Tomorrow, a festive and joyful spirit envelops the nation, yet beneath this cheerful façade lies a somber reality that too many families painfully confront daily. The challenges they face are not just seasonal; they are relentless, worsening with each passing year. As households grapple with the rising cost of living, essential needs — food, medicine, healthcare — drift increasingly out of reach for countless families. Every Christmas, the contrast between holiday cheer and personal despair creates a heartbreaking tableau. Families must bear the burden of balancing mounting hospital bills against the simple joy of providing a feast on their tables. This season, many will find themselves faced with the wrenching decision: celebrate or survive? What compounds this grief is the absence of a government— from local barangays to Malacañang—that actively protects and serves these struggling citizens. Instead, we witness the same corrupt political families entrenched in municipal halls, city councils, and provincial governments, poised to exploit government coffers after the upcoming May 2025 elections. These individuals, tasked with safeguarding our resources, are instead entangled in schemes meant to plunder public funds earmarked for development, education, and social welfare. From the PNP to Customs, DPWH, and the Department of Education, key agencies have devolved into hubs of corruption rather than vehicles for progress. Justice’s cries are stifled under the weight of greed that pervades every corridor of power, whether in Congress or local councils. We deserve leaders who prioritize genuine service over selfish agendas, transparency over deception. The time for demanding accountability is now! Our hopes for true change hinge not only on electing the right officials but also fostering widespread civic engagement—a national chorus echoing the call for integrity. It’s high time we stop electing corrupt lawmakers who treat politics as their personal family business, wielding their clout over the desperate. However, the latest senatorial surveys paint a dismal picture. Among the top candidates, only a scant few would pass an anti-corruption test, while many seem uninterested in meaningful legislation. Instead, they appear eager, salivating over the billions of pesos allocated as “undercover pork.” Come May 2025, we might be choosing not just senators, but the next wave of billionaires funded by our sweat and tears. Similarly, aspirants for Congress scramble ferociously for seats, lured by the promise of project insertions and limitless funding opportunities. The prospect of a windfall makes it clear: we are, in effect, on course to elect multi- millionaires, prioritizing financial gain over public service. At the local government level, mayors reign supreme within their realms, empowered by allocations that promote their personal wealth instead of community improvement. Elected officials at all levels must moderate their unbridled greed and genuinely serve their constituents—those intended to benefit from their positions of power. As voters in May, we owe it to ourselves and our communities to ensure those ascending to positions of authority don’t succumb to entitlement once in office. We must demand transparency regarding budget allocations and insist on accountability when elected officers fail to uphold their duty. Public servants should remember their primary obligation is to the people who entrusted them with power, not to profit-driven motives. Yet amidst this sea of corruption, let us also uplift the honest public servants dedicated to their communities despite the overwhelming tide of malfeasance. By highlighting their efforts and sharing stories grounded in ethical governance, we can inspire others to resist apathy, standing firm in our collective quest for justice. This Yuletide season calls us to action. It’s not merely a time for merriment, but a pivotal moment for unity, purpose, and resolve. We must carry hope in our hearts, striving relentlessly for change that benefits not only the present but future generations yearning for a fairer system free from the shackles of corruption. As we navigate through this election cycle, let us reject the insincere narratives churned out across social media. Candidates projecting images of “helpfulness” while harboring corruption must be firmly cast aside. We cannot afford the indulgence of electing individuals with tarnished records, human rights violators, or absentee politicians who disappear post-election. In the coming campaign, let’s not be seduced by the allure of populism or misleading narratives spun by candidates with questionable morals. Instead, we must critically assess who truly embodies the values of honesty, integrity, and genuine service to the people. Reflected upon the wisdom of the world’s greatest