Two Democratic state senators re-elected on Nov. 5 are expected to resign on Jan. 9, prompting calls to reform the vacancy process for selecting replacements. Sen. Chris Hansen, D-Denver, is expected to resign on Jan. 9. Hansen won re-election with better than 80% of the vote. His only opponent for his Senate District 31 seat was a Libertarian. Hansen has been hired as the CEO of Durango-based La Plata Electric, a co-op that will pay him at least $500,000 annually. Sen. Janet Buckner, D-Aurora, announced Thursday she will step down on Jan. 9. Buckner ran unopposed in the Nov. 5 election. She's retiring to focus on family and travel and mentor young community leaders. A third member of the state Senate, Sen. Kevin Van Winkle, R-Highlands Ranch, was elected to the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners on Nov. 5 but has not yet announced when he will step down. Vacancies in the state legislature are a growing problem. In the 2023-24 session, 28 lawmakers out of 100 gained their seats through the vacancy process at some point in their legislative history. That included Buckner, Hansen, and Van Winkle. The number of people on a vacancy committee that elected a new House or Senate member ranged from a low of four to a high of 95, with an average of about 40, according to a Colorado Politics analysis. House members represent about 89,000 constituents; Senate members represent about 165,000. As a result, the system lets a handful of party insiders choose who represents hundreds of thousands of Coloradans. Democrats and Republicans alike have criticized the vacancy process, although some also argued that, while it's not ideal, it's practical. Buckner was selected to replace her late husband, Rep. John Buckner, in 2015. Hansen was chosen for the Senate District 31 seat in 2020 after Sen. Lois Court stepped down due to illness. Van Winkle was appointed to his Senate seat in June 2022 to finish out the term of Sen. Chris Holbert of Douglas County. Van Winkle ran for and won the seat in the 2022 election. He did not return a call for comment. The announcements are raising eyebrows and generating concern over three more vacancies, which are unlikely to be filled until after the 2025 session starts on Jan. 8. In the 2024 session, Rep. Bob Marshall, D-Highlands Ranch, hoped to address the problem with a concurrent resolution that would require voter approval to begin changing the vacancy process. Under House Concurrent Resolution 24-1004, any state representative or senator appointed by a vacancy committee would be prohibited from serving the term immediately following the term for which they were appointed, meaning they'd be barred from running for that seat in the following election. While the resolution won a bipartisan 7-4 vote from the House State, Civic, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee, it died on the House calendar. Marshall said Thursday he'll run it again in the 2025 session. Marshall reacted to the latest announcement via X (formerly Twitter). Tweet by Rep. Bob Marshall, D-Highlands Ranch, on the rash of vacancies in the state Senate due to resignations. Marshall is no longer alone in wanting to reform the vacancy process. Thursday, Democratic State Party Chair Shad Murib voiced his support for reform. A statement from the state party noted that both Democratic districts—Senate District 31 (Hansen) and Senate District 29 (Buckner)—are single-county districts, meaning the state party has a say in advising both the county parties and district leadership on how to administer their vacancy committees. The statement added that the Denver Democratic Party, which will handle the SD31 vacancy, will prioritize "transparency, accessibility, and fairness in this process and plans to host opportunities for the public to get to know the candidates, livestream the meeting, and promote candidate and vacancy information on its website." The SD 29 vacancy will be handled by the Arapahoe County Democratic Party, which, according to the statement, has "a proven track record of running excellent and accessible vacancy committees." He thanked Buckner and Hansen for their service and said the party places a "high premium on transparency, accountability and public access to the vacancy process." But the time for reform has come, Murib indicated. "The growing number of senators and representatives of both parties serving in office as a result of vacancy committee selections and not traditional elections should concern every Coloradan, and it certainly concerns me," he said. "Regardless of the high standards we place on ourselves to run as great a vacancy committee process as the law allows, the fact remains that vacancy committees are small and don’t provide for the same type of public input and scrutiny as a traditional election. In some cases, vacancies have preempted vigorous primary campaigns that allow Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters to choose Party nominees without anyone having the advantage of incumbency." State law and the state's "unique and prohibitive budget restrictions provide real logistical concerns regarding reform, including cost and the potential for districts to go unrepresented for months. Because of this, we have been hesitant to entertain conversations about transitioning to special elections or reforming this process." The time has come, he said, to make the process better. "Speculation that lawmakers strategize their resignations to hand-pick their replacements, or climb the ladder of elected office, is also a growing sentiment among the public. While we have worked hard to prevent this from ever occurring, it is incumbent on us to do everything we can to bolster trust in our democracy by acknowledging and addressing this issue proactively." Murib pledged to communicate with the governor’s office, the Secretary of State, and House & Senate leadership in the coming days to begin discussing reforms to the vacancy committee process. Marshall told Colorado Politics during the spring that "if you have a democratic form of government, having 30% chosen by a cloistered group of individuals runs counter to that entire idea or ideal." Marshall indicated that even allowing the governor to make those appointments would be better than the status quo since the governor is elected and held accountable by all the voters. He has also advocated for a special election process, although acknowledging it's expensive and could lead to even further delays in representation under the Gold Dome. In February, Marshall told Colorado Politics that he had been told a constituent wanted to be in the legislature but didn’t want to run for election. “I want a vacancy appointment!” the constituent said. “People are starting to think it’s the norm," Marshall said. "It’s not." Initiative 197, pushed in 2024 by former DaVita CEO Kent Thiry, would have required a special election for vacancy appointments unless there isn't enough time before a general election to do so. In that case, the governor would make the appointment for the vacancy. Thiry, however, abandoned that effort to focus on Proposition 131, his ranked-choice voting/open primary election measure. Voters rejected it by about six percentage points. The 2025 General Assembly will have at least 19 members who gained their seats through the vacancy process, with 11 in the House and eight in the Senate, including the replacements for Buckner, Hansen and Van Winkle. However, depending on whether current House members win those vacancies, that could add up to another three to the list of House members selected through the vacancy process.

