While NIST released on July 26, 2024, most organizations are just beginning to digest and implement its guidance, with the formation of internal AI Councils as a first step in AI governance. So as AI adoption and risk increases, it’s time to understand why sweating the small and not-so-small stuff matters and where we go from here. Recently, I attended the annual member conference of the , a non-profit organization focused on improving cybersecurity defense for enterprises, universities, government agencies, and other organizations. From the discussions, it is clear that today, the critical focus for CISOs, CIOs, CDOs, and CTOs centers on protecting proprietary AI models from attack and protecting proprietary data from being ingested by public AI models. While a smaller number of organizations are concerned about the former problem, those in this category realize that they must protect against prompt injection attacks that cause models to drift, hallucinate, or completely fail. In the early days of AI deployment, there was no well-known incident equivalent to the 2013 Target breach that represented how an attack might play out. Most of the evidence is academic at this point in time. However, executives who have deployed their own models have begun to focus on how to protect their integrity, given it will be only a matter of time before a major attack becomes public information, resulting in brand damage and potentially greater harm. The latter issue, data protection, touches every company. How do you ensure that your core IP, code, customer data, etc., isn’t intentionally or accidentally exfiltrated into a public LLM model? It’s become ultra-important for CISOs to monitor LLM interactions, track protected source code in cloud repositories (repos), and prevent unauthorized AI indexing of intellectual property and other private data. From the data observed at the recent conference and talking with other industry security executives, it is clear that only a minority of organizations have deployed solutions to protect their enterprises against AI dangers. In general, it appears that there are three mindsets at this point in time: No matter your beliefs, protecting your organization’s internal data has to be at the top of the CISO checklist. For those with proprietary AI models, preventing malicious attacks, data leaks, or model contamination (both accidental and intentional) are critical tasks. Time is short to deliberate further on activating these cyber protections. As , it’s time to advance these organizational efforts in 2025. CISOs are and should be concerned about several AI-related areas in their cybersecurity pursuits. One is the monitoring of employee’s AI use. While many organizations can now track which Large Language Models (LLMs) employees are accessing, can your teams monitor the actual prompt content? For many, that’s a significant blind spot. Additionally, does your enterprise flat-out restrict or permit public LLM access? That’s an additional hand-wringing dilemma shared by technology executives. Even if there is a prohibition on corporate networks and assets, will employees find a way around these restrictions if they believe that they provide a shortcut to getting their work done? This can create the problem of Shadow AI, which organizations should avoid. Second, enterprises face concerns over data protection. AI usage may bring the risk of sensitive data exfiltration through AI interactions. Thus, CISOs must emphasize the need for a balance between accessibility and security and oversee the growing demand for logging and tracking capabilities. For example, a concern that security executives frequently discuss is the monitoring of source code movement into public repos or LLMs where it should never flow. Several notorious instances have been made public where developers foolishly or accidentally used public resources to troubleshoot or look for advice on how to fix their code. These have led to the exposure of core IP, API keys, and other sensitive data. So, how do you prevent your source code from being put into a public GitHub or GitLab repo or input to ChatGPT? While employee training is a must to avoid these behaviors, in some cases it goes directly against the desires of the development team to maximize productivity and meet schedule deadlines. I’ve talked to development executives who have encouraged the use of public tools and repos for their employees who are “stuck.” As one recently told me, it can create a time and quality advantage to upload code segments into public repos, so long as it is just a small enough segment that IP leakage is avoided. But how does one measure the risk of “small enough”? These are the types of situations that are driving a considerable thrust around next-generation data exfiltration, protection, and prevention. While the foundations of AI security threats exist, the current landscape is driven more by preventative concerns than actual incidents. We’ve heard rumors of model contamination or