leader- politician-philosopher, Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius maintained that absolute power does not corrupt but reveals the character. He gave us an example of a leader who strived to cultivate a good soul and a good heart. At Christmas midnight tonight, evaluate your candidates thoroughly—mayors, councilors, governors, party list representatives, congressmen, senators, and their political parties. Do they embody a “good soul” and a “good heart”? If their actions suggest otherwise, discard them from your ballot in May. It’s time to reclaim our democracy and demand representatives worthy of the trust we bestow upon them. The possibility of a better country begins with each vote we cast, so let’s make them count! Real gifts are not lavish but rooted in the promise of a fairer society. We have the power to demand a government that prioritizes people over profit—a government that reflects our true aspirations and serves our collective dreams. Let us prepare ourselves to make informed choices that reflect our values. Let the spirit of the season invigorate our resolve for clean, effective governance free from the grip of corruption. The time for action is now, and it begins with each of us making a conscious choice in May 2025. We cannot afford to remain passive; our country demands our active participation, and it is up to us to ensure that we elect public officials who embody a “good soul and a good heart”.Giants release quarterback Daniel Jones just days after benching him EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The Daniel Jones era in New York is over. The lawsuit says the assault left her heavily bruised and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. In a memo sent to team officials, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, the NBA revealed that the FBI has connected some burglaries to “transnational South American Theft Groups” that are “reportedly well-organized, sophisticated rings that incorporate advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices.” Brock Purdy will miss Sunday's game for the 49ers with a shoulder injury SANTA CLARA, Calif. Purdy injured his right shoulder in last Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Purdy underwent an MRI that showed no structural damage but the shoulder didn’t improve during the week and Purdy was ruled out for the game. Left tackle Trent Williams is questionable with an ankle injury and will be a game-time decision. Red Bull says it doesn’t have a replacement rear wing in Las Vegas to fix the issue and little chance of getting two flown in from England ahead of the race. PLEASANTON, Calif. , Dec. 23, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- 10x Genomics, Inc. (Nasdaq: TXG), a leader in single cell and spatial biology, announced today it had secured a permanent injunction in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware against the GeoMx products sold by Bruker Corporation (Nasdaq: BRKR), which acquired the product line from NanoString Technologies. To minimize the risk of disruption to ongoing research, 10x Genomics requested a carve-out for GeoMx users who installed an instrument prior to the trial in November 2023 . The injunction, which the Court said it will enter in January 2025 , is expected to prohibit Bruker from making, using, selling or offering to sell in the United States its GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler and associated instruments, reagents and services for RNA and protein detection. At the request of 10x Genomics, the injunction will not block ongoing research by researchers who installed a GeoMx instrument prior to November 18, 2023 . Such customers can continue to purchase GeoMx reagents for use with existing GeoMx instruments for purposes of continuing their ongoing research. The Court found that making such an exception for ongoing research strikes a "workable balance between protecting the patentee's rights and protecting the public from the injunction's adverse effects." In addition, the Court affirmed the $31 million damages awarded by the November 2023 jury verdict, as well as supplemental damages and interest that will be added to the total damages when final judgment is entered. "Today's decision helps to safeguard our decade-long investment in innovation and ensures we can continue to develop groundbreaking technologies that help our customers revolutionize science," said Eric Whitaker , Chief Legal Officer at 10x Genomics. "10x exists to fuel scientific progress – not stifle it – and that is why we've done our utmost to ensure this injunction was structured to protect both our intellectual property and existing GeoMx customers' ongoing research." The Court recognized the harm NanoString's infringing conduct caused 10x when it wrote in its ruling, "Having been careful not to license its technology, 10x suffers when it proclaims