Mumbai: Escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, rising crude oil prices, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and Q2 GDP will be the major factors for the stock market next week, according to experts. In the last week, the Indian equity markets ended their two-week losing streak on a high note, navigating a volatile week marked by geopolitical tensions, but a strong recovery by the bulls on Friday, supported by exit poll predictions of an NDA alliance victory in the Maharashtra elections, helped stabilise sentiment. Nifty closed 2.39 per cent higher at 23,907.25 and Sensex closed 2.54 per cent higher at 79,117. Due to this rise, Nifty and Sensex rallied by 1.45 per cent and 1.78 per cent, respectively on a weekly basis. This rally saw participation from all sectors except energy. Realty, auto and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) contributed the most. Palka Arora Chopra, Director of Master Capital Services said, “Market sentiment was also lifted by the results of the Maharashtra and Jharkhand elections which hold crucial implications for both states and national politics. The stability in Maharashtra could trigger a rally in the stock market, boosting investor confidence due to the continuity of pro-business policies, especially after uncertainty following previous coalition shifts.” Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart said, “Bank Nifty remains above the 200-day moving average. 51,300 to 52,000 are important resistance levels. If it breaks then 52,600 to 53,300 will be a higher resistance level.” Chopra further said, “During the week, Nifty closed in the green above 23,900. 24,100 is going to be a key resistance level for the National Stock Exchange (NSE) benchmark. If the index goes above this level then it can go up to 24,500. 23,700 is an important support level. If it breaks, then it can go up to 23,400.”Seibert misses an extra point late as the Commanders lose their 3rd in a row, 34-26 to the Cowboys

Cardinals' sudden 3-game tailspin has turned their once solid playoff hopes into a long shot The midseason four-game winning streak that lifted the Arizona Cardinals into the playoff picture seemed as though it happened fast. Their subsequent free fall has been even more jarring. David Brandt, The Associated Press Dec 9, 2024 2:52 PM Dec 9, 2024 3:05 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon looks for a call during the second half of an NFL football game against the Seattle Seahawks, Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, in Glendale, Ariz. (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin) The midseason four-game winning streak that lifted the Arizona Cardinals into the playoff picture seemed as though it happened fast. Their subsequent free fall has been even more jarring. The Cardinals could have moved into a tie for first place in the NFC West with a home win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Instead, they were thoroughly outplayed in a 30-18 loss and are now tied for last in the tightly packed division. Arizona has lost three straight and will face an uphill battle to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2021. The Seahawks (8-5) are in first place, followed by the Rams (7-6), Cardinals (6-7) and 49ers (6-7). Even more daunting for their playoff hopes, the Cardinals lost both of their games against the Seahawks this season, meaning a tiebreaker would go to Seattle. Four games remain. “I just told them we put ourselves in a little bit of a hole now, but all you can do is attack tomorrow, learn tomorrow and have a good week of practice,” second-year coach Jonathan Gannon said. There are plenty of reasons the Cardinals lost to the Seahawks, including Kyler Murray's two interceptions, a handful of holding penalties, a porous run defense and a brutal missed field goal. It all adds up to the fact Arizona is playing its worst football of the season at a time when it needed its best. “I’m sure we’ll stick to our process, but we have to tweak some things,” Gannon said. "I have to tweak some things.” What’s working It's probably faint praise, but the Cardinals did make the game interesting in the second half while trying to fight back from a 27-10 deficit. Murray's shovel pass to James Conner for a 2-yard touchdown and subsequent 2-point conversion cut the margin to 27-18. The Cardinals had a chance to make it a one-score contest early in the fourth quarter, but Chad Ryland's 40-yard field goal attempt bounced off the left upright. “I thought we spotted them a lot of points there, but then we battled back,” Gannon said. “I appreciate their effort. That was good. We battled back there, had a couple chances to even cut the lead a little more, but ultimately didn’t get it done." What needs help Murray's in a bit of a mini-slump after throwing two interceptions in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. He also didn't do much in the run game against the Seahawks, with 16 yards on three carries. The quarterback's decision-making was nearly flawless for much of the season and the Cardinals need that good judgment to return. “I’m not looking at it like I have to try to be Superman,” Murray said. “I don’t think that’s the answer. I just need to play within the offense like we’ve done for the majority of the season. Today, I didn’t. Like I said, throwing two picks puts yourself behind the eight ball.” Said Gannon: “I thought he stuck in there and made some big time throws, though, but he has to protect