BEREA, Ohio — Jameis Winston went viral on Monday night for saying he was praying for the Lord to deliver him from his pick-sixes, of which he had two in the 41-32 loss to the Broncos. The second-worst thing about the pair off pick-sixes in Denver, other than the fact the second, with 1:48 left, prevented the Browns from attempting the game-winning field goal, is that it came in a beautiful, gutsy, heroic, fun 497-yard, four-TD performance. Instead of Winston earning AFC Offensive Player of the Week for the wild ride and big upset, he’s answering questions about those pesky picks, of which he threw a total of three in the game. But Winston has been down this road before, and he’s determined to make sure that you see more than the I-N-T when you look at his last name. That you remember the snow angels and the high-fives and the pointing to the skies, and not some dude from the other team racing to the house with one of his passes. “I’m not going to let a narrative of turnovers define who I am,” he said. “I’m going to continue to step back up to the plate. That’s a baseball reference. I was a great baseball player too. Keep on stepping back up to the plate and swinging for the fences. But man, I’m swinging to hit line drives ... when you’ve got a good pitcher that’s staying low and away, man, you hit a line drive into right center and you live to have another at-bat.” Winston, who’s thrown 11 touchdowns against his seven INTs in his five starts this season (2-3 record), thought he shed this label after the 2019 season, his last in Tampa Bay, when he led the NFL with 33 touchdown passes — but also 30 interceptions. The 30 ties for seventh-most in the NFL. The Bucs let him walk, and signed Tom Brady to replace him. Winston signed with the Saints, and had one of his most formative years in the NFL, learning from Hall of Fame QB Drew Brees and coach Sean Payton in 2020. “2019 was one of the most up and down years probably in NFL history,” Winston said. “I thought about negatives too much and you can’t think positive and negative at the same time. There’s no way that your brain can do that. It’s one or the other. I believe that just weighed on me because I wanted to do so good.” After that 7-9 season, he had heart-to-heart talks with his all of his coaches, including head coach Bruce Arians and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. “I had to understand, we did great on offense,” he said. “I just had some unfortunate turnovers. And turnovers, they can change the outcome of a football game. So talking to them, ‘Jameis, keep focusing on your decisions. Keep on playing, Jameis. Don’t let that define you.’ And that’s what I’m doing right now in my career.” The next time Winston got his chance as a full-time starter, for the Saints in 2021, he threw 14 TDs and only three INTs en route to a 5-2 record. Unfortunately for him, he suffered a season-ending torn ACL and MCL in Week 7, truncating his season of glory. He reclaimed his starting job the next year, but suffered four fractures in his back and succumbed to it after three starts and a 1-2 record. When he got healthy, his job had been given by coach Dennis Allen to Andy Dalton. “We stayed ahead of the chains, we were efficient in the running game and things just went well (in that 2021 season),” Winston said. “I believe that my whole process of playing the quarterback position is to focus on those decisions.” Offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey will keep coaching him hard on the fundamentals, even though Winston is in his 10th season. “That’s just something we’ve just got to keep focusing on, keep correcting, keep working at and making sure that we keep our attention to detail where it needs to be in terms of the number one thing protecting the football,” he said. “And I think Jameis is the first one to admit that. At the end of the day, the quarterback has the ultimate responsibility for it.” Winston noted that he made the right decisions on the pick-sixes, one that resulted in a 71-yard TD by defensive end Nik Bonitto, and the one at the end that resulted in the 44-yard touchdown by cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian. On the first one, Bonitto read Winston’s eyes, vacated David Njoku and jumped the route to Jordan Akins, easily picking it off. On the second one, he threw the ball behind Elijah Moore, and McMillian made him pay. “The decisions were right,” he said. “The technique, an out-breaking route, you can’t leave the ball inside. I’ve seen that a lot. That’s not my only pick-six to the left that I seen that I had to go and chase down. When you leave the ball inside on throws to the left and the receiver’s outbreaking, that happens in the NFL. “When you’re in the red zone and the ball is low, you get picks. Honestly, the one that Nik (made) that was a great play. He hid behind Jordan, I threw it and he just snuck in there and he took it to the house. They make good plays too.” The good thing for Winston is that he has an aggressive play-caller in Dorsey, who will keep dialing up the deep shots and trusting him to make the play. It’s resulted in some eye-popping numbers for Winston, who leads the NFL with 336 passing yards per game since taking over as the starter in Week 8. Winston and Joe Burrow are the only QBs in the NFL averaging more than 300 yards a game in that span. “One of our mottos as a team is that we’re smart, not conservative,” Winston said. “And my approach to the game is to attack the defense. But the beautiful thing about the quarterback is we touch the ball every single play, and it’s more important to take care of the ball than sometimes make that huge play. “I’m going to make the play when it’s time to make the play.” Winston, who’s put the joy back into Browns Town this season, vows not dwell on the picks. He won’t manifest