Build Asia Exhibition: Pakistan to enter new era after Sindh’s new mega project, says Sharjeel SIFC plays an important role in ensuring economic stability in country, Says minister KARACHI: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon on Tuesday said there are vast investment opportunities in Pakistan because the country is rich in natural mines and minerals. He was speaking to the media at the opening ceremony of the three-day 18th Build Asia International Exhibition & Conferences at the Expo Centre. Memon said the government wants to provide facilities to business owners, use modern technology to offer them services, and provide a reliable environment to foreign investors and business owners. The government has relaxed the visa policy for foreigners, and the priority of the federal and provincial governments is to encourage investment in every sector, he added. “Foreign investors must be provided with facilities for business and residence to increase their confidence, so that not only Pakistanis but also international investors invest in Pakistan.” He said the provincial government has also invited international investors for Thar coal, with delegations from many countries, including China, having visited Pakistan. Positive changes have been brought to Pakistan, and further changes must also be made in our attitudes and style of governance, he added. He also said investors are being provided facilities through the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), and if business owners are given these facilities, their confidence would increase. The SIFC plays an important role in ensuring economic stability in the country, he added. “Pakistan has many investment opportunities, and we can take our products to the international market in a better way. The Sindh government is bringing a big surprise, and the announcement will be made soon.” Replying to a question, Memon said: “We consider every person living in Sindh a Sindhi. We also consider our Urdu-speaking brothers Sindhis, and we ourselves say they are our Urdu-speaking Sindhis.” He said Yutong, a Chinese manufacturer of commercial vehicles, has assured the government that it would set up a manufacturing plant in Sindh. When the plant is established, people here will get employment, he added. He also said the provincial government established the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to promote investment. This is the most modern SEZ in Pakistan, and the only one that is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, he added. Memon said the Sindh government is coming up with a mega project. He said it would also be great news for business owners. After this project Pakistan will enter a new era, he added. Responding to a query, he said: “Riots were organised here to move the capital out of Sindh. The Sindh government has controlled other major crimes, including terrorism. We want to create an environment where business institutions that have left can come back.” He also said: “Whether it’s Punjab or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, we have no objection to investment anywhere in Pakistan, but every business owner believes that even today, the most suitable places to set up a factory in Pakistan are Karachi, Dhabeji and Nooriabad.” He pointed out that Karachi has a port for exporting everything. “Under a conspiracy, business was shifted out of Karachi. With our efforts, investors and business owners from all over the world will come to Karachi.” The minister said: “Yesterday the government held talks with the opposition in a positive atmosphere. The Pakistan Peoples Party has been saying from day one that the solution to all kinds of contradictions in the world is dialogue.” He said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has finally come to the table. Better late that never, he added. He also said we want those who were complicit in incidents like that of May 9 to face the consequences of their actions as well. “There have been international objections to military courts, but this is an internal matter of Pakistan, and no one needs to interfere in Pakistan’s internal affairs.” Memon said the provincial government spent more than a billion dollars on Thar coal, and today electricity from Thar coal is going to the national grid. “We want electricity to be affordable for everyone, and we aim to promote people’s businesses.” Replying to a question, he said: “Some people are sitting at the negotiating table, while others, like Arif Alvi, are engaging in political intrigues. They don’t want negotiations to take place; they want their leader to remain in jail, and they want their businesses to continue.” Responding to another query, the minister said: “Heavy traffic in Karachi is a big challenge. I request the licence issuers to check these issues before issuing licences.” After speaking to the media and giving a brief speech at a panel discussion, he said: “From industrialists to labourers, everyone’s livelihood is linked to construction work. We want to keep investors stable and safe, and we are also working to bring foreign investment to Pakistan.” Regarding law and order, Memon said the situation has improved, and now all kinds of investors can invest in Karachi. “I assure you that any problems that arise will be resolved by the Sindh government.”

