India will launch an ambitious space docking test flight on Monday (Dec. 30) that could set the stage for a future mission to the moon. The India Space Research Organisation will launch the two small satellites of its Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) atop an Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle on Monday. Liftoff is set for 11:28 a.m. EST (9:58 p.m. IST, 1628 GMT) from ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. You can watch the SpaDeX mission launch live online via ISRO's YouTube livestream , which is expected to begin at 11 a.m. EST (1600 GMT). The SpaDeX mission will launch two satellites, a Target and a Chaser, on a mission to test autonomous docking technology in orbit. But ISRO hopes to do more than just test automatic docking gear. The mission also includes a secondary payload module with 24 different experiments aboard, including a small robotic arm. Scientists hope to test the arm and other payloads after docking in a payload operations demonstration, and also test dual spacecraft control and power transfer between the docked spacecraft. "This technology is essential for India's space ambitions such as Indian on Moon, sample return from the Moon , the building and operation of Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), etc.," ISRO officials wrote in an mission overview , using the official name to India's planned space station . "In-space docking technology is essential when multiple rocket launches are required to achieve common mission objectives." The docking technology will be vital ISRO's planned Chandrayaan-4 mission to the moon, which aims to return samples to Earth from the lunar south pole. A sample-return vehicle will have to dock in lunar orbit to transfer to sample to a return capsule. The ability to dock autonomously is also required for space station construction and operation as ISRO develops its human spaceflight program . The SpaDeX docking demonstation is expected to take place in early 2025 while the Target and Chaser spacecraft fly in low Earth orbit 290 miles (470 kilometers) above Earth. The two spacecraft, each weighing 485 pounds (220 kilograms), are expected to test rendezvous operations from as far apart as just over 12 miles (20 km), with the Chaser vehicle approaching closer over time for the final docking. "After successful docking and rigidization, electrical power transfer between the two satellites will be demonstrated before undocking and separation of the two satellites to start the operation of their respective payloads for the expected mission life of up to two years," ISRO officials said in the mission overview. That two-year mission will include a series of tests of the 24 payloads aboard the SpaDex spacecraft. Fourteen of the experiments were developed by ISRO officials, with the remaining 10 being flown for universities and commercial startups. The ISRO payloads include novel technologies for the space agency, such as a "walking robotic arm" that can move end over end like an inchworm, similar to the CanadArm2 robotic arm on the International Space Station . There is also a "Debris Capture Robotic Manipulator, a robotic arm that will attempt to catch tethered "debris" in a space junk cleanup test. You can see a full list of the different payloads on the ISRO mission site here . The non-docking payloads are flying on SpaDeX aboard ISRO's PS4-Orbital Experiment Module, or POEM-4, which "the scientific community to carry out certain in-orbit microgravity experiments for an extended duration of up to three months," ISRO officials wrote. ISRO's SpaDex launch is expected to be the final rocket launch of 2024. It follows on the heels of a three Falcon 9 rocket launches in three days by SpaceX .Preview: Bayer Leverkusen vs. Heidenheim - prediction, team news, lineups

Bengaluru: Sustainability is no longer a choice, but a necessity as the world grapples with consequences of climate change and resource depletion. Bengaluru, known for its innovation and vibrant community spirit, is leading the way in embracing sustainable practices . From startups promoting circular economies and eco-conscious technologies to architects conserving heritage and artists embracing sustainable materials, a few firms in the city are setting an example for urban resilience and environmental responsibility. Eco Dhaga collected around 6,800 kilograms of post-consumer textiles recently. The used or discarded clothes were recycled and turned into funky table mats and coasters. "It also enabled us to reduce landfill waste," said Sanjana Swaroop, founder of Eco Dhaga. Sanjana was talking about circular economy and what her organisation has been doing in the space at a panel discussion on sustainable designs, moderated by MXR co-founder Madan Mohan Rao at M Cube Spaces here on Saturday. "Fashion industry is one of the largest polluters. We are trying to create awareness on what you can do to improve the environment with your closet itself," said Sanjana. Some startups like Reusall are coming up with a software solutions for resuablity. "We are creating an intuitive app and an impact dashboard where you can track your footprint and habits you have been following," said Shravan Boska, founder of the startup based in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Masons Ink focuses on three verticles — sustainable construction , heritage conservation and social architecture. Sridevi Changali, co-founder and principal architect, Masons Ink, believes that it is important to extend the life of buildings to achieve the goal of sustainability. "Buildings that were built 100 or 200 years ago are still standing pretty wonderfully today," she said, adding, one can learn a lot from them. According to her, there's definitely been a tangible increase in the number of inquiries on sustainable construction practices. "There are many takers for mud houses nowadays. Whether it's a trend or whether it's here to stay, we'll see in the next 10 years," she said. Sustainability is the buzzword in art too. Priyanka Thaker, founder of House of Beserk, an art studio, has been conscious of how they package and send their installations. "We are also trying to work with materials like terracotta that come from the earth," said Priyanka.Researchers launch “moonshot” to cure blindness through eye transplants

‘Shadow swimming just beyond’: First ever live footage of roughskin dog fish shark captured | WatchBroadwayHD , which celebrated its 10th anniversary in October, continues transforming access to theater by offering high-quality recordings of Broadway shows via its online streaming platform. What began as a vision of co-founders Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley has grown into a global resource, allowing theatergoers of all ages to experience the thrill of live performances at any time from any location. Lane and Comley have long seen BroadwayHD as a bridge to live theater, as it generates curiosity that leads to ticket sales for live performances. For longtime aficionados, it’s an opportunity to relive favorite productions. And for novices, it’s a warm welcome to the medium. BroadwayHD’s reach has become significant as a new study highlights the influence of arts involvement on society. Research by the National Endowment for the Arts shows that access to the arts corresponds with reduced crime rates, greater high school graduation rates and improved civic involvement. Residents are more inclined to vote, volunteer and seek higher education, demonstrating how a thriving arts scene can promote a connected and involved community. The NEA results highlight the societal advantages of active arts involvement. People who participate in the arts are more connected to their communities and more willing to support causes and organizations that benefit others, according to the research. BroadwayHD demonstrates that technology can enhance and enrich live arts rather than replace them. The 24-hour streaming service not only delivers Broadway into people’s living rooms worldwide, but also acts as a doorway for audiences who would otherwise be unable to see live theater. During the pandemic, BroadwayHD provided a vital link to live performance, keeping Broadway’s spirit alive while theaters were closed. But BroadwayHD’s aim extends beyond just streaming shows. By giving viewers a taste of Broadway, the platform encourages them to go out and see live theater. For many people, watching a show on BroadwayHD sparks a desire to visit in person locally or on Broadway. BroadwayHD’s initiatives to expand theatrical accessibility have also contributed to a greater variety of theater audiences. The platform has allowed individuals from all walks of life to see Broadway-quality performances by removing barriers such as high ticket prices, travel costs and geographical limitations. This inclusion is consistent with a larger push in the theatrical business to make the performing arts more accessible. As it approaches its second decade, BroadwayHD’s continued success demonstrates that providing theater productions online can enhance the appreciation for live performances. “The platform is essential in learning about theater and making it more accessible and inclusive for people too far from Broadway in real life,” the co-founders say.
