Rico Carty, who won the 1970 NL batting title when he hit a major league-best .366 for the Atlanta Braves, has died. He was 85. Major League Baseball , the players' association and the Braves paid tribute to Carty on social media on Sunday. No further details on Carty's death were provided. “Carty was one of the first groundbreaking Latino stars in the major leagues, and he established himself as a hero to millions in his native Dominican Republic, his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, and the city of Atlanta, where he was a beloved fan favorite,” the players' association said in its statement . The Braves said Carty left an indelible mark on the organization. “While his on-field accomplishments will never be forgotten, his unforgettable smile and generous nature will be sorely missed,” the team said in its statement. Carty made his big league debut with the Braves in September 1963. He batted .330 with 22 homers and 88 RBIs in his first full season in 1964, finishing second to Dick Allen in voting for NL Rookie of the Year. The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta after the 1965 season, and Carty got the franchise's first hit in its new home on April 12, 1966, against Pittsburgh. Carty had his best year in 1970, batting .366 with 25 homers and a career-best 101 RBIs. He started the All-Star Game after he was elected as a write-in candidate, joining Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in the NL outfield. Carty batted .299 with 204 homers and 890 RBIs over 15 years in the majors, also playing for Cleveland, Toronto, Oakland, Texas and the Chicago Cubs. He retired after the 1979 season. Kneller Get it from Amazon for $32.39+ (available in four colors). 2. A no-tools-required dual-showerhead to make tandem showers a romantic experience instead of fighting with your partner because someone is roasty toasty under the showerhead, and the other person is shivering in the back of the tub. Boona is a small business on a mission to make showers more enjoyable, whether you're showering alone or with a partner. Promising review: "This is a high-quality product that’s straightforward to install. The water pressure is incredible! It’s like a brand-new shower. A WD-40 pen (A pen! Genius!) so you can enjoy the squeak-quieting, hinge-lubricating, rust-preventing powers that you know and love from traditional WD-40 but in an easy-to-maneuver precise pen tip. Promising review: "I love WD-40 products and use them for everything. I spray on shovels to keep dirt or snow from sticking, spray around windows and thresholds to deter bugs, clean Sharpies off wood and walls, and, of course, stop squeaky doors. These small direct-point application pens are great. Keep one in the glove box, my kitchen 'junk' drawer, and the house toolbox." — BBP623 Get a three-pack from Amazon for $14.99 . 4. A STUNNING caramel apple bath bomb that'll make you feel like the juiciest apple after a soak in the tub. (There's a joke about bobbing for apples here somewhere...) This non-sticky gloss evens out dark and light spots on your lips using a magical thing called color theory. Pound Cake is a BIPOC-owned small business started by Camille Bell and Johnny Velazquez. Promising review: "I've been married to IBP's lip oil for years! CAKE THEORY changed that for me in less than 24 hours. Slept in it the first night and woke up with the softest, plumpest lips. Super hydrated and moisturized, and not even an ounce of stickiness ! GET IT!" — Devin Get it from Ulta for $22 (available in two shades). 6. A Tub Topper because parents everywhere, bathtime is about to change forever. It attaches with suction cups to the lip of the tub and acts as a splash guard, toy tray, and a fun zone thanks to the flat surface, which allows for play. Promising review: "Like you, when I first came across this, I was hesitant because of the price. It's a bit steep, I thought to myself. But then, after another night of bathtime with two towels on the ground to soak up the water my child had splashed all over, I took the plunge and bought it. And definitely worth it a million times over. My child LOVES the extra space for toys and I love the water staying in the tub. I definitely and highly suggest buying it. You won't be disappointed! Or your child!!" — Brianna Get it from Amazon for $59.95 (available in four colors). 7. A set of sheet holders for the folks who are running marathons in their sleep only to wake in the morning with bedsheets that are pretty much everywhere but on the bed. Not convinced? Even if you sleepwalk and SHOOK your entire mattress, the sheets would still stay put. Promising review: "I have an adjustable base. My issues have always been with the top sheet. They don't stay tucked in, and sheets shift. These didn't catch my eye at first. They looked bulky and cumbersome. All I kept seeing were things I had unsuccessfully used. I gave these a second look and decided to buy them. I've had them on my bed a week now and I'm impressed! NO sheet shifting, and they stay tidy with minimal effort to make the bed. These appear to be sturdy as well. I know they are a little pricey for sheet holders, but these are worth it. " — Joni Get it from Amazon for $59.99 . 