Suspect in custody after New York killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

Authorities have arrested the man suspected of killing UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson in a brazen shooting outside a Manhattan hotel last week, ending a massive five-day manhunt. or signup to continue reading The suspect, identified as Luigi Mangione, 26, was captured in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Momday after he was spotted eating at a McDonald's by an employee of the fast food restaurant who believed he resembled the gunman, officials said at a news conference. Mangione was found with a "ghost gun" - a firearm assembled from parts, making it untraceable - and a silencer consistent with the weapon used to shoot Thompson, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. He also had clothing and a mask similar to those worn by the killer. The ghost gun may have been produced by a 3D printer, said Joseph Kenny, the NYPD's chief of detectives. Mangione, a Maryland native, had multiple fraudulent identifications, including a fake New Jersey ID that matched the one used by the gunman to check into a Manhattan hostel days before the shooting, officials said. Police also found a handwritten document that speaks to "both his motivation and his mindset," Tisch said. While the document did not mention specific targets, Mangione harboured "ill will toward corporate America," Kenny said. Mangione graduated from a private all-boys school in Baltimore as valedictorian in 2016 before earning dual engineering degrees at the University of Pennsylvania, according to media reports, social media posts and school records. His last known address was in Honolulu, officials said. He was arrested on firearms charges by Altoona police and was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday evening. He will likely be extradited to New York to face charges related to the murder. Thompson, 50, was gunned down outside a Manhattan hotel early on Wednesday morning by a masked man who appeared to wait for his arrival before shooting the executive from behind. The suspect ran from the scene and then rode a bike into Central Park. Surveillance video captured him exiting the park and taking a taxi to a bus station in northern Manhattan, where police believe he used a bus to flee the city. Police said Thompson appeared to be deliberately targeted. The words "deny," "defend" and "depose" were carved into shell casings found at the scene, several news outlets have reported. The words evoke the title of a book critical of the insurance industry published in 2010 titled Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It. Mangione graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020 with bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering, according to a commencement program. A Facebook profile that appears to belong to Mangione identified him as a native of Towson, Maryland, and a former student at the University of Pennsylvania. Photos appear to show Mangione at Stanford University wearing Stanford-branded clothing. Neither university immediately responded to requests for comment. An X account that appears owned by Mangione says he has an MSE and BSE. in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Honolulu, Hawaii. Thompson's murder unleashed a wave of frustration from Americans who have seen their health insurance claims or care denied, faced unexpected costs or paid more for premiums and medical care - all trends that are rising, according to recent data. Thompson, a father of two, had been CEO of UnitedHealth Group's insurance unit since April 2021, part of a 20-year career with the company. He had been in New York to attend the company's annual investor conference. "Our hope is that today's apprehension brings some relief to Brian's family, friends, colleagues and the many others affected by this unspeakable tragedy," a spokesperson for UnitedHealth said. The telco giant quietly made the move this year after using the two widely-adored athletes as the face of the company during its recent turbulence. It appears even using two of the country’s most popular figures hasn’t been enough to cover for the fundamental issues that have plagued the telecommunications organisation. Ricciardo has been particularly synonymous with the brand after taking up a marketing position as Optus’ Chief of Optimism . The role included fronting several campaigns for the brand and featuring in viral stunts, including last year’s gimmick of the Formula 1 star going undercover as a storefront Optus employee. Ricciardo and Optus have worked together for four years, but the partnership will not be progressing, as exposed in changes to the former Red Bull driver’s LinkedIn profile which no longer mentions his ties with the company. Barty was also on the Optus payroll as the so-called Chief of Inspiration for the past two years. Ash Barty and Daniel Ricciardo. MORE: 8 things you didn’t know you could be fired for Their separation comes after Optus’ former chief executive Kelly Bayer Rosmarin was replaced by Stephen Rue in September. Optus confirmed the parting of ways with a brief message first issued to The Australian Financial Review . “The decision was taken as we looked to rebuild customer trust and focus on the fundamentals that we know are important to them – a resilient network, great value products and services, and simple, efficient customer service,” an Optus spokesperson said. Ricciardo is heading into the unknown in 2025. Having been cut by Red Bull’s junior team VCARB earlier this year, the 35-year-old has been linked with many new jobs that will keep him on the track. Right now he is without a seat for next year and is coming off one of the hardest years of his career where he was out-performed by his former teammate Yuki Tsunoda and replaced by Kiwi Liam Lawson. It’s why The Australian Financial Review’s Myriam Robin described Optus’ move as a “one-two kick in the guts for Daniel”. It emerged this week the axed F1 driver has been enjoying the unemployed life but still has plenty of options on the table. F1’s loss could be another category’s gain with the Aussie’s marketability