Nearly two years later, he recalls, “The guy that I beat up sees me on MTV’s ‘Yo Mama,’ and he’s like, ‘That’s the guy that beat me up!’ ” Then the gang unit raided the strip club he was DJing at. “I fight it, I lose, and I’m in prison. There’s no more freedom of speech. So the comedian is completely gone. I’m now in survival mode.” He did three years. Guards remembered seeing him perform at the Ontario Improv. Everyone knew he was on TV. He did perform inside sometimes, including for the warden and 500 inmates. Most tattoos he sports today, he got as an inmate . He hid tobacco up his ass in a latex glove so he could sell it. He also saw riots, an OD, murder and fights, during one of which he lost a tooth. He continues experiencing nightmares and PTSD. When he got out in 2009, he met iPhones and his new baby daughter. “Prison was the best thing for me; it humbled me,” he says. “There’s no more fighting. There is only using your words. It showed me discipline and being sober in there, I got to look outside myself and realize all the people that I hurt, that love me. I learned in prison when you make a mistake, you confess to it, you fix it and you grow.” Fifteen years later, Perez’s credits include Netflix, HBO and the film “Taco Shop” with Carlos Alazraqui, Esparza and Brian Huskey. He records his first-hand “George Perez Stories” podcast and YouTube videos in a studio wallpapered with every vinyl comedy album he can find. Something else had happened that he didn’t address for years. “I dig deep,” he says of the impetus for “Misunderstood.” “I had a son that passed away because the babysitter left him in the tub.” He wasn’t allowed to attend services. Following three years out on parole, he tangled with cocaine. “Drugs would numb me and I wouldn’t think about my son and the bad things that have happened to me in my life, friends that I’ve lost.” Today he continues to be more honest about past tragedies and new growth than ever. At most, there’s a little tequila now and then to celebrate. His time in prison, journeys with addiction and struggles with mental health; all of it part of Perez’s artistic expression. “I just started writing. I’m no longer up there going, ‘Latinos make some noise!’ It’s, ‘This hurts, and I have to find a way out.’ It’s personal.” “I mean, you can’t cancel me. I went to prison for three years when my comedy was in its prime, came out and I’m doing better than I was before. I’m not looking to be on a sitcom. I want to be an artistic comedian. When someone sees me onstage, like, ‘This guy looks like me. He’s gone through the same thing I’ve gone through.’ That’s what I want to accomplish.”

After a heart-wrenching 42 hours fearing her teenage daughter was dead, Amy Walsh has received the best Christmas present of all: "I have my girl". 19-year-old Maia Johnston left Walsh's Upper Hutt home on Saturday night, and was found on Monday afternoon in the bushy hills surrounding Totara Park where she had fallen down a waterfall, breaking her leg, multiple ribs, and suffering facial injuries . "Got lost in mountains and fell down [an] almost two storey waterfall, couldn't walk my way out and I'll be in hospital for a while," she posted on social media on Tuesday morning. The search for the missing teen began on Saturday, which Walsh said had started out as "a really great day". Saturday Johnston, her siblings and her best friend Keri had travelled down from Hamilton to celebrate an early whānau Christmas. Johnston and Keri had been to the park in the early evening and sat chatting on the doorstep when they returned, Walsh said. Saturday 21 December 8pm "Maia said to Keri about 8 o'clock, 'I just need some time by myself'," said Walsh. That was not unusual, and Johnston had not been upset, she said. "There was nothing out of character to need a bit of fresh air. So she's walked off with just a vape." They had no idea where Johnston was - and Johnston did not know the area at all. Saturday 21 December 9.40pm Walsh calls the police and reports her daughter missing. She posts on a local Facebook page too, and locals brave the weather to search the area through the night. Sunday 22 December There's no sign of Johnston, the search continues and a plea goes out for more help. An online group chat is created with people from Totara Park, Upper Hutt, Porirua, Stokes Valley and further afield wanting to join the search, which grows to more than 70 people. They knock on doors throughout Totara Park, and put the call out for CCTV footage, in a bid to piece together Johnston's movements. By midnight, Walsh is exhausted, having searched for 27 hours straight. She finally goes home to sleep so she can continue looking for her daughter on Monday. Some volunteers told RNZ they were out searching until 3am on Monday. Monday 23 December 10am A base is set up at the Totara Park School Hall in an effort to better co-ordinate the search. Organisers Penny Clash and Susan Stevenson spoke with people about where they had been, directed their next search areas, and documented everything on a whiteboard. Dozens of people were in and out of the hall, and after flyers arrived, some were tasked with letterbox drops. Walsh and whānau headed to the bottom of the hill where Johnston would be brought out. It's a bit of a wait, as a special stretcher had to be delivered from Wellington Hospital. Monday 23 December 3.30pm Maia is stretchered out of the bush and into an ambulance, accompanied by her parents. Her whānau are crying and embracing - just glad Johnston is alive. Tuesday 24 December Walsh posts on social media that her daughter is likely to be in hospital for weeks and needed multiple surgeries - her first was on her spleen overnight, and she was due for her second on Tuesday morning. DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli troops stormed one of the last hospitals operating in northern Gaza on