While these initiatives have sparked controversy, they underline India’s efforts to balance national security with humanitarian obligations. India’s experience shows the importance of fair and effective solutions. India-U.S. collaboration India and the U.S. could benefit significantly from a coordinated approach to immigration policy. By sharing best practices and intelligence, both countries can better address security concerns, streamline legal migration, and reduce incentives for illegal immigration. India’s role at the United Nations India’s influence at the United Nations positions it to advocate global solutions to illegal immigration. India can propose resolutions that emphasise border security, fair treatment of migrants, and efficient repatriation processes. Leading efforts to create internationally agreed protocols, India can play a central role in fostering a migration system that is both secure and humane. By collaborating with nations that frequently receive Indian migrants, such as the U.S. and European countries, India can establish clear, lawful migration pathways and work towards combating human trafficking and illegal immigration networks. Phony reviews have long plagued many popular consumer websites, such as Amazon and Yelp. They are typically traded on private social media groups between fake review brokers and businesses willing to pay. Sometimes, such reviews are initiated by businesses that offer customers incentives such as gift cards for positive feedback. But AI-infused text generation tools, popularized by OpenAI’s ChatGPT , enable fraudsters to produce reviews faster and in greater volume, according to tech industry experts. The deceptive practice, which is illegal in the U.S. , is carried out year-round but becomes a bigger problem for consumers during the holiday shopping season , when many people rely on reviews to help them purchase gifts. Fake reviews are found across a wide range of industries, from e-commerce, lodging and restaurants, to services such as home repairs, medical care and piano lessons. The Transparency Company, a tech company and watchdog group that uses software to detect fake reviews, said it started to see AI-generated reviews show up in large numbers in mid-2023 and they have multiplied ever since. For a report released this month, The Transparency Company analyzed 73 million reviews in three sectors: home, legal and medical services. Nearly 14% of the reviews were likely fake, and the company expressed a “high degree of confidence” that 2.3 million reviews were partly or entirely AI-generated. “It’s just a really, really good tool for these review scammers,” said Maury Blackman, an investor and advisor to tech startups, who reviewed The Transparency Company’s work and is set to lead the organization starting Jan. 1. In August, software company DoubleVerify said it was observing a “significant increase” in mobile phone and smart TV apps with reviews crafted by generative AI. The reviews often were used to deceive customers into installing apps that could hijack devices or run ads constantly, the company said. The following month, the Federal Trade Commission sued the company behind an AI writing tool and content generator called Rytr, accusing it of offering a service that could pollute the marketplace with fraudulent reviews. The FTC, which this year banned the sale or purchase of fake reviews, said some of Rytr’s subscribers used the tool to produce hundreds and perhaps thousands of reviews for garage door repair companies, sellers of “replica” designer handbags and other businesses. Max Spero, CEO of AI detection company Pangram Labs, said the software his company uses has detected with almost certainty that some AI-generated appraisals posted on Amazon bubbled up to the top of review search results because they were so detailed and appeared to be well thought-out. But determining what is fake or not can be challenging. External parties can fall short because they don’t have “access to data signals that indicate patterns of abuse,” Amazon has said. Pangram Labs has done detection for some prominent online sites, which Spero declined to name due to non-disclosure agreements. He said he evaluated Amazon and Yelp independently. Many of the AI-generated comments on Yelp appeared to be posted by individuals who were trying to publish enough reviews to earn an “Elite” badge, which is intended to let users know they should trust the content, Spero said. The badge provides access to exclusive events with local business owners. Fraudsters also want it so their Yelp profiles can look more realistic, said Kay Dean, a former federal criminal investigator who runs a watchdog group called Fake Review Watch. To be sure, just because a review is AI-generated doesn’t necessarily mean its fake. Some consumers might experiment with AI tools to generate content that reflects their genuine sentiments. Some non-native English speakers say they turn to AI to make sure they use accurate language in the reviews they write. “It can help with reviews (and) make it more informative if it comes out of good intentions,” said Michigan State University marketing professor Sherry He, who has researched fake reviews. She says tech platforms should focus on the behavioral patters of bad actors, which prominent platforms already do, instead of discouraging legitimate users from turning to AI tools. Prominent companies are developing policies for how AI-generated content fits into their systems for removing phony or abusive reviews. Some already employ algorithms and investigative teams to detect and take down fake reviews but are giving users some flexibility to use AI. Spokespeople for Amazon and Trustpilot, for example, said they would allow customers to post AI-assisted reviews as long as they reflect their genuine experience. Yelp has taken a more cautious approach, saying its guidelines require reviewers to write their own copy. “With the recent rise in consumer adoption of AI tools, Yelp has significantly invested in methods to better detect and mitigate such content on our platform,” the company said in a statement. The Coalition for Trusted Reviews, which Amazon, Trustpilot, employment review site Glassdoor, and travel sites Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com launched last year, said that even though deceivers may put AI to illicit use, the technology also presents “an opportunity to push back against those who seek to use reviews