poisoning, even though documented research shows potential vulnerabilities (e.g., training image recognition models to misidentify objects). Anecdotal evidence shows that even LLM firewall providers haven’t encountered attacks in recent months. Sure, we hear about , but we’ve yet to hear much about an AI-generated attack in which an organization’s model was contaminated or poisoned. At this time, organizations need to focus on developing balanced, practical security measures rather than overly restrictive protocols. These will start with existing controls and be augmented with new AI-specific ones. As regulations continue to evolve, businesses need to implement new reasonable security measures while maintaining the productivity benefits of AI tools. The challenge lies in finding the balance between protection and practicality. CISOs should be taking essential small steps to protect against any data breach event and any accidental (or malicious) AI-related incidents. The first should be to have a clear, common-sense policy around your data usage, with internal limits for access. Your enterprise should have a policy around an LLM that’s no different than current policies for putting information into the cloud or web today. Continuous training is essential. Create an audit trail of employees’ interactions with a specific LLM. Find out what questions employees ask via LLM prompts and what data they might ingest. Track these efforts internally for further exploration. Choose to adopt a private instance explicitly built for the organization’s needs without compromising data privacy. Your enterprise needs to decide if your employees will access public LLMs or a dedicated, isolated version of an AI model trained solely on an organization’s data. This private instance will help ensure that sensitive information remains confidential and is not shared with other users or the broader AI platform. This customized internal AI system effectively controls the company’s data and model usage. After all these are implemented, CISOs can look at protecting their AI models once they are in place. With bigger use cases to come, that may be the subject of a forthcoming column here. Beyond focusing on the items discussed above, some CISOs foresee futuristic doomsday-type scenarios to be wary of. For example, what if a tech hacker disliked a particular hedge fund manager and launched a coordinated strike against all of the AI models their firm used to trade? That manipulation of financial trading platforms might cause the company and its investors to lose a great deal of money. Or imagine a bad actor that goes after the self-driving algorithms of automobiles, leading to physical harm. While we all hope these are in the realm of negative speculation at best, it’s not unreasonable to fathom that these types of attacks are possible in the future. And before you say that these models wouldn’t be accessible from the outside world, there is always the risk of an insider threat. Rogue employees exist, and you never know what a disgruntled employee on the opposite of the political spectrum could do. We hope we won’t have to contend with these extreme cases of model contamination for a very long time, if ever. However, security executives and their AI Councils must focus on preventing these risks, however small, from materializing.

Some experts say there are cases in which individuals believe they are seeing drones flying in the sky, but they may be something else. “Historically, we’ve experienced many cases of mistaken identity where reported drones are, in fact, manned aircraft or facilities,” a Department of Homeland Security official said on a Dec. 14 White House press call discussing the government’s response to ongoing drone sightings. In November, “multiple suspicious activity reports” were submitted in New Jersey “regarding unidentified and unknown subjects operating multiple unmanned aircraft, otherwise known as UAS,” the official said. “Our military knows where they took off from. If it’s a garage, they can go right into that garage. They know where it came from and where it went and for some reason they don’t want to comment,” President-elect Donald Trump said at a Dec. 16 news conference streamed by ABC News. “Something strange is going on, for some reason they don’t want to tell the people, and they should.” Drone sightings have also been reported in New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia, California and Ohio, according to CNN. On Dec. 13, New York’s Stewart International Airport temporarily closed its runways due to drone activity, according to the news outlet. Airspace over Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio was also restricted on Dec. 15 for several hours because of drones, WHIO reported. “It is not illegal to fly drones in U.S. airspace,” a Federal Aviation Administration official said on the White House press call. “Generally speaking, it is legal to fly a drone in most locations, both during the day and at night, as long as