LAS VEGAS (AP) — A team that previously boycotted at least one match against the San Jose State women's volleyball program will again be faced with the decision whether to play the school , this time in the Mountain West Conference semifinals with a shot at the NCAA Tournament on the line. Five schools forfeited matches in the regular season against San Jose State, which carried a No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in Las Vegas. Among those schools: No. 3 Utah State and No. 6 Boise State, who will face off Wednesday with the winner scheduled to play the Spartans in the semifinals on Friday. Wyoming, Nevada and Southern Utah — which is not a Mountain West member — also canceled regular-season matches, all without explicitly saying why they were forfeiting. Nevada players cited fairness in women’s sports as a reason to boycott their match, while political figures from Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Nevada suggested the cancellations center around protecting women’s sports. In a lawsuit filed against the NCAA , plaintiffs cited unspecified reports asserting there was a transgender player on the San Jose State volleyball team, even naming her. Ties were so strained, for example, that in 2018 Japan’s Defense Ministry charged that a South Korean navy destroyer directed a targeting radar system at Japanese military patrol aircraft, charges that South Korea denied. Mr. Yoon put these tensions squarely in the rearview mirror, saying in 2023 that Japan had “transformed from a militaristic aggressor of the past into a partner.” Mr Yoon and then Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, a fellow conservative, launched the two nations into military cooperation including joint anti-submarine warfare exercises and ballistic missile defense drills. In June this year, Seoul and Tokyo normalized defense relations, and in July, together with Washington, they signed a memorandum to institutionalize their defense ties in a bid to lock in policy talks, joint training exercises, and information sharing on ballistic missiles. In part, the agreement was meant to sustain ties despite “ups and downs in the political situation in each of the three countries,” says a second Japanese defense official. In November, Mr. Nakatani became the first Japanese defense minister to board a South Korean warship, when the ship made a port call in Yokosuka, Japan. He was reportedly scheduled to visit South Korea later this month – the first Japanese defense minister to do so in nine years – but the ongoing political crisis has complicated these plans. As police investigate whether Mr. Yoon’s martial law decree constituted an insurrection, judicial authorities have barred the president from leaving the country. Mr. Nakatani’s counterpart, former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, resigned last week for his role in the martial law decision and was arrested. On Tuesday he reportedly attempted suicide in jail. A coalition of South Korean opposition parties is now working to impeach Mr. Yoon, arguing in part that he endangered South Korea by improving relations with Japan. The impeachment motion states that Mr. Yoon “has antagonized North Korea, China, and Russia, [and] insisted on a strange Japan-centered foreign policy ... inviting isolation in Northeast Asia and triggering the crisis of war.” If Mr. Yoon is forced from office or steps down, and the center-left opposition gains power, ties with Japan could suffer, say defense experts in both countries. “If the people choose a left-wing cabinet that is pro-North Korea, that would be very, very difficult,” says a senior Japanese Defense Ministry adviser. Meanwhile, Japan’s relationship with the U.S. – which has often acted as a stabilizing intermediary between Tokyo and Seoul – becomes all the more important, despite Washington facing its own political turnover in January. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will miss Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers with a sore throwing shoulder. Purdy injured his right shoulder in last Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks . Purdy underwent an MRI that showed no structural damage but the shoulder didn't improve during the week and Purdy was ruled out for the game. Coach Kyle Shanahan said star defensive end Nick Bosa also will miss the game with injuries to his left hip and oblique. Left tackle Trent Williams is questionable with an ankle injury and will be a game-time decision. This will be the first time Purdy has missed a start because of an injury since taking over as the 49ers’ quarterback in December 2022. Brandon Allen will start in his place. The Niners (5-5) are currently in a three-way tie for second in the NFC West, a game behind first-place Arizona, and have little margin for error if they want to get back to the playoffs after making it to the Super Bowl last season. (AP) — A U.S. senator has called for mysterious drones spotted flying at night over sensitive areas in New Jersey and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic region to be “shot down, if necessary,” even as it remains unclear who owns the unmanned aircraft. “We should be doing some very urgent intelligence analysis and take them out of the skies, especially if they’re flying over airports or military bases,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said Thursday, as concerns about the drones spread across Capitol Hill. People in the New York region are also concerned that the drones may be sharing airspace with commercial airlines, he said, demanding more transparency from the Biden administration. The White House said Thursday that a review of the reported sightings shows that many of them are actually manned aircraft being flown lawfully. White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said there were no reported sightings in any restricted airspace. He said the U.S. Coast Guard has not uncovered any foreign involvement from coastal vessels. “We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or a public safety threat, or have a foreign nexus,” Kirby said, echoing statements from the Pentagon and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh has said they are not U.S. military drones. In a joint statement issued Thursday afternoon, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security said they and their federal partners, in close coordination with the New Jersey State Police, “continue to deploy personnel and technology to investigate this situation and confirm whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.” The agencies said they have not corroborated any of the reported sightings with electronic