and global recognition making him a prime target for the right team. While some have suggested the veteran could be a target for the new Cadillac team set to join the F1 grid in 2026 due to Ricciardo’s popularity in the US, his future has still not been publicly decided. Which makes the latest rumblings out of Toyota all the more intriguing. Toyota are not on the F1 grid as a stand-alone team but have been in the past. Toyota Gazoo Racing was announced as a technical partner for the Haas F1 Team as of October and will provide design, technical and manufacturing services. However, Toyota has strong motorsport roots around the world, featuring in NASCAR and, as of 2026, will join Australia’s Supercars Championship with its GR Supra. Race.news reported last week that the company was prepared to make a “whatever it takes” bid to lure Ricciardo out of retirement. Believed to potentially be a $10m offer, similar to what he was reportedly earning at VCARB this season, it’s been described as a “blank cheque operation”. Barty, meanwhile, is sadly loving her life in retirement. The three-time grand slam champion retired in the prime of her career aged 25 and is loving life as a mum. The Aussie tennis champion and husband Garry Kissick, welcomed their first child, Hayden, in July 2023. Australia would dearly love to see both of them back in action. If the assessment of assistant coach Nigel Henry is anything to go by, then San Juan Jabloteh’s schoolboy football stars Derrell “ Zum Zum” Garcia and Lyndell Sween are expected to get much more playing time when taking on season front-runners Defence Force today at the La Horquetta Recreation Ground from 6 p.m. The second week of the Trinidad and Tobago Premier Football League Tier One kicks off with another strong double-header at Phase II La Horquetta, where the home team Terminix La Horquetta Rangers, also face a tough Club Sando at 8 p.m. Tomorrow, action shifts to the Arima Velodrome for another double-header, while on Sunday, both of the top two teams of the 2023-2024 season are in action at the Police Barracks in St James. Led by national footballers Joevin and Alvin Jones, runners-up Miscellaneous Police FC will be looking for a first win of the season against Tobago FC Phoenix, who went to South and beat Point Fortin Civic 2-1 at the Mahaica Oval. The second match sees champions AC Port of Spain taking on Caledonia AIA, both having won on the opening day. On match-day one, Defence Force looked up to the hype when edging Police 2-1, with both teams strongly showing they are highly likely to be among this season’s top contenders. New Army recruit Kevin “Nash” Molino was a standout, as even on a very heavy surface, Defence Force tried to produce an attractive, quick brand of play which new head coach Densill Theobald is looking for. On opening day, St Anthony’s College striker Andell Fraser was a starter, while the schools league’s top-scorer Garcia, and Sween, were substitutes, as a young San Juan Jabloteh unit, coached by former national midfielder Marvin Gordon, made the first-half running. But after Jabloteh had missed a penalty, Central FC came into their own, last season’s strugglers looking much stronger with John-Paul Rochford and Jameel “Shooter” Neptune coming from AC Port of Spain to join other top recruits such as Tyronne Charles, Kevon “Showtime Woodley and Kadeem Corbin. “The players that we put on, they did not show up because we put them on a little too late, which would be Sween and “Zum”,” Jabloteh assistant coach Henry stated after their 3-1 loss to a revamped Central FC Reboot. “We be learning (about) the players. We learning their style of play, so we will come to it,” Henry suggested. Admitting that Central FC grew into the game, head coach Jason Spence also credited Jabloteh’s youngsters. “I must give kudos to Jabloteh because they have a nice, young, vibrant team,” Spence said. “They kept coming at us, but I felt as though once we managed the game well, our quality would have been able to show (eventually), and that’s exactly what happened.” UPCOMING TTPFL TIER ONE MATCHES: Today 6 p.m. -San Juan Jabloteh v Defence Force Elite, La Horquetta Rec, Phase II 8 p.m. - Terminix LA Rangers v Club Sando FC, La Horquetta Rec, Phase II Tomorrow 5 p.m. -Prison Service FC v Heritage Petroleum Point Fortin Civic, Arima Velodrome 7 p.m. - FC Eagles v Central FC, Arima Velodrome Sunday 5 p.m.- Miscellanous Police FC v FC Phoenix, Police Barracks, St James 7 p.m. - AC Port of Spain v Caledonia AIA, Police Barracks, St JamesBKTI stock soars to 52-week high, reaches $36.88 amid growth

US President-elect Donald Trump's proposals to impose sweeping tariffs on imports could counter earlier efforts to cool inflation, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Tuesday, warning that consumer prices could rise. Her comments at the Wall Street Journal's CEO Council Summit come as Trump has vowed broad tariffs of at least 10 percent on all imports, and higher rates on goods from China, Canada and Mexico. Imposing broad-based tariffs could "raise prices significantly for American consumers and create cost pressures on firms" which rely on imported goods, Yellen said when asked about Trump's plans. She cautioned that this could weigh on the competitiveness of certain sectors and increase costs to households. "This is a strategy I worry could derail the progress that we've made on inflation, and have adverse consequences on growth," she said. But she defended efforts by President Joe Biden's administration to impose targeted tariffs on Chinese goods to counter unfair trade practices by Beijing. She has previously raised concern over China's industrial overcapacity -- which risks a flood of underpriced goods into global markets and could undermine the development of key US industries. On Tuesday, Yellen also expressed regret that the United States has not made more progress on the country's deficit, saying she believes it "needs to be brought down, especially now that we're in an environment of higher interest rates." She stressed the importance of an independent Federal Reserve too, saying that countries perform better economically when central banks are