you remain below 400 feet and you keep those drones in sight at all times, avoiding other aircraft and not causing hazard to any people or property, and avoiding restricted airspace.” Still, the reports of drone activity have been heightened after they have been spotted over “residential neighborhoods, restricted sites and critical infrastructure,” according to CNN. Among the allegations against Baldoni are comments about Lively’s weight, including reaching out to her personal trainer, as well as physical touching and sexual remarks without consent. Lively requested that no more “sex scenes, oral sex or on camera climaxing” be added outside of what was already in the script. According to Lively’s complaint, on Jan. 4, 2024, Heath was part of a small meeting of “It Ends With Us” collaborators where Lively alleged that the producer and Baldoni had engaged in “inappropriate conduct” on set. Lively claimed that Heath pressured her to “simulate full nudity” in a birth scene and showed her a video of his wife in labor “fully nude ... with her legs spread apart.” When Lively expressed alarm, she said, Heath replied that his wife “isn’t weird about this stuff.” Heath insisted on taking a meeting with Lively while she was “topless and having body makeup removed,” according to the legal document. Though he agreed to keep his back turned to her, she said, he instead stared directly at her. Steve Sarowitz Sarowitz, the billionaire co-chairman of Wayfarer Studios, is one of the primary financiers of Baldoni’s production company, investing at least $125 million in the venture. He amassed his fortune after taking his payroll firm, Paylocity, public in 2014; he is now worth a reported $2.7 billion. Sarowitz is also a member of the Baha’i community. Lively’s complaint alleges that at the New York premiere of “It Ends With Us” in August, Sarowitz said he was “prepared to spend $100 million to ruin the lives of Ms. Lively and her family.” Further, the document says, Sarowitz “flew in for one of his few set visits” on the day that Lively was filming the birth scene where she only had a “small piece of fabric covering her genitalia.” Jennifer Abel Abel, founder and CEO of RWA Communications, is the publicist for Baldoni and Wayfarer. In July, she founded her own public relations company after serving as a partner at the communications firm Jonesworks. Her client roster is relatively small; Baldoni and actor Jameela Jamil are the most well-known names she represents. Lively’s legal complaint includes dozens of private text messages and emails between Abel, Baldoni and other communications experts that the actor claims show intent to destroy her reputation. According to those messages, Baldoni first expressed concern to Abel in May that Lively’s on-set allegations could go public. That was when Baldoni noticed that Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, had blocked him on social media, the complaint says. “HE BLOCKED YOU?! Is he a 12 year old girl?!” Abel texted Baldoni, per the document. “We can put the plan down on paper ... to make sure we have all of the documentation needed of what happened on set, who witnessed what and who would be our Allies to go on background if needed to shut down her claims.” By then, the complaint alleges that Abel was already in touch with a crisis communications expert, Melissa Nathan, relaying that Baldoni “wants to feel like [Lively] can be buried.” Melissa Nathan Nathan, co-owner and CEO of the Agency Group, was officially brought in by Abel in July to work for Baldoni, according to Lively’s complaint. The document says Nathan quoted the actor a fee of up to $175,000 for three to four months of her work. The Agency Group then created a “scenario planning” document for Wayfarer to be implemented if Lively were to make her “grievances” public. According to this document, which was cited in Lively’s complaint, one idea was to float the narrative that Lively involved Reynolds in the filmmaking to “create an ilmalance [sic] of power between her” and Baldoni. The PR firm also suggested reminding reporters that Lively has a “less than favorable reputation in the industry” and has “issues” working with Leighton Meester, Anna Kendrick and Ben Affleck. A month before starting her work with Wayfarer, Nathan in June announced the launch of her own public relations firm after departing Hiltzik Strategies, the crisis PR firm where she was executive vice president. Nathan’s new company is partially owned by Ithaca Media Ventures, according to corporate registration records filed in California. Ithaca is owned by HYBE America, whose CEO is entrepreneur and former talent manager Scooter Braun. HYBE America is one of the Agency Group’s clients, along with Johnny Depp, Logan Paul and Drake. Jed Wallace According to Lively’s complaint, Wallace is a public relations contractor from Austin, Texas, whom the Agency Group hired to “seed and influence” negative social media discussion about the actor. In an Aug. 9 text message referenced in