8. A magnetic dryer ball holder to make laundry day a fuss-free affair. Instead of rooting around your laundry room looking for one of the dozen dryer balls you swear you own (and which have all inevitably rolled off and behind the dryer), you can easily grab one from this organizer. Plus, if you attach this holder to the side of your machine or a nearby shelf = *chef's kiss* You can also use it to store tennis balls! Promising review: "So one of the reasons I didn’t use dryer balls before is because where do you put them when you’re not using them? How do you dry them in between uses? This answers both. It works great, and I love how the balls roll down to dispense. Everyone wants to play with it when they first see it." — Meghan Get it from Amazon for $19.99 . 9. And a trio of reusable soot sprite dryer balls as cute and helpful as their film counterpart. A pack of carborundum sponges because these are the heavy hitters you'll want for stains and gunk that no other sponge is strong enough to handle. Promising review: "Nice and thin. You'll find so many more uses for these around the house than just getting stuff off the underside of cookware! I had hard, scaly water deposits on the glass surrounding our powder room faucet (one of those fancy, highfalutin modern-looking things). I've tried everything for four years to get this stuff off. One day I thought, maybe i'll try my sponges. Took it all off super easily!!!! Faucet looks like new. My only rec is to spot-test your item first before using it because it will scratch certain surfaces if you scrub too aggressively (for example, it gets the burned-on, weird stuff off of the bottom of my fave Our Place pan, but I rubbed too hard in one spot and it took the color right off lol)." — Hoarder Get an eight-pack from Amazon for $7.99+ (available in two sponge thicknesses). 13. A ceiling fan carbon filter for grabbing dust, pollen, smoke, dander, and other allergens as the fan spins. Hate the idea of applying foundation to a popped pimple but doubly hate how obvious pimple patches are with a full beat? Try this! Promising review: "I’m perimenopausal, so apparently, that means I break out all the time. But this little bit of magic actually does what it says. I cover the red angry areas. Leave it a few minutes to dry, then put some concealer over. Not only do they stay covered, but when I remove my makeup. The spots are soothed and healing up. As I said, magic!✨" — Vanessa H. Get it from Violette_Fr for $28 . 15. A shoe-washing bag so you can turn back the clock on your fave (now very scuffed and muddy) sneakers. Promising review: "I normally do not write reviews but had to for this one... I wore these white sneakers all over Scotland and London for two weeks, so they were far from white upon my return (I wish I had taken a before pic prior to washing them). I ordered this gadget and threw them in the wash not expecting much but willing to give a try prior to replacing them. They’re white again! It is as close to brand new as you could expect, given the wear. I’m both ecstatic and impressed!" — Whitney Get it from Amazon for $36.99 . 16. An outlet extender if your bed, couch, cabinets, etc., can't lie flat against the wall because a pesky cord is in the way. This adapter has three outlets, so you can push your bed flat against the wall and still plug in the charger. Promising review: "I have been looking for a solution that would allow for a nightstand and also a dresser to be pushed up against a wall even with things plugged into the outlet behind that furniture. I FOUND IT. This wall outlet extender does exactly what it says it will do. I have a fan, clock radio, and watch charger plugged into it and can still move the nightstand right up against the wall. The light on the dresser no longer forces the dresser to be out a couple of inches; it, too, can be pushed right up against the wall, and the cord is not in danger of getting crushed and becoming a fire hazard. A game changer! I will be ordering a few more." — Lynda L. Get a two-pack from Amazon for $7.58+ . 18. Dr. Amy Baxter is the creator of Buzzy, and her company, Pain Care Labs, is a woman-owned small business Promising review: "My son has had to have his blood drawn more than we’d like. Usually, it is difficult and a long, drawn-out, tantrum-filled process. Until we got Buzzy! This little bee is amazing. You turn him on and place him right above the injection/draw site, and he keeps his little arms from feeling the prick! The vibrating distracts the nerves so the needle doesn’t hurt. No more screaming, no more tantrums! It’s a must-have for kiddos who need their blood drawn." — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $44.95 (available in a bee or ladybug). 21. It is super warm, so it’s perfect for our winter days in Texas. You really don’t need anything else. The colors are great, and I love this neutral tan. Reminds me of Burberry but without the price tag. The zipper works great, too, as well as the ties to make it complement your body type. Hits at the perfect spot on your waist so you don’t look like a marshmallow." — MEL Get it from Amazon for $36.97 (available in women's sizes XS–XXL and 18 colors). 