the ball a little bit better. That’s not just him, that’s all 11. So there’ll be a lot of corrections off those plays." Stock up The defense didn't have its best day, but it's not Budda Baker's fault. The two-time All-Pro safety is having another phenomenal season and was all over the field against the Seahawks, finishing with 18 tackles. Baker's energy is relentless and he's the unquestioned leader of a group that has been better than expected this season, even with Sunday's mediocre performance. Stock down Left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. had a tough day, getting flagged for holding three times, though one of those penalties was declined by the Seahawks. The second-year player moved from right tackle to the left side during the offseason and the transition has gone well, but Sunday was a step backward. Injuries The Cardinals remain fairly healthy. DL Roy Lopez (ankle) and P Blake Gillikin (ankle) left Sunday's game, but neither injury is expected to be long term. Key number 9 — It looks as if the Cardinals will go a ninth straight season without winning the NFC West. The last time they won the division was 2015 with coach Bruce Arians and a core offense of quarterback Carson Palmer, running back David Johnson and receiver Larry Fitzgerald. What’s next The Cardinals are in must-win territory now for any chance at the playoffs. They'll host the New England Patriots on Sunday. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL David Brandt, The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? Have a story/tip? ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan's defense of the national championship has fallen woefully short. The Wolverines started the season ranked No. 9 in the AP Top 25, making them the third college football team since 1991 to be ranked worse than seventh in the preseason poll after winning a national title. Michigan (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) failed to meet those modest expectations, barely becoming eligible to play in a bowl and putting the program in danger of losing six or seven games for the first time since the Brady Hoke era ended a decade ago. The Wolverines potentially can ease some of the pain with a win against rival and second-ranked Ohio State (10-1, 7-1, No. 2 CFP) on Saturday in the Horseshoe, but that would be a stunning upset. Ohio State is a 21 1/2-point favorite, according to the BetMGM Sportsbook, and that marks just the third time this century that there has been a spread of at least 20 1/2 points in what is known as "The Game." Michigan coach Sherrone Moore doesn't sound like someone who is motivating players with an underdog mentality. "I don't think none of that matters in this game," Moore said Monday. "It doesn't matter the records. It doesn't matter anything. The spread, that doesn't matter." How did Michigan end up with a relative mess of a season on the field, coming off its first national title since 1997? Winning it all with a coach and star player contemplating being in the NFL for the 2024 season seemed to have unintended consequences for the current squad. The Wolverines closed the College Football Playoff with a win over Washington on Jan. 8; several days later quarterback J.J. McCarthy announced he was skipping his senior season; and it took more than another week for Jim Harbaugh to bolt to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. In the meantime, most quality quarterbacks wanting to transfer had already enrolled at other schools and Moore was left with lackluster options. Davis Warren beat out Alex Orji to be the team's quarterback for the opener and later lost the job to Orji only to get it back again. No matter who was under center, however, would've likely struggled this year behind an offensive line that sent six players to the NFL. The Wolverines lost one of their top players on defense, safety Rod Moore, to a season-ending injury last spring and another one, preseason All-America cornerback Will Johnson, hasn't played in more than a month because of an injury. The Buckeyes are not planning to show any mercy after losing three straight in the series. "We're going to attack them," Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer said. "We know they're going to come in here swinging, too, and they've still got a good team even though the record doesn't indicate it. This game, it never matters what the records are." While a win would not suddenly make the Wolverines' season a success, it could help Moore build some momentum a week after top-rated freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan. "You come to Michigan to beat Ohio," said defensive back Quinten Johnson, intentionally leaving the word State out when referring to the rival. "That's one of the pillars of the Michigan football program. "It doesn't necessarily change the fact of where we are in the season, but it definitely is one of the defining moments of your career here at Michigan." LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Austin Seibert missed his second extra point of the game with 21 seconds left after Washington’s Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin connected on an 86-yard touchdown, Dallas’ Juanyeh Thomas returned the ensuing onside kick attempt for a touchdown, and the Cowboys pulled out a 34-26 victory Sunday that extended the Commanders’ skid to three games. Seibert, who missed the previous two games with a right hip injury, was wide left on the point-after attempt following a low