Friday, forcing many staff and patients outside to strip in winter weather , the territory’s health ministry said. The army denied claims it had entered or set fire to the complex and accused Hamas of using the facility for cover. Kamal Adwan Hospital has been hit multiple times over the past three months by Israeli troops waging an offensive against Hamas fighters in surrounding neighborhoods, according to staff. The ministry said a strike on the hospital a day earlier killed five medical staff. Israel's military said it was conducting operations against Hamas infrastructure and militants in the area and had ordered people out of the hospital, but said it had not entered the complex as of Friday night. It repeated claims that Hamas militants operate inside Kamal Adwan but provided no evidence. Hospital officials have denied that. The Health Ministry said troops forced medical personnel and patients to assemble in the yard and remove their clothes. Some were led to an unknown location, while some patients were sent to the nearby Indonesian Hospital, which was knocked out of operation after an Israel raid this week. Israeli troops during raids frequently carry out mass detentions, stripping men to their underwear for questioning in what the military says is a security measure as they search for Hamas fighters. The Associated Press doesn’t have access to Kamal Adwan, but armed plainclothes members of the Hamas-led police forces have been seen in other hospitals, maintaining security but also controlling access to parts of the facilities. The Health Ministry said Israeli troops also set fires in several parts of Kamal Adwan, including the lab and surgery department. It said 25 patients and 60 health workers remained in the hospital. The account could not be independently confirmed, and attempts to reach hospital staff were unsuccessful. “Fire is ablaze everywhere in the hospital,” an unidentified staff member said in an audio message posted on social media accounts of hospital director Hossam Abu Safiya. The staffer said some evacuated patients had been unhooked from oxygen. “There are currently patients who could die at any moment,” she said. Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, an Israeli military spokesman, denied the accusations. “While IDF troops were not in the hospital, a small fire broke out in an empty building inside the hospital that is under control,” he said Friday night. He said a preliminary investigation found “no connection” between military activity and the fire. The Israeli military heavily restricts the movements of Palestinians in Gaza and has barred foreign journalists from entering the territory throughout the war, making it difficult to verify information. “These actions put the lives of all of these people in even more danger than what they faced before,” U.N. spokesperson Stephanie Tremblay told journalists, and noted colleagues' reports of “significant damage” to the hospital. It warned that forcibly evacuating the hospital would “abandon thousands of residents in northern Gaza.” Before the latest deaths Thursday, the group documented five other staffers killed by Israeli fire since October. Israel launched its campaign in Gaza vowing to destroy Hamas after the group’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel in which militants killed around 1,200 people and abducted some 250 others. Around 100 Israelis remain captive in Gaza, around a third believed to be dead. Israel’s nearly 15-month-old campaign of bombardment and offensives has devastated the territory’s health sector. In a new study by Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine in the US and published in the journal Science Advances, scientists sought to better understand how humans evolved to become so skilled at thinking about what’s happening in other peoples’ minds. “We spend a lot of time wondering, ‘What is that person feeling, thinking? Did I say something to upset them?’” said senior author Rodrigo Braga. The parts of the brain that allow us to do this are in regions of the human brain that have expanded recently in our evolution, and that implies that it’s a recently developed process. “In essence, you’re putting yourself in someone else’s mind and making inferences about what that person is thinking when you cannot really know,” Braga added. The study found the more recently evolved and advanced parts of the human brain that support social interactions — called the social cognitive network — are connected to and in constant communication with an ancient part of the brain called the amygdala. Often referred to as our “lizard brain,” the amygdala typically is associated with detecting threats and processing fear. “The amygdala is responsible for social behaviours like parenting, mating, aggression and the navigation of social-dominance hierarchies,” said Braga, adding that previous studies have found co-activation of the amygdala and social cognitive network, but “our study is novel because it shows the communication is always happening.” Within the amygdala, there’s a specific part called the medial nucleus that is very important for social behaviours. This study was the first to show the amygdala’s medial nucleus is connected to newly evolved social cognitive network regions, which are involved in thinking about other people. This link to the amygdala helps shape the function of the social cognitive network by giving it access to the amygdala’s role in processing emotionally important content, said scientists. Both anxiety and depression involve amygdala hyperactivity, which can contribute to excessive emotional responses and impaired emotional regulation. With this study’s findings, a much less-invasive procedure, trans-cranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), might be able to use knowledge about this brain connection to improve treatment, the authors said.
