MALAGA, Spain (AP) — The last man to face — and beat — Rafael Nadal in professional tennis, 80th-ranked Botic van de Zandschulp , converted his 10th match point Friday to finally close out a 6-4, 6-7 (12), 6-3 victory over Daniel Altmaier and help the Netherlands reach its first Davis Cup final by sweeping Germany. Tallon Griekspoor, who is ranked 40th, sealed the 2-0 win for the Dutch in the best-of-three-match semifinal by hitting 25 aces and coming back to defeat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-4. When it ended, appropriately, on an ace, Griekspoor shut his eyes, dropped to his knees and spread his arms wide. “We have been talking about this for two, three years,” Griekspoor said. “We believed in ourselves so much. We always felt like this was possible. To do it now feels unbelievable.” The other semifinal is Saturday, with No. 1-ranked Jannik Sinner and defending champion Italy taking on Australia . The championship will be decided Sunday. “We don’t have that top 5 player. We don’t that top 10 player. We don’t have that top 15 player,” Dutch captain Paul Harhuuis said. “But it’s a team effort. ... So proud of these guys.” In Friday's opener, van de Zandschulp was up a set and just a point away from leading 5-2 in the second when Altmaier began playing more aggressively and interacting more with the German fans, yelling and throwing uppercuts or raising his arms after key points. In the tiebreaker, Altmaier managed to save five match points before converting his own fourth set point to extend the contest. But van de Zandschulp — who upset four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open — quickly moved out front in the final set, even if he eventually needed five more match points in the last game before serving it out. “At some point, I didn’t know what to do any more on the match points,” van de Zandschulp said. “I had the toughest match of my life on Tuesday (against Nadal), so everything that comes next is maybe a little bit easier.” In the quarterfinals, van de Zandschulp outplayed Nadal for a 6-4, 6-4 result that marked the end of the 22-time Grand Slam champion’s career because the Netherlands went on to eliminate Spain 2-1. The 38-year-old Nadal announced last month that the Davis Cup would be his final event before retiring. Presumably because people purchased tickets ahead of time with plans to watch Nadal compete in the semifinals, there were hundreds of unoccupied blue or gray seats surrounding the indoor hard court at the Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martina Carpena in southern Spain on Friday. Now truly a neutral site, the place was not nearly as loud and rowdy as on Tuesday, although there were shouts of “Vamos, Rafa!” that drew laughter while van de Zandschulp played the 88th-ranked Altmaier. It took Griekspoor more than 75 minutes and nearly two full sets to figure out how to break No. 43 Struff and then did it twice in a row — to lead 6-5 in the second set, and then go up 1-0 in the third. That was plenty, because Griekspoor saved the only two break points he faced. The Netherlands hadn’t been to the semifinals since 2001. The Germans — whose best current player, two-time major finalist Alexander Zverev, is not on the team in Malaga — have won three Davis Cups, but not since 1993, when 1991 Wimbledon champion Michael Stich led them to the title. Mumbai: Government-backed bad loan aggregator National Asset Reconstruction Co ( NARCL ) is set to take over the distressed textile company Sri Govindaraja Mills after its ₹270 crore offer to lenders did not receive competing bids. Chennai-based Sri Govindaraja has been a non-performing asset for five years and owes creditors led by Canara Bank more than ₹750 crore. The ₹270 crore offer from NARCL equates to a 36% recovery for lenders. NARCL will pay banks through a mix of 15% cash upfront and 85% security receipts which can be redeemed later. This is the second asset NARCL has been selected as the winning bidder. Last month its ₹300 crore offer for ₹1,773 crore loans in Bareilly Highways Project received no counterbids during a Swiss challenge auction. "Govindaraja timeline ended earlier this month. Since no counteroffers were received, NARCL will take over the account. Paperwork including arranging of specific government guarantees is being drawn up and this account will be soon transferred to NARCL," said a person familiar with the matter. NARCL did not reply to an email seeking comment. So he is relieved to learn that a British detective inspector, Mervin Wilson, is currently holidaying on the island and arranges for him to extend his stay - just as reports come in that a second Santa has been shot dead. Don Gilet joins the team as DI Mervin Wilson, with Marcus Brigstocke, Jim Howick, Dex Lee, Elizabeth Carling and Angela Griffin RT says:: Such is the popularity of Death in Paradise that the prospect of a new detective inspector arriving on Saint Marie is now met with almost Doctor Who levels of anticipation. So, what to make of Don Gilet as the latest series lead, Mervin Wilson? Well, the first thing to note is that he’s refreshingly free of oddball quirks, his key idiosyncrasies being a bucket hat and an irritated air. But to be fair to him, he does have a point about his team being under-resourced, as there are so many murders on this island, you’d expect the police force to be staffed like CSI. Yet this annoyance does tend to alienate those around him, with Darlene giving Mervin the nickname “DI Fancy Pants” and Catherine labelling him “rude”. For viewers, though, the lively Gilet is undeniably fun to watch and his debut case suitably tricksy, involving as it does three Santas shot at the same time with a single firearm. The result is a satisfying, twist-filled slay ride. The two friends have known each other since they met at college and have been making Inside No 9 for ten years, so emotions are mixed. “I feel like I’m sick of being asked how I feel,” to quote a tired Pemberton. The actress brings to life the miserly Scrooge, as he's visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come RT says:: Dickens’s covetous sinner Scrooge is brought to life by Anne-Marie Duff, who sits in a candlelit office of dark wood and thick ledgers for a carefully abridged retelling of this classic story. The writer’s conversational but vivid style suits the set-up, and Duff is in her element as she gives voice to the admonitions of Jacob Marley and the bonhomie of Fezziwig, the only accompaniment to her words being the odd silhouette at windows fringed with snow. WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said