The Prime Minister used an op-ed in the Mail on Sunday to vow to “get to grips” with the cost of welfare after figures suggested more than four million people will be claiming long-term sickness support by the end of the decade. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall will announce a package of legislation next week designed to “get Britain working” amid Government concerns about the projected rise. Official forecasts published by her department this week show that the number of people claiming incapacity benefits is expected to climb from a pre-pandemic figure of around 2.5 million in 2019 to around 4.2 million in 2029. MELBOURNE, Australia — An advocate for major social media platforms told an Australian Senate committee Monday that laws to ban children younger than 16 from the sites should be delayed until next year at least instead of being rushed through the Parliament this week. Sunita Bose, managing director of Digital Industry Group Inc., an advocate for the digital industry in Australia including X, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, was answering questions at a single-day Senate committee hearing into world-first legislation that was introduced into the Parliament last week. Bose said the Parliament should wait until the government-commissioned evaluation of age assurance technologies is completed in June. “Parliament is asked to pass a bill this week without knowing how it will work,” Bose said. The legislation would impose fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) on platforms for systemic failures to prevent young children from holding accounts. It would take effect a year after the bill becomes law, allowing the platforms time to work out technological solutions that would also protect users’ privacy. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said she looked forward to reading the Senate committee's assessment of the proposed law, which “supports parents to say ‘no’” to children wanting to use social media. “Social media in its current form is not a safe product for them,” Rowland told Parliament. “Access to social media does not have to be the defining feature of growing up. There is more to life than constant notifications, endless scrolling and pressure to conform to the false and unrealistic perfectionism that can be served up by influencers,” she added. Bose received heated questions from several senators and challenges to the accuracy of her answers. Opposition Sen. Ross Cadell asked how his 10-year-old stepson was able to hold Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube accounts from the age of 8, despite the platforms setting a nominal age limit of 13. Bose replied that “this is an area where the industry needs to improve.” She said the proposed social media ban risked isolating some children and driving children to “darker, less safe online spaces” than mainstream platforms. Bose said her concern with the proposed law was that “this could compromise the safety of young people,” prompting a hostile response from opposition Sen. Sarah Henderson. “That’s an outrageous statement. You’re trying to protect the big tech giants,” Henderson said. Unaligned Sen. Jacqui Lambie asked why the platforms didn’t use their algorithms to prevent harmful material being directed to children. The algorithms have been accused of keeping technology-addicted children connected to platforms and of flooding users with harmful material that promotes suicide and eating disorders. “Your platforms have the ability to do that. The only thing that’s stopping them is themselves and their greed,” Lambie said. Bose said algorithms were already in place to protect young people online through functions including filtering out nudity. “We need to see continued investment in algorithms and ensuring that they do a better job at addressing harmful content,” Bose said. The Samajwadi Party (SP) emerged victorious on the remaining two seats — Karhal and Sishamau. According to the Election Commission (EC), the BJP candidates emerged victorious in Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair (SC), Phulpur, Katehari and Majhawan assembly constituencies. In Phulpur, BJP’s Deepak Patel bagged 78,289 votes to defeat his nearest rival and SP nominee Md Mujtaba Siddiqui by 11,305 votes. In Ghaziabad, saffron party nominee Sanjeev Sharma polled 96,946 votes to trounce his nearest rival Singh Raj Jatav of the SP by 69,351 votes, while his party colleague Surender Diler emerged victorious in Khair, defeating SP’s Charu Kain by 38,393 votes. Tej Pratap’s party colleague Naseem Solanki defeated BJP’s Suresh Awasthi by 8,564 votes in Sishamau where Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) Virendra Kumar finished a distant third with 1,410 votes. The bypoll in Sishamau was necessitated after three-time sitting SP MLA Irfan Solanki, the husband of Naseem Solanki, was disqualified following his conviction in a criminal case. In Meerapur, RLD’s Mithilesh Pal bagged 84,304 votes to defeat her nearest rival Sumbul Rana of the SP by 30,796 votes. In the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP won Phulpur, Ghaziabad, Majhawan and Khair, while the SP emerged victorious in Sishamau, Katehari, Karhal and Kundarki. The RLD, which was an SP ally then, won the Meerapur seat. The Congress stayed away from the bypolls this time after extending support to its INDIA bloc ally SP. The BSP fielded candidates in all nine seats, while the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) put up nominees in Ghaziabad, Kundarki and Meerapur. The Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) led by Chandrashekhar Aazad was also in the fray in all the seats barring Sishamau. Presently, the BJP has 251 MLAs and the SP 105 in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. BJP allies Apna Dal (Sonelal), RLD, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party and Nishad Party also have members in the House. The Congress and the Jansatta Dal Loktantrik have two seats each, while the BSP has one MLA in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

Police responded to the shooting at the intersection of Iberville and Royal streets at around 12:21 p.m. and had at least one of three suspects in custody, Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick told reporters. Kirkpatrick said at least three masked suspects were in a silver 2016 Honda Accord when they pulled up outside Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse and opened fire. “This was not random, and we could see that,” Kirkpatrick said in a media briefing at the scene. The arrested suspect's name and the expected charges have not yet been released. Kirkpatrick urged the other suspects to come forward. “We know who you are,” she said. “We're asking you to come in, turn yourself in.” At least one firearm has been recovered, she said.