22. A Windex outdoor glass cleaner if you're tired of sighing in disappointment when you look at your dirty windows but ain't no way, ain't no how you're getting on a ladder to clean those floor-to-ceiling windows. Just attach the bottle of Windex to your hose, spray the solution, and you're done! Promising review: "The windows are noticeably squeaky clean and clear, and no scrubbing is required after only needing about 20 minutes to dry on a sunny day. I also used this to clean two outdoor glass dining tables, which are now ready for lunches and early dinners outside in the summer. Great product, definitely recommend and will be buying again!" — Helen Simmons Get a two-pack from Amazon for $25.96 . 23. An extendable silicone straw because no, I will not apologize for wanting it! Nope! I am lazy . I want to sit where I'm sitting and not have to bring a heavy Stanley water bottle to my mouth when I'm thirsty. Promising review: "Bought for working out because I’d rather use my cup than water bottles, and honestly, I was surprised to see that it works. The straw is longer than expected. The only flaw is the straw is hard to get in if you have ice already in your cup." — lisa Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (available in four colors). 24. Some aligner removal tools to make the surprisingly and unnecessarily difficult task of removing your aligner, well, easy! This tool gently hooks underneath your aligner so you can stop sticking your dirty fingers in your mouth (and grossing out everyone at the table with you). Promising review: "Ok, so I do not use these every time I take out my Invisalign, but I ALWAYS have one of these with me because, while 8 times out of 10, I can pull them out myself, there are those occasions where for whatever reason, I can get my Invisalign out almost all the way but then sometimes my right side gets stuck on the last button, and it gets painful, almost like a tooth being pulled. When that happens, I get this bad boy out, and I am good to go. The size is perfect, as it's easy for me to use despite my long-fingered, large hands, yet it's small enough to fit in my Invisalign case. Also, since there are two, I keep one at home in my bathroom medicine cabinet and the other in the Invisalign case that I carry in my toiletry bag, which, of course, I carry with me all the time since I brush or at the very least use mouthwash every time I eat anything or drink something that isn't clear. I absolutely recommend these if, even on rare occasions, you have trouble removing your Invisalign." — Elizabeth B. A pack of towel clips that'll prevent kids and pets from pulling down the towel. Or, maybe you have neither of those things, yet your hand and kitchen towels always end up on the ground. Promising review: "This clip is amazing. No more towels falling on the floor. It was becoming a routine thing since my cat thinks it's fun to pull the kitchen towels off the oven. Not now, bad kitty! Great product...wish I had bought one sooner!" — Joanna Get a three-pack from Amazon for $12.99 . 27. A Lego night-light if you dream about stepping on Lego bricks in your sleep. We have never seen a happier boy!!!! It has two settings, and they are memory settings. One changes colors and one is a brighter white light. They go off after a period of time and, if bumped, come back on. It is silicone. If it is dropped, no worries. It’ll be perfectly fine!! Will be buying more!" — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $24.99 (available in two colors). 28. Yearender 2024: Check Top Ranked Indian Institutes Across Key Domains As Per NIRF RankingsCalifornians who try to withdraw money but don’t have enough in their bank accounts won’t fall deeper into a financial hole from having to pay a fine, thanks to a new state law. The law covers instances in which banks charge customers when their withdrawals are declined instantaneously, such as at ATMs, because of insufficient funds. It takes effect Jan. 1. Assembly Bill 2017 applies to banks and credit unions that are regulated by the state; Gov. Gavin Newsom signed it in September. The bill was backed by several consumer advocacy groups, including the California Low-Income Consumer Coalition and East Bay Community Law Center, which called penalties for insufficient funds “ junk fees ” and said getting rid of them will protect financially vulnerable consumers. Tim Grayson, the bill’s author, said when he introduced it in May that it would “help prevent fee creep in the banking industry.” Grayson, a Democrat from Concord, is an incoming senator who was in the Assembly through the end of the 2024 legislative session. The Consumer Federation of America, a sponsor of the bill, said common charges for insufficient funds are $30 or more. The California Credit Union League, which at first opposed the bill and said credit unions “do not charge these types of fees,” eventually took a neutral position. But the state Department of Financial Protection & Innovation has found that many credit unions do have income from insufficient-fund charges; a 2022 state law tasked the agency with collecting data from banks and credit unions about their fees. The law by Grayson is similar to a rule by