them by focusing on what he doesn’t want. Against the Steelers, he must also protect the ball against the league’s No. 3 team in forced fumbles with 15. So how is he working through it? “Literally prayer and I snap it clear, man,” he said. “You can’t go into a game thinking about turnovers. Only thing you can do is go into the game focusing on protecting the football. When it’s time for me to make the play for the team, as a great quarterback I have to make that play.” After the game, Winston stood at the podium, his voice quivering at times, and took ownership for the pick-sixes, while also vowing to pray for deliverance. He also admitted that he apologized to his teammates after the game. “Accountability, dependability, credibility are three things that those abilities are very important to me,” he said. “Because if you’re able to take the good, you should be able to address the not so good. If you’re able to want the best from one of your teammates, you should be able to take the criticism from media or from coaches, as well. And I think it’s a balance between both. Obviously I don’t want to get criticized and I don’t want to have to talk about bad football, but when it does arise, you be accountable for it and you get better.” His teammates to a man have supported him wholeheartedly after the three-pick game, his second in five starts. “It means that they know I got their back, so they got my back,” he said. “I have to continue to prove that to them and not just say it.” Browns left guard Joel Bitonio appreciated Winston owning the picks and vowing to improve. “Yeah, same old Jameis,” he said. “He took all the blame. It’s a team game. It’s not all one guy’s fault, but he’s focused on this week and he’s trying to be better for us. But we’re in this position because of him as well, so it’s give and take, but he’s focused, he’s ready. He’s always going to be Jameis, so we’re ready to roll.” Bitonio is riding with the gunslinger all the way. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Saturday he had an “excellent conversation” with Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club after the president-elect’s threat to impose significant tariffs on two of America’s leading trade partners raised alarms in Ottawa and Mexico City . It was unclear, as Trudeau headed back to Canada from Florida, whether the conversation had alleviated Trump’s concerns. A person familiar with the details of the leaders’ hastily arranged meeting Friday night said it was a “positive wide-ranging dinner that lasted three hours.” The official, who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said topics included trade, border security, fentanyl, defense, Ukraine , NATO, China, the Mideast and pipelines, as well as the Group of 7 meeting in Canada next year. The Republican president-elect has threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico if the countries don’t stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across their borders. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders when he takes office in January. Perhaps it was a risk, but a risk worth taking,” Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal. Canadian officials say lumping Canada in with Mexico is unfair but say they are ready to make new investments in border security. When Trump imposed higher tariffs during his first term in office, other countries responded with retaliatory tariffs of their own. Canada, for instance, announced billions of new duties in 2018 against the U.S. in a response to new taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum. In one of his first major interviews with Western media following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election earlier this month, President Zelensky appeared willing to make concessions to end the conflict nearly three years after the Russian invasion. Although he did not make any firm commitments, Zelensky suggested that the “hot” stage of the conflict between his country and Russia could be brought to an end if the American-led NATO alliance committed to protecting the part of the country currently under Kyiv’s control under a military “umbrella.” “If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, we need to take under the NATO umbrella the territory of Ukraine that we have under our control,” he told Sky News. “We need to do it fast. And then on the [occupied] territory of Ukraine, Ukraine can get them back in a diplomatic way.” Zelesnsky, who continued in the interview to advocate Ukraine joining the NATO alliance, admitted that under such a ceasefire framework, it would not be possible for Ukraine to accept membership as it would mean officially ceding the territory under Russian control to Moscow, which is illegal under Ukraine’s constitution. Suchir Balaji, 26, was found dead inside his Buchanan Street apartment on Nov. 26, San Francisco police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said. Police had been called to the Lower Haight residence at about 1 p.m. that day, after receiving a call asking officers to check on his well-being, a police spokesperson said. The medical examiner’s office has not released his cause of death, but police officials this week said there is “currently, no evidence of foul play.” Information he held was expected to play a key part in lawsuits against the San Francisco-based company. Balaji’s death comes three months after he publicly accused OpenAI of violating U.S. copyright law while developing ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence program that has become a moneymaking sensation used by hundreds of millions of people across the world. Its public release in late 2022 spurred a torrent of lawsuits against OpenAI from authors, computer programmers and journalists, who say the company illegally stole their copyrighted