[PCS] President William Ruto yesterday pledged to broaden his government by reaching out to more opposition leaders next year. The President made this statement while cautioning against reckless negativity. Speaking at Koiwa AIC Church in Konoin Sub-county on Sunday during a church service, President Ruto emphasised his commitment to continue reaching out to all Kenyans in the spirit of national unity. He said political competition and rivalry should never be allowed to block national interests. “I will continue to reach out to Kenyans of all walks of life, regardless of their ideological persuasion, to maximise the cross-pollination of the flower of our Republic and guarantee robust seeds for future seasons,” Ruto said. READ: Why broad-based government offers a promise of unity “We must promote inclusion and broaden our platform for collective engagement to allow the articulation of diverse viewpoints and the expression of fresh, new, and bold approaches,” he added. “We must remember that, whatever else sets us apart, we are united by a desire to achieve the best for Kenya and its people.” He noted that although there had been a tussle between the government and the opposition at the beginning of the year, the year ends with them united under a broad-based government. Ruto emphasised that every Kenyan has a role to play in ensuring the country moves forward, and there is no time for blame or finger-pointing. “We do not have the luxury of blame game or pointing fingers. We should all secure the future of our children. It is our responsibility,” he stated. At the same time, the President called for concerted efforts to nurture the youth as they navigate through turbulent times. Stay informed. Subscribe to our newsletter He said parents, religious leaders, and politicians have a role to play in securing a meaningful future for the youth. “The youth need mentorship and guidance as they chart their future,” he added. “We should care about the next generation. We should educate them, provide mentorship, and guide them. We must not let them fall into traps, such as drugs and femicide.” Despite the many challenges, the President noted that significant progress had been made. While things began slowly, many development projects are now ongoing. He highlighted that at least 200 markets and 140,000 houses under the affordable housing programme were under construction. He also pointed out that the government’s programme to ensure food security had borne fruit, with no maize imports required this year, as local farmers had produced enough. Earnings from tea sales, he said, had increased from Sh180 billion in 2023 to Sh210 billion in 2024. “We have seen God’s hand and blessing this year, and that is why, on this last Sunday of 2024, we want to be grateful to God for what He has done for us as a nation,” he said. ALSO READ: Broad-based government litmus test for Ruto and Raila Ruto also noted that the government had launched the universal health coverage programme under Taifa Care, which now covers everyone, including children. He urged parents to register their children as schools re-open. He said those who had cast doubt on the SHA programme would soon realise the government was serious. He announced that the government had procured fertiliser under the subsidised programme. At least 1.5 million bags of fertiliser were already in government stores, with another seven million bags expected by February 2025. The President authorised the construction of a 500-bed capacity dormitory at Konoin Technical Training Institute. He said additional workshops would also be built at a cost of Sh30 billion, urging MPs to approve his proposal once it is tabled in Parliament. Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei pledged to support the President in the fight against corruption. Kericho Governor Erick Mutai and several legislators attended the service.

