13-minute standing ovation. The movie has since been hailed as one of the best of the year, and arguably its most daring. Rasoulof made “Sacred Fig” clandestinely in Iran, directing scenes from a separate location to avoid raising suspicions. (The opening titles read: “When there is no way, a way must be made.”) Its story — a devastating family drama set during the 2022 protests that engulfed Iran — would surely only add to Rasoulof’s prison sentence. So after all of this, how is he feeling? When he recently met with The Associated Press for an interview, Rasoulof shrugged. “Ordinary,” he says. Rasoulof, 52, has a more gentle, bemused presence than some of his films would suggest. But how could Rasoulof, after what he’s lived through this year, feel anything like ordinary? “I still haven’t grasped the meaning of exile,” he explains. “I think it will take some time. The feeling of that void has not hit me yet, and I think it may never come.” Rasoulof has been busy traveling from film festival to film festival. In September, he and his 24-year-old daughter attended the Telluride festival in Colorado. Many more such stops were to come. Since fleeing Iran, Rasoulof has effectively been immersed in the world he’s long known: cinema. “Maybe I am living in the world of cinema, and maybe that’s why things are so familiar,” he agrees. “Maybe that’s why I don’t feel I’m in exile.” “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” currently playing in theaters, is the Oscar submission from Rasoulof’s adoptive home, Germany. He’s settled in with his family, grateful for how the country has welcomed him. Speaking through an interpreter, Rasoulof grants that he’ll probably always mentally have a bag packed, ready to return to Iran should the chance ever come. But what “home” constitutes has changed for him. “I might be able to change this concept of home for myself,” he says. “I walk on the streets here and I see people of different colors and forms from all over the place, and they all call this place home. So there’s always the chance that one can build something new.” How oppressive politics can infiltrate the home is central to “The Seed of the Sacred Fig.” It concerns a family of four: Iman (Missagh Zareh), a lawyer newly appointed to the Revolutionary Court in Tehran; his wife, Najmeh (Soheila Golestani) and their two daughters, Rezvan (Mahsa Rostami) and Sana (Setareh Maleki). Iman is proud of his high position, but, when the government crackdown on protesters following the death of Mahsa Amini accelerates, his daughters are increasingly at odds with him. After Iman's gun goes missing, his wife and daughters turn into suspects. “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” populated with real cellphone videos from the protests, plays out as an excruciating microcosm of Iranian society. “It wasn’t like I put those videos in. They just came in,” says Rasoulof. “The reality is that it was through those videos I realized what happened. When the Woman, Life, Freedom movement occurred, I was in prison.” Rasoulof has spent several spells in Tehran’s Evin Prison. In 2010, he was arrested on set for filming without a permit. In 2022, he was jailed for seven months after pursuing the release of another of Iran’s most prominent filmmakers, Jafar Panahi. Panahi, who secretly made the film “No Bears,” was only released in 2023 after commencing a hunger strike. “My windows at home opened to the hills that have the Evin prison in them,” says Rasoulof. “I knew behind those walls many of my friends were sitting.” Rasoulof, inspired by the courage of the younger generation, resolved to pour the same spirit into “The Seed of the Sacred Fig.” Although it wasn’t until Rasoulof’s appeal of his sentence failed that he resolved to flee, he grants that deciding to make “Sacred Fig” essentially sealed his fate. “Making this film was part of that decision,” he says. “Although I had made up my mind earlier, because it was such a bitter decision, I was denying it and delaying it, waiting for a miracle to allow me to stay.” “I would open the fridge to make sure there was nothing there that would go bad,” he adds. “It was a strange circumstance.” For the film's actors and crew members, signing up for the movie meant also becoming co-conspirators. Everyone knew the risks. And, like Rasoulof, many of them have since left Iran. Rostami and Maleki also now live in Germany. Asked if his collaborators are all currently safe, Rasoulof responds: “No one is safe from the Islamic Republic.” In his new life, Rasoulof is experiencing freedoms he never had in Iran. His films, for example, are widely available outside his native country but not in Iran. His prize-winning 2020 drama “There Is No Evil,” about capital punishment in Iran, is banned — though, ironically, Rasoulof’s prison guards enjoyed watching it with him from a flash drive. “I haven’t seen many of my films on a big screen, especially my last film,” he says. “I really want to see ‘There Is No Evil’ on a big screen. A festival in Portugal has promised to take me to see my own film.” The name of Rasoulof’s film comes from his memory of an ancient fig tree he once visited on an island in the south of Iran. It’s a tree that, with apparent metaphorical meaning for the Iranian government, spreads its seeds onto other trees, killing them and growing in their place. Rasoulof pulls out his phone to share a photo of his apartment in Tehran. Outside a large window, you can see the walls of Evin running along a craggy hillside. Inside are many houseplants. “This is my home,” he says. “I have a lot of plants. I really miss my plants. I have a neighbor who takes care of them for me. I actually have a fig tree at home.”