material to train its program and elevate its value past $150 billion. The Mercury News and seven sister news outlets are among several newspapers, including the New York Times, to sue OpenAI in the past year. In an interview with the New York Times published Oct. 23, Balaji argued OpenAI was harming businesses and entrepreneurs whose data were used to train ChatGPT. “If you believe what I believe, you have to just leave the company,” he told the outlet, adding that “this is not a sustainable model for the internet ecosystem as a whole.” Balaji grew up in Cupertino before attending UC Berkeley to study computer science. It was then he became a believer in the potential benefits that artificial intelligence could offer society, including its ability to cure diseases and stop aging, the Times reported. “I thought we could invent some kind of scientist that could help solve them,” he told the newspaper. But his outlook began to sour in 2022, two years after joining OpenAI as a researcher. He grew particularly concerned about his assignment of gathering data from the internet for the company’s GPT-4 program, which analyzed text from nearly the entire internet to train its artificial intelligence program, the news outlet reported. The practice, he told the Times, ran afoul of the country’s “fair use” laws governing how people can use previously published work. In late October, he posted an analysis on his personal website arguing that point. No known factors “seem to weigh in favor of ChatGPT being a fair use of its training data,” Balaji wrote. “That being said, none of the arguments here are fundamentally specific to ChatGPT either, and similar arguments could be made for many generative AI products in a wide variety of domains.” Reached by this news agency, Balaji’s mother requested privacy while grieving the death of her son. In a Nov. 18 letter filed in federal court, attorneys for The New York Times named Balaji as someone who had “unique and relevant documents” that would support their case against OpenAI. He was among at least 12 people — many of them past or present OpenAI employees — the newspaper had named in court filings as having material helpful to their case, ahead of depositions. Generative artificial intelligence programs work by analyzing an immense amount of data from the internet and using it to answer prompts submitted by users, or to create text, images or videos. When OpenAI released its ChatGPT program in late 2022, it turbocharged an industry of companies seeking to write essays, make art and create computer code. Many of the most valuable companies in the world now work in the field of artificial intelligence, or manufacture the computer chips needed to run those programs. It started so quickly and so promisingly. President-elect Donald Trump began announcing his team Nov. 7 by naming America’s first female White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles. After a three-day break, Mr. Trump renewed staffing his administration the following Sunday by proposing an ambassador to the United Nations and a border czar. The next day he announced his pick for Environmental Protection Agency administrator. That Tuesday Mr. Trump revealed his choices for national security adviser, Central Intelligence Agency director, homeland security secretary, ambassador to Israel and co-chairmen of a new commission called the Department of Government Efficiency. Though his nomination that day of Fox News host Pete Hegseth for defense secretary raised questions, all these other picks were defensible. Overall, the president-elect was coming across as purposeful, focused and energetic. Then came Wednesday. On Nov. 13, the future president picked for his attorney general Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz. It was a catastrophically bad selection that eventually led to Gaetz withdrawing from consideration. The nomination couldn’t be defended by referring to Mr. Gaetz’s record as an attorney. He has barely practiced law. He has no prosecutorial experience except as a prosecution’s target. And his law license was briefly suspended in 2021 because he stopped paying his bar-association dues. Nor could the pick be justified because of his outstanding legislative record. He doesn’t have one. To the degree he’s known for doing anything on the House floor, it’s reportedly for sharing the details of his latest female conquests. Then, of course, there’s his turn on former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Mr. Gaetz’s behavior then made appeals to party unity to confirm him now unpersuasive. He led seven other House GOP renegades to ally with 208 Democrats to remove Mr. McCarthy over the objections of 210 fellow Republicans. There’s also the House Ethics Committee investigation into Mr. Gaetz for allegations that he used illicit drugs, paid to have sex with a minor and accepted improper gifts. Mr. Gaetz denies all these accusations. But his abrupt resignation from the House upon his nomination halted the committee’s process, and it’s unclear if it will release the report. Rather than for any particular skill or competency, Mr. Gaetz was selected because he promised he would smite Mr. Trump’s enemies within the Justice Department and hound his opponents outside it. Vengeance is a powerful motive but not a sound foundation for public confidence in the nation’s chief law-enforcement officer. It’s likely that the only way Mr. Gaetz could have been approved was if Mr. Trump expended enormous political capital to browbeat Senate Republicans into backing him. But no president has infinite sway, no matter how remarkable his electoral victory. Second-term chief executives tend to have even less. The confirmation proceedings for Mr. Trump’s director of national intelligence nominee, Tulsi Gabbard, and Mr. Hegseth could also be messy and full of bad press. His in particular could entail unpleasant surprises, given that the Trump transition team was reportedly blindsided after his nomination by the news that he had reached a settlement with a woman who accused him of sexual assault in 2017. Mr. Hegseth denies any wrongdoing. The former president made one other mistake with his nominations. By revealing his early choices through posts on Truth Social, Mr. Trump missed opportunities to deliver powerful messages to the American people about what he intends to do and why.