the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau — the federal watchdog agency that’s in President-elect Donald Trump’s crosshairs — that applies to federally chartered banks. In line with the growing nationwide push to eliminate junk fees , Newsom also signed another bill addressing overdraft fees: Senate Bill 1075 will limit credit-union fees for insufficient funds to $14 unless a lower federal limit is set. That becomes law in 2026. And he signed Assembly Bill 2863 , which will make it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions and requires companies to get consent from their customers before charging them to renew or when a free trial ends. It goes into effect July 1.Speakers at an event yesterday criticised the exclusion of indigenous communities from reform commissions and demanded a dedicated minority commission to address concerns specific to those communities. They also called for constitutional recognition of the indigenous communities to ensure the rights they are entitled to as citizens of the country. They made the statements at a discussion titled "The Condition of Indigenous People in Bangladesh and the Way Forward," organised at The Daily Star Centre in Dhaka by the Kapaeeng Foundation, a human rights organisation. Addressing the event, Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh, demanded the abolishment of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) ministry and suggested it be replaced with a diversity commission. He said the ministry had failed in its duty toward indigenous people. "The Chittagong Hill Tracts Ministry, established under the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord, has completely failed to protect the rights of indigenous people. It should be abolished... The ministry has become development-centric, subjecting indigenous people to majority rule." He further criticised the ministry for focusing on infrastructure projects that erode indigenous heritage and culture rather than prioritising the rights of local communities. Iftekharuzzaman, who also serves as the head of the Anti-Corruption Reform Commission, emphasised the importance of constitutional recognition for members of the indigenous communities. "Some argue that constitutional recognition alone won't solve all problems, but they fail to explain why it would be problematic. Recognition is undeniably a right, given their heritage and culture." He added that the rights of indigenous people would never be upheld unless all citizens viewed their struggles as a collective national concern. Regarding the implementation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord, he said, "No force, not even the prime minister, could implement the Peace Accord alone. The only entity capable of doing so is the Bangladesh Army. Just as they have been recognised globally for establishing peace, I hope they will play a similar role in the hills. We know that if you [the army] want, you can do it." Sarwar Tusher, a member of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, said the country's constitution is not race-neutral. "What is needed is a constitution that is both non-communal and race-neutral." He expressed concerns over the potential travesty in reform commissions, citing the example of the interim government appointing former bureaucrats as the chief election commission and commissioners under the existing laws. "These bureaucrats were complicit in the misrule under the previous regime and have never apologised for supporting authoritarian governance." Tusher also criticised Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus for suggesting that reforms would not occur without the consensus of political parties. "Dr Yunus, you must remember that political parties did not lead the uprising; it was the students and the masses who brought about change." He called for the establishment of two additional commissions -- an education commission and a minority commission -- and urged citizens to move beyond the narrative that only the Awami League is the defender of minority rights. Jahangirnagar University teacher Snigdha Rizwana pointed out that indigenous communities were excluded from all commissions due to the unchanged mindset of the ruling authorities. "The indigenous communities have not been represented because the rulers' mindset has not evolved. Despite their unique culture, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs has not taken any steps to preserve it [indigenous culture]. In some cases, instead of protecting their rights, the state has taken their lands in the name of development." She argued that the state is reluctant to recognise indigenous communities because such recognition would necessitate granting them special rights. Prothom Alo Joint Editor Sohrab Hossain also stressed the importance of constitutional recognition for indigenous people. "Without it, the crisis will intensify," he warned. Shamsul Huda, executive director of the Association for Land Reform and Development, called for the establishment of additional commissions on Land Reform and Agriculture, alongside the education and minority commissions. Nai U Prue Marma, a member of the Rangamati Parbatya Zila Parishad, demanded the implementation of the CHT Peace Accord and the inclusion of the 1900 Regulations in the constitution's schedule. Prodip Kumar Mahottam, an additional secretary of the CHT Ministry, highlighted the state's efforts to improve the conditions of indigenous communities. The event also featured a visual presentation on the overall situation of indigenous people by Pallab Chakma, executive director of the Kapaeeng Foundation. Ajoy A Mree presided over the session. Among others, ILO official Amexius Chicham, Bangladesh Adivasi Parishad leader Philemon Baske, and indigenous leader Flora Bably Talang, also spoke at the event.
