CLEVELAND (AP) — Alyssa Nakken, the first woman to coach in a Major League Baseball game, is leaving the San Francisco Giants to join the Cleveland Guardians. Nakken made history in 2022 when she took over as first-base coach following an ejection. A former college softball star at Sacramento State, Nakken joined the Giants in 2014 and was promoted to a spot on manager Gabe Kapler's staff in 2020, becoming the majors' first full-time female coach. Nakken has been hired as an assistant director within player development for the Guardians, who won the AL Central last season under first-year manager Stephen Vogt — the AL Manager of the Year. With Cleveland, the 34-year-old Nakken will work with former Giants coaches Craig Albernaz and Kai Correa. Her exact duties are still being determined. "We thank Alyssa Nakken for her incredible contributions to the San Francisco Giants and for trailblazing a path for women in sports,” the Giants said in a statement on Friday. "Her leadership, dedication, and passion for the game have inspired countless individuals, and her impact has been truly transformative for the Giants organization and the baseball community. “As she embarks on this exciting new chapter in her career, we have no doubt that she’ll continue to inspire and achieve great things. We wish her and her family nothing but the best.” Nakken is the second on-field female coach hired by the Guardians. In 2023, the club brought in Amanda Kamekona as their hitting development coach for their year-round training academy in Goodyear, Arizona. Last season, she was an assistant hitting coach at Double-A Akron. Kamekona was twice a third-team All-American at UCLA after transferring from Cal State Fullerton. AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — UCLA alums Jake Knapp and Patty Tavatanakit birdied the entire front nine in a scramble format Friday and finished eagle-birdie for a 14-under 58, giving them a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Grant Thornton Invitational. The tournament has 16 two-player teams from the PGA Tour and the LPGA, the second year of the mixed-team format. The Canadian duo of Brooke Henderson and Corey Conners had two late eagles and narrowly missed a birdie on the 18th hole of Tiburon Golf Club. They had to settle for a 59, tied with Akshay Bhatia and Jennifer Kupcho. Knapp and Tavatanakit have a natural connection having played for the UCLA Bruins a few years apart. Their team name is “Rocco” — Knapp briefly worked as a bouncer before joining the PGA Tour and Rocco’s Tavern is a popular spot in Westwood for UCLA students. “Really chill,” Tavatanakit said in describing the day. “I feel like everything was going the way we hoped for. The timing, momentum-building moments were pretty good. We just kept on playing.” They cooled slightly after opening with nine birdies. Knapp hit a towering shot into about 5 feet on the par-5 17th to set up eagle, and Tavatanakit poured in a birdie putt from about 15 feet on the 18th for the lead. Tavatanakit won her first major as a rookie, the ANA Inspiration. Maja Stark and J.T. Poston had a 61 and were joined by Sahith Theegala and Allisen Corpuz. Defending champions Lydia Ko and Jason Day were at 62 with Jeeno Thitikul and Tom Kim. Ko and Day were slowed by a bogey on the third hole, rare for the scramble format. Thitikul last month won the CME Group Tour Championship at Tiburon and the $4 million prize, the richest in women’s golf. The format changes to foursomes on Saturday, the toughest of the formats because one golf ball is in play and the teammates alternate hitting shots. ___ AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golfA Minnesota college professor is fending off flak from a congressman after a private, “facetious” post by the professor was made public. Rep. Brad Finstad this week accused Kevin Parsneau, political science professor at Minnesota State, Mankato, of “advocating in support of the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.” Finstad, whose district contains Mankato, called for the university’s leadership to demand Parsneau’s resignation, in a letter dated Tuesday and posted on Facebook . “It is acutely unacceptable that this professor is provided a platform to be in the presence of students or involved in academia in any form,” Finstad said in a letter he posted to Facebook. Finstad’s office did not respond to a request for comment as of Friday afternoon. Parsneau on Friday said his comments were not meant to be serious; they were posted in a private group and taken out of context by people he called “cancel culture advocates” — but from the right. He said he commented on a friend’s Facebook post after a masked gunman, whom police now believe to be Luigi Mangione , shot Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in New York on Dec. 4. A post by a friend of Parsneau’s said, “How long do we really need to look for Brian Thompson’s killer? Is today good enough? Or do they need to look tomorrow?” Parsneau replied, “It’s going to be disappointing if he’s a one-off killer instead of a serial killer.” He said in a phone call Friday afternoon that he was not being serious. “It was a private chatroom with a relatively limited group of people, that contained primarily facetious, sarcastic, dark humor,” Parsneau said. “What I said was not meant as anything serious, and somebody went out of their way and targeted me, and that got forwarded to Rep. Finstad, who I believe understands facetiousness.” He acknowledged his comment was an “insensitive statement,” and said he was not advocating for anyone’s assassination or curtailing the investigation into Thompson’s killing, he added in a Facebook message. “It was meant to be about the larger social media reaction to the crime, which I believe reflects public frustration with the health insurance industry and the countless tragic stories of denied health care,” Parsneau said. “Rep. Finstad should spend his time addressing that crisis instead of being a cancel culture activist.” Parsneau said on Friday he has not been asked to resign. A university spokesman confirmed he has tenure. Edward Inch, Minnesota State Mankato’s president, said in a statement Thursday afternoon that Parsneau’s comment was made on a personal Facebook account and not endorsed by the university. “I want to make it clear that I denounce all messages that condone violence of any kind,” Inch said. He said the university plans to host campus conversations in the spring on speech, limits and responsibilities.

No-grow zone LABOUR cannot shirk the blame for our dismal economic figures. In the first half of 2024, under Rishi Sunak , UK growth led the G7 . Under the new “growth-focused” Government, we have shrunk for two straight months. On taking power Labour chose not to talk Britain’s prospects up but to trash the Tories, exaggerate our problems and conjure up a “£22billion black hole”. How did they imagine investors would react to a Government saying the country was on its knees? They fled. And our firms froze with fear about the Budget. ALEX BRUMMER: Bank must head off a recession
The Philadelphia Eagles (11-2) are very healthy heading into Sunday's Week 15 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3). The only player ruled out for this game for the Birds is wide receiver and punt returner Britain Covey (neck), whose duties will be covered just fine by the Eagles' endless weapons in the passing game and Cooper DeJean on the return. The same can't be said for Pittsburgh, who has ruled out three of their key starters: wide receiver George Pickens (hamstring), safety DeShon Elliott (hamstring), and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi (groin). Pickens is Russell Wilson's go-to target as the team's leading receiver, so his absence is a huge loss for Pittsburgh and one less worry for the Eagles. Friday’s Injury Report #PITvsPHI pic.twitter.com/CFwnt0wBI3 Eagles Week 15 Injury Report Observations Quarterback Jalen Hurts injured his finger in Week 14's win over the Carolina Panthers . He has practiced all week. Right tackle Lane Johnson returned to practice after missing Wednesday due to a personal reason. Wide receiver Johnny Wilson (illness) practiced all week except for Friday. He did not receive a game designation, which means he should be good to go by then. Safety Reed Blankenship suffered a concussion in the Eagles' Week 13 win over the Baltimore Ravens and has cleared protocol. Safety Sydney Brown has been dealing with a lingering knee injury all season long and did not play in Week 14. It looks like he will be available for Sunday. Cornerback Darius Slay has also been on and off the injury report this season with a lingering knee issue so it's good he took a rest day to kick off the week. Wide receiver Britain Covey was back at practice after missing last week's game with the same injury. He's not quite ready to go, but Cooper DeJean can fill his shoes. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter has played through the same shoulder injury throughout the season. The Eagles are extremely healthy as they enter a must-win game against the Steelers at home.
