On Thursday, FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel announced that the agency would also act "urgently" to ensure that American telecom carriers are required to secure their networks. The Salt Typhoon telecom breaches CISA and the FBI confirmed the hacks in late October following reports that Chinese threat actors had hacked multiple telcos , including T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies. Even though the timing of these breaches is still unclear, the Chinese hackers had access for "months or longer." This reportedly allowed them to steal substantial internet traffic from carriers providing services to American businesses and millions of customers. Last week, President Biden's deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger told reporters during a Wednesday press briefing that the Salt Typhoon hacking group breached eight U.S. telecoms and carriers in dozens of other countries. The White House official said that "at this time, we don't believe any classified communications have been compromised," while a senior CISA official added in a Tuesday press call that they couldn't "say with certainty that the adversary has been evicted." CISA and FBI officials also advised Americans to use encrypted messaging apps to minimize the risk of communications interception by Chinese hackers and released guidance to help telecom infrastructure system admins and engineers harden systems against Salt Typhoon attacks. Also tracked as Earth Estries, Ghost Emperor, FamousSparrow, and UNC2286, the Salt Typhoon Chinese state-sponsored hacking group has been active since at least 2019, breaching government entities and telecom companies across Southeast Asia.

Google on Monday showed off a new quantum computing chip that it said was a major breakthrough that could bring practical quantum computing closer to reality. A custom chip called "Willow" does in minutes what it would take leading supercomputers 10 septillion years to complete, according to Google Quantum AI founder Hartmut Neven. Neven's team of about 300 people at Google is on a mission to build quantum computing capable of handling otherwise unsolvable problems like safe fusion power and stopping climate change. A quantum computer that can tackle these challenges is still years away, but Willow marks a significant step in that direction, according to Neven and members of his team. While still in its early stages, scientists believe that superfast quantum computing will eventually be able to power innovation in a range of fields. Quantum research is seen as a critical field and both the United States and China have been investing heavily in the area, while Washington has also placed restrictions on the export of the sensitive technology. (AP) — Alex Ovechkin has not missed many games during his two decades in the NHL with the Washington Capitals, and that remarkable durability is one reason why he is fast-approaching Wayne Gretzky's career goals record. The Capitals had lost 33 of their 59 games without Ovechkin in the lineup during his first 19 seasons, including 23 of 36 over the past decade. In stark contrast to that, they've won six of nine since the 39-year-old captain was sidelined by a broken left fibula — a testament to a roster built not only to help him break the record but prepare the organization for the post-Ovechkin era. “Ovi, he’s a legend, he’s special, he’s always going to probably lead the team in goals and we’re a better team with him, but we’re also a team where I think we’re not necessarily maybe relying on one or two players to win games,” said center Lars Eller, who rejoined the team in a trade from Pittsburgh a month ago. “We have four pretty strong lines, three D pairs and two good goalies. But I think the way that our team’s built is depth, and that’s been our strength this year is kind of contributions from everybody.” Ovechkin led all players with 15 goals when he went down, and the Capitals were the high-scoring team in the league at 4.33 goals a game.