The Detroit Lions (13-2) are in the pole position, as they have been for months, but the Minnesota Vikings (13-2) have quietly kept pace throughout. If the Vikings can beat the Green Bay Packers at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, they’ll turn next week’s date with the Lions at Ford Field into a winner-takes-all battle for both the NFC North title and No. 1 seed in the playoffs, with the loser getting the No. 5 seed and a road game on wild-card weekend as a consolation prize. The stakes are massive this week, especially for Minnesota . If the Vikings fall to the Packers on Sunday, they could be home watching as the Lions sew up the division and No. 1 seed on Monday Night Football against a San Francisco 49ers team that has already been eliminated from playoff contention. The Vikings would need the Lions to lose at Levi’s Stadium to stay in the hunt, in that scenario. A Vikings win over the Packers on Sunday, however, changes everything. That result would essentially make Detroit’s game at San Francisco meaningless. Even if Detroit were to lose to the 49ers following a Vikings win, the Lions would still clinch the No. 1 seed with a win over Minnesota in Week 18. In short: The Vikings have no clinching scenarios in Week 17, but the Lions do, as long as Minnesota loses to Green Bay. Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked by reporters if his approach to Monday’s game would change based on the Vikings-Packers result, and he gave the most Dan Campbell answer ever : Yeah, I’ll make this easy for everybody, that way all the critics can jump out and start attacking. But that way, you don’t have to debate them anymore. We’re bringing everything we’ve got to this game, and we are playing... I don’t care what it looks like, and where it’s at, and who’s this, who’s that... we’re going out to play and win this game out on the West Coast. So, there you go. So there you have it, the Lions don’t plan to take their foot off the gas pedal, no matter how Minnesota’s game with the Packers plays out. That approach has worked for Campbell all along in Detroit, so it comes as no surprise that he won’t be scoreboard watching on Sunday. The race for the NFC’s No. 1 seed has been fun to follow, with the Philadelphia Eagles (12-3) firmly in the hunt until last week’s brutal loss to the Washington Commanders . It’s now a two-team race, and would be fitting if nothing’s clinched until a winner walks off Ford Field in Week 18.Injuries pile up, 49ers uncertain QB Brock Purdy can return Sunday

NoneWASHINGTON (AP) — American Airlines briefly grounded flights nationwide Tuesday because of a technical problem just as the Christmas travel season kicked into overdrive and winter weather threatened more potential problems for those planning to fly or drive. Government regulators cleared American flights to get airborne about an hour after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a national ground stop for the airline. The order, which prevented planes from taking off, was issued at the airline's request after it experienced trouble with its flight operating system, or FOS. The airline blamed technology from one of its vendors. As a result, flights were delayed across American’s major hubs, with only 37% of the airline's 3,901 domestic and international flights leaving on time, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics company. Nineteen flights were canceled. Dennis Tajer, a spokesperson for the Allied Pilots Association, a union representing American Airlines pilots, said the airline told pilots at 7 a.m. Eastern that there was an outage affecting the FOS system. It handles different types of airline operations, including dispatch, flight planning, passenger boarding, as well as an airplane's weight and balance data, he said. Some components of FOS have gone down in the past, but a systemwide outage is rare, Tajer said. Hours after the ground stop was lifted, Tajer said the union had not heard about any “chaos out there beyond just the normal heavy travel day.” He said officials were watching for any cascading effects, such as staffing problems. On social media, however, customers expressed frustrations about delays that caused them or their family members to miss connecting flights. One person asked if American planned to hold flights for passengers to make connections, while others complained about the lack of assistance they said they received from the airline or gate agents. Cirium noted that the vast majority of flights were departing within two hours of their scheduled departure time. A similar percentage — 36% — were arriving at their destinations as scheduled. Dallas-Fort Worth, New York’s Kennedy Airport and Charlotte, North Carolina, saw the greatest number of delays, Cirium said. Washington, Chicago and Miami experienced considerably fewer delays. Meanwhile, the flight-tracking site FlightAware reported that 4,058 flights entering or leaving the U.S., or serving domestic destinations, were delayed, with 76 flights canceled. The site had not posted any American Airlines flights on Tuesday morning, but showed in the afternoon that 961 American flights were delayed. Amid the travel problems, significant rain and snow were expected in the Pacific Northwest at least into Christmas Day. Showers and thunderstorms were developing in the South. Freezing rain was reported in the Mid-Atlantic region near Baltimore and Washington, and snow fell in New York. Because the holiday travel period lasts weeks, airports and airlines typically have smaller peak days than they do during the rush around Thanksgiving, but the grind of one hectic day followed by another takes a toll on flight crews. And any hiccups — a