The National Pension Commission, PenCom, on Thursday said it had issued over 38,000 Pension Clearance Certificates, PCC, so far to organisations, in 2024. The Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Oloworaran, said this at a workshop organised by PenCom for journalists covering the pension industry in Lagos. The theme of the workshop was, “Tech-Driven Transformation: Shaping the Pension Landscape”. In 2023, PenCom issued 30,293 PCCs to firms. PCC is an evidence of compliance with the Pension Act. it serves as a prerequisite for all suppliers, contractors, or consultants soliciting contract or business from Ministries, Departmentss, and Agencies, MDAs, of the Federal Government. PenCom commenced the issuance of PCC to organisations in 2012 in line with the Pension Reform Act, PRA, which mandates all organisations with at least three employees to participate in the Contributory Pension Scheme, CPS. However, the certificate is valid up to Dec. 31 of the year it was obtained, irrespective of the date it was issued within the year. Organisations are, thus, required to apply for new PCC’s each year. Ms Oloworaran said that the commission also achieved a major milestone with the launch of the e-Application Portal for the PPC in October. She said that the initiative replaced the previous manual process, enabling companies to seamlessly apply for and receive PCCs online, significantly enhancing ease of doing business and ensuring compliance. The director-general said that the Pension Industry Shared Service Initiative is in an advanced stage of implementation. She said that the initiative would digitise pension contributions and remittances, ensuring seamless processing of contributions and resolving discrepancies caused by incomplete remittance details. “To further enhance contributors’ experiences, we have introduced a revised programme withdrawal template, simplifying access to voluntary contributions and revising the threshold for en-bloc payments in line with the new minimum wage. “These measures are designed to make retirement processes more efficient and user-centric. “But beyond policies and systems, what really excites me is the potential to transform lives,” she said. According to her, technology has become the backbone of transformation across all sectors, and the pension industry is no exception, hence PenCom has embraced the transformation wholeheartedly. Ms Oloworaran said that there are over 10.5 million contributors, while pension assets are in excess of N21.9 trillion as at October. She said that this progress demonstrated the strength of the CPS, though not without challenges. “Inflation, for instance, continues to erode the purchasing power of pensioners, and we are actively seeking innovative solutions to address this issue. “We also continue to face the persistent issue of delays in the payment of accrued rights. “Recently, N44 billion was approved under the 2024 budget appropriation to settle accrued pension rights for retirees from March to September 2023. “Moving forward, we are working with the Federal Government to put in place a sustainable solution that ensures that retirees receive their benefits promptly and without undue stress,” she said. She said that since assuming office, she and her team had been focused on strengthening compliance, enhancing service delivery, diversifying pension assets to optimising returns. She said that they had also been improving benefits and expanding coverage to include more Nigerians, especially those in the informal sector. Ms Oloworaran expressed passion over the micro-pension initiative, in particular, noting that it is the commission’s way of fostering financial inclusion, no matter how small an earning might be. She said that the commission intended to use technology to scale the micro-pension plan. “Technology plays a vital role in driving this inclusion from mobile enrollment to real-time account management,” she said. She said that PenCom planned to rebrand the micro-pension scheme, and also target onboarding not less than 20 million Nigerians in the informal sector. Ms Oloworaran acknowledged the role of the media as stakeholders in the success of the pension system. “As we integrate technology across every aspect of the pension industry, we are paving the way for a future where the CPS becomes more accessible, reliable, and sustainable. “However, this transformation cannot succeed without your unwavering support as media practitioners. “Your role in amplifying our initiatives and educating stakeholders across Nigeria is essential to achieving this vision,” she said. She described the ability of the media to inform, educate, and hold institutions accountable as invaluable. “Together, we can ensure that every Nigerian, including the most vulnerable, has access to a secure and dignified retirement,” she said. Join our entertainment channelUS added a strong 227,000 jobs in November in bounce-back from October slowdown WASHINGTON (AP) — America’s job market rebounded in November, adding 227,000 workers in a solid recovery from the previous month, when the effects of strikes and hurricanes had sharply diminished employers’ payrolls. Last month’s hiring growth was up considerably from a meager gain of 36,000 jobs in October. The government also revised up its estimate of job growth in September and October by a combined 56,000. Friday’s report also showed that the unemployment rate ticked up from 4.1% in October to a still-low 4.2%. The November data provided the latest evidence that the U.S. job market remains durable even though it has lost significant momentum from the 2021-2023 hiring boom, when the economy was rebounding from the pandemic recession. TikTok's future uncertain after appeals court rejects its bid to overturn possible US ban A federal appeals court panel on Friday unanimously upheld a law that could lead to a ban on TikTok in a few short months, handing a resounding defeat to the popular social media platform as it fights for its survival in the U.S. