It is also suitable for training missions , from ab initio to Instrument Flight Rules IFR, providing students with an ideal platform to hone their skills and prepare them for the transition to advanced military aircraft. The helicopter is also suitable for overflights of residential areas, with the further great advantage of not being dependent on airport structures for landings and take-offs. The AW109 was developed in the late 1960s by the Italian helicopter manufacturer Agusta, founded by Count Giovanni Agusta in Samarate, Northern Italy. AgustaWestland was established in 2006, by merging Agusta and UK's Westland. In April 2016, Finmeccanica acquired AgustaWestland and merged it into a single entity, Leonardo. The AW109 is the first all-Italian helicopter to be mass-produced. Initially designed as a single-engine helicopter, it was reoriented to a twin-engine rotorcraft in 1969. The first prototype made its maiden flight in 1971. The AW109 received certification from the FAA in 1975, allowing service entry in 1976. Military models feature strengthened engines, expanded fuselages, and equipment fittings. In September 2023, the Argentinian Minister of Defense, Jorge Taiana, signed a Letter of Intent LOI to purchase eight AW109S during his visit to the Leonardo Helicopters plant in Vergiate, Northern Italy. Later, in November 2024, the Argentinian Navy, Armada, signed a contract to purchase a package in Italy for 63 million euros, including four Leonardo AW109SP helicopters, a training simulator, equipment, and spare parts. The Philippine Air Force acquired 8 AW-109AH units, delivered in 2015 and operated by the 18th Attack Squadron. After hitting a record high of 26,277 points on September 27, the broad market benchmark NSE Nifty had tumbled 11.5 per cent to a little over 23,000 points by November 21. This was the longest secular losing streak for the top 50-shares’ market gauge since June 2022. A lot of factors appeared to be pulling down Dalal Street momentum, including the surprisingly weak second quarter results for listed Indian firms, foreign investors recalibrating portfolios towards China as it sought to stimulate its way through a rough patch and anticipated adverse implications for world trade after Donald Trump won his way back to the White House. November 21 also marked the day the markets got to know about an U.S. Court indictment of some Adani Green Energy officials after a Department of Justice probe into allegations that included securities fraud, wire fraud as well as bribery, with civil charges separately initiated by the U.S. market regulator. In the eleven trading sessions since then, or between November 22 and December 6, the tide has shifted – with the Nifty gaining in nine of the 11 sessions. Market experts say the growth slump had already been priced in over the previous weeks’ losing streak, and the RBI’s policy was hardly a surprise, with October’s inflation spiking to 6.2 per cent, and November unlikely to report a dramatic cooling. That perhaps explains the mere 0.1 per cent, or 30 points, drop in the Nifty last Friday after the RBI policy was unveiled. The Nifty is up 13.5 per cent so far in 2024, and as the year draws to a close, what should investors expect in its last few weeks of trading? In a report titled ‘Nifty: At The Crossroads’, Axis Securities dug into the past for a clue. In the past 25 years, the Nifty went up 80% of the time between Nov. 25 and Dec. 31, with average and median returns of 4.1 per cent and 2.2 per cent, respectively. The probability of an uptick shoots up to 100 per cent in the years of U.S. Presidential polls, with mean and median returns of 5.8 per cent and 6.8 per cent, respectively. Bajaj Broking researchers also termed December one of the best months for the Indian market with the Nifty rising in 17 of the last 24 years. Based on historical patterns and current market analysis, the firm expects the markets will do well this month, and the Nifty could target levels between 24,800 and 25,200. As of December 6, the index is up 3.2 per cent starting from the Nov. 25 trading session, and 2.2 per cent in this month so far. Of course, past performance is no assurance but if the last 24-25 years’ trend holds, there may well be some upside left for the Nifty in 2024. While investors would hope for a Christmas bonus, Bajaj Broking has warned volatility could be higher this month thanks to domestic and global cues, like the U.S. Federal Reserve’s next rate move expected a week before the festival. So keep calm but watchful as you prepare to ring out the old. The Tribune filed a FOIA for those records on Oct. 25, after news broke that the mayor’s longtime friend and former press secretary for his mayoral campaign and for the Chicago Teachers Union