The New York Yankees roster will look very different in 2025. They lost Juan Soto to the New York Mets and have brought in many new pieces. They could also be moving on from one of their All-Star infielders. YES Network's Jack Curry noted that he doesn't expect Gleyber Torres to be back with the team in 2025. Torres is currently a free agent and has been with the Yankees his entire big league career. "There’s been some rumors about Gleyber Torres, I don’t expect Gleyber Torres returning," Curry said during an episode of Yankees Hot Stove. The Yankees have added Paul Goldschmidt to play first base, but that may not be the only infield change. They are involved in the third base market. The addition of a third baseman would move Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base. Their search for a third baseman does not bode well for Torres' chances. Torres had a subpar season in 2024. He had 15 home runs. He had just a .257 batting average. However, he can still be valuable for a different team as he still posted an OPS+ over 100. He has 138 career home runs and would be a cheap addition. Torres started his career off with consecutive All-Star selections. Spotrac projects Torres to sign a three-year, $20 million deal in free agency. Torres has played 88 games for the Yankees since his debut in 2018. Now that they are not responsible for paying Soto, the Yankees have money to spend. They've already upgraded their starting rotation, bullpen, infield, and outfield. They could really put a stamp on the offseason by moving Chisholm to second base and replacing Torres. More MLB: $260 million All-Star hints at Yankees trade on social mediaThat Maharashtra’s politics was headed for a structural break became clear on October 25, 2019, when the undivided Shiv Sena stalled the then National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) government formation despite the alliance winning a clear majority (161 out of 288 ACs) in the assembly elections. When the Shiv Sena decided to join hands with its ideological and political rivals, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), to form a government in Maharashtra on November 28, 2019, a political realignment of fortunes became preordained. The only question was whether the combined strength of the Congress and the two regional parties would destroy the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state? Also Read | Maharashtra polls: Independents finish second in 19 constituencies It has taken five years for that question to be answered –– that local body polls were not conducted in the interim kept it in abeyance – but it seems to have become clear now. The BJP has turned the tables and now it looks like the Congress is left without any worthy allies in the state with the BJP-aligned factions of the Shiv Sena and the NCP registering big victories in the elections. The BJP-led NDA, which is now called Mahayuti, has returned with a much bigger (235 out of 288) majority in Maharashtra now. And the BJP itself would appear to be stronger than before. The political and geographical mechanics of this tectonic shift are worth looking at in detail. Let us look at the geographical change first In the 2019 assembly elections, the Congress and the BJP won a total of 149 ACs (BJP 105 and Congress 44) in Maharashtra. The BJP has won 98 of the 105 ACs it won in 2019 once again this time. Of the seven it did not win in 2024 but won in 2019, it did not contest one and gave it to its allies to fight. The remaining six have been won by the Congress or its allies. If one were to compare an NDA (BJP+Shiv Sena) to NDA (BJP+Shiv Sena+NCP) comparison between the 2019 and 2024 assembly elections, the alliance has retained a massive 87% of the 161 ACs it won in 2019 and gained another 95 ACs. NDA lost just 20 of the ACs it won in 2019 in these elections. There are 35 ACs which have been won by the Mahayuti in the 2024 elections which were never won by the BJP or any of its allies since 2009. This includes ACs won by the Shiv Sena in 2014 when Congress, BJP, NCP and Shiv Sena contested separately. A pre-2009 comparison is not possible because of a change in AC boundaries in the 2008 delimitation. Things are on the other extreme for the Congress-led Maharashtra Vikas Agadi (MVA). Of the 98 ACs the Congress-NCP alliance won in 2019, it has retained just 24 and lost 71 of them to the Mahayuti. To be sure, the MVA has won 26 ACs that the Congress-NCP alliance did not win in 2019. A large number of them (17) are because of the Shiv Sena (UBT). However, the number is insignificant in the