snap. Thomas then took the kick back 43 yards as the Cowboys (4-7) ended their losing streak at five in improbable fashion. Part of that was the play of backup Cooper Rush, who threw for 247 yards and two TDs in his third start in place of starter Dak Prescott. Part was also the defense forcing two turnovers, as Chauncey Golston ripped the ball out of Brian Robinson Jr.’s hands for what was called an interception of Daniels in the second quarter, and Donovan Wilson stripped John Bates midway through the fourth. KaVonte Turpin provided the fireworks with a spinning, 99-yard kickoff return TD seconds after Daniels found Zach Ertz in the end zone and scored on a 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to three with 3:02 left. In the final three minutes alone, the Commanders (7-5) scored 10 points and allowed Thomas' TD. All that after the score was 10-9 through three quarters before madness ensued. Washington's playoff hopes that looked solid not long ago are now in serious jeopardy after losing to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Dallas. Before the scoring outburst late, much of this defeat had to do with Daniels and the offense not being able to find any kind of a rhythm. The Cowboys did, despite playing without their two best offensive linemen, top cornerback and starting tight end. Rush's 6-yard pass to Jalen Tolbert was Dallas' first third-quarter TD of the season, and his 22-yarder to Luke Schoonmaker came after Wilson's forced fumble. Daniels finished 25 of 38 for 274 yards, including his second interception of the game on a failed Hail Mary as the clock expired. Rico Dowdle ran 19 times for 86 yards to spring the upset for the Cowboys, who were 10 1/2-point underdogs on BetMGM Sportsbook. Cowboys: LG Tyler Smith was inactive with ankle and knee injuries. ... RG Zack Martin (ankle), CB Trevon Diggs (groin/knee) and TE Jake Ferguson (concussion) were ruled out prior to game day and did not travel for the game. Commanders: RB Austin Ekeler was injured on a kickoff return in the final seconds. ... Robinson left with an ankle injury in the first half, returned and then left again. ... RT Andrew Wylie was concussed in the third quarter and did not return. ... C Tyler Biadasz was evaluated for a concussion in the fourth. ... CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) missed a third consecutive game since being acquired at the trade deadline from New Orleans. Cowboys: Host the New York Giants on Thursday in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game in Dallas. Commanders: Host the Tennessee Titans next Sunday in Washington’s final game before its late bye week. Baby's inquest finds neglect and serious failures after family's £250k battleThe Golden State Valkyries will be selecting Kate Martin and Kayla Thornton in the 2025 WNBA expansion draft , a source briefed on the decision told The Athletic . The full results of the draft will be announced Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. Per the rules outlined by the league and the collective bargaining agreement for the expansion draft, the 12 current WNBA franchises are allowed to protect six players. The Valkyries are then able to choose one unprotected player from each team; that can be a player on the active roster, a player who the organization has draft rights to, or is on their international rights list. Advertisement Martin will arguably be the most popular player taken by Golden State Friday. The 2024 rookie out of Iowa, where she helped Caitlin Clark lead the Hawkeyes to two consecutive trips to the national title game, had a strong start to her first WNBA season. As the Las Vegas Aces dealt with the absence of Chelsea Gray , Martin averaged 19.3 minutes over her first ten games and made 37 percent of her 3-pointers. However, Martin saw less court time as the Aces returned to full health, cracking double-digit minutes only twice in the second half of the season. Her postseason minutes consisted of one appearance in a blowout. Las Vegas was always going to protect its core four of A’ja Wilson , Kelsey Plum , Jackie Young , and Gray in the draft, but Martin could have been one of the final two players. Instead, Martin will start the second chapter of her WNBA career with the Valkyries, and the expansion team will benefit from the three remaining cost-controlled seasons on her rookie deal. The New York Liberty had to make some of the toughest decisions league-wide thanks to the depth of their roster. The reigning champions had to prioritize their full starting lineup and Nyara Sabally , who was the X-factor in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. That left their entire international list — including Marine Johannès and Han Xu — exposed, as well as critical bench players. Golden State is electing to take one of those veteran reserves in Kayla Thornton, a player who general manager Ohemaa Nyanin is intimately familiar with, as Nyanin was the assistant GM in New York prior to joining the Valkyries. Thornton appeared in every playoff game for the Liberty during their title run, averaging the second-most minutes (12.5) among bench players. Her best peformance of the postseason came in Game 2 of the semifinals against Las Vegas, when she was a game-best plus-13 and helped New York take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. Golden State will be the fourth stop in Thornton’s WNBA career, and the 32-year-old veteran has one year remaining on a contract extension she signed with the Liberty in 2023.
