WASHINGTON — Russell Vought is well-known on Capitol Hill and thus far at least looks like a shoo-in to be confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s budget director, as he was during Trump’s first term on a party-line vote in 2020. The hard-charging Vought is a revered figure on the right with his pledges to upend the “deep state” and dismantle “woke and weaponized government,” including by refusing to spend all the money Congress appropriates. He’ll need to be vetted again in the new year, where Democrats on the Senate Budget and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs panels will be poring over Vought’s writings and speeches since leaving the Trump administration to found a new pro-Trump think tank, the Center for Renewing America. Vought is also one of many contributors to the Heritage Foundation-led Project 2025, which Trump disavowed during his presidential campaign and is a major lightning rod on the left. Since Trump’s Nov. 22 announcement that Vought was his choice to once again lead his Office of Management and Budget, a parade of conservative GOP senators have come out in support, such as Mike Lee of Utah, Rick Scott of Florida, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama. But virtually every other entitlement and discretionary program would be on the cutting board, with a stated goal to “consciously and indelibly link the efforts of getting our nation’s finances in order with removing the scourge of woke and weaponized bureaucracy aimed at the American people,” Vought wrote. The budget compares its proposed fiscal 2023 spending agency by agency to enacted spending in fiscal 2021, so its numbers are not up to date. Since 2010, we have had a staggering 260 per cent increase in estimated new infections — the second fastest-growing epidemic in the Asia-Pacific region! We had 121 new HIV cases in 2021, which rose to 245 in 2022 and 415 in 2023. Now, from June this year, we have had an alarming 552 new cases! That’s shocking! Well, perhaps not as shocking as it should be, especially given the state of affairs in terms of drug use among Fijians these days. We reflect on the use of shared needles for methamphetamine for instance! We now realise how wide-spread it has become, and how long it has been around. The difference is now there appears to be more said and done about this challenge! Could that be another reason for the rise in numbers, the notion that because of awareness, people are having the courage to come out with their condition! One thing is for certain though, more is now said about HIV. When you look back at the figures, from 2010, we wonder why we sort of lacked the will power maybe, to push this to the top of our domestic agenda then? Health Ministry medical officer West Dr Abdul Shah believes the rise in new HIV cases is cause for concern. We agree! Speaking at the World AIDS Day event in Nadi on Friday, Mr Shah said they had seen an increase in the number of HIV/AIDS cases in Fiji. Of the new cases, he noted, an overwhelming 97 per cent were diagnosed in adults, with a concerning trend of mother-to-child transmission also on the rise. This year, Mr Shah said, there were multiple new infections diagnosed in newborns! He said 15 per cent of new cases reported involved people who used injectable illicit drugs! In saying that, there had also been an increase in AIDS-related deaths, emphasising the urgent need for effective intervention. So in the greater scheme of things, it is encouraging to know that the Health Ministry has developed the National HIV Surge Strategy for 2024 – 2027. Dr Shah said the strategy was a collaborative effort involving diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organisations, faith-based groups and the community at large. He said international technical organisations including WHO and UNAIDS were instrumental in this process. The National HIV Surge Strategy clearly aims to not only curb the rising numbers of new infections but also to mitigate the social stigma attached to HIV. This, without a doubt, often prevents people from seeking the care and treatment they need. So we say education and awareness campaigns are important in nurturing an environment where people feel safe to talk about their status and seek medical assistance. We say it is important for us to be proactive and vigilant, and address concerns before us. Let’s consider this a health crisis, and focus on education, awareness, prevention and treatment programs. Previously, Espina spoke at the 2024 Democratic National Conventional alongside other content creators on his own personal experiences immigrating to Texas when he was 5. Espina went on to graduate from Vassar College with a degree in political science and graduated from the Boyd School of Law. In the Forbes article, Espina is credited with founding Migrantes Unidos, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting immigrants by providing free citizenship classes, English courses, workshops and more. Espina founded his first nonprofit, Football for the Future, in 2017 where he hoped to provide free soccer and educational camps for low-income children in Central Texas. To be nominated for Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list, all candidates had to be 29 or younger as of Dec. 31, 2024, and could not have been on a previous Forbes 30 Under 30 list. The list for 2024 was judged by Vivian Tu, former Wall Street trader; Renee DiResta, head of policy at Data for Democracy; Ali Berman, partner and head of digital talent at United Talent Agency; and Adam Warheed, comedian and YouTube creator.