the complaint, Nathan relays to Abel that Wallace said “we are crushing it on Reddit.” A day later, the alleged messages show, Abel compliments Wallace “and his team’s efforts to shift the narrative” about Baldoni. Scooter Braun Braun, the former manager of Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, now runs the U.S. arm of the South Korean entertainment company HYBE. HYBE America is a co-founder of Nathan’s company, the Agency Group, and one of its clients. Braun has also been engaged in a years-long public dispute with Swift, who is one of Lively’s best friends. The battle between the singer and the executive began in 2019, when Braun acquired the record label Big Machine, which held the rights to the master recordings for Swift’s music from her 2006 self-titled debut to 2017’s “Reputation.” Swift responded by launching the “Taylor’s Version” series of rerecordings and rereleases of those albums. No-fly zones are enforced around airports, military installations, nuclear plants, sports stadiums during games and certain landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty. However, not everybody follows the rules. Sightings at airports shut down flights in a few instances. Reported sightings of what appear to be drones flying over New Jersey at night in recent weeks created anxiety among some residents, in part because it is not clear who is operating them or why. Some state and local officials called for stricter rules to govern drones. Most, but not all, of the drones spotted in New Jersey appeared to be larger than those typically used by hobbyists. Officials said many of the objects seen may have been planes rather than drones. The unmanned aircraft are legal in the state for recreational and commercial use but are subject to local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. Operators must be FAA certified. ho regulates drones? The FAA is responsible for the regulations governing their use, and Congress wrote some requirements into law. With a 2018 law, the Preventing Emerging Threats Act, Congress gave certain agencies in the Homeland Security and Justice departments authority to counter threats from unmanned aircraft to protect the safety of certain facilities. New drones must be outfitted with equipment allowing law enforcement to identify the operator, and Congress gave the agencies the power to detect and take down unmanned aircraft that they consider dangerous. The law spells out where the counter-drone measures can be used, including “national special security events” such as presidential inaugurations and other large gatherings of people. A U.S. senator called for mysterious drones spotted over the sensitive areas in New Jersey and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic region to be “shot down, if necessary.” “We should be doing some very urgent intelligence analysis and take them out of the skies, especially if they’re flying over airports or military bases,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said, as concerns about the drones spread across Capitol Hill. To get a “remote pilot certificate,” you must be at least 16 years old, be proficient in English, pass an aeronautics exam and not suffer from a “mental condition that would interfere with the safe operation of a small unmanned aircraft system.” Yes, but the FAA imposes restrictions on nighttime operations. Most drones are not allowed to fly at night unless they are equipped with anti-collision lights that are visible for at least 3 miles. Over the past decade, pilots reported hundreds of close calls between drones and airplanes, including airline jets. In some cases, airplane pilots had to take evasive action to avoid collisions. Drones buzzing over a runway caused flights to be stopped at London’s Gatwick Airport during the Christmas travel rush in 2018 and again in May 2023. Police dismissed the idea of shooting down the drones, fearing that stray bullets could kill someone. Advances in drone technology made it harder for law enforcement to find rogue drone operators — bigger drones in particular have more range and power. Some state and local officials in New Jersey called for stronger restrictions because of the recent sightings, and that has the drone industry worried. Scott Shtofman, director of government affairs at the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International, said putting more limits on drones could have a “chilling effect” on “a growing economic engine for the United States.” “We would definitely oppose anything that is blindly pushing for new regulation of what are right now legal drone operations,” he said. AirSight, a company that sells software against “drone threats,” says more than 20 states enacted laws against privacy invasion by drones, including Peeping Toms. Will Austin, president of Warren County Community College in New Jersey and founder of its drone program, says it’s up to users to reduce public concern about the machines. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock indexes drifted amid mixed trading Monday, ahead of this week’s upcoming meeting by the Federal Reserve that could set Wall Street’s direction into next year. The S&P 500 rose 0.4%, coming off its first losing week in the last four . The Nasdaq composite climbed 1.2% to a record, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was a laggard and fell 110 points, or 0.3%. Broadcom leaped 11.2% to help lead the S&P 500 for a second straight day after delivering a profit report last week that beat analysts’ expectations. The technology company is riding a wave of enthusiasm about its artificial-intelligence offerings in particular. The market’s main event, though, will arrive on Wednesday when the Federal Reserve will announce its last move on interest rates for the year. The widespread expectation is that it will cut its main rate for a third straight time, as it tries to boost the slowing job market after getting inflation nearly all the way down to its target of 2%. The question is how much more it will cut rates next year, and Fed officials will release projections for where they see the federal funds rate ending 2025, along with other economic indicators, once their meeting concludes. Fed Chair Jerome Powell will also answer questions in a press conference following the meeting. For now, the general expectation among traders is that the Fed may cut a couple more times in 2025, according to data from CME Group. But such expectations have been shrinking following reports suggesting inflation may be tougher to get all the way down to 2% from here. Besides last month’s slight acceleration in inflation, another worry is that President-elect Donald Trump’s preferences for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation down the line. Goldman Sachs economist David Mericle has dropped his earlier forecast of a cut by the Fed in January, for example. Beyond the possibility of tariffs, he said Fed officials may also want to slow their cuts because of uncertainty about exactly how low rates need to go so that they no longer press the brakes on the economy. Expectations for a series of cuts to rates by the Fed have been one of the main reasons the S&P 500 has set an all-time high 57 times so far this year and is heading for one of its best years of the millennium . The economy has held up better than many feared, continuing to grow even after the Fed hiked the federal funds rate to a two-decade high in hopes of grinding down on inflation, which topped 9% two summers ago. On Wall Street, MicroStrategy jumped as much as 7% during the day as it continues to benefit from the surging price for bitcoin , which set another all-time high. But its stock ended the day down by les than 0.1% after bitcoin’s price pulled back below $106,000 after setting a record above $107,700, according to CoinDesk. The software company has been building its hoard of the cryptocurrency, and its stock price has more than sextupled this year. It will also soon join the Nasdaq 100 index. Bitcoin’s price has catapulted from roughly $44,000 at the start of the year, riding a recent wave of enthusiasm that Trump will create a system that’s more favorable to digital currencies . Honeywell rose 3.7% after saying it’s still considering a spin-off or sale of its aerospace business, as part of a review of its overall business. KUWAIT CITY, Dec 29: The Public Prosecution has witnessed a notable increase in its caseload, receiving 20,612 cases in the first half of 2024, marking a 21.1 percent rise compared to the same period last year. The criminal cases topped the chart, comprising 28.6 percent of the total, while drug addiction cases were the least frequent, accounting for just 2.4 percent. The statistics, a copy of which has been received by the Al-Seyassah daily, reveal that the Prosecution dealt with 19,544 cases overall, resolving 18,833. The felony and commercial misdemeanor cases stood out as the most prominent categories, making up 30.8 percent and 30.5 percent, respectively, of cases handled. Banking crimes and drug-related offenses were the largest categories among newly received cases, each contributing approximately 29 percent. Despite the general rise in cases, there were notable declines in specific categories. Drug addiction cases fell by 33.6 percent, environmental misdemeanors by 4.3 percent, and juvenile offenses by 2.1 percent. The commercial misdemeanors saw the most dramatic surge, climbing 101.7 percent. The technology-related offenses followed with a 33.1 percent increase, reflecting the growing complexity of cybercrimes. The felony cases and check misdemeanors also rose by 7.9 percent and 9.2 percent, respectively. On the other hand, murder and assault cases experienced a sharp drop of 51.4 percent, while property crimes decreased by 24.7 percent. The cases involving assaults on honor and reputation fell by 15.6 percent and banking crimes decreased by 7.7 percent. The statistics underscore both challenges and achievements for Kuwait’s judicial system.