larger scheme of things. The new assembly might not even have a leader of opposition. What explains this change in Maharashtra’s political map? This is where it becomes interesting. The political contest in Maharashtra in these elections was an eclectic mix of ideology and a battle for political inheritance. The first was in the contest between the BJP and the Congress-led alliances and two factions of the Shiv Sena and NCP. The second was within the Shiv Sena and the NCP in terms of claiming the legacy of the undivided parties. Voters seem to have decided both clearly. Also Read | ‘Everyone knows who is NCP founder’: Sharad Pawar on nephew Ajit after Maharashtra election results There were 73 head-to-head contests between the Congress-BJP in these elections. the BJP has won 86.3% of these, a big improvement from its 68.4% strike rate in similar contests in the 2019 assembly elections. The BJP has also done extremely well in contests against non-Congress MVA components with a strike rate of 87.2%. Congress’s strike rate against non-BJP Mahayuti is just 18.5%, only marginally higher than its performance against the BJP. Chart 1: The Shiv Sena (UBT) and Shiv Sena fought 53 head-to-head contests. Shiv Sena has won 69.9% of these contests. Almost a similar outcome can be seen in the contests between the NCP (Sharad Pawar) or NCP(SP) and the NCP, with the latter winning 70.7% of the 41 head-to-head contests. Chart 2: There is also another way to look at the political realignment in Maharashtra. The MLA count of the BJP and the combined count of the Shiv Sena and NCP has increased or almost remained the same in 2024 compared to 2019. The Shiv Sena had 56 MLAs in 2019 and the Shiv Sena and Shiv Sena (UBT) have won 57 and 20 MLAs in these elections. The NCP had 54 MLAs in 2019 and the NCP and NCP (SP) factions have won 41 and 10 ACs in these elections. The only party which has seen its MLA count fall drastically is the Congress which will have to contend with just 16 MLAs compared to 44 in 2019. The Shiv Sena and the NCP might have seen palace coups in the period between 2019 and 2024, but it is the Congress in Maharashtra that is facing a battle for survival now.The SET index ended lower in November after hitting the year's high of 1,506 points the month before. In the second week of November, the index broke below the 1,470 support level and drifted sideways down below 1,440 and 1,430 points. The moving average convergence/divergence technical indicator also crossed below the zero line, confirming the bearish outlook. Among the factors affecting sentiment: US monetary policy: The upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Dec 17 and 18 is expected to result in another 25-basis-point interest rate cut. However, the US economic recovery trend, including GDP growth of 2.8% and declining unemployment, coupled with potential inflationary pressures from Trump administration policies, could influence the Fed's decision. Domestic economic recovery: Thailand's third-quarter GDP growth exceeded expectations at 3.0%, driven by government stimulus measures such as debt relief and cash handouts. Reduced political tension has also provided the government with greater flexibility to carry out economic policies. Chinese economy: Chinese equities have shown some signs of recovery, fuelled by speculation about the outcome of significant economic discussions in December. Additional stimulus measures are anticipated to lift economic growth, particularly after the disappointment that followed previous announcements. However, a threat by US President-elect Donald Trump to impose 10% tariffs on all Chinese imports could negatively impact exports. Geopolitical risks: Despite a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, ongoing regional tensions in the Middle East, coupled with the unresolved Russia-Ukraine war, continue to pose significant geopolitical risks that could lead to increased market volatility and pressure on oil prices. DECEMBER OUTLOOK The SET index is likely to continue its downward trend. Support levels are seen at 1,400 and 1,380 points, also coinciding with the 200-day simple moving average. Resistance levels are at 1,450 and 1,470 points. In terms of investment strategy, the SET index is likely to remain volatile. Given this uncertainty, a short-term trading strategy can be effective. This approach focuses on stocks with strong growth potential and high dividend yields, particularly when the index is near support levels or shows signs of an uptrend. Our stock picks for December are: AAV (Buy, target 3.60 baht): Our valuation for the parent of the budget carrier Thai AirAsia is based on a 2025 estimated core price/earnings (PE) ratio of 15.5 times, positioned at 1 standard deviation (SD) below the pre-Covid average during profitable years. AAV is expected to outperform the SET index in the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, driven by robust growth projections. CENTEL (Buy, target 44 baht): CENTEL is projected to lead the hotel sector in terms of earnings growth in 2025, with a forecast net profit of 1.7 billion baht, representing an 18% year-on-year increase. This growth will be driven by the absence of significant