Target says a woman, later identified as Marlena Velez, entered a store in Cape Coral on Oct. 30 and began shopping. While at the self-checkout, police said scanned barcodes for items of lesser value before walking out of the store. "Initially, our officers got a report from Target about this retail theft. They looked into it. They got the security footage. They had a still frame of this woman who’s basically scamming the self-checkout at Target," said Mercedes Simonds, public information officer for the Cape Coral Police Department. Police said the stolen items, including household goods and clothing, are valued at more than $500. After police posted the suspect's picture on their Facebook and Instagram accounts, an anonymous caller identified the woman as Velez. A video posted on her TikTok account documents herself as she gets ready to leave her home on Oct. 30 in the same outfit and glasses in the surveillance video. Velez is now charged with theft. While currently on leave as he deals with health issues, reports provided to MidlandToday suggest Hank Rowlinson doesn’t have any actual First Nation, Métis or Inuit blood. Rowlinson, who grew up in Sault Ste. Marie and now lives with his wife in Sudbury, says these allegations are false and that he has hired an investigator to track down the perpetrators. “It’s a drive-by smear campaign,” Rowlinson tells MidlandToday during a phone interview. “It’s not the first time. I’m just the flavour of the month they’re going after. Somebody started with false information and it’s like everything — it snowballs.” Last month, “expert genealogist” Cindy Cook sent MidlandToday a family tree and other documentation that she says shows that Rowlinson has no Indigenous roots. “I have thoroughly vetted this information,” she says. “I live where the chair of the MNO was raised and know his family and know that he is in no way Aboriginal.” In a social media post, Indigenous activist Crystal Semaganis says she and Rowlinson have many common friends and he is, by all accounts, a “popular” guy. “Everyone figures that because he is chair of the Métis Nation of Ontario and you’ve seen him at recent events like the MNO’s Annual Grifters Assembly . . . I mean AGA . . . everyone is going to assume this man is Métis. “He is not, not one drop of FNMI blood -- like the majority of the MNO is . . . not even Métis.” Semaganis says her organization, the Ghost Warrior Society, estimates that only 15 per cent of MNO members “are actually Red River. Forty per cent are non-status descendants of a First Nation, and the rest are straight-up settlers like Henry here.” When it comes to Rowlinson, Semaganis says an ancestry profile shows that his father was Serbian and there are no Indigenous descendants on his mother’s side. “Shake that tree as hard as you want, and nothing but settlers falls out of that tree.” But Rowlinson says those raising concerns don’t have the proper information regarding his ancestry. “My great-grandmother and great-grandfather hail from Manitoba. That’s where I get my Métis ancestry from. They got scrip,” he says, noting Alfred Oliver Roy and Kathy Amandière (sp.) were from St. Norbert, Man. “If they had the proper information on my ancestry and know the history of my family, they would obviously not be targeting me.” Rowlinson says he’s satisfied the citizen requirements of the MNO and that “I’ve proven myself through a third-party registry, Know History.” Once his investigator tracks down the names and addresses of those who are saying he’s not Métis, Rowlinson says his lawyer will file a “libel, slander and defamation lawsuit against everybody involved.” Rowlinson says the MNO takes ensuring the legitimacy of its registry seriously. “With the Métis Nation of Ontario, we have a third-party registrar. There’s no political interference. We’ve just gone through an in-depth review of everybody’s file.” Rowlinson says he doesn’t understand why the MNO is being targeted by various groups, including the Manitoba Métis Federation and Chiefs of Ontario, which held a conference highlighting what it sees as Indigenous identity fraud earlier this year. Adds Rowlinson: “If they had the education (they wouldn’t). You can’t change the facts of history.” Semaganis, meanwhile, is irked that the MNO continues to receive large amounts of annual funding since it’s “tight with (Premier) Doug Ford to keep the money train going. Disgusting.” The MNO receives close to $150 million in annual funding from the provincial and federal governments, something that upsets Semaganis, who is originally from Saskatchewan but now lives in Ontario. “They have more funding and programs, post-secondary education dollars than a Status Indian does in Ontario and probably more than any in Canada.” Until recently, the Ghost Warrior Society listed people across the country, who it determined weren’t actually Indigenous. It still offers resources for those looking to uncover what it calls ‘Pretendians’ along with a cartoon bear video . On its website, the MNO notes that Rowlinson has more than 25 years of full-time experience working various roles within the MNO. “A steadfast advocate for the Métis, Hank brings commitment, experience and determination that is needed as we enter into an era of self-government,” the MNO notes. “Respecting our statement of prime purpose, Hank believes that the way forward needs to be one of hope, optimism and vigilance and that we must be united to overcome barriers that may stand in our way.” Last year, the MNO featured 19 people on the province‘s so-called Sunshine List , with Rowlinson receiving $120,800 in compensation.

KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — A feud over proposed pickleball courts in Prince Edward Island has prompted a longtime mayor to throw in the towel. Rowan Caseley says there was lots he still wanted to accomplish as mayor of Kensington, P.E.I., but he felt he had to resign Monday after the town council voted to build six pickleball courts Caseley says the community can't afford. He was mayor for about 10 years and a councillor for five years before that. "As mayor, one of the things I'm required to do is defend the decision of council, and I couldn't," Caseley said in an interview Wednesday. "It just went totally against my principles." He said his opposition is not meant as a critique of the local pickleball community, about a dozen of whom filled council chambers as the vote took place. The growing town simply has more pressing needs to tend to. Pickleball is much like tennis, but players hit a hollow perforated plastic ball, rather than a rubber tennis ball. The balls make a resonant popping sound when players hit them with their rackets, and the noise from pickleball courts has irritated neighbours and drawn complaints across the country. There are already several pickleball courts in Kensington, which is home to about 2,300 people, Caseley said. But at the urging of some councillors, the town put together a proposal for six new courts, a bathroom and a gravel parking lot, and submitted it to the 2023 Canada Games Legacy Fund, established after the province hosted the Games. When the fund said it would cover just 55 per cent of the $500,000 price tag, Caseley said he and senior staff members recommended that council abandon the project. But on Monday, Coun. Ivan Gallant put forward a motion to proceed with a scaled-down version of the project that would leave the town on the hook for roughly $20,000, said Geoff Baker, Kensington's chief administrative officer. The motion passed 3-2. Caseley said he interpreted it as a vote of non-confidence. Gallant is a member of the local pickleball community, though he denied urging fellow players to fill the chamber for the vote. "Anybody in our community is eligible to come to our meetings, they're open to the public," Gallant said in an interview. Caseley argued that even the scaled-down plan with the smaller price tag would still eat up staff time and operating costs. That time and money would be much better spent on projects to support the community's growing population, such as expanding its waste treatment system, the ex-mayor said. "Staff are going to have to drop other things that were a higher priority to deal with this," he said. "It's not in the best interest of the residents, the taxpayers or the town of Kensington. It's a want and not a need." Caseley said he wasn't yet sure what he would do with his new-found free time, but he has no interest in taking up pickleball. Wearable technology — smartwatches, smart rings, fitness trackers and the like — monitors body-centric data such as your heart rate, steps taken and calories burned, and may record where you go along the way. Like Santa Claus, it knows when you are sleeping (and how well), it knows when you’re awake, it knows when you’ve been idle or exercising, and it keeps track of all of it. People are also sharing sensitive health information on health and wellness apps , including online mental health and counseling programs. Some women use period tracker apps to map out their monthly cycle. These devices and services have excited consumers hoping for better insight into their health and lifestyle choices. But the lack of oversight into how body-centric data are used and shared with third parties has prompted concerns from privacy experts, who warn that the data could be sold or lost through data breaches, then used to raise insurance premiums, discriminate surreptitiously against applicants for jobs or housing, and even perform surveillance. The use of wearable technology and medical apps surged in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, but research released by Mozilla on Wednesday indicates that current laws offer little protection for consumers who are often unaware just how much of their health data are being collected and shared by companies. “I’ve been studying the intersections of emerging technologies, data-driven technologies, AI and human rights and social justice for the past 15 years, and since the pandemic I’ve noticed the industry has become hyper-focused on our bodies,” said Mozilla Foundation technology fellow Júlia Keserű, who conducted the research. “That permeates into all kinds of areas of our lives and all kinds of domains within the tech industry.” The report “From Skin to Screen: Bodily Integrity in the Digital Age” recommends that existing data protection laws be clarified to encompass all forms of bodily data. It also calls for expanding national health privacy laws to cover health-related information collected from health apps and fitness trackers and making it easier for users to opt out of body-centric data collections. Researchers have been raising alarms about health data privacy for years. Data collected by companies are often sold to data brokers or groups that buy, sell and trade data from the internet to create detailed consumer profiles. Body-centric data can include information such as the fingerprints used to unlock phones, face scans from facial recognition technology, and data from fitness and fertility trackers, mental health apps and digital medical records. One of the key reasons health information has value to companies — even when the person’s name is not associated with it — is that advertisers can use the data to send targeted ads to groups of people based on certain details they share. The information contained in these consumer profiles is becoming so detailed, however, that when paired with other data sets that include location information, it could be possible to target specific individuals, Keserű said. Location data can “expose sophisticated insights about people’s health status, through their visits to places like hospitals or abortions clinics,” Mozilla’s report said, adding that “companies like Google have been reported to keep such data even after promising to delete it.” A 2023 report by Duke University revealed that data brokers were selling sensitive data on individuals’ mental health conditions on the open market. While many brokers deleted personal identifiers, some provided names and addresses of individuals seeking mental health assistance, according to the report. In two public surveys conducted as part of the research, Keserű said, participants were outraged and felt exploited in scenarios where their health data were sold for a profit without their knowledge. “We need a new approach to our digital interactions that recognizes the fundamental rights of individuals to safeguard