to mislead others.” “By sharing best practice and raising standards, including developing advanced AI detection systems, we can protect consumers and maintain the integrity of online reviews,” the group said. The FTC’s rule banning fake reviews, which took effect in October, allows the agency to fine businesses and individuals who engage in the practice. Tech companies hosting such reviews are shielded from the penalty because they are not legally liable under U.S. law for the content that outsiders post on their platforms. Tech companies, including Amazon, Yelp and Google, have sued fake review brokers they accuse of peddling counterfeit reviews on their sites. The companies say their technology has blocked or removed a huge swath of suspect reviews and suspicious accounts. However, some experts say they could be doing more. “Their efforts thus far are not nearly enough,” said Dean of Fake Review Watch. “If these tech companies are so committed to eliminating review fraud on their platforms, why is it that I, one individual who works with no automation, can find hundreds or even thousands of fake reviews on any given day?” Consumers can try to spot fake reviews by watching out for a few possible warning signs , according to researchers. Overly enthusiastic or negative reviews are red flags. Jargon that repeats a product’s full name or model number is another potential giveaway. When it comes to AI, research conducted by Balázs Kovács, a Yale professor of organization behavior, has shown that people can’t tell the difference between AI-generated and human-written reviews. Some AI detectors may also be fooled by shorter texts, which are common in online reviews, the study said. However, there are some “AI tells” that online shoppers and service seekers should keep it mind. Panagram Labs says reviews written with AI are typically longer, highly structured and include “empty descriptors,” such as generic phrases and attributes. The writing also tends to include cliches like “the first thing that struck me” and “game-changer.”

Landeros, the organization’s departing president and CEO, accepted two gifts — tan cowboy boots embroidered with the chamber’s logo and a white Texas Rangers World Series baseball jersey emblazoned with her last name and the No. 1 — from board members at the end of a chamber luncheon Dec. 6. The chamber’s accomplishments and goals were highlighted in the 2024 State of the Chamber address by Landeros, who will become chief strategic officer for Trinity Metro, the Fort Worth-area transit agency . She officially exits the chamber on Dec. 13 and starts her new job on Dec. 16. “I’m excited to move on to my next journey,” she said. The chamber event, held at the Sheraton Fort Worth Downtown Hotel, attracted hundreds of people, including several City Council members and local business leaders, as Landeros recapped her five years as head of the organization — and announced future events that will highlight the city’s Latino leadership and businesses. During Landeros’ tenure, the chamber also launched the Hencho en Fort Worth — Spanish for “Made in Fort Worth” — campaign to spotlight local businesses, fostered scholarships for the master of business administration degree program at Texas Christian University, and created a summer music series and the Northside Posadas Artisan Mercado. The mercado will welcome visitors on three Saturdays this month, including Dec. 7, Dec. 14 and Dec. 21, at 1420 N. Main St. The chamber also created a publication to celebrate the organization’s 50th anniversary, held its first Fourth of July fireworks show on the Northside, and opened a multimedia room for community members to create content free of charge. “We’re really excited about that,” Landeros said. She also highlighted the chamber’s goals for 2025, which include reimagining chamber events and programs, strengthening member relations, advocating for members during the upcoming Texas legislative session, and growing Northside through economic development efforts. Northside sits between the area north of downtown targeted for Panther Island development and the bustling Stockyards district. Landeros has led the charge to include Northside residents and Hispanic entrepreneurs in discussions about economic development and gentrification resulting from Panther Island. The biggest goal, Landeros said, is a seamless leadership transition as the search for her replacement starts up. “We have officially engaged a search firm,” Landeros told the Fort Worth Report. “The executive board decided to go ahead and make the investment in a formal search firm, assisting the chamber through this transition. Primarily, because we recognize that it is kind of a vital position, not only for the organization, but for the Latino community in general in terms of the chamber playing just a strong role in the voice for the community.” The chamber’s search for a new president and CEO — officially opened for about a week — already attracted over 60 candidates, Landeros said. “Our board members and myself are fielding any phone calls or questions people may have on the position,” she said. “I’ve had a few people reach out to me on what that demand is on a personal life. We’re very open and transparent about that.” The chamber, she said, is “just trying to be a welcoming organization that is excited about their next leader. “So hopefully lots of amazing, qualified candidates apply,” Landeros said. “My dream is that we have just a wealth of talent that is competing for this role. PAGBABAGO Ten years ago, an ASEAN regional workshop on journalism curriculum was held in the country. Organized by the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) and the UNESCO National Commission, the workshop was held in partnership with the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE), the Embassy of Canada, Commission on Higher Education Technical Committee, UP College of Mass Communication, St. Theresa’s College of Cebu, and Philippine Star. Earlier initiatives included an Experts’ Consultative Meeting on Journalism Education held in Paris in 2008 and two experts’ consultative meetings involving all regions of the world. The draft curricula was formally presented at the 2007 joint meetings in Singapore by the World Journalism Education Congress andAsian Media and Information Center (AMIC). Already, there was recognition of the tremendous impact of the new information technology. Change was shown in the practice