expenses incurred in 2024 and the full-year contribution of two renovated hotels in Phuket and Pattaya, which are expected to resume normal operations between late November and early December 2024. Our valuation is derived from a discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis, using a 7.6% weighted average cost of capital (WACC) and a 2.5% terminal growth rate. CRC (Buy, target 45 baht): Our valuation for Central Retail Corp is based on a 2025 PE of 27.5 times, positioned at 0.5 SD below the three-year historical average. While the current PE of 20 times estimated 2025 earnings offers a significant discount, we project strong growth prospects in 2024-25. MAGURO (Buy, target 22.50 baht): Our positive outlook on the restaurant operator is driven by the strong growth potential in the Thai full-service restaurant sector and its relatively low penetration rate compared with competitors. The stock's valuation remains attractive, particularly given its robust earnings growth outlook for 2024–25, with profits expected to reach record highs. SISB (Buy, target 40 baht): The international school operator is expected to deliver impressive growth in 2024, with a projected net profit of 914 million baht, reflecting a 35% year-on-year increase. Key growth drivers include increased enrolments, approaching the 4,600-student target (up 10% year-on-year), and a 5% tuition fee increase. Our target price is based on a DCF analysis with a 7.2% WACC and a 3% terminal growth rate. SPRC (Buy, target 8.50 baht): The oil refiner is projected to report a net profit of 2.5 billion baht in 2024, a significant recovery from the loss of 1.2 billion in 2023. This turnaround is driven by improved gross refining margins, supported by favourable crack spread dynamics and operational efficiencies, as well as higher crude throughput, reflecting increased volumes of crude oil processed compared with the prior year. Our target price is based on a 2025 price to book value of 0.88 times, which is 1.8 SD below the five-year historical average. The current stock price offers a dividend yield of 3.7% for the next two years. TOG (Buy, target 12 baht): Our valuation for the optical lens maker is based on a 2025 PE of 12 times, which is 1 SD below the five-year historical average. Key catalysts include the depreciation of the baht, the expansion of Rx lens production capacity, and the progress of the new factory investment plan scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

When Daniel Robinson, a 24-year-old Black man, went missing in Arizona in June 2021, his father, David Robinson, spent months pleading for police to be more aggressive in their search. Related video above: Parents of Brian Laundrie and Gabby Petito reached a legal settlement last year Frustrated with the lack of progress, Robinson temporarily moved to Arizona, hired an independent investigator and assembled a volunteer search team to look for Daniel. Despite local media reporting Daniel's disappearance as early as July 9, 2021, Robinson also felt the case did not receive the necessary media coverage. At the time, America's attention was captured by the disappearance and death of Gabby Petito , a 22-year-old White woman. "You wish you lived in a world where everything was equal, but it's really not equal," Robinson told CNN then. More than three years later, Robinson is still desperately looking for Daniel. He plans to travel to Arizona next spring and assemble a team of volunteers to search new areas and follow up on leads. And he has found a new ally in his efforts — Joseph Petito, Gabby's father. While searching for Gabby, Petito said he was being tagged in social media posts about the term "Missing White Woman Syndrome," which prompted him to look it up. The term, coined by the late TV news anchor Gwen Ifill, is defined by researchers as the heavier spotlight White women and girls receive when they go missing compared to anyone outside of those demographics. While cases of missing White women receive more focus, people of color are disappearing at disproportionate rates. According to 2022 FBI data, Black people make up 31% of missing person reports but only 13% of the US population. In contrast, White people account for 54% of missing person reports and 75% of the US population. "I did a deep dive into it," Petito told CNN. "I looked at popular missing persons cases and the ones that hit the mainstream all looked the same." Petito is on a mission to change that. He has spent the last three years advocating for missing Black and brown people through the Gabby Petito Foundation , a nonprofit that strives to raise awareness of missing people and prevent domestic violence. The foundation partners with families of missing Black and brown people, as well as groups dedicated to raising awareness of these cases, such as the Black & Missing Foundation . Petito has become a strong advocate in the search for Daniel, Robinson said. The fathers communicate regularly and have spoken at Crimecon — a gathering of true crime experts and fans — sharing their stories. Petito has also attended virtual events held in honor of Daniel. "What Mr. Petito has done for my family, it means a lot to me," Robinson said. "Because