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the law - which requires TikTok to break ties with its China-based parent company ByteDance or be banned by mid-January - is constitutional, rebuffing TikTok’s challenge that the statute ran afoul of the First Amendment and unfairly targeted the platform. TikTok and ByteDance — another plaintiff in the lawsuit — are expected to appeal to the Supreme Court. Stock market today: Wall Street hits more records following a just-right jobs report NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose to records after data suggested the job market remains solid enough to keep the economy going, but not so strong that it raises immediate worries about inflation. The S&P 500 climbed 0.2%, just enough top the all-time high set on Wednesday, as it closed a third straight winning week in what looks to be one of its best years since the 2000 dot-com bust. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.3%, while the Nasdaq composite climbed 0.8% to set its own record. Treasury yields eased after the jobs report showed stronger hiring than expected but also an uptick in the unemployment rate. Killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO spotlights complex challenge companies face in protecting top brass NEW YORK (AP) — In an era when online anger and social tensions are increasingly directed at the businesses consumers count on, Meta last year spent $24.4 million to surround CEO Mark Zuckerberg with security. But the fatal shooting this week of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson while walking alone on a New York City sidewalk has put a spotlight on the widely varied approaches companies take to protect their leaders against threats. And experts say the task of evaluating threats against executives and taking action to protect them is getting more difficult. One of the primary worries are loners whose rantings online are fed by others who are like-minded. It’s up to corporate security analysts to decide what represents a real threat. Police believe gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO has left New York City NEW YORK (AP) — Police officials believe the gunman who killed the CEO of the largest U.S. health insurer may have fled the city on a bus. Video of the suspected shooter leaving the scene of Wednesday's shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson showed him riding a bicycle to Central Park and later taking a taxi cab to a bus depot, the chief of detectives told CNN on Friday. The police commissioner said investigators believe he left New York City. The gunman made sure to conceal his identity with a mask during the shooting yet left a trail of evidence in view of the nation’s biggest city and its network of security cameras. The reason for the killing remains unknown. USDA orders nationwide testing of milk for bird flu to halt the virus The U.S. government has ordered testing of the nation’s milk supply for bird flu to better monitor the spread of the virus in dairy cows. The Agriculture Department on Friday said raw or unpasteurized milk from dairy farms and processors nationwide must be tested on request starting Dec. 16. Testing will begin in six states — California, Colorado, Michigan, Mississippi, Oregon and Pennsylvania. The move is aimed at eliminating the virus, which has infected more than 700 dairy herds in 15 states. Words on ammo in CEO shooting echo common phrase on insurer tactics: Delay, deny, defend A message left at the scene of an insurance executive’s fatal shooting echoes a phrase commonly used to describe insurer tactics to avoid paying claims. The words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” were written on the ammunition used to kill UnitedHealthcare's CEO. That's according to two officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday. The words are similar to the phrase “delay, deny, defend.” That's how attorneys describe insurers denying services and payment, and the title of a 2010 book critical of the industry. Police haven’t officially commented on the words. But Thompson’s shooting and the messages on the ammunition have sparked outrage on social media and elsewhere, reflecting frustration Americans have over the cost and complexity of getting care. Michigan Democrats move to protect reproductive health data before GOP takes control of House LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Democrats in Michigan are pressing to pass reproductive health care legislation before the party loses its majority with the new legislative session next year. A bill to protect digital reproductive health data including data logged on menstrual cycle tracking apps is a Democratic priority as lawmakers meet this month. Democratic women and supporters of the legislation say they are acting with new urgency before President-elect Donald Trump takes office because they don't believe his campaign promise to leave abortion to the states. The rush is also a reaction to Republicans taking control of the state House in January. Democrats kept control of the state Senate in the November election. Japan's Nippon Steel sets sights on a growing overseas market in its bid to acquire US Steel KASHIMA, Japan (AP) — The signs at Nippon Steel read: “The world through steel,” underlining why Japan’s top steelmaker is pursuing its $15 billion bid to acquire U.S. Steel. Japan's domestic market isn't growing, so Nippon Steel has its eyes on India, Southeast Asia and the United States, where populations are still growing. Nippon Steel gave reporters a tour of one of its plants in Japan on Friday. The bid for U.S. Steet is opposed by President-elect Donald Trump, President Joe Biden and American steelworkers. If the deal goes through, U.S. Steel will keep its name and its headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but become subsidiary of Nippon Steel. China's ban on key high-tech materials could have broad impact on industries, economy BANGKOK (AP) — China has banned exports of key materials used for a wide range of products, including smartphones, electric vehicles, radar systems and CT scanners, swiping back at Washington after it expanded export controls to include dozens of Chinese companies that make equipment used to produce computer chips. Both sides say the controls are justified by national security concerns. Analysts say they could have a much wider impact on manufacturing in many industries and supply chains, depending on the ability of each side to compensate for loss of access to strategically important materials, equipment and components. Here's why this could be a tipping point in trade conflict between the two biggest economies.
