CALIFORNIA 83, SACRAMENTO STATE 77By Aui'a Vaimaila Leatinu'u , PMN For over six years, Pacific families have continued to struggle with overcrowded housing, a reality that the Salvation Army finds unsurprising. According to Census data from Statistics New Zealand, over 100,000 people are estimated to be severely housing deprived, an increase from 99,462 people in 2018 . This figure includes those living without shelter, in temporary accommodation, sharing private dwellings, or uninhabitable housing. Among the severely deprived, 38.5 percent of Pacific people, or about four in 10 individuals, live in overcrowded conditions. Over 28,000 Pacific people in New Zealand are in extremely bad housing conditions. The rate of overcrowding among Pacific homes significantly exceeds the national average of around 12 per cent. However, the overall statistics have remained unchanged in the last six years. The many barriers Pacific families face Ana Ika, a Social Policy Analyst at the Salvation Army, says the data reflects the ongoing housing crisis in New Zealand. She says Pacific families struggle to move into home ownership due to unaffordability, and private rentals pose their own challenges since they are often unsuitable for larger families. "There's not enough big houses and private rentals and if there are big houses, they're often unaffordable for our families. "So there's a myriad of issues there around housing, home ownership for Pacific, income levels, and education that necessarily since 2018 hasn't changed." While some Pacific people are moving into higher-paid roles and managing to purchase homes, this group remains a small percentage compared to the rest of the Pacific community. "So the housing space is really complex. I can't really put my finger on one thing, but affordability of housing and availability of bigger housing can often contribute to why the numbers have stayed the same." She says many Pacific families living in overcrowded conditions are directed towards transitional housing, which Ika describes as "a step between emergency or homelessness towards getting into Kāinga Ora property or social housing". "[Overcrowded homes] not only creates a lot of health challenges or issues in regards to respiratory issues, but it also creates challenging dynamics in regards to the family well-being. "And so the best option, both health-wise, family-wise and financially-wise, is for them to be able to move out." While it is discouraging that the number of overcrowded Pacific homes has stagnated, Ika finds it is encouraging that the situation has not worsened. Ika also said that the definition of overcrowding, often defined as "two people in a room", is important to understand. This norm is common among Pacific families, but it becomes concerning when the number of occupants grows. Over 11,000 children impacted The report shows that children bear the brunt of these overcrowded living conditions, where 38.6 per cent (11,115) of severely housing-deprived Pacific people are under 15 years old. Ika said overcrowding made it difficult for children to find quiet spaces to study, which can lead to poorer educational outcomes and negative long-term outcomes and negative long-term consequences for younger generations. She referenced a study by the Education Review Office's study that looked into Covid-19's impacts on Pacific learners, finding that these students experienced disproportionately negative effects, including large isolation bubbles, access to devices, and job loss. "It was often around the house [being] too noisy - there was no space for them to study," Ika said. "They had to share devices in between so many siblings and so there are repercussions for us living in these homes of lots of people." Severe crowding hits Tongan homes hardest Statistics New Zealand's Principal Analyst, Rosemary Goodyear, said Tongan households experienced the highest rates of overcrowding among Pacific groups, with around 46 per cent living in severely crowded conditions. This is followed by Tokelauan households at nearly 40 per cent and Sāmoan households at 37.3 per cent. "Around a quarter of people with Tongan ethnicity are living in a severely crowded home," Goodyear said. "It's severe crowding that's really kind of more related to the sort of risk of infectious disease. "Generally, we know that from the kind of research that's done on infectious disease, that that's got the worst kind of health outcomes." Otago University research also found that crowded living environments increase the risk of contracting infectious diseases, such as rheumatic fever, which can have lifelong health consequences. Balancing culture and housing market realities Ika said that despite new housing developments, policies and interventions, the fundamental challenge lies in balancing cultural preferences for larger households with a market geared towards smaller, more profitable dwellings. "I think there needs to be a discussion around how we acclimatise to the current housing market and the properties that are available. "Unfortunately, because the majority of us live in Auckland, they're shoebox houses, and they're not fit for how we live as Pacific. "How do we still protect the social connections that we have as a family, but splitting across multiple houses so that we address these health issues, we're not overcrowded so that we can move into homes of our own? FRISCO, Texas -- There's a chance the Dallas Cowboys ' 2024 season might be cursed , but they've unearthed a gem worth holding on to in former undrafted running back Rico Dowdle . Dallas (5-8) went with a running back-by-committee approach in the first 10 weeks of the season, rotating through using Dowdle (83 carries), a late-stage Ezekiel Elliott (54 carries), 2023 sixth-round Deuce Vaughn (seven carries) and a late-stage Dalvin Cook (eight carries). That wasn't working as the Cowboys were averaging 83.7 rushing yards per game, the second fewest in the NFL ahead of only the Las Vegas Raiders (76.9 rushing per game). In Week 11, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy altered his approach and anointed Dowdle as the Cowboys' "lead back." As a result, only 2024 NFL rushing yards leader Saquon Barkley (632 rushing yards since Week 11) has more yards on the ground than Dowdle's 357 since he became the face of the Cowboys ground game in Week 11. His 69 carries are far and away the most on the team in this stretch, followed by fill-in starting quarterback Cooper Rush's 13 and then Elliott's seven. Now, the Cowboys have an above-average ground game, ranking 14th in the NFL in rushing yards per game (108.3) since Week 11 with Dowdle as their go-to-guy in the backfield. The last two weeks -- Week 13 vs. the New York Giants and Week 14 vs. the