of journalism, specifically in information generation, processing and delivery and exchange. No longer do we talk about print, radio or TV journalism but content, format, and processes. Convergence made it imperative for traditionally trained journalists to collaborate with emergent journalists in cyberspace – bloggers, vloggers, and members of networks. Journalism education must demonstrate a multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral approach in training and content development. The new model curricula recognizes that journalists and information professionals must be trained to become listeners, mediators, catalysts. They must be able to “triangulate” the views from above, below, and from a variety of sectors. It was also recognized that journalism curricula must operate in a “democratic” environment and within a culture of tolerance and peace. I then equated the process of information handling and transformation to that of a painter handling a brush. The new journalist and painter starts by allowing his values, intuition, passion guide the flow of words or stroke of the brush. The new curricula is built on these three lines – an axis representing the norms, values, tools, standards; the social, cultural, political economic, legal and ethical aspects within the national borders; and an axis focused on knowledge of the world and the new intellectual challenges. What then is new? At the second session series of community journalism knowledge sharing held last week, Fr. Benigno Beltran, founder of the Sandiwaan Center of Learning presented how his learning approach based on the convergence model of solidarity (collaboration), integrity (truth, transparency, empathy), and creativity (learning to work with the new media of AI and new information technology), can be tailored for the training of “digital natives.” Can we build a new approach that is responsive, rights-based, and community-centered in journalism education? The new model, which is based on democratic values and sustainable development, must inspire and ignite the values and mindsets needed to “light the fire,” awaken the learner’s passion and ensure that he/she can become a catalyst of freedom of expression and change in the communities. The Community Journalism Scholarship Fund, which started this year with six scholars one each from Mindanao State University in Marawi, University of Mindanao in Davao City, Silliman University, Visayas State University, Bicol University, and the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC), participated in the monthly zoom meet by sharing stories of innovations at their respective institutions and communities. The scholarship for two years includes costs for school fees, books and learning materials, internship and mentors’ fees. Scholars were chose on the basis of academic performance need, and leadership criteria. About the same time the #FreeLuigi memes featuring the mustachioed plumber from “Super Mario Brothers” mushroomed online, commenters shared memes showing Tony Soprano pronouncing Luigi Mangione , the man charged with murdering the UnitedHealthcare CEO in Manhattan , a hero. There were posts lionizing Mangione’s physique and appearance, the ones speculating about who could play him on “Saturday Night Live,” and the ones denouncing and even threatening people at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s for spotting him and calling police. It was all too much for Pennsylvania’s governor, a rising Democrat who was nearly the vice presidential nominee this year. Josh Shapiro — dealing with a case somewhere else that happened to land in his lap — decried what he saw as growing support for “vigilante justice.” The curious case of Brian Thompson and Luigi Mangione captivated and polarized a media-saturated nation. It also offers a glimpse into how, in a connected world, so many different aspects of modern American life can be surreally linked — from public violence to politics, from health care to humor (or attempts at it) . It summons a question, too: How can so many people consider someone a hero when the rules that govern American society — the laws — are treating him as the complete opposite? Writings found in Mangione’s possession hinted at a vague hatred of corporate greed and an expression of anger toward “parasitic” health insurance companies. Bullets recovered from the crime scene had the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose,” reflecting words used by insurance industry critics, written on them. On Monday, Shapiro took issue with comments like those. It was an extraordinary moment that he tumbled into simply because Mangione was apprehended in Pennsylvania. Shapiro’s comments — pointed, impassioned and, inevitably, political — yanked the conversation unfolding on so many people’s phone screens into real life. “We do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint,” the governor said. “In a civil society, we are all less safe when ideologues engage in vigilante justice.” But to hear some of his fellow citizens tell it, that’s not the case at all. Like Bonnie and Clyde, John Dillinger, D.B. Cooper and other notorious names from the American past, Mangione is being cast as someone to admire. Regina Bateson, an assistant political science professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has studied vigilantism, the term to which Shapiro alluded. Tim Anderson’s wife, Mary, dealt with UnitedHealthcare coverage denials before she died from Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2022. “The business model for insurance is don’t pay,” Anderson, 67, of Centerville, Ohio, told The Associated Press . The discourse around the killing and Mangione is more than just memes. Conversations about the interconnectedness of various parts of American life are unfolding online as well. One Reddit user said he was banned for three days for supporting Kyle Rittenhouse, who was acquitted after testifying he acted in self-defense when he fatally shot two people in 2020 during protests. “Do you think people are getting banned for supporting Luigi?” the poster wondered. The comments cover a lot of ground. They include people saying the UnitedHealthcare slaying isn’t a “right or left issue” and wondering what it would take to get knocked off the platform. “You probably just have to cross the line over into promoting violence,” one commenter wrote. “Not just laughing about how you don’t care about this guy.”