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Honey, they shrunk the catalogs. While retailers hope to go big this holiday season , customers may notice that the printed gift guides arriving in their mailboxes are smaller. Many of the millions of catalogs getting sent to U.S. homes were indeed scaled down to save on postage and paper, resulting in pint-sized editions. Lands’ End, Duluth Trading Company and Hammacher Schlemmer are among gift purveyors using smaller editions. Some retailers are saving even more money with postcards. Lisa Ayoob, a tech-savvy, online shopper in Portland, Maine, was surprised by the size of a recent catalog she received from outdoor apparel company Carbon2Cobalt. “It almost felt like it was a pamphlet compared to a catalog,” she said. Catalogs have undergone a steady recalibration over the years in response to technological changes and consumer behavior. The thick, heavy Sears and J.C. Penney catalogs that brought store displays to American living rooms slimmed down and gave way to targeted mailings once websites could do the same thing. Recent postal rate increases accelerated the latest shift to compact formats. The number of catalogs mailed each year dropped about 40% between 2006 to 2018, when an estimated 11.5 billion were mailed to homes, according to the trade group formerly known as the American Catalog Mailers Association. In a sign of the times, the group based in Washington rebranded itself in May as the American Commerce Marketing Association, reflecting a broadened focus. But don’t expect catalogs to go the way of dinosaurs yet. Defying predictions of doom, they have managed to remain relevant in the e-commerce era. Retail companies found that could treat catalogs with fewer pages as a marketing tool and include QR and promo codes to entice customers to browse online and complete a purchase. Despite no longer carrying an extended inventory of goods, catalogs are costly to produce and ship. But they hold their own in value because of growing digital advertising costs, helping retailers cut through the noise for consumers barraged by multi-format advertisements, industry officials say. In an unlikely twist, notable e-commerce companies like Amazon and home goods supplier Wayfair started distributing catalogs in recent years. Amazon began mailing a toy catalog in 2018. That was the same year Sears, which produced an annual Christmas Wish Book Wish starting in 1933, filed for bankruptc y. Fans of printed information may rejoice to hear that apparel retailer J.Crew relaunched its glossy catalog this year. Research shows that the hands-on experience of thumbing through a catalog leaves a greater impression on consumers, said Jonathan Zhang, a professor of marketing at Colorado State University. “The reason why these paper formats are so effective is that our human brains haven’t evolved as fast as technology and computers over the past 10 to 20 years. We retain more information when we read something on paper. That’s why paper books remain relevant,” Zhang said. “The psychology shows that three-dimensional, tactile experiences are more memorable.” Pint-sized presentations still can work, though, because the purpose of catalogs these days is simply to get customers’ attention, Zhang said. Conserving paper also works better with younger consumers who are worried about the holiday shopping season’s impact on the planet, he said. Postal increases are hastening changes. The latest round of postage hikes in July included the category with the 8.5-by-11-inch size that used to be ubiquitous for the catalog industry. Many retailers responded by reducing the size of catalogs, putting them in a lower-cost letter category, said Paul Miller, executive vice president and managing director of the American Commerce Marketing Association. One size, called a “slim jim,” measures 10.5 by 5.5 inches. But there other sizes. Some retailers have further reduced costs by mailing large postcards to consumers. Lands’ End, for one, is testing new compact formats to supplement its traditional catalogs. This year, that included folded glossy brochures and postcards, along with other formats, Chief Transformation Officer Angie Rieger said. Maine resident Ayoob said she understands why retailers still use catalogs even though she no longer is a fan of the format. These days, she prefers to browse for products on the internet, not by flipping through paper pages. “Everybody wants eyeballs. There’s so much out there — so many websites, so many brands,” said Ayoob, who spent 35 years working in department stores and in the wholesale industry. Targeting customers at home is not a new concept. L.L. Bean was a pioneer of the mail-order catalog after its founder promoted his famous “Maine Hunting Shoe” to hunting license holders from out-of-state in 1912. The outdoor clothing and equipment company based in Freeport, Maine, is sticking to mailing out regular-sized catalogs for now. “By showcasing our icons, the catalog became an icon itself,” L.L. Bean spokesperson Amanda Hannah said. “Even as we invest more in our digital and brand marketing channels, the catalog retains a strong association with our brand, and is therefore an important part of our omni-channel strategy, especially for our loyal customers.”