Cincinnati Bengals -- Dowdle has posted consecutive career highs on the ground with 112 rushing yards on 22 carries against New York and 131 rushing yards on 18 carries against Cincinnati. "We've been able to get the run going for sure," Dowdle said Wednesday. "Those guys up front have been playing their asses off. ... I think the tape speaks for itself, and like I said, the eye in the sky don't lie. I think it's been able to show getting those repeated carries, those repeated run calls is definitely showing on the field, like the rhythm of being able to figure out what the defense is doing. Figure out where you can hit them on the next play, and it's definitely shown [with results]." Dowdle has averaged 19.5 touches per game since Week 11, the 10th most in the NFL, and his 78 total touches in that span are tied for the third most in the league with Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris . In an ideal world, Dallas would like for Dowdle to register a minimum of 20 carries going forward. "You always want to get a guy touches, especially more touches, with that kind of production," McCarthy said Tuesday. ... "My goal is when you got a back that's hot, you want to get him the ball 20 to 25 carries, you're talking about a perfect world here." Beyond simply giving the ball to Dowdle more often, the Cowboys simplifying their run schemes have also paid major dividends. The run game becoming much more of weapon for Dallas since Week 11 also doesn't surprise Dowdle one bit. "Early on in the season, we were behind [in games], so we weren't able to run the ball. We were doing a different approach with it as well, and we made a couple changes," Dowdle said. "We switched our scheme a little bit, sticking to the bread and butter core concepts that everybody was good at. I think that all played a factor into it. It's not surprising at all. We've been able to do it. We weren't able to do it in some games, and then we were up against it in other games." McCarthy agreed with Dowdle's points and also pointed to the offensive line started to get comfortable playing alongside each other in a year where the unit has been beset by injuries to right guard Zack Martin (ankle), left tackle Tyler Guyton (ankle/knee) and center Cooper Beebe (concussion). "Well, I think it's a combination of things, I think first you got to talk about Rico. He's running the football [well]. I think the courses and his run style is, you know, we've always loved his run style," McCarthy said. ... "I think he definitely fit the way we're running the football, particularly the last three games. "I think there's a number of variables but it definitely starts with the runner. And more importantly I think the guys up front are getting it done." A question worth asking about Dowdle and his workload is simple: "Can he handle it?" This is a player who suffered a broken hip in 2021 and is now up to 152 carries in 2024, well past the 96 career carries he had in his first three NFL seasons played combined. He is stretching every day now, and he's made a dietary change: Dowdle stopped eating red meat -- with the exception of going to a nice steakhouse -- and pork in January of this year, switching to chicken and turkey almost exclusively for his source of protein. It's worked: He says his body fat percentage is now down "a lot." "I feel pretty good right now," Dowdle said. "You got your nicks and nacks from the games, but other than that I feel pretty good, honestly. I could go for another 12 games for sure, if they [the NFL] allowed us." Dowdle also prides himself on being a downhill, violent runner, and that style has lent itself to him having one of the most efficient rushing seasons in the entire league in 2024. A successful run is analytically defined by gaining at least 40% of the yards required on first down (4 yards on a first and 10 for example), 60% of the yards required on second down and moving the chains for a first down on either a third- or fourth-down carry. The metric of rushing success rate is the amount of those successful runs divided by the overall number of rushing attempts a player has. Among 25 players who have at least 150 carries this season, Dowdle's 54.6% rushing success rate is the seventh best in the entire league. That's just ahead of Detroit Lions Pro Bowler Jahmyr Gibbs (53.4%) and right behind Philadelphia Eagles NFL rushing yards leader Saquon Barkley (56%). The new chair is expected to appoint new directors of the FTC’s antitrust and consumer protection divisions. “These changes likely will make the FTC more favorable to business than it has been in recent years, though the extent to which is to be determined,” wrote Anthony DiResta, a consumer protection attorney at Holland & Knight, in a recent analysis . Deals that were blocked by the Biden administration could find new life with Trump in command. For example, the new leadership could be more open to a proposed merger between the country’s two biggest supermarket chains, Kroger and Albertsons, which forged a $24.6 billion deal to combine in 2022. Two judges halted the merger Tuesday night. The FTC had filed a lawsuit in federal court earlier this year to block the merger, claiming the deal would eliminate competition, leading to higher prices and lower wages for workers. The two companies say a merger would help them lower prices and compete against bigger rivals like Walmart. One of the judges said the FTC had shown it was likely to prevail in the administrative hearing. Dec 3 (Reuters) - Three separate asset management firms launched exchange-traded funds on Tuesday, unveiling products focused on securitized debt, the artificial intelligence industry and Ozempic-maker Novo Nordisk in the closing weeks of a year that has seen a deluge of new funds. New ETF offerings have exploded in 2024, as investors sought ways to participate in the soaring U.S. stock market. Year-to-date inflows for U.S.-listed ETFs are poised to cross the $1 trillion mark this week for the first time ever. As of late November, a record 612 ETFs had launched, compared to 480 last year, according to State Street Global Advisors. The latest include the BondBloxx Private Credit CLO ETF (PCMM.O) , opens new tab , which will give financial advisors and others access to private CLOs, or collateralized loan obligations, issued by middle-market corporations. CLOs are pools of leveraged loans, structured as one actively managed security. They have become a major source of funding for non-investment grade companies seeking debt financing. More broadly, lending to companies by institutions other than banks, known as private credit, has grown rapidly in recent years as stricter regulations made it more expensive for traditional lenders to finance riskier loans.