itself as an innovator in spatial genomics but a competitor is using the same innovative, patented technology." Today's Court decision follows a November 2023 jury verdict that found that NanoString's GeoMx products willfully infringed seven patents exclusively licensed to 10x Genomics by Prognosys. During the trial, the jury heard testimony from the sole inventor of the patents, Illumina co-founder Mark Chee , and NanoString CEO Brad Gray and NanoString CSO Joe Beechem. After hearing all of the evidence, the jury determined that all seven patents had been infringed by NanoString, that each patent was valid, that NanoString willfully infringed those patents and that monetary damages were owed to 10x for the infringement of all seven patents. In affirming the jury's finding that NanoString willfully infringed, the Court relied on the evidence showing that NanoString knew or was willfully blind that its acts would cause infringement of 10x's rights. The asserted patents in Case No. 21-cv-653-MFK include (a) U.S. Patent No. 10,472,669; (b) U.S. Patent No. 10,961,566; (c) U.S. Patent No. 10,983,113; (d) U.S. Patent No. 10,996,219; (e) U.S. Patent No. 11,001,878; (f) U.S. Patent No. 11,008,607 and (g) U.S. Patent No. 11,293,917. SHAMED ex-minister Louise Haigh was moved from an earlier frontbench role after growing close to a nationalist politician. The ex-Transport Secretary, who quit last month over a fraud conviction , struck up a friendship with Colum Eastwood when she was Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary from 2020-21. At the time, Mr Eastwood, 41, led the Social Democratic and Labour Party which backs a united Ireland. The politics of Northern Ireland are sensitive given the history of sectarian violence during The Troubles. And Labour insiders were worried by the friendship’s potential impact, The Sun on Sunday has been told. Sir Keir Starmer moved Ms Haigh, 37, to Shadow Transport Secretary in his 2021 reshuffle. READ MORE ON LOUISE HAIGH The source said: “Northern Ireland is a sensitive brief. “You have got to tread the path between the nationalists and the Democratic Unionist Party .” Ms Haigh and Mr Eastwood did not respond to requests to comment, while Labour declined to comment. Ms Haigh quit as Transport Secretary nine days ago after it emerged she had committed a fraud offence in 2014. Most read in The Sun The year before she had told police that she had lost her work phone in a mugging , and later found it had not been taken but failed to inform officers. She was given a conditional discharge following the incident which happened before she became MP for Sheffield Heeley. Haigh described the incident as a genuine mistake from which she did not make any gain. She said Sir Keir knew of her conviction . He has said she was only asked to resign after “further information came to light” but has declined to say what.
When it comes to luxury, wealth, art, (and excess), Art Basel Miami tends to check all the boxes. The rich flock to South Florida for the annual year-end art fair that goes through this weekend, and while in recent years the market has been a little soft, it seems the crowds, and their high-priced purchases, are back . Not surprisingly, high-end automakers like BMW, Bentley, Jaguar ( which is another story ), and Lamborghini have used Art Basel Miami to launch new initiatives and connect with their ultra-wealthy clients. Lamborghini used the occasion to unveil a one-of-one art car version of its Urus SE hybrid SUV. While it is intended for one choice client, CEO Stephan Winkelmann is looking to entice other buyers as well. “[Art Basel Miami] is more and more something which is important for us because the combination of exclusive cars, and being also somehow a canvas for artists, is growing,” Winkelmann said in an interview with Yahoo Finance. Miami being in the US is a big factor, as it is the top market for the Italian luxury automaker, with Florida the second-biggest market for Lamborghini in the country, following California. Winkelmann said Lamborghini’s performance here and across the globe has been quite strong. “I think that we are in the best shape ever. We are after the first nine months having record deliveries, we have record [revenue], and also, most importantly, record operating profit,” he said. Global deliveries through Q3 hit 8,411 vehicles, up 8.6% from a year ago, with revenue up 20.1% to 2.43 billion euros ($2.56 billion), according to Lamborghini’s third quarter update. There are, of course, hiccups in some regions, including China. China is currently in a “crisis” due to weakness in the domestic real estate market, Winkelmann said, but Lamborghini is fortunate in that it can shift supply to regions like North America and Europe, where demand is still robust. Furthermore, Winkelmann noted that while the Chinese auto market is the