winter storm or a computer outage — can snowball into massive disruptions. That is how Southwest Airlines stranded 2 million travelers in December 2022, and Delta Air Lines suffered a smaller but significant meltdown after a worldwide technology outage in July caused by a faulty software update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Many flights during the holidays are sold out, which makes cancellations even more disruptive than during slower periods. That is especially true for smaller budget airlines that have fewer flights and fewer options for rebooking passengers. Only the largest airlines, including American, Delta and United, have “interline agreements” that let them put stranded customers on another carrier’s flights. This will be the first holiday season since a Transportation Department rule took effect that requires airlines to give customers an automatic cash refund for a canceled or significantly delayed flight. Most air travelers were already eligible for refunds, but they often had to request them. Passengers still can ask to get rebooked, which is often a better option than a refund during peak travel periods. That’s because finding a last-minute flight on another airline tends to be expensive. An American spokesperson said Tuesday was not a peak travel day for the airline — with about 2,000 fewer flights than the busiest days — so the airline had somewhat of a buffer to manage the delays. The groundings happened as millions of travelers were expected to fly over the next 10 days. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 40 million passengers through Jan. 2. Airlines expect to have their busiest days on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Many flights during the holidays are sold out, which makes cancellations more disruptive than during slower periods. Even with just a brief outage, the cancellations have a cascading effect that can take days to clear up. About 90% of Americans traveling far from home over the holidays will be in cars, according to AAA. “Airline travel is just really high right now, but most people do drive to their destinations, and that is true for every holiday,” AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz said. Gasoline prices are similar to last year. The nationwide average Thursday was $3.04 a gallon, down from $3.13 a year ago, according to AAA. Charging an electric vehicle averages just under 35 cents per per kilowatt hour, but varies by state. Transportation-data firm INRIX says travel times on the nation’s highways could be up to 30% longer than normal over the holidays, with Sunday expected to see the heaviest traffic. Boston, New York City, Seattle and Washington are the metropolitan areas primed for the greatest delays, according to the company. Associated Press writers David Koenig, Mae Anderson and Mike Pesoli contributed to this report.

His policy of Economic Liberalisation and Rights-based welfare paradigm profoundly transformed the lives of crores of Indians, virtually creating a Middle Class in India and lifting crores out of poverty," he wrote on X. The Congress chief called Singh a man of action rather than words saying that his immense contribution to nation-building will forever be etched in the annals of Indian history "I mourn the loss of a lifelong senior colleague, a gentle intellectual and a humble soul who embodied the aspirations of India, having risen through the ranks with unwavering dedication. "Few people in politics inspire the kind of respect that Sardar Manmohan Singh ji did. His honesty will always be an inspiration for us and he will forever stand tall among those who truly love this country as someone who remained steadfast in his commitment to serve the nation despite being subjected to unfair and deeply personal attacks by his opponents. He was genuinely egalitarian, wise, strong-willed and courageous until the end. A uniquely dignified and gentleman in the rough world of politics," Priyanka wrote on X. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that the party is cancelling all their programmes and rushing back to Delhi from Belagavi in Karnataka. "It's very tragic. He was a great prime minister who served the nation. We are cancelling all our programmes and rushing back to Delhi," he said. Former Deputy National Security Adviser Pankaj Saran, who had worked with Singh during his prime ministerial tenure, said he was a man who symbolised humility and collegiate style of functioning. "He was a consensus builder. A very simple man who did not expect to become the prime minister," Saran told PTI. N N Vohra, who was appointed Governor of Jammu and Kashmir during Singh's tenure, said his death is the end of a "truly rare species of political leadership, which was marked by exceptional intellectual capability, honesty, transparency and unparalleled humility." "A man of very few words, he heard everyone, high and low, and tackled the most complex issues by taking his own decisions which best served the national interest," he said. Singh is the only PM who held prime minister's office without winning a popular vote. He ended his 33-year-long parliamentary innings in the Rajya Sabha on April 3. (with agency inputs)WATCH: Clarendon Chaos; Municipal meeting goes off the rails as Dawson sworn inRANGERS have humbled a few famous clubs from major football nations in continental competition in recent years despite their domestic travails. Few if any of the European results they have recorded in modern times, though, will have felt as sweet for their fans as this Battle of Britain draw with Spurs at Ibrox tonight. The Glasgow club ensured there was no triumphant return to Scotland for