he had a tragedy and it's amazing when a person can take a tragedy and make something big out of it, become an advocate and help people." Petito is currently working on a television series called "Faces of the Missing," which will highlight dozens of unsolved missing persons cases he says have received little media coverage. "We are going to do all demographics," Petito said. "But we want to keep it consistent with the way people are represented from a proportionate perspective." "There's a lot of work that can be done and a lot of families that can be helped regardless of their color," he added. Petito also wants the series to combat the police classification of "runaway" for people who are reported missing, he said. Black families and advocates have previously told CNN authorities often suggest their missing loved ones ran away from home. "Unless you speak to the person specifically, they cannot be labeled a runaway," Petito said. "Any label other than 'missing' is wrong." Derrica Wilson , co-founder of Black & Missing, said she applauds Petito for using his platform to advocate for more media attention on missing people of color. Petito's foundation, she said, has become an ally of Black & Missing. Wilson and Petito have spoken on panels and podcasts together. In 2023, Wilson said the Gabby Petito Foundation donated $15,000 to her organization. Wilson said joining forces with other foundations only helps increase the chances of all families reuniting with their missing loved ones. "We've always said that missing persons isn't a Black issue, it's not a White issue, it's a human rights issue," Wilson said. "Regardless of race, gender and ZIP code everyone who is missing matters."Google Gemini — everything you need to know

President-elect Donald Trump said on Tuesday he will direct the Department of Justice to “vigorously pursue the death penalty” after President Joe Biden on Monday commuted the death sentences of 37 federal inmates to life in prison. “As soon as I am inaugurated, I will direct the Justice Department to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters. We will be a Nation of Law and Order again!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, echoing his long-standing advocacy for use of the death penalty , which was part of his tough-on-crime rhetoric during the 2024 campaign. After Biden’s commutation of most federal death row inmates – which Trump on Truth Social said “makes no sense” – there will be just three individuals in federal prison facing the death penalty when the president-elect takes office in January. Those three remaining cases are all individuals who committed mass shootings or terrorist attacks: Robert Bowers, who killed 11 people at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue in 2018; Dylann Roof, a White nationalist who murdered nine people at a historically Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015; and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of two brothers responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Biden’s clemency decisions cannot be reversed when Trump takes office, but the president-elect’s Justice Department could resume seeking the death penalty in future cases. Throughout his campaign, Trump’s advocacy for greater use of the death penalty was part of his hardline commitment to reducing violent crime and drug and human trafficking. In his speech launching his 2024 presidential campaign, he pledged to seek the death penalty for drug dealers. He said last year he would ask Congress to pass a law that “anyone caught trafficking children across our border” should receive the death penalty. During the final weeks of the 2024 campaign, Trump repeatedly vowed to push for the death penalty for any migrant who kills a US citizen or a law enforcement officer. There were mixed reactions to Biden’s commutations on Monday. While some families of those whose sentences were commuted expressed relief, some families of the victims were angry. The widow of Bryan Hurst, an Ohio police officer killed in 2005 by Daryl Lawrence, whose sentence was commuted on Monday, said in a statement provided to CNN affiliate WBNS that her family is disappointed by Biden’s decision. Lawrence “made a decision to choose violence. He knew the potential consequences and chose to murder regardless,” Marissa Gibson said in her statement. “All I can hope is that his nearly 20 years in prison has made him a changed man.” Executions by the US government were uncommon prior to Trump’s first term. Only three federal executions had occurred since 1988 before Trump’s then-Attorney General William Barr announced in 2019 the federal government would resume executions. In 2020, the final year of Trump’s first term, the federal government executed 10 individuals , the most executions by the federal government since 1896 and more than all 50 states combined that year. Outside of the federal system, there are over 2,000 people in the United States who were convicted in state courts and put on death row, according to the Death Penalty Information Center . Biden has no power to stop those death sentences.Holiday gift ideas for the movie lover, from bios and books to a status tote