their bodily data, an issue that speaks directly to human autonomy and dignity,” Keserű said. “As technology continues to advance, it is critical that our laws and practices evolve to meet the unique challenges of this era.” Consumers often take part in these technologies without fully understanding the implications. Last month, Elon Musk suggested on X that users submit X-rays, PET scans, MRIs and other medical images to Grok, the platform’s artificial intelligence chatbot, to seek diagnoses. The issue alarmed privacy experts, but many X users heeded Musk’s call and submitted health information to the chatbot. While X’s privacy policy says that the company will not sell user data to third parties, it does share some information with certain business partners. Gaps in existing laws have allowed the widespread sharing of biometric and other body-related data. Health information provided to hospitals, doctor’s offices and medical insurance companies is protected from disclosure under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act , known as HIPAA, which established federal standards protecting such information from release without the patient’s consent. But health data collected by many wearable devices and health and wellness apps don’t fall under HIPAA’s umbrella, said Suzanne Bernstein, counsel at Electronic Privacy Information Center. “In the U.S. because we don’t have a comprehensive federal privacy law ... it falls to the state level,” she said. But not every state has weighed in on the issue. Washington, Nevada and Connecticut all recently passed laws to provide safeguards for consumer health data. Washington, D.C., in July introduced legislation that aimed to require tech companies to adhere to strengthened privacy provisions regarding the collection, sharing, use or sale of consumer health data. In California, the California Privacy Rights Act regulates how businesses can use certain types of sensitive information, including biometric information, and requires them to offer consumers the ability to opt out of disclosure of sensitive personal information. “This information being sold or shared with data brokers and other entities hypercharge the online profiling that we’re so used to at this point, and the more sensitive the data, the more sophisticated the profiling can be,” Bernstein said. “A lot of the sharing or selling with third parties is outside the scope of what a consumer would reasonably expect.” Health information has become a prime target for hackers seeking to extort healthcare agencies and individuals after accessing sensitive patient data. Health-related cybersecurity breaches and ransom attacks increased more than 4,000% between 2009 and 2023, targeting the booming market of body-centric data, which is expected to exceed $500 billion by 2030, according to the report. “Nonconsensual data sharing is a big issue,” Keserű said. “Even if it’s biometric data or health data, a lot of the companies are just sharing that data without you knowing, and that is causing a lot of anxiety and questions.” ©2024 Los Angeles Times. Despite these setbacks, Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has continued to stage regular protests. This recent gathering marked the largest protest in Islamabad since the February elections. (AP) — A U.S. senator has called for mysterious drones spotted flying at night over sensitive areas in New Jersey and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic region to be “shot down, if necessary,” even as it remains unclear who owns the unmanned aircraft. “We should be doing some very urgent intelligence analysis and take them out of the skies, especially if they’re flying over airports or military bases,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said Thursday, as concerns about the drones spread across Capitol Hill. People in the New York region are also concerned that the drones may be sharing airspace with commercial airlines, he said, demanding more transparency from the Biden administration. The White House said Thursday that a review of the reported sightings shows that many of them are actually manned aircraft being flown lawfully. White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said there were no reported sightings in any restricted airspace. He said the U.S. Coast Guard has not uncovered any foreign involvement from coastal vessels. “We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or a public safety threat, or have a foreign nexus,” Kirby said, echoing statements from the Pentagon and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh has said they are not U.S. military drones. In a joint statement issued Thursday afternoon, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security said they and their federal partners, in close coordination with the New Jersey State Police, “continue to deploy personnel and technology to investigate this situation and confirm whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.” The agencies said they have not corroborated any of the reported sightings with electronic detection, and that reviews of available images appear to show many of the reported drones are actually manned aircraft. “There are no reported or confirmed drone sightings in any restricted air space,” according to the statement. The drones appear to avoid detection by traditional methods such as helicopter and radio, according to a state lawmaker briefed Wednesday by the Department of Homeland Security. The number of sightings has increased in recent days, though officials say many of the objects seen may have been planes rather than drones. It’s also possible that a single drone has been reported more than once. The worry stems partly from the flying objects initially being spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. In a post on the social media platform X, Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia described the drones as up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in diameter and sometimes traveling with their lights switched off. Drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use but are subject to local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. Operators must be FAA certified. Most, but not all, of the drones spotted in New Jersey appeared to be larger than those typically used by hobbyists. Sen. Duesler said the drones — and those flying them — likely cannot evade detection. “They will leave a radio frequency footprint, they all leave a signature," he said. "We will find out what kind of drones they were, who was flying them and where they were flying them.” Fantasia, a Morris County Republican, was among several lawmakers who met with state police and Homeland Security officials to discuss the sightings from the New York City area across New Jersey and westward into parts of Pennsylvania, including over Philadelphia.