was being fired. But Oct. 19 texts that the Tribune also obtained via FOIA show the mayor making an apparent reference to Reese while messaging CTU President Stacy Davis Gates just four days before Reese was given notice of his termination. “Ronnie!” he wrote. “Call me. Message from the Elders.” Davis Gates responded to the apparent reference to Reese, who previously worked with her and Johnson at the teachers union, with only an exclamation reaction, according to a copy of the text exchange. She said this week that she did not engage further nor know about the accusations surrounding Reese until the Tribune reported on them. Johnson on Thursday addressed his October texts by saying, “I have conversations and text messages with a variety of people, and I’ve communicated to Stacy on a number of occasions of where there are opportunities for us to continue to grow our city through the lens of public education.” Asked why he couldn’t elaborate on what he wanted to discuss with Davis-Gates concerning Reese, the mayor merely said, “I’m actually saying more than more. ... Become a Member Corky Lee was affectionately known as Asian America’s “unofficial photographer laureate.” Put together by his family and friends after his untimely death from COVID-19, Corky Lee’s Asian America: Fifty Years of Photographic Justice (2024) is, in essence, a retrospective, presenting his works in roughly chronological order, interspersed with essays from loved ones, colleagues, and even the subjects of his images. Lee began photographing in the 1970s while working as a young community activist in New York City’s Chinatown. Unsurprisingly, the book is, in one dimension, an ode to the neighborhood, not as a tourist destination but as a lived-in community and hotbed of social justice movements. From the start, Lee’s motives were social. He took photos of everything and everyone, from everyday people dancing, lifting weights, or simply standing outside their favorite restaurants, to Asian American icons like Yuri Kochiyama and Yo-Yo Ma. But what he loved photographing more than anything was social justice in action. He captured, among other moments, incidents of police brutality, the pain of the South Asian community post-9/11, and the rampant spread of hate crimes against Asians during COVID-19. The result in Corky Lee’s Asian America is a stunning glimpse into the fight for racial justice over the last half-century — one many Americans haven’t seen. Mainstream news sources did not capture Chinatown landlord-tenant disputes or protests for a neighborhood health center, as Lee did. It did not focus on Asian American opposition to the Vietnam War, as Lee did in a particularly arresting photo of activist Grace Lee Boggs holding a megaphone at a rally in front of the Washington Monument. His work was not merely photojournalism but also art in its own right. His favorite of his own works was a revision of Andrew Russell’s historic 1869 photograph of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad , which leaves out the Chinese laborers who built most of the western railways. In his 2014 revision, Lee gathered 250 Asian Americans of all ages, including descendants of the original railroad workers, at Promontory Point in Utah; they stand together before two trains facing each other, their expressions ranging from morose to neutral to joyous as the sparse Great Basin landscape stretches on behind them. Daily Weekly Opportunities Readers might understandably criticize the book for focusing on the Chinese American story within the greater Asian American narrative, especially while boasting such a sweeping title . But though Lee started off photographing what he knew — he once told his loved ones that Chinatown was “part of [his] soul” — he worked to broaden his focus. He knew, as his fellow social activists did, that the fates of different Asian American groups are tied together. He photographed Japanese Americans celebrating their Obon Buddhist festival, the Filipino American community’s Flores de Mayo festival, Sikh Americans holding a candlelight vigil in New York after 9/11, and many other instances of a diverse Asian America. Some might also wonder if the book is a little overly didactic. The editors provide extensive sociohistorical context, which at times comes across as dry, such as discussion about the United States census in the introduction to Lee’s photographs from the 1980s and 1990s. Yet that educational bent resonates with Lee’s goals: He was, as his friend, professor Mae Ngai, writes, an “activist-photographer.” People of Asian descent have lived in this country for almost as long as it’s existed, and yet the primary Asian American condition is still invisibility — Corky Lee’s Asian America renders them visible .