her agency will need to start taking “extraordinary measures,” or special accounting maneuvers intended to prevent the nation from hitting the debt ceiling , as early as January 14, in a letter sent to congressional leaders Friday afternoon. "Treasury expects to hit the statutory debt ceiling between January 14 and January 23," Yellen wrote in a letter addressed to House and Senate leadership, at which point extraordinary measures would be used to prevent the government from breaching the nation's debt ceiling — which has been suspended until Jan. 1, 2025. The department has in the past deployed what are known as “extraordinary measures” or accounting maneuvers to keep the government operating. But once those measures run out the government risks defaulting on its debt unless lawmakers and the president agree to lift the limit on the U.S. government’s ability to borrow. "I respectfully urge Congress to act to protect the full faith and credit of the United States," she said. The news comes after President Joe Biden signed a bill into law last week that averted a government shutdown but did not include President-elect Donald Trump’s core debt demand to raise or suspend the nation’s debt limit. The bill was approved by Congress only after fierce internal debate among Republicans over how to handle Trump's demand. “Anything else is a betrayal of our country,” Trump said in a statement. After a protracted debate in the summer of 2023 over how to fund the government, policymakers crafted the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which included suspending the nation's $31.4 trillion borrowing authority until Jan. 1, 2025. Notably however, Yellen said, on Jan. 2 the debt is projected to temporarily decrease due to a scheduled redemption of nonmarketable securities held by a federal trust fund associated with Medicare payments. As a result, “Treasury does not expect that it will be necessary to start taking extraordinary measures on January 2 to prevent the United States from defaulting on its obligations," she said. The federal debt currently stands at roughly $36 trillion — which ballooned across both Republican and Democratic administrations. And the spike in inflation after the coronavirus pandemic pushed up government borrowing costs such that debt service next year will exceed spending on national security. Republicans, who will have full control of the White House, House and Senate in the new year, have big plans to extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts and other priorities but debate over how to pay for them. The Chandigarh traffic police collected a whopping ₹ 22.69 crore in fines from traffic violators this year till December 24. The figure was almost half, at ₹ 10.35 crore, last year. A total of 9.68 lakh challans were issued this year out of which, 1,40,286 were generated by on-the-spot enforcement devices while the majority—8,28,672 challans—were issued using ITMS (Integrated Traffic Management System) cameras. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sumer Pratap Singh, said, “A significant number of challans are now being issued through CCTV cameras, which highlights the increasing role of technology in our traffic enforcement efforts. Violators have an option to pay challans online through links directly sent to them on their system. This shift allows us to monitor violations more efficiently and ensures that offenders are held accountable.” Under the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), more than 2,000 CCTV cameras have been installed in the city at 47 odd traffic junctions to keep a check on traffic violators. A dedicated fibre network (250km) has been laid with CCTVs being installed at 267 locations. Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Ram Gopal, who is also heading the PCCC, said, “Our teams at PCCC monitor traffic violations round-the-clock in three shifts: morning, afternoon, and night. Each shift is staffed by 30 to 32 operators who are dedicated to tracking and addressing traffic violations.” Rudesh Kumar, project manager at ICCC, explained, “Under this project, there are 2,100 CCTV cameras installed across Chandigarh. What sets this system apart from other cities is that it is AI-driven. This means that the cameras are capable of automatically detecting and recording traffic violations, even when an operator is not actively monitoring the system. The system is programmed to recognise specific traffic offences as defined in the system’s database. Once a violation is detected in the camera, it automatically captures it. The operator later reviews the footage, confirms the violation, and then issues the challan. In contrast, in other cities, the operator manually observes the footage in real time and issues a challan based on their assessment.” Red-light jumping most frequent offence An analysis of the data reveals red light jumping as the most frequent offence, accounting for 4,89,382 challans, nearly 50% of the total violations. Speeding followed with 1,45,307 challans. Violations of helmet rules were also a significant concern, with 84,616 challans issued to riders without helmets. “The highest number of challans are issued for red-light jumping, as 40 major junctions in the city are equipped with cameras that detect this violation. As a result, violators who jump red lights are captured more frequently. In contrast, there are currently 10 cameras monitoring for speeding violations. However, there are plans to expand the network by adding more cameras in the future,” added Kumar. The Atlanta Falcons re-signed linebacker Rashaan Evans to the practice squad on Tuesday. Evans played in two games for the Falcons earlier this season and received one defensive snap and five on special teams. He was on the roster Weeks 9-15 before being released Dec. 21. Evans, 29, was a first-round pick (22nd overall) in 2018 by the Tennessee Titans. He spent four seasons with the Titans before signing with the Falcons prior to the 2022 season. Evans stood out for Atlanta in 2022 with a career-high 159 tackles and two sacks. He played in nine games for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. Overall, Evans has 485 tackles and five sacks in 87 career games (68 starts) over seven NFL seasons. Atlanta also signed defensive lineman Kyler Baugh to the practice squad. He was on the practice squads of the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants earlier this season. Baugh, 23, has not played in an NFL game. He originally was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New Orleans Saints following the 2024 NFL Draft. --Field Level Media