OTTAWA — Canada got back in the win column at the world junior hockey championship. It wasn't pretty. Oliver Bonk, Caden Price and Mathieu Cataford, into the empty net, scored as the wobbly host country picked up an unconvincing 3-0 victory over Germany on Sunday. Carter George made 25 saves to register the goaltender's second straight shutout for the Canadians, who were coming off Friday's stunning 3-2 upset loss to Latvia in a shootout. Nico Pertuch stopped 33 shots for Germany, which dropped its Group A opener at the men's under-20 tournament to the United States 10-4 before falling 3-1 to Finland. Canada entered with a 17-0 record all-time and a combined 107-26 score against Germany at the world juniors, including last year's 6-3 victory in Gothenburg, Sweden, and an 11-2 drubbing at the 2023 event in Halifax. Despite another sub-par performance, the victory sets up a New Year's Eve matchup against the U.S. for first place in the pool after the Americans fell 4-3 to the Finns in overtime earlier Sunday. Canada suffered one of the powerhouse nation's worst defeats in tournament history Friday when Latvia — outscored 41-4 in four previous meetings at the event — shocked the hockey world. And while the plucky Latvians were full marks for their victory, the Canadians were largely disjointed and surrendered the middle of the ice for long stretches despite firing 57 shots on goal. There was more of the same Sunday. Head coach Dave Cameron made a couple of changes to Canada's lineup — one out of necessity and another for tactical reasons. With star defenceman Matthew Schaefer, who could go No. 1 at the 2025 NHL draft, out of the world juniors after suffering an upper-body injury against Latvia, Vancouver Canucks prospect Sawyer Mynio drew in. Cameron also sat forward Porter Martone in favour of Carson Rehkopf. Canada opened the scoring on the power play, which also had a new look after going 1-for-7 through the first two games, when Bonk scored from his normal bumper position in the slot off an Easton Cowan feed at 9:40 of the first period. Sam Dickinson then chimed a one-timer off the post on another man advantage before George, who was in goal for Canada's 4-0 opener against the Finns, made a couple of stops on the penalty kill inside a red-clad Canadian Tire Centre. Petruch made a big stop off Tanner Howe in the second before also denying Calum Ritchie from the slot on a power play, but the Canadians again looked completely out of sorts against what was a decidedly inferior opponent on paper. Berkly Catton hit another post for Canada early in the third. Tanner Molendyk also found iron. Unable to register a 5-on-5 goal against either Latvia or Germany through more than 120 minutes of action, Price scored on a shot that caromed off the end boards and went in off Pertuch with 4:58 left in regulation to make it 2-0 before Cataford iced it into the empty net on another nervy night for the 20-time gold medallists. LATVIAN REACTION The U.S. beat Latvia 5-1 on Saturday, less than 24 hours after the Europeans' upset of Canada. American captain Ryan Leonard said the Latvians were impressive — even on short rest. "That team's no joke," said the Washington Capitals prospect. "You can't really treat anyone different, especially in this short of a tournament." UP NEXT Germany will meet Latvia on Monday in a crucial game at the bottom of the Group A standings. Canada now turns its attention to Tuesday's clash against the U.S. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 29, 2024. Joshua Clipperton, The Canadian Press
Donald Trump is returning to the world stage. So is his trollingTwo Oregon men were found dead in a Washington state forest after they failed to return from a trip to look for Sasquatch, authorities said Saturday. The 59-year-old and 37-year-old appear to have died from exposure, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said via Facebook. The weather and the men’s lack of preparedness led the office to draw that conclusion, it said. Sasquatch is a folkloric beast thought by some to roam the forests, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. The two men were found in a heavily wooded area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, which is about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of Portland. A family member reported them missing at around 1 a.m. on Christmas Day after they failed to return from a Christmas Eve outing. Sixty volunteer search-and-rescue personnel helped in the three-day search, including canine, drone and ground teams. The Coast Guard used infrared technology to search from the air. Authorities used camera recordings to locate the vehicle used by the pair off Oklahoma Road near Willard, which is on the southern border of the national forest. More articles from the BDN

The Detroit Lions have been one of the best teams in football this year, as Dan Campbell's squad is 12-1 and has a one-game lead over the Philadelphia Eagles for the No.1 seed in the NFC through 14 weeks. Detroit will host the Buffalo Bills in Week 15 at Ford Field in a potential Super Bowl preview. The Lions' offense is having another successful season under offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, as the unit leads the league in points per game (32.1) and is second in yards per game (394.8) behind the Baltimore Ravens . Though Detroit's offense has been dynamic in 2024, tight end Sam LaPorta is having a disappointing sophomore campaign. LaPorta had a historic rookie season in 2023, totaling 86 catches for 889 yards and ten touchdowns. In 12 games this year, the 23-year-old has hauled in just 36 receptions for 445 yards and five touchdowns. LaPorta has yet to garner over seven targets in a single game this season and hasn't been an integral part of the team's passing attack. Though the former Iowa standout is still one of the most promising young tight ends in the NFL, CBS Sports' Chris Trapasso predicts the Lions will