detection, and that reviews of available images appear to show many of the reported drones are actually manned aircraft. “There are no reported or confirmed drone sightings in any restricted air space,” according to the statement. The drones appear to avoid detection by traditional methods such as helicopter and radio, according to a state lawmaker briefed Wednesday by the Department of Homeland Security. The number of sightings has increased in recent days, though officials say many of the objects seen may have been planes rather than drones. It’s also possible that a single drone has been reported more than once. The worry stems partly from the flying objects initially being spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. In a post on the social media platform X, Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia described the drones as up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in diameter and sometimes traveling with their lights switched off. Drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use but are subject to local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. Operators must be FAA certified. Most, but not all, of the drones spotted in New Jersey appeared to be larger than those typically used by hobbyists. Sen. A melee broke out at midfield of Ohio Stadium after Michigan upset No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday. After the Wolverines' fourth straight win in the series, players converged at the block "O" to plant its flag. The Ohio State players were in the south end zone singing their alma mater in front of the student section. When the Buckeyes saw the Wolverines' flag, they rushed toward the 50-yard line. Social media posts showed Michigan offensive lineman Raheem Anderson carrying the flag on a long pole to midfield, where the Wolverines were met by dozens of Ohio State players and fights broke out. Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer was seen ripping the flag off the pole and taking the flag as he scuffled with several people trying to recover the flag. A statement from the Ohio State Police Department read: "Following the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in breaking up an on-field altercation. During the scuffle, multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray. OSUPD is the lead agency for games and will continue to investigate." Michigan running back Kalel Mullings on FOX said: "For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game. It's bad for the sport, bad for college football. At the end of the day, some people got to learn how to lose, man. "You can't be fighting and stuff just because you lost the game. We had 60 minutes and four quarters to do all that fighting. Spithill, the team’s CEO and founder, pulled a major coup by hiring his old America’s Cup crewmate and fellow Australian, wing trimmer Kyle Langford, from the Australian team that dominated SailGP for the first three seasons. Italy, SailGP’s 12th team, sailed its foiling 50-foot catamaran for the first time Thursday. After practice racing on Friday, the opening regatta will be Saturday and Sunday. “It’s been definitely a big push,” Spithill said in a video interview with The Associated Press. “It’s all come up really quick. We’re almost there.” Spithill left the U.S. SailGP team in November after 2 1/2 seasons to focus on starting the Italian team and on sailing in this year’s America’s Cup. Charleston Southern grabs late lead, stuns host MiamiSTATE COLLEGE — Early in the season, Penn State routinely started slowly on offense, a trend that has reared itself again over the last two weeks. Penn State fell behind 10-0 last week before rallying at Minnesota. On a frigid final day of November, the Nittany Lions were down 7-0 to Maryland after two plays. Nicholas Singleton fumbled on Penn State’s first play and Maryland struck on its first snap with quarterback MJ Morris hitting Kaden Prather for a 25-yard TD 14 seconds into the game. Penn State stumbled through most of the first quarter, gaining just 11 yards on its first four drives and managing just a 49-yard field goal from Ryan Barker following a big kick return. The defense settled in first. Penn State had three sacks in five snaps, including a corner blitz from sophomore Zion Tracy to jumpstart the squad who learned just before kickoff it could reach the Big Ten title game with a win. On its fifth drive, the offense got going. The Nittany Lions bridged the first and second quarters with a 13-play drive, covering 60 yards. The animation sees Butler return to his singing roots - first showcased in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of The Opera film in 2004. He said he didn't want to overthink it and to jump straight into a sound booth. "The second I read this script, I could just hear my voice and see those little moments. LAS VEGAS (AP) — A team that previously boycotted at least one match against the San Jose State women's volleyball program will again be faced with the decision whether to play the school , this time in the Mountain West Conference semifinals with a shot at the NCAA Tournament on the line. Five schools forfeited matches in the regular season against San Jose State, which carried a No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in Las Vegas. Among those schools: No. 3 Utah State and No. 6 Boise State, who will face off Wednesday with the winner scheduled to play the Spartans in the semifinals on Friday. Wyoming, Nevada and Southern Utah — which is not a Mountain West member — also canceled regular-season matches, all without explicitly saying why they were forfeiting. Nevada players cited fairness in women’s sports as a reason to boycott their match, while political figures from Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Nevada suggested the cancellations center around protecting women’s sports. In a lawsuit filed against the NCAA , plaintiffs cited unspecified reports asserting there was a transgender player on the San Jose State volleyball team, even naming her. While some media have reported those and other details, neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans women’s volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player’s name because she has not publicly commented on her gender identity and through school officials has declined an interview request. A judge on Monday rejected a request made by nine current conference players to block the San Jose State player from competing in the tournament on grounds that she is transgender. San Jose State, which had a first-round bye, would be sent directly to the conference title game if Utah State or Boise State were to forfeit again.