Waterfront homes in desirable neighbourhoods are leading Sydney’s downturn, with values falling by as much as 10 per cent in the past three months in some areas, fresh data reveals. Buyers’ limits are being tested at the upper end of the market as higher interest rates for longer weigh on the ability and appetite to pay top dollar for blue chip real estate. A string of waterfront suburbs topped the list of largest house value falls in the three months to October, including Balmain East (down 6.9 per cent), Glebe (down 6.5 per cent), Rodd Point (down 9.7 per cent) and Abbotsford (down 8.1 per cent) on CoreLogic data. Zetland recorded the largest fall, at 10.1 per cent, in that period. The data included suburbs with a minimum of 20 sales. It was a similar trend for units, with the fastest falling suburb being Kurraba Point – its median, almost double the Sydney-wide value, fell 6.9 per cent to $1,537,771. Loading That was followed by McMahons Point (down 5.3 per cent), Mosman and Neutral Bay (both down 4.1 per cent). CoreLogic head of research Eliza Owen said the steepest declines were in suburbs where values were much higher than the citywide median. “It’s the high end of the Sydney market where most declines have been concentrated,” Owen said. “The median house value is $1.5 million, and the high end, the top 25 per cent of house values in Sydney, start at $1.8 million.” Aside from Zetland, the rest of the suburbs in the top 10 sit in the top quartile of the market where values are falling the most , Owen said. “This represents premium areas like Fairlight in the northern beaches, Glebe and Forest Lodge. A lot of these suburbs are extremely desirable markets within the parts of Sydney,” she said. The auction of a three-bedder in Zetland: It sold for $2.33 million, some $20,000 below its reserve. Credit: Rhett Wyman “There is a lot more investor concentration in the market, and investors tend to target lower value properties and units. “It’s also a reflection of affordability constraints, high interest rates, high cost-of-living pressures pushing buyers out of the high end, and [that] has them seeking the next most affordable market.” Owen said it was a similar trend with units: a string of suburbs that have double Sydney’s median unit value fell fastest. Loading “Affordability is exhausted across the high end and the buyers are just not there, and I do think it’ll spread,” Owen said. “That’s because it’s a natural progression of the cycle, where the higher values go at the low end of the market, the more out-of-reach they become, so demand begins to weaken there as well.” McGrath Maroubra’s Simon Nolan said even rare houses in a unit-heavy market such as Zetland were struggling to find willing buyers because they were at the top end of the suburb. “I’m at a price point that’s barely tested in the suburb,” he said. “It’s a price point where very few people have ever paid that sort of price. It’s never easy to get two of them. “People in Zetland don’t have that budget. It’s quite a rare person to have that money in the upper end. Overseas money doesn’t seem to be coming in either. Even they are not getting involved. “It’s certainly not an oversupply problem but a price point problem because of affordability and interest rates, and I’m seeing that across the board.” Warwick Williams’ Samuel Williams said the supply and demand balance had flipped in tightly held Rodd Point. “We’ve had a lot more supply in the last 12 to 18 months,” he said. “There were a couple of outlier sales as well ... when stock levels were very low so we were getting a premium too.” Williams said that turnkey homes were commanding a premium because the cost and availability of labour was proving difficult. Loading Since rates had remained steady, the number of homes hitting that market in this pocket was piling up. CobdenHayson Balmain’s Matthew Hayson said that even in the exclusive peninsula of Balmain East, there were more buyers for the lower end of the market than the top as affordability was being tested. “We’ve said the depth of the buyer pool has been tested for the past six months,” Hayson said. “Supply and demand has fallen in favour of buyers, and any agent will tell you ‘you’ve got a two-week window to secure a buyer’, and if you don’t, you’re in for a tricky time,” he said. “That’s very much evident at the top end.” As a recent example, he said that a property in Balmain East hit the market with a guide of $15 million, the auction was postponed, and the guide dropped to $12 million before selling for $10 million in a private treaty sale. Donald Trump’s aides have suggested that Iowa Senator Joni Ernst may be trying to sink the nomination of Pete Hegseth as defense secretary so that she can get the job instead. Ernst, a combat veteran and sexual assault survivor, has so far refused to publicly back Hegseth’s selection by Trump amid a string of controversies surrounding the Fox News host. Since his nomination, reports have emerged of Hegseth being accused of sexual assault , workplace misconduct, and alleged heavy drinking during work hours and at events. Additionally, he allegedly had multiple affairs throughout