select Penn State tight end Tyler Warren in the 2025 NFL Draft to pair with LaPorta. "Warren and Sam LaPorta would be a tremendous combination in Detroit catching passes from Jared Goff," Trapasso says. Warren has had a breakout 2024 campaign with Penn State, posting 88 catches for 1,062 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games. The senior has totaled 17 touchdowns in his collegiate career but didn't see significant playing time until 2023. Though tight end isn't a pressing need for the Lions, the team doesn't have many weaknesses, and general manager Brad Holmes has a history of taking the best player available instead of drafting based on need, as Holmes took running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the No.12 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft despite signing David Montgomery to a three-year deal that offseason. Overall, Tyler Warren would bring a nice mix of physicality and big play ability to the Lions' offense, and a tight-end duo of LaPorta and Warren would be lethal. Barclays PLC Increases Stock Position in American Superconductor Co. (NASDAQ:AMSC)ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras will be out for six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Zegras had surgery Thursday, the team announced. Zegras was injured last week on a fairly innocent-looking play during the Ducks' 4-1 loss to Vegas in Anaheim. Zegras and William Karlsson only briefly got their skates and stick blades entangled, but Zegras needed help to get off the ice after taking a fall. Zegras' torn meniscus is his third major injury in just over a year, although a torn meniscus is likely a fortunate outcome for a knee injury that could have been much worse. He was limited to 31 games last season by two injury setbacks, including a broken ankle that required surgery. Zegras has four goals and six assists in 24 games this season for Anaheim, which had lost four straight heading into its road game against Toronto on Thursday night. The Ducks surprisingly activated forward Robby Fabbri from injured reserve before they faced the Maple Leafs. Fabbri had arthroscopic knee surgery on Nov. 15 and is progressing much faster than his initial predicted timeline of six to eight weeks. AP NHL: https://apnews.com/NHLThe proposed merger between supermarket giants Kroger and Albertsons floundered on Tuesday after judges overseeing two separate cases both halted the merger. U.S. District Court Judge Adrienne Nelson issued a preliminary injunction blocking the merger Tuesday after holding a three-week hearing in Portland, Oregon. Later Tuesday, Judge Marshall Ferguson in Seattle issued a permanent injunction barring the merger in Washington after concluding that it would lessen competition in the state. Kroger and Albertsons in 2022 proposed what would be the largest grocery store merger in U.S. history. But the Federal Trade Commission sued earlier this year, asking Nelson to block the $24.6 billion deal until an in-house administrative judge at the FTC could consider the merger’s implications. Nelson agreed to pause the merger. “Any harms defendants experience as a result of the injunction do not overcome the strong public interest in the enforcement of antitrust law, especially given the difficulty in disentangling a premature merger,” she wrote in her opinion. Federal regulators argue that combining the two chains would be bad for consumers and workers by eliminating competition. The companies say a merger would help them better compete with big retailers like Walmart, Costco and Amazon. The case may now move to the FTC, although Kroger and Albertsons have asked a different federal judge to block the in-house proceedings. Colorado and Washington are also trying to halt the merger in ongoing state trials. The judge in Washington was expected to release his opinion later Tuesday. The FTC argued that Kroger and Albertsons currently compete in 22 states, closely matching each other on price, quality, private label products and services like store pickup. A merger would eliminate that competition and raise prices for already struggling consumers, the government said. The FTC also said the merger would hurt workers since Kroger and Albertsons would no longer compete to hire them. But Kroger and Albertsons argued their merger would preserve consumer choice by allowing them to better compete against its growing rivals. In its testimony, Albertsons warned Nelson that it might have to lay off workers, close stores and even exit some markets if the merger weren’t allowed to proceed. Under the merger agreement, Kroger and Albertsons would sell 579 stores in places where their locations overlap to C&S Wholesale Grocers, a New Hampshire-based supplier to independent supermarkets that also owns the Grand Union and Piggly Wiggly store brands. The FTC argued that C&S is ill-prepared to take on the stores and may want the option to sell or close them. But Kroger and Albertsons said C&S has the experience and national scale to handle the divestiture. Kroger, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, operates 2,800 stores in 35 states, including brands like Ralphs, Smith’s and Harris Teeter. Albertsons, based in Boise, Idaho, operates 2,273 stores in 34 states, including brands like Safeway, Jewel Osco and Shaw’s. Together, the companies employ around 710,000 people. CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Joseph Paintsil and Dejan Joveljic scored in the first half, and the LA Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final with goals from their star forwards, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league’s biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS’ most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing decade, even finishing 26th in the 29-team league last year. But the Galaxy turned everything around this season with a high-scoring new lineup that finished second in the Western Conference and then streaked through the playoffs with a whopping 18 goals in five games to win another crown. Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable charge through the playoffs ended one win shy of its first Cup championship. With the league's youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win MLS' playoff tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons. He was the MVP of the 2022 MLS Cup Final for the Galaxy's crosstown rival, Los Angeles FC. The Galaxy won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offense impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the Western Conference final. Puig watched the game in a suit, but his teammates hadn't forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA's opening goal with a superb pass, Paintsil held up Puig's jersey to their fans during the celebration. Paintsil put the Galaxy ahead in the ninth minute when he ran onto that sublime pass from Brugman and pounded home his 14th MLS goal — including four in the playoffs — in the Ghanaian forward's outstanding first season. Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home the 21st goal of his outstanding year as the Galaxy's striker. Nealis got New York on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when he volleyed home a ball that got loose in LA's penalty area after a corner. The Galaxy's usually shaky defense gave up another handful of good chances before reaching halftime with a tenuous lead. The second half was lively, but scoreless. Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while Gabriel Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose again in the Galaxy's penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn't finish. The Galaxy bench rushed onto the field and prematurely celebrated a victory in the seventh minute of injury time, only to be herded back off for another 30 seconds of play. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of traveling Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club’s breakthrough on MLS’ biggest stage. The Galaxy’s Greg Vanney became the fourth coach to win an MLS title with two clubs. The former Galaxy player also won it all with Toronto in 2017. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier “Chicharito” Hernández rebuilt itself this season with lesser-known young talents from around the world. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and the Ghanaian Paintsil out of Belgium, and the duo combined with incumbent Serbian striker Joveljic to form a potent attack that could outscore almost any MLS opponent. But the Galaxy also relied heavily on Puig, their Catalan catalyst and one of MLS’ best players. Puig stayed in last week's game after injuring his knee, and he even delivered the decisive pass to Joveljic for the game’s only goal. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/soccer
Opposition fighters are at Damascus' gates. Who are they and what now?By Emmanuel Oloniruha Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano has cried out to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that opposition parties are going through ?hell. Yusuf said this while appealing to INEC to work on measures that would guarantee the survival of opposition parties in Nigeria. Yusuf made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja during the visit of INEC members to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) office for routine party verification. The Kano governor who was represented by his Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, said that virile opposition was important for the survival of any democracy. “The opposition parties in this country are going through hell, politically. “All these crises, left, right and center, are artificial. They are being engineered and sponsored. “So, INEC should come up with ways to checkmate any untoward excess of any national government in power towards opposition. “I believe a vibrant opposition is the oxygen of democracy in any given situation. “Without any oxygen in the democracy, opposition is weak and dead, and democracy will fail,” Yusuf said. He, however, expressed confidence that the NNPP would in the nearest future win more elections including power at the central government. In his remarks, NNPP National Chairman, Ahmed Ajuji, pledged that NNPP would continue to play its role as the ruling party in Kano state, and a viable opposition in other parts of the country. He said that the annual verification exercise had laid to rest the falsehood by a group of expelled former members of NNPP claiming the management of the party had been handed over to them. “They claim that the management of the party has been handed over to them. “The fact that the electoral umpire, the regulator of parties, INEC have come here today to perform their statutory duty, shows that we have been, we are, and by God’s grace, shall continue to be the NNPP,” he said. Ajuji, however, warned members of the party against antiparty activities. “This is a democratic party. However, we shall not tolerate members who engage in anti-party activities to do so with impunity. “No matter how highly placed, all members are expected to remain disciplined and operate within the ambit of our constitution. The internal mechanisms of our party shall be guarded jealously,” he said. The party National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, also said that the issue of leadership of the party was strictly a Constitutional matter based on the extant statutes and regulations. He described the judgment “purportedly obtained” by Dr Aniebonam and his group at Abia State High Court, Uzuakoli as a ruse and without substance. “It is pyrrhic “victory” and confers nothing to Chief Aniebonam and his co-travellers. “The judgment is a default judgment that was obtained by fraud and therefore liable to be set aside, which process of setting same aside has already commenced,” he said.(NAN)