former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou in their Europa League league phase match. The morale-boosting point against the Premier League giants – secured thanks to a second-half Hamza Igamane goal - will raise their confidence levels no end ahead of their Premier Sports Cup final meeting with their city rivals at Hampden on Sunday. A first win by a Scottish club over top flight English opponents in 18 years may have cruelly eluded them – but Rangers increased their chances of qualifying automatically for the knockout rounds of the competition all the same. Here are five talking points from a memorable night. Disappointing Spurs Postecoglou described the catalogue of injuries and suspensions which he has had to deal with this season as the worst he has experienced in his 25 coaching career at his pre-match press conference on Wednesday – and his team selection highlighted the problems he has had. He made no fewer than five changes to the side which lost 4-3 to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday. Rodrigo Bentancur, the Uruguayan internationalist whose ban for using a racial slur only applies to domestic fixtures, came into the midfield and James Maddison and Timo Werner also got the nod as Pape Sarr, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke dropped to the bench, But it was at the back, where first choice centre halves Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were both missing, that Postecoglou’s plight was most obvious. Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin came in to the heart of his rearguard. Gray - the son of Andy, grandson of Frank and great-nephew of Eddie, a trio of former Scotland internationalists – might have cost Spurs a cool £40m during the summer. But the ex-Leeds United kid is still just 18 and is more of a central midfielder or a full-back. Spurs looked very much like a side which had won just one of their previous seven games. They by no means, despite having Son Heung-min, Werner and Maddison on the park, troubled their hosts. Quite the opposite in fact. It was clear to see why they have been toiling in the English top flight. They were lucky to avoid defeat. Rangers spirit Philippe Clement mixed things up for this match too. Danilo and Ianis Hagi, who have been two of his best performers in recent weeks, were unavailable as they were not included in the European squad. Leon Balogun and Connor Barron also dropped out as Ridvan Yilmaz, Robin Propper, Mohamed Diomande and Nadim Bajrami came in. Yilmaz, who had not started since the Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv at Hampden way back in August, somewhat unusually slotted in on the left wing as Jefte remained at left back. Bajrami, too, moved inside and performed the playmaker role. But the set-up worked well. The atmosphere inside the ground was electric as the two teams emerged from the tunnel – and when the visitors peeled away to the corner of the pitch and formed a Celtic-style huddle before kick-off the decibel levels got cranked up a notch or two. Fraser Forster, the former Celtic player who inflicted so much misery on Rangers during his various spells in Scotland, was booed by the home supporters every time he took a touch. But the 6ft 7in goalkeeper did not have a huge amount to do in the opening 45 minutes. He pushed a Bajrami attempt wide and dealt with two on target efforts from Vaclav Cerny. He would have been beaten if Bajrami or James Tavernier had been able to get on the end of a square ball which Jefte whipped across the six yard box. Fortunately for him, neither man could make contact. But he could do nothing to keep an Igamane shot out of his net after the Moroccan striker had been supplied by Tavernier early in the second half. Nobody could begrudge Rangers their lead. They had been the better side. Ange under pressure Postecoglou removed Werner and put on Kulusevski at the start of the second half. But if anything his men were worse after the change. They were fortunate to only concede once as their hosts laid siege to their goal. However, the substitute levelled with 15 minutes of regulation time remaining to ultimately salvage a draw for the visitors which their display scarcely merited. The Greek-Australian enjoyed more successes than failures against Rangers during his time in Scotland. But his expensively-assembled team were on the back foot for long periods this evening. The pressure is well and truly on him now. He had chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” aimed in his direction by the home supporters in the 48,064-strong crowd after Igamane struck. He will have to oversee a distinct upturn in form to avoid that fate in the weeks ahead. Souttar setback Rangers contained the Spurs front three pretty effectively in the opening half an hour and Jack Butland was never seriously tested in goal. But they suffered a serious blow when centre half John Souttar sank to the turf and then hobbled off injured after failing to respond to treatment. Balogun, the Nigerian internationalist who is no stranger to big European nights, came on and acquitted himself well. But if Souttar is out of the Premier Sports Cup final it will seriously reduce the defending champions’ chances of retaining their trophy. The Scotland internationalist has been immense for them this term. Euro progress With Manchester United away and Union St Gilloise to come in January, there is still a lot of football to be played before Rangers can clinch a place in the next stage of the competition. But if they perform as well as this in their next two outings then they will go through. Only a brilliant Forster save from a Cyriel Dessers shot with five minutes of regulation time denied them victory.