his first and second marriage – one of which led to him fathering a child with a Fox News producer. Ernst is considered a critical vote in Hegseth’s confirmation process given she is one of the nine women Republican Senators and had been rumored to be a possible replacement for the job. But her vote is also meaningful because of her military background and advocacy for sexual assault survivors. She has a long track record of supporting legislation aimed at addressing sexual assault within the military. While Ernst mulls over whether or not she will throw her support behind Hegseth, Trump’s aides have reportedly suggested she is holding out because she wants the role, according to The Guardian. But the Iowa senator publicly insists her hesitancy is based on the vetting process. “For a number of our senators, they want to make sure that any allegations are cleared, and that’s why we have to have a very thorough vetting process,” Ernst told Fox News on Thursday. In the same interview, Ernst confirmed she had not been convinced to vote “yes” on Hegseth. As defense secretary, Hegseth would be responsible for overseeing all U.S. military operations second to the president and providing the president with defense advice. The moment Trump nominated Hegseth for the position questions about his qualifications arose. Hegseth is a veteran of the Army National Guard who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. But he’s most well-known for being a Fox News host. Those questions have turned into genuine concerns for many since media reports revealed Hegseth has a history of sexual misconduct and heavy alcohol intake. Hegseth has denied those allegations and even promised to refrain from drinking alcohol if he is confirmed. But even with Trump, his own mother , former colleagues and Trump-aligned Senators backing him, it may not be enough for Ernst to vote for him. Hegseth is working with a very narrow margin in his confirmation vote. Assuming all Democratic Senators vote against him, he can only lose three Republican votes.Autohome Inc. Paddy McGuinness teases Take Me Out return five years after hit ITV series axed
Syrian government troops are battling insurgents inside Aleppo, the country's second-largest city, for the first time since 2016, according to state media — the most significant challenge in years to President Bashar al-Assad's rule over the war-torn country. It came after rebel fighters led by militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham broke through government defence lines in Aleppo on Friday , entering the city's western neighbourhoods with little resistance following a shock offensive launched earlier in the week from the countryside in the Aleppo and Idlib provinces. The insurgents took control of dozens of villages and towns along the way, including a strategic town south of Aleppo, and on Saturday claimed to control the entirety of Idlib province after capturing the city of Maraat Al-Numan, south of Idlib city. In Aleppo, Russian warplanes allied with the Syrian government are targeting rebel supply lines on the city's edge, with independent war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights saying about 20 fighters had been killed in air strikes on rebel reinforcements. Thousands of civilians are now fleeing the city by car from the main Khanasir Athriya intersection, according to local residents, mostly heading to Latakia and Salamiya — government strongholds to the west and south. Schools and government offices in Aleppo were closed on Saturday as most people stayed indoors to avoid the fighting, according to Sham FM radio, a pro-government station. Bakeries, however, remained open. Insurgents use social media to show off territorial gains In a social media post, a number of insurgents were pictured outside the Aleppo citadel, a medieval palace in the old city centre which is one of the largest in the world. The rebels also posted mobile phone videos of themselves speaking to residents in their homes, seeking to reassure them they will cause no harm. State media, however, referring to the fighters as terrorists, said a number of them had been chased and arrested by government troops after posing for pictures near city landmarks. On a state TV morning show, commentators on Saturday said army reinforcements and Russia's assistance will eventually repel the insurgents, blaming Türkiye for supporting their push into the Aleppo and Idlib provinces. Russia's state news agency Tass also quoted Oleg Ignasyuk, a Russian defence ministry official coordinating in Syria, as saying Russian planes had targeted and killed 200 militants taking part in the offensive on Friday. It provided no further details. Rebel attack follows weeks of simmering tension Aleppo has not been attacked by opposition forces since they were ousted from eastern neighbourhoods in 2016 following a gruelling military campaign in which Syrian government forces were backed by Russia, Iran and its allied groups. The battle for Aleppo was a turning point in the country's long-running civil war, which began in 2011 following protests against Bashar al-Assad's rule. The latest rebel attack on Aleppo followed weeks of simmering low-level violence, including government attacks on opposition-held areas. Türkiye, which has backed Syrian opposition groups, failed in its diplomatic efforts to prevent the Syrian government attacks, which were seen as a violation of a 2019 agreement sponsored by Russia, Turkey and Iran to freeze the line of the conflict. The rebel offensive came as Iran-linked groups backing the Assad regime, primarily Lebanon's Hezbollah, have been preoccupied with their own battles at home. A ceasefire in Hezbollah's two-month war with Israel took effect on Wednesday , the day the Syrian opposition factions announced their offensive. Israel has also escalated its attacks against Hezbollah and Iran-linked targets in Syria over the past 70 days. ABC/Wires ABC