allowed to exercise their best judgment without political influence. Trump has said that he would like "at least" a say over setting the Fed's interest rate. "I think it's a mistake to become involved in commenting on the Fed and certainly taking steps to compromise its independence," said Yellen. "I believe it tends to undermine the confidence of financial markets and, ultimately, of Americans in an important institution," she added. Yellen noted that she has spoken with Trump's Treasury chief nominee, billionaire hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, congratulating him on his nomination. bys/bjtLONDON (AP) — West Ham players will show their support for teammate Michail Antonio following his serious injury in a car crash by wearing items of clothing bearing the striker's name ahead of the Premier League game against Wolverhampton on Monday. The players will warm up in “Antonio 9” jerseys and walk on to the field in tops adorning his name, West Ham said. The club will put the walk-out tops up for auction along with every match jersey worn against Wolves, with the proceeds going to medical charities and matched by the club’s board. Antonio, a 34-year-old Jamaica international, is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery on what West Ham described as a “lower limb fracture.” He was involved in an accident outside London on Saturday, after which he was hospitalized and kept under close supervision. Unverified images of a heavily damaged Ferrari were shared on social media. It was not known if it was the car involved in the accident. “He remains in everyone’s thoughts as he continues his rehabilitation,” West Ham said of Antonio. “Everyone at the club would like to reiterate their heartfelt thanks to the first responders, emergency services, air ambulance staff and the NHS (National Health Service) for the incredible support given to Michail in the wake of the accident.” Antonio has made more than 300 appearances for West Ham since joining the club from Nottingham Forest in 2015. Troubled regional airline Rex has been accused of misleading and deceptive conduct by the corporate regulator. Login or signup to continue reading The Australian Securities and Investments Commission is taking the carrier to the NSW Supreme Court, after further alleging Rex contravened its continuous disclosure obligations. The commission is pursuing former executive chair Lim Kim Hai over the disclosure breach, claiming Mr Lim and board members John Sharp, Lincoln Pan and Siddharth Khotkar contravened their directors' duties. "Our case will allege serious governance failures at Rex," commission chair John Longo said in a statement on Wednesday. "Rex's directors had a responsibility to take reasonable steps to ensure the company complied with the law and we will seek to hold them to account. "We will allege four of Rex's directors breached their duties because they failed to take steps to ensure the market had accurate information about the company's financial performance." The regulator is seeking declarations, pecuniary penalties and disqualification orders against Mr Lim, Mr Sharp, Mr Pan and Mr Khotkar. Rex entered voluntary administration in July, with its businesses around $500 million in debt across the five groups in the organisation. Nominally a regional carrier, the airline made an aggressive push to compete on key capital-city routes against industry heavyweights Qantas and Virgin in 2021. It has struggled financially since, reporting a bottom-line net loss of $3.2 million for the first half of the 2023/24 financial year. Its expansion included competing on Sydney-to-Melbourne flights, one of the busiest routes in the world. The consumer watchdog found average fares on city routes went up 13 per cent in the two months after Rex stopped those services. Ernst & Young Australia were appointed administrators but are yet to find a buyer and at least 600 workers have been made redundant. Rex was given a $80 million loan facility from the federal government to keep the vital regional carrier operating. The airline scrapped all capital city flights when it entered administration but has continued servicing regional routes. Formed in 2002, Rex is Australia's largest independent regional airline and makes about 1050 flights a week on 45 routes. (NASDAQ: MIND ) ("MIND" or the "Company") today announced financial results for its fiscal 2025 third quarter ended October 31, 2024 . We continue to capitalize on macro tailwinds and customer engagement to stimulate order flow and generate improved results. We are also continually working to improve our execution, efficiency and cost structure, which we expect to contribute to sustained profitability in future quarters. As in the second quarter, we generated positive cash flow from operations in this quarter, increasing our cash balance to $3.5 million as of October 31, 2024 . "We have begun our fiscal fourth quarter with a strong backlog of approximately $26.2 million , essentially flat compared to our second quarter. Looking closer, however, we made substantial order deliveries during the third quarter that contributed to our 21% sequential revenue growth, and we were able to balance this growth with new orders. We expect this trend to continue in future periods and have an active pipeline of pending orders and other prospects that total more than twice our backlog of orders received. The combination of our improved capital structure, encouraging business environment, robust backlog and exceptional pipeline of opportunities gives us confidence for improved financial results in the coming quarters and fiscal year," concluded Capps. Company management also believes that these non-GAAP financial measures enhance the ability of investors to analyze the Company's business trends and to understand the Company's performance. In addition, the Company may utilize non-GAAP financial measures as guides in its forecasting, budgeting, and long-term planning processes and to measure operating performance for some management compensation purposes. Any analysis of non-GAAP financial measures should be used only in conjunction with results presented in accordance with GAAP.