world’s largest, only 10% of luxury automobiles are sold there, meaning for ultra-high-end automakers the impact from China is not as large compared to larger, mainstream carmakers. As for its outlook in the US, the prospect of tariffs coming for luxury European automobiles isn’t a concern, at least for the moment. Winkelmann has said in the past that he is for a free-trade world , and for now the company is doing business as usual, meaning it isn’t pushing forward imports. Doing business as usual for Lamborghini means hybridization too. The company laid out its electrification plans a few years back, and now all three products on sale — the Revuelto hypercar, Temerario supercar, and Urus SE “super SUV” — all use plug-in hybrid power. A fully electric GT car is coming by the end of the decade. [Yahoo Finance had a chance to test-drive an early prototype of Lamborghini’s Lanzador concept: See it here .] “The fact that we have all the lineup hybridized is very positive, because it's a simple equation: We are promising to our customers that the cars are [better] performing than the generation before, and at the same time, they have less CO2 [emissions],” Winkelmann said. The most important factor though, he said, is creating an “emotional driving experience.” The jury is still out on whether EVs can do that, but until then, Lamborghini will be toiling away to make an EV its clients love. “We have to prove that this [EV] is also going to be a very emotional car,” Winkelmann said. A chorus of support is growing behind actress Blake Lively after she filed a complaint alleging sexual harassment and a smear campaign against "It Ends With Us" co-star Justin Baldoni. Actress Amber Heard on Monday became the latest celebrity to speak out on behalf of the "Gossip Girl" alum over what she says was a coordinated social media effort to tarnish her name. Over the weekend, Lively filed a complaint claiming that Baldoni and a lead producer had behaved unacceptably during the filming of box office hit "It Ends With Us." The allegations included that Baldoni -- who also directed the film -- had spoken inappropriately about his sex life, and had sought to alter the film to include sex scenes that were not in the script and had not been agreed to. They also detailed how lead producer Jamey Heath had watched Lively while she was topless, despite having been asked to turn away. But the complaint goes into great detail -- including with texts and emails -- on a PR campaign to wreck her reputation and to divert attention from any public comments she might make about the men's alleged misbehavior. This was "a carefully crafted, coordinated, and resourced retaliatory scheme to silence her, and others from speaking out about the hostile environment that Mr Baldoni and Mr Heath created," the complaint says. It includes allegations that the two men hired a crisis PR team that amplified or planted negative stories about Lively on social media platforms. "You know we can bury anyone," Melissa Nathan, a member of the team, is alleged to have said, according to messages contained in the complaint. Heard's ex-husband Johnny Depp hired the same PR team during the high-profile defamation trial between the couple in 2022, in which a jury unanimously found that Heard defamed Depp over allegations he abused her. "Social media is the absolute personification of the classic saying 'A lie travels halfway around the world before truth can get its boots on,'" Heard said in a statement carried by NBC News. "I saw this firsthand and up close. It's as horrifying as it is destructive." Heard's support came on the heels of a joint statement by America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel, who starred with Lively in "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants." "As Blake's friends and sisters for over 20 years, we stand with her in solidarity as she fights back against the reported campaign waged to destroy her reputation," they wrote on Instagram. "Throughout the filming of 'It Ends with Us', we saw her summon the courage to ask for a safe workplace for herself and colleagues on set, and we are appalled to read the evidence of a premeditated and vindictive effort that ensued to discredit her voice." A lawyer for Wayfarer, the studio behind the film, said in a statement released to the New York Times that neither the studio, its executives, nor its PR team did anything to retaliate against Lively. "These claims are completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media," lawyer Bryan Freedman wrote. The complaint was lodged with the California Civil Rights Department, and is a precursor to a lawsuit. Major Hollywood talent agency WME -- which represents Lively -- has reportedly dropped Baldoni as a client.Charting Ethical Waters: How Objectivism Empowers Shipping Companies to Achieve Growth and Influence
